Lynda Barnes of Double Oak, Texas, won her second USBC
Queens title Wednesday at Skore Lanes in Taylor, Michigan
TAYLOR, Mich—Her husband may be one of the best
bowlers in the world, but Lynda
Barnes of Double Oak, Texas,
proved she’s not so bad herself
Wednesday as she won the
2008 United States Bowling
Congress Queens.
Barnes, whose husband is
PBA Player of the Year Chris
Barnes, delivered three perfect
strikes in the final frame en
route to defeating Amy Stolz of
Castle Rock, Colo., 215-195 at
Skore Lanes to win the biggest
and most prestigious title in
women’s bowling.
“Stepping up in the 10th
frame in that situation is every
athlete’s dream,” said Barnes,
who also won the Queens in
1998. “When I looked up there
and knew I needed all three
strikes just to give me a chance,
I knew I’d already done it a
thousand times in my head and
I just needed to get out of my
own way.”
Barnes entered the championship round as the top seed
and survived seven consecutive
matches without a loss to claim
the title. She rebounded from a
2-4-10 split in the sixth frame
and struck on five of her next
six shots to win the title.
“This is a tough tournament,
and I’ve been very fortunate
because it takes the luck of the
draw and bowling the right people at the right time,” Barnes
said. “I feel lucky to even have
made it to this position.”
While Barnes was competing in the championship match,
her husband was calling the
action for the live telecast on
ESPN2, creating a unique situation for Barnes.
“I could hear him throughout the show, and I could hear
some of his comments,” said
Barnes, the mother of 5-yearold twin boys, Ryan and Troy.
“It was actually reassuring for
me because I could hear him
and it let me know I was doing
the right things. Plus, I had the
picture of my kids on the table,
so between the two it really
kept me focused.”

Instruction to Help Raise Your Scores
How Today’s Dried Out Lane Conditions
Differ From Those Of The Past Dry Lane
Scoring Strategies Modernized
The Reverse (Or Inverted Crown) Oil Pattern
Big Savings with Marathon Entries
Most bowlers are familiar with the common “Crown” or “Top
Hat” oil pattern (oily middle, drier near the channels) encountered
in virtually all of today’s bowling centers. It is normally referred to
as a “House” condition and is primarily designed to support higher
scoring by helping keep missed hook shots out of the channel.
Well, a “Reverse” or “Inverted” lane condition is exactly what
its name implies, the exact opposite of the above. In other words, a
dried out middle, with either an oily or dry outside, depending on
previous lane play or possibly, a different than the usual “House”
oil pattern having been applied in the first place. Whatever the
reason, such “Sahara Desert” type conditions do occur…and often
wreak havoc with scores.
But fear not. There are answers, which we’ll discuss here.
But First, An Explanation
Many of today’s bowlers, interested in improving beyond
social bowler status, seek a more challenging environment. They
enter the currently available leagues and tournaments featuring
various “Sport” conditions, as well as several PBA and USBC
National Tournament conditions in current use. If you’re one
of those, you know who you are and you know beforehand that
encountering those conditions will initially result in lower scores.
Why? Because such conditions, in addition to usually featuring
more oil overall, are often oily all the way out to the channels.
That sometimes results in gutter balls or at least light hits, with
buckets often left standing.
The reason for going into this is important. Simply put, it’s because as stated above, a lane will dry out differently depending not
only on ball traffic, but also on how it was oiled to begin with. Keep
in mind that modern lane machines, with their on board computers,
are capable of applying any of 7 or more oil patterns.
1. The Usual House Shot Breakdown
So let’s visualize how such lanes have to be played when
they have broken down (dried out) due to lane play in an original
house shot pattern.
First, since the outside area of the lane (usually from the 8 or
9 board outward) has less oil to begin with, most ball traffic will
tend to gradually migrate from the second arrow (10 board) inward.
So as play progresses, that drying out process simply continues,
until the dry area has increased and moved closer and closer to
the center of the lane.
In a normal three game league, you’ll notice that both foot and
target (mark) adjustments (toward the inside) become necessary,
usually starting in the early part of game two. So by the end of
league play, your adjustments will have gone several boards.
In tournaments, however, where 8 or more games are often
played, the lane breakdown area grows and moves so far toward
the center, that any hope of good scoring often involves standing
deep inside…and…shooting toward a target somewhere between
the 15 and 20 boards (third and fourth arrows). Diagram 1 shows
a common line used by successful bowlers after such adjustments
have been made. See Illustration 1.
At this point it’s important to mention that additional changes
may become necessary. Such things as switching to longer running balls, increasing ball speed, weaker hand releases etc. can
make a big difference.
Left handed bowlers will obviously still have some oil on
their side of the lane, therefore demanding less adjustments. But
be careful you southpaws…I’ve seen teams of half or more left
handers leaving too many splits to even have a chance to win, by
adjusting too little and too late. So the more of you on the lane,
the more adjusting will be necessary.
2. The Flooded Lane Breakdown
As mentioned above, those gutter to gutter oil patterns,
such as certain Sport, USBC Nationals and some PBA patterns,
are more difficult to score on overall. Beyond that, however,
you cannot count on such lanes to break down as gradually and
consistently as they do in a house shot. Worse yet, depending on
which part of the lane sees the most ball traffic, you may not even
be certain that the lanes will break down from the outside toward
the center.
Put together, all those variations make it even tougher than
many bowlers realize.
I’m assuming that you wouldn’t be reading this unless you’re
interested in improving to the point where no lane condition can
fool you. So I’m also assuming that beyond improving your overall
execution and shot techniques, you realize that whichever lane
condition you face when you first start to bowl, it will also break
down differently depending on which of the 7 oil patterns was laid
down in the first place that day.
Why do I bring this up? Because adjusting, sometimes just
your feet, sometimes both feet and target (mark) is the first way
to keep up with gradually drying lanes. It is important to keep in
mind that once the lanes begin to break down, they will never
stop breaking down! This means that with every strike shot you
throw…in every frame…the condition will have changed. Maybe
not much, but usually enough to cause high hits, resulting in either
pocket splits or those dreaded “through the nose”, unmakeable
splits…unless you adjust.
So…it is absolutely critical that you plan every next frame
ahead of time, then pay close attention to what your ball is doing
as a result of that plan. It’s the only way to be sure what to do
with that next shot.
Now…if this process seems to require too much concentration,
relax. Remember that this is fun! You’ll get a lot of satisfaction
from seeing your adjustments work out. Keep in mind that every
shot you ever throw is an experiment anyway; if it was a bad shot,
Illustration 1
Illustration 2
think of it as an experiment to improve. If it was a good shot, it’s
an experiment to see if your next one can be as good.
Because, as stated above, the lanes break down differently in
the “heavy oil” patterns we’re talking about, your next step is to
choose from the possible lines (some shown in illustration 2).
See Illustration 2.
Notice that in this situation there is still a bit of oil on the outside
lane areas, with the middle portion dried out. So here, the right
handers’ line is more a matter of choice, somewhat as shown:
Strategy A - The Deep Inside “Swing” Shot. Stand left and
select a target (mark) somewhere at or inside the 3rd arrow. This
allows the shot angle to be great enough to allow room for the
hook without the ball going too high at the pocket. Then fine tune
your adjustments as needed for the flush pocket hit.
Strategy B - The Inside “Rocket to the pocket” shot. Still
standing inside, but not quite as deep as in A, increase your ball
speed to cut down some on gross hook. This shot should assist
with accuracy, as well as helping avoid too many split possibilities.
Here it becomes important to avoid muscling the shot. Instead,
gain desired ball speed by utilizing an “over the bar” pushaway,
to allow a free armswing to do the job.
Strategy C – The Outside “Down and In” shot. This shot (which
many right handed bowlers fear due to that outside oil) utilizes a
3, 4 or 5 board shot. This keeps the ball from hooking until it gets
farther down lane into the break point area, thus helping avoid
coming into the pocket behind the head pin. This shot requires
fearlessness and accuracy, but is worth it once developed.
A Note to left handers
In this type of oil pattern, your side will usually dry out less,
so your shot won’t change as much as the right side. However,
pay close attention to the left-center of the lane. If that area begins to make your ball over-hook, avoid the strategy of adjusting
right to try a more inside shot. That’s because as your ball travels
outward down lane, all that outside oil won’t let the ball come
back to the pocket.
In such a case, therefore, your best bet is to actually move
your entire line outward rather than inward, thus creating more of
a “down and in” shot, with which you’re usually more comfortable anyway.
A Possible Danger To High Revvers
You must watch out for dry heads developing in this type of
condition. So your critical strategy is to be sure to match your ball
speed to your revs. High revving balls are not…repeat, not…the
answer to everything. Any over-revving ball will “run away” from
you and never recover.
Any attempt to put lift on the ball is also doomed to failure.
Why? Because when that lofted, high revving missile bangs down
onto the lane surface, its side rotation will usually make it jump
just enough sideways to destroy the accuracy of your shot and any
hope of good scoring.
LAS VEGAS—The 2008 Mini-Eliminator Summer Classic at
Texas Station in Las Vegas will be held June 30 through July 6.
For the first time in the Mini’s 18 year history “marathon entries”
will be available. Bowlers can now save over $600 by purchasing
one of two marathon entry packages.
The “Mini” Marathon entry package includes a Columbia 300
performance ball ($225 value) your original entry ($250 value)
and two re-entries ($320 value). Total value for the Mini Marathon
entry is $795 but your cost is only $495…a $300 savings!
The “Super” Marathon entry package includes TWO COLUMBIA 300 BALLS ($450 value), a high-end triple roller bag
($189.95), your original entry ($250 value), two re-entries ($320
value), and a Columbia 300 Shootout entry ($200 value.) Total
value: $1,410 but your cost is only $745… a savings of $665!
Making the super marathon package even more attractive is all
of your re-entries for the event, after you use up your original 3
marathon entries, are only $99.
The Marathon entries will NOT affect the amazing 1 in 8 cut
to the finals each squad (minimum $500). All marathon entries
count as a full entry when determining each squad’s cut score. At
the TAT their marathon entries count only as a partial entry thus
making their cuts to the finals as high as 1 in 20+ bowlers! Getting
a good deal shouldn’t hurt bowlers!
Marathon entries can be purchased at any time including onsite at Texas Station but are not refundable once you bowl a squad
or pick up your new equipment. Marathon entry packages cannot
be combined with any other special promotions or coupons the
Mini-Eliminator is offering. Only one marathon entry package per
person is permitted. The balls offered in the marathon packages
replace the Shootout and 4th entry ball bonuses.
The Mini-Eliminator Summer Classic is a three game scratch
qualifying tournament with a “beat-half-the-field” in your division finals. All prizes are guaranteed including $20,000-1st. The

IMPORTANT DATE CHANGE FOR SENIOR
THANKSGIVING CLASSICS
LAS VEGAS—If you attended High Roller’s Senior April
Classics recently, you might have been asked for your opinion
about the date change for the upcoming Thanksgiving Classics.
Many who weren’t there have also sent us their feelings about
moving the 15 year old event to the 1st week of December. And
although there were players who favored the date change, a huge
majority were against it, basically citing the same reasons.
Sam’s Town agrees! So after meeting with management this
past week, we are happy to report that we will stage the 2008
November Senior Classics on the same days that we have since
1993! So with Thanksgiving on November 27, mark your calendar
for Sunday to Sunday, November 23 to 30!
We apologize for making this change as some might have
already made plans but we know that this is better for the greater
majority of players who would like to attend. And with the event
7 months away, we hope it is not an inconvenience for anyone.
More news - we will also be back on our normal Easter dates
in 2009, Sunday to Easter Sunday, April 5 - 12. Since the USBC

Troy Sucatre Wins First ABT
Championship at Cal Bowl
LAKEWOOD—Troy Sucatre won his first Amateur Bowlers Tour (ABT) championship at Cal
Bowl on Saturday, May 3, 2008 during our one-day 4-game Beat-the-Board tournament. Troy
bowled in our 6PM squad and shot games of 288, 243, 276 and 208 with handicap for a series total
of 1015 and the $820 1st place prize plus $800 from the Progressive Pot. Ed Abarca of Imperial
Beach came in second shooting a 1012 handicap series for $410. Randi Diato from Escondido came
in third shooting a 1009 handicap series and received $205.
Our newest champion, Troy Sucatre has been bowling for about 35 years. Troy has been the ABT
League secretary for many years. Troy sports a high game of 279 and 690 series. Troy was using
a Storm Fired-Up drilled by Patsy at the Pro Shop inside Tustin Lanes. Troy wanted to thank Arnie
Schroeder and Stan Takeuchi for helping him with his game. He also wanted to thank Arnie Schroeder
and Paul Varela for their encouragement and support during the tournament. Troy wanted to thank
ABT for the free entry from the ABT League 50/50 draw. This was Troy’s first ABT championship
and he wanted to dedicate it to his wife, Nora, who passed away in December, but continues to be
his inspiration. Troy also stated that he can now join his daughter when tournament champions are
announced at tournaments. Troy also wanted to thank Cal Bowl for hosting the tournament and
ABT Orange County staff and directors for running an outstanding tournament.
We held our monthly SBT this weekend. There were 17 entries, with Greg Jackson shooting a
fine 963 series and will receive a check for $500. Ed Abarca came in second shooting a 920 series

The Mystery Game Pot game and score were drawn after our final squad. Game #2 was the
game drawn. The first chance score of 104 (possibly good for $300) was drawn. Our second chance
score (possibly good for $150) was 143. The third chance score (possibly good for $75) was 298.
There were no winners. The Mystery Pot is available to all members (Classic and Masters) and
only costs $5.

by Nice and Sweet
STUDIO CITY — We are closing up shop for the Winter ‘07-08
season and we are encouraging everyone to acknowledge it by
showing up for their league photos. As league bowlers it is nice to
remember how and with whom you spent the past 30 weeks bowling with. Our very own “Robert Capa” (llo it up); John Boyle, is the
in house professional snapping all the shots. Reclaim your favorite
sport with a terrific snapshot.
PINZ ADULTS
You are all picture perfect in our eyes. Usually the strikes are not

by Rob Hartley - Coach
NORWALK—Maria Luisa
Cuellar, is 40 years old and was
born with some challenges. She
is on our special needs bowling
league at Keystone Lanes. During her life she has been around
a family of bowlers and especially her Grandfather, Danny
Canas. Her Grandfather is still
one of our senior bowlers and
enjoys the sport as much as he
did when he was young.
So Maria, wasn’t very happy when at least eight out of
ten balls she threw ending up in
the channel. The result was discouragement and it didn’t take
long before she was thinking
about quitting. So her parents
decided to get some lessons for
Maria and what a difference it
has made.
The last couple of weeks
have proven this by her scores
of 60’s, 70’s and even a couple
of 90’s! In addition Maria has
converted a few splits and even
had a turkey! Maria is an example of what a person can do
even when they may have a few
challenges. Maria has definitely
risen to the challenge!

Maria Luisa Cuellar
We need to take a look at
our Special Need Athletes and
thank them for their enthusiasm, love of the sport and attitudes of never giving up. The
next time you have a tough day
bowling think about how great
it is to have those around who
inspire and motivate to love this
sport of bowling!
Every Wednesday, Maria
walks in with a smile and delightful stride to practice along
with her coach! Her parents sit
patiently and smile just to see
what a difference Maria has
made in her score, her ability
to learn basic spot bowling, and
to learn to concept that winners
never quit!
Maria truly is one of those
bowlers that inspire all to do
our best, but knowing that
even with a challenge or two,
we can all become winners in
bowling!

BARNES
continued from page 1
After Barnes stepped up in
the final frame and delivered
three strikes, Stolz had an opportunity to tie the match if
she could match with a threebagger of her own. But on her
first shot, she left the 2-5 spare
to finish second.
“I just wanted to step up and
throw a good shot,” Stolz said.
“Usually I’m great under pressure and I didn’t throw a bad
shot, it just didn’t quite make it
to the pocket. It felt really good
off my hand, but it just hung out
there a bit.”
On the way to the title
match, Stolz took out Australian Carol Gianotti, 217-179,
and then defeated second seed
Liz Johnson of Cheektowaga,
N.Y., 234-232, in the semifinal.
Gianotti defeated Joy Esterson
of Annapolis, Md., 237-222 in
the opening match.
Barnes took home $30,000
for first place in addition to
the Queens tiara, pendant and
crystal trophy. Stolz earned
$18,000 for second.
The USBC Queens, which
is presented by Eldorado, Silver Legacy and Circus Circus,
featured a field of 337 of the
top female bowlers in the world
competing for a total prize fund
of $200,000.

National Deaf Bowling News
Deaf Team USA Tryouts at
Colorado Springs June 13-15
by Connie Marchione
COLORADO SPRINGS—Ed Abakumoff, the Bowling Ad
Hoc Chairman for United States Deaf Sports Federation issued a
flyer officially announcing the site and dates of bowling tryouts
for the Deaf Team USA. The site is Harmony Bowl in Colorado
Springs and dates are Friday, Saturday and Sunday June 13, 14 and
15, 2008. All games are to start at 9 AM for all day each day.
Abakumoff said there are several hotels and motels within 5
miles of Harmony Bowl and make your own reservations, You
must be deaf or have hearing impairment loss of at least 55dB
in both ears. (You will not use your hearing aids during this
tournament.) You must be U.S. citizen and have a current valid
passport or be able to get one fast (before March 2009) if you
make the team.
Entrants must be USBC member and men should have 185 or
better and women 170 or better. Entrants also must be a member
of USA Deaf Sports Federation (USADSF). USADSF membership
($5.00) forms can be downloaded from usdeafsports.org.
The Tryout purpose is to field the best 6 men and 6 women
for the Team USA to represent US in the 2009 Deaflympics held
in Taipei, Taiwan from September 5 to 15, 2009. The Tryout
format (40 games) is similar to the bowling events held in the
Deaflympics.
The Tryout entry fee is $80.00 (money-order or cashier check)
to be mailed to Ed Abakumoff, 19494 Mt. Wasatch Dr. Riverside,
CA 92508 with a copy of your current USBC card. The deadline is
June 1 to set up the schedule but walk-ins will be considered.
This flyer can be downloaded by entering 2009 Deaflympic tryout flyer.doc or email to Abakumoff@aol.com and ask for one.
ROBERT ELLISON ROLLS 878 SERIES AT PARKWAY BOWL
SAN DIEGO—News was passed to me that Deaf Team USA
member Robert Ellison tossed games of 289-300-289 for a tremendous 878 series at Parkway Bowl in San Diego.. He had a 7
in first game and 10 pin in 3rd game after 10 strikes. Two pins
stopped him from a perfect 900.
I will get more information to tell more about it when I come
back from the USBC Convention in Kansas City. There I will
take part in the Hall of Fame Ceremony and watch the Clash of
Champions being televised by CBS Sports. The bowling battle
will be shown on your CBS channel on Saturday and Sunday
May 10 and 11. May 10 at 5 PM Eastern Time and May 11 at 4
PM Eastern Time (check you TV guide for time zone. I will also
attend the delegate meetings and watch them vote on the new
rules proposals.
