Ticket sales are progressing very well. Presentation Night is a major event for Balwyn High School which provides us with the opportunity to recognise the efforts of our students. Having watched the students rehearse, it is clear that it will also provide us with some fantastic entertainment. David Nichols Assistant Principal It is expected that all year 7 and 8 students attend Presentation Night as they will form the mass choir for the finale. It also provides these students with a unique opportunity to experience performing at one of Melbourne’s premier venues. Directions to the venue and instructions regarding timing of arrival and uniform will be included in the next addition of ‘The Lion’. Tickets are available online through the parent portal with details available on the school website. In the next few weeks, students in Years 7 – 9 will complete their final assessment tasks. Balwyn High School has a proud, successful academic tradition where ‘it’s cool to do well’ and in most cases students maximise their outcomes. Success at school is not only a partnership between teacher and student – parents play a vital role as well. At peak assessment times, it is vital that parents are supportive of their son/ daughter by: Return to page 1 • Being mindful that your son/daughter will need to spend more time completing assignments and studying for tests/exams over the coming weeks; • Ensuring they have a quiet and distraction-free work environment; • Helping create a structured work program to consolidate the ‘habit of work’; 3 THE LION© IS A PUBLICATION OF BALWYN HIGH SCHOOL, BUCHANAN AVENUE, NORTH BALWYN, VIC 3104, TELEPHONE +61 9819 7911, FAX +61 9819 7395 balwynhs@balwynhs.vic.edu.au, www.balwynhs.vic.edu.au ISSUE 19 14 NOVEMBER 2013 Assistant Principals’ Report cont. • Talking to your son/daughter about the skills they have learnt, the ‘work process’ not just about the outcome; • Recognising that this time of year is also a learning process where good learning habits are developed and can be utilised and further developed next year; • Being mindful of the study/relaxation balance; and • Contacting the relevant Student Learning Well Being Managers if you would like to discuss any concerns regarding your son/daughter. In conclusion, while students strive for a successful conclusion to their studies in 2013, it is beneficial to reflect on the revision process employed by the student as this is a vital skill that needs to be continually refined in readiness for the next year and it also vital to recognise the positive effect of the supportive parent. They conclude for Year 12 students on Thursday 21 November. The Senior School students are to be commended on the way in which they have approached the examinations and the purposeful manner in which examinations have been conducted. Year 10 and 11 students will receive their results from their teachers in the week after exams. It is most important that students take the opportunity to reflect on their performance and identify areas for improvement in 2014. Josie Millard Director of Senior School Year 12 students and Year 11 students who completed a Unit 3&4 subjects will receive their results through the VCE Results and ATAR service on Monday 16 December. VCAA and VTAC offer students a range of options for accessing results including internet, SMS and mail. The internet service is available from Monday 16 December to Friday 20 December at ... www.resultsandatar.vic.edu.au Students may register to get results by SMS by sending a text message to 19 787 888. All details for obtaining VCAA and VTAC results are to be found in the VTAC Navigator. Once these results have been obtained students may be in a position to consider changing their VTAC preferences. The Year 12 Student Managers and the Careers Counsellor, Erin Shale will be available to support students in making these important decisions. Course Confirmation and VCE Ignition Programs Course confirmation and VCE Ignition information has been provided in detail in previous newsletters, Compass newsfeed and year level assemblies as well as in emails to students. Our new Year 7 students [2014] will be joining us for an Orientation evening on December 5 and then Orientation Day on Tuesday 10 December. Our current students will also be going through the process of re-enrolment at the beginning of December. The Course Confirmation and Enrolment packages are all available to parents on Newsfeed, on the Compass Parent Portal. Please read carefully through the accompanying documentation which is provided. I ask that you sit down with your child and read through the ICT Acceptable Usage Policy, the Uniform Policy and the Student Code of Conduct before you both sign your agreement with these. Alexeena Murphy Director of Middle School Year 9 parents should have received a letter last week regarding the Examination period and our expectations of students. As of next week, all students should be really commencing their revision and ensuring they have a clear understanding of the expectations of each subject’s examination, in terms of the key skills and knowledge they will be required to demonstrate. For students in 9D, arrangements are more complex as they will be also undertaking their VCE Ignition Programs in coming weeks. I encourage 9ALP parents to read the information provided carefully and to contact myself or Jonathan Heard with any queries. I wish all our students undertaking examinations the best of luck. Week 10 of this term commences with Presentation Night. Thank you to the Year 7 and 8 parents who have already given permission through the Parent Portal for their child to attend the day time rehearsal for this wonderful occasion. All Year 7 and 8 students are required to attend the evening. On the Tuesday after Presentation Night, all students have a late start to school – commencing the day at recess. They will then begin our transition week activities, with the Year 7s commencing a Year 8 program, the Year 8s being introduced to the key ideas behind our Year 9 Xplore program, and our Year 9 students making their entry into the senior school program. The convention was open to secondary school students in Years 9 -12. Its aim was to provide students with an opportunity to engage in the political process and voice their ideas about democracy. The topic of the convention was ‘Australia’s Version of Democracy is Flawed.’ Ben Beagley Year 9 Language Centre Teacher Below is a student refelection on the convention. Firstly I want to thank the school for giving me the chance to attend this year’s State Constitutional Convention at Parliament House. As an international student who has been here for only 3 months, I was so lucky to sit in Parliament House sharing opinions on politics with other school students just like politicians and authorities. It was really a fantastic and unforgettable experience! On Monday morning Crystal, Sali and I went to Parliament House. Parliament House is so grand but the inside is not as large and serious as I imagined. The basic green colour made me feel at ease instead. At the start of the convention we were very lucky to listen to a speech given by one of the politicians. The most impressive part was discussion time. We were divided into different groups and every student could volunteer to have a maximum 2 minutes addressing their statement on democracy. The discussion sometimes became very heated. I was shocked by their awesome opinions and passion in public speaking. I was sure some participants must become real politicians someday. At last, we voted on the opinions and solutions each group gave. I really enjoyed this democratic time. Finally, I want to say that although democracy in Australia needs to improve, we are still fortunate to live in a democratic country. A big issue we talked about a lot is that many youths do not pay attention to politics. I hope this problem will be fixed in the future and the government can engage more and more teenagers to care about politics. Iris Lin, Year 9 From the First Aid Office - Hay Fever Season. This year appears to be a particularly bad season for hay fever sufferers. There are many very good medications, nasal sprays and eye drops available over the counter at your local pharmacy that provide relief to the distressing symptoms of hay fever. These symptoms include; runny nose, itchy eyes, sneezing, itchy mouth and ears and feeling generally unwell. The trick to getting relief from hay fever is to take your medication on a regular basis during the worst time of the year. Please note that the First Aid Office does not stock any hay fever medication. The Readers’ Cup is a competition that rewards students who enjoy and are good at reading. Each year we have the ‘Balwyn High School Reader’s Cup’ competition that is open to all students in Years 7 to 9. This year three teams, of four Year 8 students from Balwyn High School, competed against teams from other Melbourne secondary schools for the 2013 State Reader’s Cup. Each team provided answers to questions about each book as well making a creative presentation that used technology. It was a very tight competition this year where all teams really knew their books and our students put an amazing effort into their impressive creative pieces. The winning team on the day was a team of students from 8D and 8F: Bethany Luo, Nathan Nguyen, Rachel Ong and Catherine Zhou. Congratulations to these students and to all students who participated in the competition against other schools: Daniel Qin, Lachlan Pham, Tymon Shih, Edmund Chow, Jessica, Clark, Iris Li, Sandra Cheng and Angus Cramond. Katie Hopcraft Head of Food Technology Winning Recipes Mushroom Sandwich – Jim Parker Year 10 “This recipe is actually something that I have been working on for a while. I normally have mushrooms on toast for lunch on a weekend when there are mushrooms in the fridge, but I never thought that I could make it into more of a snack meal with other flavours. I started to explore what works with mushroom, and that initial idea became much clearer. I practiced and I eventually got it right and I was very pleased with myself. Also, what I love about this recipe is that it’s quite simple to make, even if you have had a long day at school.” Ingredients: • 4-5 Swiss Brown Mushrooms, Cut into Quarters • 1 clove of garlic, finely chopped • ½ long red chilli, seeds removed and finely chopped • 10 grams of goats cheese, broken up into pieces • 2 slices of bread, whichever bread you like • 2 sprigs of thyme • 1 tablespoon of olive oil • ½ - 1 teaspoon of balsamic vinegar • ½ a cup of rocket • Salt • Pepper Chilli and Thyme Mayonnaise: • 1 whole egg • 150 ml of canola oil • 1 teaspoon of Dijon Mustard • Pinch of Salt • 1 sprig of thyme • ½ a long red chilli, chopped and de-seeded • Lemon juice, to taste Method: 1. Get the mushrooms and knock off the stalk but don’t throw it away. Quarter the bigger mushrooms and halve the smaller ones. Finely chop the ½ clove of garlic, ½ the red chilli and the 2 sprigs of thyme. Heat a pan on a medium heat and add 1 tablespoon of olive oil. Add the mushrooms and sauté for at least 5 minutes with a little bit of salt and pepper, just to start them off cooking. 3. Get your bread (wholemeal, white or whichever bread you like) and toast it until golden brown. 4. Once the mushrooms have started to cook down a little bit, add the chopped chilli, garlic and the thyme leaves, then add the balsamic vinegar and let cook for another 5-10 mins until they are cooked. Make sure to stir this every so often so that nothing catches or burns on the pan. 5. For the mayonnaise, put the whole egg into a small blender; add the mustard, salt and a little bit of the olive oil, blend to a smooth consistency. Then keep the machine blending and add the remaining olive oil in a slow stream until you reach a thick, creamy consistency. Once it is at your desired thickness, add the lemon juice, ½ the chilli and the leaves of 1 thyme sprig.Give it one more blend to mix all these ingredients together. Taste and check for seasoning. 6. To assemble the sandwich, put some of the mayonnaise on the bottom piece of bread, then place the mushrooms on top, then break up some goat’s cheese and evenly disperse that around the mushrooms. Finish with some fresh rocket and put the final piece of bread on top. Enjoy this easy afterschool snack. Avocado and cherry tomato salsa wonton cases – Kavya Liyanage Year 8 “This recipe is a healthy, tangy choice for an afterschool snack. It’s also balanced in nutrition, low in sugar and fat, and has at least 170kj of energy, which gives us an energy boost. It’s mostly just vegetables and fruits, so I decided to add some salmon to balance the flavour out. When adolescents come running home from school we normally look for something bright, colourful and mouthwatering, I believe this is the perfect choice of a ‘party in the mouth snack’ depending on what your tastes are. Though it does start to soften up a bit, I guess you have to grab it while it lasts. Ingredients: • Olive oil spray • 2 avocados, halved, stones removed, peeled, mashed • 36 Shanghai wonton wrappers • 90g (1/3 cup) natural yoghurt • 10-12 drops red Tabasco pepper sauce • 1/2 small red onion, finely chopped • 1/3 cup chopped fresh coriander • 2 tbsp. fresh lemon juice • 1 x 250g punnet cherry tomatoes, coarsely chopped • Smoked Salmon Method: 1. Preheat oven to 190°C. Spray thirty-six 30ml (1 1/2-tbs) capacity mini muffin pans with oil to lightly grease. Place a wonton wrapper in each pan and press to line base and side. Bake for 8 minutes or until golden brown and crisp. Set aside in the pans to cool completely. 2. Meanwhile, place the avocado in a bowl. Add the yoghurt and stir to combine. Add the Tabasco sauce to taste. Combine the tomato, onion, and coriander and lemon juice in a separate bowl. Season with salt and pepper. 3. Spoon the avocado mixture evenly among the wonton cups. Arrange on a serving platter. Top with the tomato mixture and serve immediately. There was Ned Coleman’s stencil of Nicky Winmar, a pencil drawing of Tim Minchin and a quirky painting of Barry Humphries and Dame Edna Everage by Rachel Niesen. Year 9 International Students Immersion Program On Wednesday 30 October and Friday 1 November, Tutorial Captains in Year 9 ran an ‘Immersion Program’, for the Year 9 International Students. The Year 9 International Students, also known as ‘9P’, have been at Balwyn High School in the language centre since the beginning of Term 3. As of the beginning of 2014, these twelve students will move into Year 10 classes with the rest of the current Year 9 cohort. The aim of the Program was to allow the Year 9 International Students the opportunity to interact with their future Year 10 peers over a number of classes, and to experience what a typical school day is like for a mainstream Year 9 student. During Friday lunchtime, the Year 9 Tutorial Captains and the Year 9 International Students socialised over a pizza lunch, where they shared their interests and experiences with each other. This was an excellent opportunity for the Year 9 International Students to meet with their future peers prior to 2014, and allowed friendships to begin growing between the two groups. We are thankful to the Year 9 Tutorial Captains for their confidence and interest in this Program, and hope it becomes an annual feature of the Year 9 Calendar. We look forward to properly welcoming the Year 9 International Students into the Year 10 cohort at the beginning of 2014, and hope they enjoyed what the Program had to offer. Carly Richardson, James Shepherd, Year 9 Student Learning & Wellbeing Managers; Ben Beagley, Year 9 Language Centre Teacher Two weeks ago we had lessons with the Year 9 students, and that was very significant and exciting On Wednesday, I had classes with 9M. The social class was really fantastic and we combined History, Economics and Technology together to predict what human beings will be like in the future and whether we can move to another planet to live in a few years. To have social classes is a great approach to develop our imagination. On Friday we had Economics and Music class. We learnt what the stages of production are, and how they work. That lesson taught me a lot …. Finally we had Music class. That was quite different from the one in my previous school. Almost everyone could play a musical instrument. The most amazing part was that the students could create the lyrics and the tones just a few seconds after the teacher arranged the work. The students were very patient to teach us how to play the basic instruments and we felt very happy and interested. Overall, the classes were really fantastic and fabulous, and we are looking forward to the studies in Year 10 which we will have in a few months.” Lee Gu, Year 9 “Two weeks ago all of my classmates (9P) went to have lessons with other Year 9 students and we really had fun and experienced a lot during that week. All of us enjoyed having class with them because the students were really friendly to us and were always patient and taught us many rules. We made a lot of friends and we had very good friendship with them. I had English, Geography, Ceramics and PE with 9D but the class that I enjoyed a lot was the English class. During English I really admired the students in that class when their teacher asked them to discuss the topic and they could focus on it and finish the task quickly. Also, when the teacher asked them to share their ideals in class they were all willing to do that and did it very well. During lunchtime, we had pizza with the class captains and we talked a lot with them and developed really good friendships. However, time flies so fast. We had to finish classes with them and go back to our classroom, but we will never forget the time that we spent with them and I am really happy that we could communicate with them about study and could learn good points from each other. Finally, thanks to the teachers who gave us the chance to study with our peers.” Crystal Xu, Year 9 Return to page 1 12 THE LION© IS A PUBLICATION OF BALWYN HIGH SCHOOL, BUCHANAN AVENUE, NORTH BALWYN, VIC 3104, TELEPHONE +61 9819 7911, FAX +61 9819 7395 balwynhs@balwynhs.vic.edu.au, www.balwynhs.vic.edu.au ISSUE 19 14 NOVEMBER 2013 News cont. “Two weeks ago I had some classes with mainstream Year 9 students. I really enjoyed the time with them and I made some friends as well. First on Wednesday I had three periods of obligatory subjects with 9M. On Friday we elected two subjects and studied with many different Year 9 classes. On Wednesday we did two periods of social study and one period in P.E. In the social class I discussed the human future with 9M students. I thought they were very good at imagining and when I talked to them I felt comfortable. I fully agree with the way Year 9’s study. We worked in a group and shared our opinions. On Friday I had a really interesting day. First I studied Economics. I liked it and I found it easier than I thought. I would like to choose this subject next year. Then we did a power point about “humans being able to live on the Mars.” I experienced how Year 9 students work and I thought we can do it too. I believe next year I will have an exciting experience..” Spencer Mu, Year 9 “Two weeks ago,the language centre students had a chance to experience classes with local Year 9s. We enjoyed it! Not only did we make lots of friends it helped us prepare for next year’s study. During those two days, we got to choose some core lessons as well as elective lessons. I found so many differences compared to our study in the language centre. Instead of spending the whole day in one classroom, we experienced the fun of changing places after each class. I was also impressed by the atmosphere in class. By the way, we were divided into groups to go to different classes, and I chose 9D. Although the class had freedom for discussion, they’re still really organized and efficient. I also had a good time doing Ceramics and playing Baseball. Another thing I have to say is that the Year 9 students were really friendly and helpful to us. They told us what was going on in class, were patient and chatted with us in the break. Moreover, we spent a lunch time together having a pizza meal and talked with each other. That event was truly worthwhile as it let me know more about mainstream study and local student life. I am looking forward to next year’s study!” Iris Lin, Year 9 Return to page 1 13 THE LION© IS A PUBLICATION OF BALWYN HIGH SCHOOL, BUCHANAN AVENUE, NORTH BALWYN, VIC 3104, TELEPHONE +61 9819 7911, FAX +61 9819 7395 balwynhs@balwynhs.vic.edu.au, www.balwynhs.vic.edu.au ISSUE 19 14 NOVEMBER 2013 Music MONDAY 9 DECEMBER, 7.30PM, HAMER HALL, ARTS CENTRE MELBOURNE Tickets available through FROM the General Office & Parent Portal TICKETS AVAILABLE THE GENERAL OFFICE Bernadette Clayton Director of Music Calendar of Events Presentation Night Hamer Hall 7.30pm Monday 9 December 2013 The students are in the middle of rehearsals for Presentation Night and award winners have been notified. All games were played on the one day at Hislop Park in very cold conditions but fortunately there was no rain. Super 8’s rules have pairs of batters, all players bowl and wicket keep whilst the scoring system has “double” scores for all runs made where the ball passes the bowlers end stumps with a much smaller ground than traditional cricket. It enables high scoring (plenty of our students hit “8’s and “12’s” during the day), with every wicket taken gaining 5 runs to your batting score. Results are not known until after the game is concluded so it is a quick and exciting game right to the end. Robert Handrek Director of Sport Calendar of Events State Finals - Year 8 Girls Hockey Friday 15 November Super 8’s Cricket Regional Finals - Year 8 Boys Tuesday 19 November National Cheerleading Championships Friday 22 November State Finals - Year 7 Boys and Intermediate Boys Table Tennis Wednesday 27 November State finals - Year 7 boys Tennis Friday 29 November The Year 7 boys played three matches, winning 2 very close games then losing in the Round Robin format. They made the final but lost (in a close game) to the same school who defeated them in the pool games to finish in second place. Year 8 girls improved their skills immensely during the matches. They were able to win two of the four games and all enjoyed the day. Team B of the Year 8 boys were very competitive but were unable to actually win a game. The boys worked well as a team and had some patches of fantastic cricket but like our ashes team, could not do so consistently enough. The year 8 boys team went through the day undefeated and will now compete in the state finals late November. This group was made up of some novice cricketers and some very talented boys who teamed well, encouraged each other and look forward to the next stage. Dane Miftari, Jason Chen, Sarthak Goel and Divyam Madan were four extremely well organised and supportive coaches on the day who did a great job looking after the teams.
