helping to make the Southgate Clinic a mecca
for health and wellness!
“Our members help harvest food from our
garden, then we create all kinds of fresh,
healthy salads,” says Executive Director Sara
Shields, RN, MA.
“It’s a great learning
experience and gardening is very soothing.”
Lead Gardener and Integrated Health Team
Coordinator Jessica Newsome, RN, says the
garden is sprouting kale, brussel sprouts, bok
choy, broccoli, romaine lettuce, red leaf lettuce,
red cabbage, tomatoes, basil and peppers.

MI Healthy Mind Makes News, Billboards, and Social Media
MI Healthy Mind Co-Hosts Michael Hunter and
Elizabeth Atkins are making a multimedia splash

Billboards are letting folks across Metro Detroit

about mental illness, addiction and much more.
The pair recently took their message to the
airways on WCHB 1200 AM with Host Cliff
Russell, during two interviews that spanned
topics as suicide, addiction, and race.
“What you’re doing is very important,” says
Detroit radio veteran Cliff Russell. “Your mission
can help a lot of people who are afraid to talk
about the tough issues that affect our health.”
Hunter and Atkins were also featured in The
Michigan Chronicle, after reporter Donald James
and photographer Martez Miller visited a taping of
MI Healthy Mind.

EMPLOYEES OF THE MONTH

DESMOND BRITTON
Eastern Market staff surprised Clinical
Therapist Kellee Negussie with a baby
shower, just days before her bundle of
joy came into the world.
The celebration included baby gifts
and a delicious cake. Now Kellee is
home enjoying the baby with her
family. Congratulations, Kellee!
is Team Wellness
Center’s Employee of the Month at the
Eastern Market Clinic. He was celebrated at
a reception with EM staff, and awarded with a
plaque and a reserved parking space.
“I thought my work went unnoticed
because what we do in security is
confidential,” says Britton, 24, a member of
the U.S. Army’s National Guard who aspires
to become a federal agent. “I feel honored
that I’m making a difference and helping
people.”
That’s why Team Clinical Therapist
Destiny Sims nominated him. “Desmond
goes over and beyond the call of duty and
embodies what it means to be a team player,”
she says. “He doesn’t set his bar at just
enough; he completely removes the bar.”
Congratulations, Desmond! You make
us proud!

relationships with, and I enjoy helping
people.”
Southgate Executive Director Sara
Shields says Melton goes above and beyond.
“She is fantastic! She has really good
customer service and she’s really helpful to
all of the employees. She’s really smart and

Did you know that the scent of
lavender can help calm people in
ways that facilitate their healing
and recovery?
“Aromatherapy is a big trend in
behavioral health care,” says
Sara Shields, RN, MA, Executive
Director of the Southgate Clinic.
“Movement, including dance,
can be another compliment to
medication.”
Shields will soon implement
some techniques learned while
attending the American Holistic
Nurses Conference in Branson,
Missouri. “Some therapists are
using aromatherapy Playdoh to
combat stress,” she says. “I’ve
used
lavender
and
it’s
scientifically proven to create
calm and relaxation.”
