A CSA is a farm that grows for a group of families. Members join before the season begins and receive a weekly basket of farm products. Cibola Farms AnteSEEDent Barry Bader info@anteseedent.com icon! Non-Profit Org. U.S. Postage PAID Permit No. 57 Warrenton, VA he Madison County Farmers Market partnered with their local Extension and Social Services offices to evaluate offering a SNAP program at their Saturday market. In 2013, in order to test the willingness of SNAP customers to shop at the Madison market, $25 worth of tokens were given to 20 families enrolled in SNAP via Social Service. Of the $500 distributed to these 20 families, only $52 worth of tokens was redeemed during the 2013 and 2014 market seasons. This year the market is taking a step back to determine what barriers they face in developing a successful SNAP program. Those barriers could include: lack of public transportation, a need for more program outreach, or greater vendor involvement. Market organizers are hopeful that a SNAP program will eventually be part of their services. If there is good participation from SNAP users and market vendors alike, the market could work on getting SNAP certified and have a volunteer run the filing and processing, and handing out of market tokens. With a willingness to develop handouts on how good nutrition equals better health, fresh produce recipes for economical meals, farming practices of their market vendors, and the possibility of a Double Dollars program—a matching funds incentive program for market SNAP users, the market has great potential to be a resource for the SNAP community. But then your head turns toward the large sliding glass doors at the back, and you realize that things are a bit different here—you’re actually looking out across an expansive field of crops. It’s from those very fields where a large percentage of the Market’s fruits and veggies come from. And it’s that close connection that Jim Messick, a Fauquier County native, hopes people feel when they visit the Market. “We invite people to go out to the fields to see how the vegetables are being grown to have a better understanding of where their food comes from,” says Jim. So after selling some produce at a small stand on the property, they decided to invest in a more permanent structure, which opened just last year. “It was quite a leap for us- taking the farm in a completely new direction,” says Jim. In addition to buying produce and a few prepared food items in the store, people also have the option of joining the CSA or having a more hands on experience in the pick-your-own produce patches. And when you take a closer look at the other products they sell in the store, you realize that the majority of them are from local farms and artisans. Jim explains the goal is “to create a place where people can easily access fresh local products.” Wilevington Farm Blue Ridge Beef Evans-Wells Farm Dick & Sharon Williams (540) 937 · 3447 swilliams@vabb.com Michael Barreda & Leslie Grayson (540) 592 · 3469 blue.ridge4@gmail.com Dr. Anthony Wells (540) 336 · 1181 drarwells1@aol.com Sells on-site (open mid Sept-Oct, 9 am-5 pm) and at Tri-County Farmers Market Sells On-Site U-Pick On-Site, June - September Grass-Fed Beef Sold by the 1/2 or the 1/4 (Cuts Individually Frozen & Wrapped in Cryovac) Multiple Varieties of Tomatoes 11278 Homeland Road Rixeyville Assorted Pumpkins and Gourds, Assorted Butters and Jams FAUQUIER Angelic Beef Farm Quartz Hill Farm, LLC Sell on-site (call for best times), local delivery available Messick’s Farm Market 11170 St. Paul’s Road Remington Doug Linton (540) 439 · 2019 quarter-mor@vabb.com www.angelicbeef.com Sells at Oakton, Reston, and Gainesville Farmers Markets, Hormone and additive free Piedmontese Beef Ayshire Farm 21846 Trappe road Upperville (540) 592 · 7018 orders@ayrshirefarm.com www.ayrshirefarm.com Year ‘round through the Home Farm Store in Middleburg, VA and served at Hunter’s Head Tavern in Upperville as well as in many other local restaurants and independent markets. Christmas trees, beehives, shiitake mushroom logs, chickens and a large garden cover the hillside that looks west to the Blue Ridge Mountains. It’s hard to believe that about thirty years ago, the farm started out as a retirement hobby for Jim Mello when he bought the property and started selling at the Warrenton Farmers’ Market. Over the decades though, it has become the center point for the entire family and almost everyone has a role to play during Christmas tree season. The farm and adjacent properties that Jim’s children now own, also serve as a space for other creative endeavors, including a studio where his wife Sally and their daughter Jeanne make beautiful hooked rugs. Jim’s grandson Stephen recently decided to start his own career in farming, and he is reveling in the opportunity to continue what his From left to right Jeanne, Stephen, Sally, Amanda and Jim grandfather started. As Stephen shows me the new greenhouse that went up this winter, it’s clear that he shares his grandfather’s passion for this line of work. He and his girlfriend Amanda Martindale will continue to operate under the Oak Shade brand, but they will expand their part of the business by selling plants and more produce. In addition to being able to lease some of the property, Stephen is able to take advantage of a loyal customer base. “The hardest part of farming is building relationships with people that result in a reputation for great products and Pops has made a lot of friends throughout the years,” explains Stephen. With a smile that the community has come to love, Jim adds, “It’s been gratifying to see the change in people’s attitudes and young people like Stephen and Amanda wanting to be farmers.” All Natural Pork Sausage, Pork Chops, Baby Back Ribs, Loin Roasts, Bacon, All Natural Beef; Seasonal produce as available P & J Greenhouse and Garden 325 Azalea Court Madison Pam and Jimmy Jarrell (540) 718 · 7309 pjjjarrell2@gmail.com www.pandjgreenhouse.com Sells by CSA, On-Site Sun 1-5 pm & Mon 9-5 pm, Farm Stand at Reva Market Saturdays 10-4 pm, Madison Exxon Fridays 3-6:30 pm, Farmers Markets (Forest Lakes & Madison) Seasonal Produce, Herb-Infused Oils, Jams and Jellies, Dried Herbs, Herbal Tinctures, Vegetable and Flower Plants Warrenton Saturday Farmers Market South Fifth and Lee Streets (Municipal Parking Lot D on Lee Street) Warrenton Anna Maas (540) 347 · 6267 amaas@warrentonva.gov April - October, Saturdays, 7 am - Noon April 25-November 21, Saturdays 7:30 am - 12 noon MADISON Wednesday Farmers Market at CFC Farm and Home Store Culpeper Madison County Farmers Market 15172 Brandy Road, between Walmart and Target Culpeper By Marco Sánchez 346 Caves Ford Lane Orange FARMERS MARKETS Corner East Davis and Commerce Streets Downtown Culpeper Oak Shade Farm Papa Weaver’s Pork Sells at Farmers Markets (Orange, Madison and Spotsylvania Rt 3), Farm Clubs, Retailers, Wholesalers Mary Ruth’s Garden Cabrito by reservation, Broilers, Free Range Eggs, French Alpine Dairy Goats Fresh Shiitake, Oyster, and Lions Mane Mushrooms year round, Mushroom Ravioli, Mushroom Broth, GF ‘crab cakes’, Mushroom Tinctures, Mushroom Teas Madison Eats Local Food Club Seasonal produce and berries, pastured poultry and eggs.
