Federal Legislation Introduced to Eliminate Soring On April 11, 2013, Congressmen Ed Whitfield (R-KY) introduced the Prevent All Soring Tactics Act of 2013. The bill is intended to strengthen the Horse Protection Act (HPA) to prevent soring. The HPA was enacted in 1970 to prohibit the showing, exhibiting, transporting, or sale t auction of a horse that has been sored. To read the entire article, go here Soring Act in Congress. First American Paint Horse Association Therapeutic Riding Scholarship Winners Announced Through an innovative partnership between the American Paint Horse Foundation and the Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship International (PATH), scholarship assistance is provided to potential instructors of therapeutic riding. Selected from a competitive field, Cindy Salyer of Reno, Nevada, and Kathy Hiberd of Burleson, Texas, have been named the first-ever winners of these unique scholarships. Both women receive $800 scholarships toward completing PATH International certification. A horse owner for more than 35 years, Cindy is pursuing a degree in psychology/social work with extensive volunteer contributions to therapeutic riding.“I believe the benefits of equine-assisted activities and therapies are farreaching, and my goal is to strive for excellence in the field,” Cindy told the Foundation. “By attending the workshop and certification, I’ll be exposed to new ideas and situations that will expand my understanding of the work and provide opportunities for invaluable learning experiences on site.”Kathy, a dedicated staff member at Wings of Hope Equitherapy in Burleson, Texas, hopes to further her involvement with the center by becoming a PATH-certified instructor. 4 “Kathy has an enthusiasm for learning all she can about the horses, the riders and their challenges,” Wings of Hope Program Director Julie Rivard told the Foundation. Founded in 1969 to promote equine-assisted activities and therapies for individuals with special needs, PATH International’s more than 3,700 instructors have helped nearly 48,000 children and adults find strength and independence through involvement with horses. The average cost of registration for a PATH International certification workshop and test, which takes place over three days, is $800. The American Paint Horse Foundation seeks to assist individuals interested in certification through the application and acceptance of one-time, $800 scholarships. The APHF scholarship is open only to first-time applicants, and all applicants must be APHA members and PATH International members in good standing. Additionally, candidates must meet the criteria to become a Registered Instructor In Training and have completed at least 10 hours volunteering at a PATH International Premier Accredited Center. Learn more about how the American Paint Horse Foundation benefits the lives of American Paint Horses and their enthusiasts at aphfoundation.org. Apply for a PATH International scholarship through the Foundation by March 1, 2014. Contact Jan Anderson at janderson@apha.com or (817) 222-6414 for an application. AjPHA Youth World Show expands opportunities for recognition with Novice Youth age splits and more inclusive Introductory classes The American Paint Horse Association (APHA) broke new ground in the equine industry when they announced that their 2013 American Junior Paint Horse Association (AjPHA) World Championship Show will be held simultaneously with the Appaloosa Horse Club (ApHC) National and Youth World Championship Show this summer. The AjPHA Youth World Championship Show will take place June 29-July 6 at Will Rogers Memorial Center in Fort Worth. APHA, the world's second largest breed association, has continued to progress into new territory by adding age splits to the Novice Youth division at the show. Since the program's inception, Novice Youth classes have been offered in 18 & Under only. In 2008, Novice Youth classes were added to the class lineup at the World Show; but it was not until 2009 that winners were named as World Champions. The decision to split some Novice Youth classes into groups of 13 & Under / 14-18 was made after careful consideration and a result of the program's growth. Read more here: Split Classes. Splitting the popular Novice Youth classes by age has received broad support. Don't forget, the pre-entry deadline is May 15th! Convention 2014 – Save the Dates! Feb. 28-March 3 will be the dates of the APHA 2014 Convention. It will be held at the Westin DFW Airport Hotel in Irving, Texas. 2013 Rule Change Proposals will be voted on at this meeting. Sunday, March 2nd will be the induction of the second class of Hall of Fame nominees. Workshop 2013 Details This year's event will take place at the Hilton DFW Lakes, 1800 Highway 26 East, Grapevine, Texas 76051. Make your hotel reservations by calling 1/800/984-1344. Deadlines: Space Closes – May 20; Materials Due – May 24 All of the current Stallion Preview forms for the 2013 breeding season and the 2014 weanling futurity are now online at PNPHC.com 6 You snuck me beer as a toddler to calm me down, you bought be my first drink when I turned 21. You cooked up the best steak and oysters every PNPHC BBQ. You were a hell of a Marine and a wonderful character who was always there. Especially yelling at us to get to the arena or we would miss our class. Darn you and your mind jokes. The answer is up there in heaven for you. RIP Bob Belcher. Tabitha Whitford Well said Tabi. I think you speak for us all! 7 PNPHC mtg April 6th 2013. 700pm-740pm High Point: We need more sign ups for high points and more memberships. Promote your friends that trail ride and show at open PAC approved shows. Treasurers report: General Checking- $18,252.17 Breed Show: The show in Spanaway is coming up fast! We talked a little bit about last minute details. We still need helpers to sign up! Online, on the website is the job list which still needs scribes, ring stewards, paddock stewards and shavings. They do not need to be members, but some knowledge around horses for safety. For the show party on Saturday night after the classes end, we are having a potluck with raffle prizes. We are going to Put a discussion on Facebook about the items of dishes people are bringing. This will make it so people who do not know what to bring can look to see what everyone else is and get a better understanding of what is needed. If anyone does not have Facebook and want to see what is being brought, please send an email or call Tabitha Whitford. SHAVINGS HELPER! The shavings for the show are being dropped off Thursday. Tickets for shavings can be bought in the office and taken to get shavings, although we need a helper for watching shavings and excepting tickets. Promotion: Friday Night Lights is a barrel racing event held on Fridays that could be a great opportunity for our club to promote any riders on Paints and to get more memberships and sign ups for events high point. Two items to be discussed will be 1. Offering an APHA or duel registry class to earn points, Or 2. To get the whole event PAC approved so any Paint riders will not need to compete against other Paints necessarily. Game shows no longer need an APHA carded judge, so we are able to start promoting. BBQ: Need ideas for the club BBQ. Last year it was held at Silver Quarters in Bow, it was a blast but had very few members show up, which was the same for the years prior. Do we want a BBQ? Which was the question brought up at the meeting. Or maybe just a dinner somewhere. We have time to think about it, so any ideas are helpful and open for discussion. Next Mtg is at Snohomish Alfys on May 18th SHOW REPORT Overall I would say the show was a huge success. We will have a full accounting within the next couple weeks including a list of all volunteers, financial bottom line, award winners. Gave away 13 high points. Tracy Olney was the Club Member High Point, The awards were well received. Lots of lessons learned if we do it again next year. Weather was amazing beautiful Friday, then off and on showers throughout the rest of the show, but mostly off. The judges were well received. The Whitford family really pulled a lot of weight. Lori Nevin I think the show went pretty smoothly. We have a lot of suggestions in the survey box to go through for next year.
