BCAP Buzz The newsletter of the BCAP Fund P.O. Box 470065, Tulsa, OK 74147 | www.bcap fund.org | bcapfund@bcapfund.org | 918.637.8627 Welcome Words 2014 – Wow! What a great year for BCAP. This year we exceeded our goal for the number of patients served and assisted them with record dollar amounts! We could not have done this without the help and support of all our volunteers and supporters and we thank you. BCAP has been busy. Below are some highlights of events since our last issue. From our founder BCAP’s mission is to financially assist Breast Cancer Patients in the greater Tulsa area in their journey to recovery. Athletics Soccer game – BCAP was honored to be one of the recipients of the Tulsa Athletics first annual breast cancer awareness night in June at the Athletics Stadium. The Athletics, who play in the National Premier Soccer League hosted in-state rivals OKC FC and wore pink jerseys for this game. At the time, the Athletics were undefeated in the 2014 season. They also hosted the mothers of their players that fought and survived breast cancer on the bench during the game. Additionally, representatives from the Tulsa Fire Department, EMSA, AAA, and the Tulsa County Sherriff’s office were on hand with their pink vehicles in a show of support for breast cancer awareness. Attendance was at an all-time high for this game and the Ultras (the BEST fan club ever!) were in rare form with their chants, songs and lighting of fireworks after each score. BCAP founder, Angela Walters, was recognized on the field at half time along with other members of the board in attendance and all were presented with beautiful pink flowers. Pink jerseys, both signed and unsigned, were available for purchase during the entire season. All proceeds from the breast cancer awareness night and pink jersey sells go to charity. BCAP thanks the Athletics for an evening of fun and support! Bobbie Jo Sparks one-year cancer free celebration – Former BCAP patient, Bobbie Jo Sparks, wanted to celebrate her one-year cancer free date -- not with a dinner or even a party with her family but with everyone she knew. But she wanted to do even more…..she wanted to give back to BCAP for the help she received during her darkest times. So, she decided to throw a fundraiser for BCAP! Bobbie Jo secured her location, gathered door prizes, requested silent auction items, put together silent auction baskets, baked pies and recruited others to bake goodies for a live auction. And what a great event she put together. Several board members from BCAP attended Bobbie’s party and listened as Bobbie sang our praises. We were thrilled to be a part of such a special celebration and to help raise funds for BCAP and local breast cancer patients. Thanks, Bobbie! continued on page 2 BCAP Buzz Volume 14-2 November 2014 1 Welcome Words continued from pg. 1 Route 66 Ladies of Harley sold raffle tickets for Cheyenne’s Quilt – a fabulous quilt that is 124” x 124” and made up of t-shirts donated by Cheyenne, a Route 66 Harley Owners Group member that has cancer. The winning ticket was drawn December 6, and the winner donated the quilt back for another raffle. The new drawing will be in early January. Adriana Fout, Mary Kay Beauty Consultant, is having “Beauty with a Purpose” – she will donate $2 for every free makeover she does during the month of October. (Some of you may remember a donation from the Looney Bin for the last few years – this is the same lady). Thanks again to all our volunteers and supporters. You make all this possible! BCAP Buzz Volume 14-2 November 2014 4 Board Member Spotlight 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime. DiAnne Cunningham Board Member at Large, Event Committee Chair DiAnne has been an active BCAP volunteer for several years. After meeting Angela and hearing her inspiring story, she became an active volunteer in 2006. In 2011, DiAnne was recognized as one of Tulsa People’s Unsung Heroes for her volunteer and fundraising efforts. DiAnne has helped to organize many BCAP events, and joined the Board of Directors in 2013. DiAnne currently works at Tulsa Community College’s West Campus as the Director of Academic and Campus Services. She has experience with training, management and event planning. After earning 2 BS degrees in business, an MS degree in Applied Behavioral Studies in Education, DiAnne completed a doctorate in Human Resources and Adult Education from Oklahoma State University in 2009. DiAnne also teaches classes in hospitality management at TCC, where she earned an AS degree in Hospitality and Event Management in 2013. Being a lifelong Oklahoman, DiAnne has lived most of her life in Tulsa. Currently, she and her husband, David, live in Broken Arrow. DiAnne became an advocate for breast cancer causes several years ago when a good friend successfully battled the disease. Her mother also battled the disease, and she has many friends who have continued their own personal breast cancer battles. She believes that BCAP fills a very unique void that is not met by other breast cancer support groups. Being able to pay rent/mortgage and utilities is the last thing a patient needs to worry about while undergoing treatment. BCAP helps to make the road to recovery a bit easier for patients in need.
