Join today at nationalgallery.org.uk/membership or call 020 7747 2850 i t i s a p l e a s u r e to write again in support of London Art Week in July because I can tell readers (who can tell their friends and clients) that the National Gallery will remain at the heart of this event, its curators among those moving eagerly from gallery to gallery, from viewing to viewing, opening to opening. My successor as Director, Dr Gabriele Finaldi, well-known to so many of you, will be conspicuous in the future among them. And will receive you as I have done within the Gallery itself, because we want all collectors, not just of Old Master Paintings, but of Old Master drawings and Sculpture to support the National Gallery – as all (or almost all) dealers of Old Masters already do of course. We believe in the pleasure to be obtained from the close scrutiny of a work of art, of looking at it in different lights and seasons, again and again. And yes, we all believe in the pleasure of possession. Of course dealers generally get over this and sell what they love – although frequently retaining some secret emotional investment in it and planning one day to retrieve it for a while. And we curators and curator-directors (the category to which I belong) have to learn to welcome the rest of the world into our galleries. During this festive week in particular we will, I’m sure, all try to share as well as covet and compete. nicholas penny Didier Aaron Ltd Agnew’s Clifford House 15 Clifford Street London w 1 s 4 j y 6 St James’s Place London s w 1 a 1 n p telephone +44 (0)20 7534 9100 www.didieraaron.com michel dorigny (1617–1665) Study for a satyr Black chalk heightened with white 8¹⁄₁₆ × 10⁷⁄₁₆ in . 205 × 265 mm claude gillot (1673–1722) A scene from the Commedia dell’Arte Pen and black ink, brush and reddish-brown wash over traces of graphite 6⁵⁄₁₆ × 8⁷⁄₁₆ in . 160 × 215 mm telephone +44 (0)20 7491 9219 www.agnewsgallery.com exhibition Portraiture through the Ages henri-felix-emmanuel philippoteaux (1815–1884) Equestrian Portrait of Olivier Bro de Comères, the Hôtel des Invalides, Paris, beyond Signed and dated lower left F Philippoteaux 1847 Oil on canvas 51³⁄₁₆ × 38⅜ in . 130 × 97.5 cm Aktis Gallery 10 Park Place London s w 1 a 1 l p geer van velde (1898–1977) Composition, c.1947 Oil on canvas Monogrammed ‘GvV’ lower right 33½ × 39⅜ in . 85 × 100 cm Ariadne Galleries 6 Hill Street London w 1 j 5 n f telephone +44 (0)20 7629 6531 telephone +44 (0)20 3053 9559 www.aktis-gallery.co.uk www.ariadnegalleries.com exhibition Modern Art Three Egyptian Vases 1) Cylindrical Vase, Early Dynastic Period, first to second dynasty, c.3050-2686 bc, Alabaster, 45.5 cm high 2) Ritual Jar, Early Dynastic Period, first to second dynasty, c.30502686 bc, Crystalline limestone, 34.9 cm high 3) Alabastron, Late Period, twenty-sixth to thirtieth dynasty, c.664–343 bc, 44 cm high Charles Beddington Ltd exhibiting at The Fine Art Society 148 New Bond Street London w 1 s 2 j t pietro bellotti (1725–c.1800) The Molo Looking West with the Doge’s Palace c.1761 Oil on canvas 15 × 19⅛ in . 38 × 48.5 cm Katrin Bellinger at Colnaghi 15 Old Bond Street London w 1 s 4 a x telephone +44 (0)20 7629 5116 telephone +44 (0)20 7491 7408 www.charlesbeddington.com www.bellinger-art.com exhibition exhibition Venice: Paintings and Drawings of Three Centuries 17th to 19th Century French Drawings claude gillot (1673–1722) Four Actresses in Theatrical Costume Pen and black ink, sanguine wash with traces of pencil 5¾ × 7⅞ in . 146 × 200 mm C.G.
