SATURDAY SEP 3 THE MORE DIFFICULT THE VICTORY, THE GREATER THE HAPPINESS IN WINNING. Pelé Welcome Welcome to Switchbacks Stadium! Today we continue our 2016 campaign at home; which centers around an environment that every other USL team fears to enter. Last year the Switchbacks won 10 USL matches at home including a 2-0 playoff victory over Seattle Sounders FC 2. The Switchbacks also outscored opponents by 25 goals in games played at Switchbacks Stadium. A combination of the high elevation and enthusiastic crowds makes Switchbacks Stadium a fortress for opposing teams to enter. There is an incredible amount of excitement surging in the United Soccer League (USL) right now. The league has more than doubled from the fourteen teams in 2014 to 29 teams for the 2016 season. Right before your eyes, American soccer is evolving and Colorado Springs is an important part of it! The Switchbacks had their inaugural season last season where they made the playoffs and fell just one point short of a regular season Western Conference title. The team has brought back 15 of the 22 players that made up the 2015 roster. With the return of those 15 players and the addition of new players, the Switchbacks are determined to make a championship run into the 2016 USL playoffs. Weidner is proud to partner with the Switchbacks on their 2016 run for the Cup RentCoSprings.com With the leadership of our Head Coach, Steve Trittschuh, and Owner, Martin Ragain, we are developing strong partnerships. The Switchbacks are investing with leading (and willing) clubs Pride SC and Real Colorado, to re-establish the Colorado Foxes PDL team to be located near Castle Rock. From recreation to competitive soccer, this community is going to generate the top male and female soccer athletes in the country! “Join the Climb” and purchase your season tickets as the Switchbacks FC compete for a championship in the 2016 USL season! Last weekend the Switchbacks lost 2-1 in the dangerous heat of Edinburg, Texas as Rio Grande Valley FC continued their late-season push towards the top of the USL’s Western Conference table. A first half goal from left back Josh Suggs gave the Switchbacks a deserved lead, before two Rubén Luna penalty kicks saw the hosts snatch all three points. The disappointment of the final result against the Rio Grande Valley FC Toros was compounded by the dismissal of two Switchbacks who will now be suspended for Saturday’s match against the Galaxy II: Central defender Josh Phillips and winger Miguel Gonzalez were both sent off for their second bookable offense late in the second half. A silver-lining of the USL’s suspension process is that center back Christian Ibeagha, who was thought to have picked up his fifth yellow card of the season – which would have necessitated a one-game suspension – had his yellow card against the Orange County Blues FC on May 27 th rescinded. Ibeagha will be available for selection on Saturday, although Switchbacks Head Coach Steve Trittschuh remained mum on which personnel would be tasked with facing the Galaxy II. “We always play well against them [LA II] and we’ve raised our level whenever they’ve come here in the past,” said Trittschuh. “I feel whichever players we put out on Saturday will perform well – we have to. As a team we know what we have to do and that’s pretty simple; we have to win.” Just a point behind the Switchbacks in the USL’s Western Conference, the Los Angeles Galaxy II are closing in on their third consecutive USL playoff place after an impressive 2-1 victory against Arizona United SC on Wednesday evening in the Valley of the Sun. 19-year- old Los Angeles-area native Adonis Amaya capped a brilliant individual performance with an assist and a goal, as Los Dos Head Coach Curt Onalfo’s squad registered their first win since July 23rd. Galaxy II defender Bradley Diallo played just over an hour against Arizona United on his return from a serious knee injury that saw the French left back miss the opening six months of the 2016 USL season. With Major League Soccer persisting in their failure to recognize the international break, the Los Angeles Galaxy and Galaxy II are without key players during the current international friendlies and qualifiers. Galaxy II defender Jefrey Payeras was called up to the senior Guatemalan National Team for the upcoming World Cup Qualifiers against Trinidad and Tobago (September 2nd , Hasely Crawford Stadium, Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago) and St. Vincent and the Grenadines (Sept. 9th, Estadio Nacional Mateo Flores, Guatemala City, Guatemala). By far the highest scoring team in the USL’s Western Conference, the Galaxy II lead from the front behind the goal-scoring exploits of Ariel Lassiter and Jaime Villarreal. Lassiter lasted an hour in the win over Arizona United SC before being replaced by United States youth international Bradford Jamieson IV. Despite the headline-catching goals of Lassiter and Villarreal, Manhattan Beach, California native Alejandro Covarrubias remains the Galaxy II’s most influential player. Able to dictate the pace-of- play from a deep-lying central midfield position, Covarrubias isn’t afraid to support the attack and has found himself increasingly vital to the Galaxy II’s offensive output. The Galaxy II inflicted a tough 1-0 defeat on the Colorado Springs Switchbacks in the final game of the 2015 regular season that saw the Switchbacks miss out on vital playoff positioning. While not referencing that game directly, Switchbacks players were quick to note the increased impetus that comes with facing their rivals from Los Angeles. “We’re all looking forward to another battle with the Galaxy II,” was goalkeeper Devala Gorrick response to being asked about the obstacles brought by Los Dos. “I’m feeling confident and extra-motivated after an undeserved loss in our last game and I know we can turn it around on Saturday.” “Los Angeles [Galaxy II] is always a good challenge for us,” said midfielder Rony Argueta. “Their movement off the ball is great so we have to stay focused and keep them in front of us at all times. We know it won’t be an easy game but it’s been good to have this week of practice and now we need to make it pay off.” “I think we’re feeling optimistic about Saturday,” said Switchbacks captain Luke Vercollone after a mid-day practice in the altitude of the Air Force Academy. “We see the opportunity and where we are in the league so we’re going to work as hard as we can for all three points.” As just four regular season matches remain and with both Josh Phillips and Miguel Gonzalez suspended for the Galaxy II’s visit, it’s all hands on deck for the Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC. With Superhero Night in the stands at Switchbacks Stadium and fireworks to follow the final whistle, the Switchbacks know a raucous home crowd will go a long way to helping secure a second consecutive playoff berth. “It helps us; being at home always helps,” said Head Coach Steve Trittschuh. “If we can use it and take care of our results and keep pushing forward then we’ll see where we fall in the end.” Our Journey 1 2 6 November 25, 2013 Franchise Approved The USL and MLS approved Ragain Sports’ franchise application 7 December 5, 2013 Franchise Announced Mayor Steve Bach, USL President Tim Holt, and Franchise Owner Ed Ragain announced the team at the Penrose House 3 January 24, 2014 Name Announced Ragain Sports, LLC announced its team name at Jack Quinn’s Pub downtown. October 16, 2014 Pro Soccer Kickoff LA Galaxy II faced off against Arizona United SC in the first ever pro soccer exhibition in Colorado Springs. The Stadium saw nearly 3,000 fans fill the stadium to watch the two teams compete. Arizona United’s Long Tan scored the only goal of the match to substantiate all the press the Chinese native has been receiving. April 4, 2015 Switchbacks Kickoff After months of anticipation, the Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC finally kicked off for the first time in front of a crowd of 3,000 against Oklahoma City Energy FC in what would be the beginning of a new rivalry. September 25, 2015 10 Playoffs At Switchbacks Stadium After finishing 3rd in the Western Conference the Switchbacks played Seattle Sounders 2 in the first round of the Western Conference playoffs at Switchbacks Stadium.
