NAIDOC Week
This week we celebrate NAIDOC Week, looking to the present and future of our Aboriginal students and remembering the past.
This is a celebration of an ancient culture and a bright present and future. We will share a significant day of celebration and
learning with our primary school partners.
There will be a number of activities this week that will involve all of our students.
School Social and Rewards Day
The school social on Monday night is a thanks to all of our students who have worked together to get through a very difficult term. Like all of
the Dungog community, we were affected by the floods and their impact on many of our families. It has been heartening to watch the way our
students and staff have worked together to help, counsel and support each other through this time of loss and tragedy. We hope for more
positive times next term, and acknowledge that the hard lessons of this term will stay with us for a very long time. Thanks especially to the SRC
who are organising the social and who put forward the idea that it should be free for all students in recognition of our need for a positive end to
the term.
Students who have achieved a positive semester – no negative comments on our behaviour monitoring system in terms 1 and 2 –were
rewarded with a special day on Friday 19th June.
Congratulations to all these students who are showing the school’s values of Respect, Responsibility and Personal Best in everything they do
at school.
Positive Events from last week
It was a busy week last week with a number of important and enjoyable activities that deserve recognition and congratulations to everyone
involved.
1. Business Enterprise Day on Monday: this is the third time we have held the BE day and it was, again, a great success. Year 11
Business Studies students develop a business concept that will appeal to a specific group of Customers – students at recess and
lunch times. No surprise that the businesses involve food. The students develop the business concept, including the product,
advertising, presentation, costs etc, then sell the product to their very willing customers. All profits go to a charity nominated by each
group. This is a very successful and popular event that we all look forward to each year. Well done to all the students and their
teachers, Ms Archer and Mrs Neilson.
2. The senior drama class entered a group-developed play for the Mental Health Awareness competition in Newcastle. This competition
is open to all schools in this region – our students succeeded in getting through to the finals and receiving an Encouragement Award.
Very well done to Mrs Crane and her students – continuing a tradition of success and excellence in this competition.
3. Flood Mud evening – so many present and past students getting together with the Dungog community for an evening of great
entertainment.
It is good to finish the term on a positive note, knowing that this half-way mark in the school year will lead to better times next term.

Student Achiever of the Week Award
This week’s recipient is: Tabatha Beisler Year 8
Tabatha is always a conscientious student in HSIE and applies herself to all tasks. Her Angkor-pedia task was
outstanding and displayed Tabatha’s commitment to always doing her personal best.
Tabatha will receive a certificate and $25 voucher.
Massive week for DHS sport
On Monday the 13 years and 15 years boys’ league teams played their Knights Knockout quarter finals under lights at Raymond Terrace. This
is certainly the first time that two teams from Dungog High have progressed past the zone stage of this very prestigious event. The 15’s went

up against a very strong St Joseph’s Aberdeen. Dungog got off to a strong start having several sets at the Aberdeen line only to be held up by
a very hard working defence. Gradually Aberdeen took control of the game and the ensuing weight of possession told and they ran out
winners.
The 13’s took on perennial favourites St Joseph’s Lochinvar. Lochinvar were a very organised team who made very few errors and consistently
completed their sets to good effect. The Dungog team was equally impressive in defence and charged forward relentlessly in attack. Lochinvar
were able to rotate fresh players onto the field and eventually wore the boys down, scoring a couple of tries from individual efforts. Dungog
High didn’t give up and battled on to gamely to score the last try of the match.
We have fielded teams in three age groups this year and each of the teams have progressed past the Port Stephens rounds to be ranked in
the top 8 teams in the Hunter region. Well done to all the boys who represented Dungog High with responsibility and respect.
The Girls’ volleyball team played in a under 17 Year’s gala day organised by Hunter Sports
High School. The very young team played spectacular volleyball at a standard much
higher than their older opponents. Although the girls finished 5th on the day they won much
praise for their skill level and sportsmanship.
The Open Girls’ Volleyball team played the Regional final with the hope of joining the Boys
team at the final 16 event in Sydney next term. They started on fire taking the first set 25 –
16. Their opponents Morriset then
took control of the second set
leading at one stage 18 – 8 before
the Dungog girls rallied and
fought back finally losing the set
25 – 22. The third set contained
the most outstanding play Mr
Francey has seen from the both teams; every point became a rally with no team willing
to concede the set. Morriset eventually took advantage of a rare error and won the set
30 – 28. The next set was similar with Dungog fighting back to tie the game 24 all but
were unable to sustain their momentum eventually losing the set and with it the final
28 – 26. The girls can be proud of their efforts as their standard of play has improved
markedly over the last few years. Not only did the girls play with skill they played with
honour and integrity above that of their opposition. Good luck to the boys next term.
The team would also like to congratulate Elyse Standing for successfully making the
Hunter Open Girls tennis team – well done Elyse!
CAREERS NEWS
GIRLS’ CHOICES SUMMER SCHOOL AND LIVE IT! FOR BOYS
The University of Newcastle’s Girls’ Choices Summer School (6-10 December 2015) and LIVE IT! (for boys) (13-17 December 2015)
programs, are five-day residential experiences for Year 9 students from equity target groups across NSW. The programs are designed to help
students build on their potential to succeed in years 10, 11 and 12 and expose them to the range of study and career options that exist for HSC
graduates.
Participants will experience life on campus - just like a real uni student. This involves staying on campus, following a timetable and completing
activities inside real university lecture theatres, laboratories and classrooms. Participants will also undertake field trips to local organisations to
see their possible future careers in action.
Along with meeting the equity criteria, students should be willing to be challenged by new experiences and have the potential (this may be
unrealised) to succeed in their senior years.
Applications close on 26 JUNE 2015 and require Teacher and Principal support of their application. For more information or to download the

UNIVERSITY OF NEWCASTLE ASPIRATIONS STUDY
Over the past 4 years, students, parents and staff at Dungog High have been participating in this Study to investigate what motivates and
inspires students' future directions.
This year, students in Year 8, 10 and 12 are being surveyed. Parents of students in these years are also invited to complete an online survey if
they have not previously done so.

Year 11 Enterprise Day
Wow, another successful (and exhausting) Enterprise Day has been completed at DHS. The day is
part of the assessment task for our Year 11 Business Studies students and they are required to run a
business at school for the day.
Our businesses for the day, the charities they supported and the total amounts raised were as
follows:

Sausage Shack, supporting the Fred Hollows Foundation, raised $300.75
Bacon n Egg Shed, supporting the McGrath Foundation, raised $414.65
Slice of Heaven, supporting Dungog Flood Relief, raised $501.60
Fire n Ice, supporting Dungog Flood Relief, raised $259.15
Scoops n Smiles, supporting Father O’Reilley’s Youth Off the Streets, raised $92.70
A massive $1568.85 was raised on the day and the cheques will be sent to the charities shortly. A
huge thanks to Mrs Neilson and Ms Archer, Mrs Edwards and all the staff, students and parents who
helped support the day.
MUSIC NEWS
It is quite amazing how fast the term flies past as we embark on our Music ‘adventures’.
STARSTRUCK
Once again Starstruck was a great success with students involved in both Choir and Dance this year. The early morning starts (5:30am is not
the best time of day even though some people would refute that fact) but the train is very relaxing while the students are quite docile as they
are still half asleep. Of course the return trip has a different atmosphere as they are all hyped up and we have to make sure we sit away from
the ‘Quiet Carriage’.
However, Dungog High students are always well behaved and since we arrived early on the two days we were in the Hall of Industry, they
were also very helpful and set out 450 chairs for the Choir rehearsal all by themselves. Great work!!!!

A SUCCESSFUL ‘FLOOD MUD’ CONCERT at the James Theatre.
This Fundraiser was enthusiastically received by every student and staff member at Dungog High. The positive response from Dungog Public
School, St Josephs Primary School, Rhee Taekwondo and Dungog High’s Ex-students was overwhelming.
What an amazing night, hosted by the ever witty Felix Prentice. The Music was exceptional and very well received by our huge audience.
Some of our Ex-students hadn’t had the chance to sing or play since last September when they completed their Higher School Certificates so
it was surprising that they were easily as good or even better than last year. WOW!!!

Special thanks to Louise Knight, Rosalind Gavin, Michelle Wilson, the Library staff, Light and Sound Crew and all the other staff for their
support.
A special thanks as well to all parents and helpers who assisted in packing, stacking and returning all the equipment to the Music rooms after
the show as we had to clear the James for the ‘Rewards’ films on Friday morning.
This was a great night and the James Theatre was a huge hit with our current students who would love to make this an annual event. Great
venue suggestion Ronnie Piper! Well done to all.
The students who came back to play and sing are also very busy as they embark on the next stage of their lives and I have listed them below
just to show that the future is in good hands with so many of our own choosing to further their education in so many different fields.

Year 10 Subject Selection Process - Interviews
Student Interviews – Week 1, Term 3 (Tuesday 14 – Wednesday 15 July 2015)
Each student in Year 10 will be interviewed by a Head Teacher, with the support from the Careers Adviser, in relation to what they want to do
after high school and what subjects they are considering selecting. Students will only be required at school for their interview. They will make
their first round selection on this day. The interview schedule is below:
