Through brand new partnerships with WHYY’s Indie Lens Pop-up and the Royal Opera House On
Screen we expanded our programming in the last year. Featuring documentaries seen on the PBS
series ‘Independent Lens,’ Indie Lens Pop-Up is designed to engage local residents, leaders, and
organizations in discussion about what matters most - from contemporary social issues to family
and relationships. We invite you to join us to make friends, share stories, and join the conversation.
Our collaboration with the Royal Opera House brings the beauty, splendor, and artistry of
London’s Covent Garden to our own screen. For a fraction of the price of a plane ticket, you can
enjoy selections from the current 2015-2016 season filmed on location in the Royal Opera House.
It’s their most ambitious season to date with 6 operas and 6 ballets. Home to 2 of the world’s
great artistic companies, the Royal Opera and Royal Ballet, the Royal Opera House productions
include never before seen ballets, highly anticipated opera debuts, and classic revivals.
Our programming is important to us but we never forget that people are the foundation of
our theatre. Visitors often ask why Phoenixville was able to bounce back from the brink. The
theatre’s revival and the people who made it possible are at the top of a list of other events and
players critical to the town’s rebirth. Many of those volunteers and people continue to play a
crucial role in our ongoing success. Members, donors, patrons, and volunteers of ACT make it
possible for this “community treasure” to persist while many other small-town theatres have
vanished forever. If you visit for a film, you’ll be greeted by one of our over 200 active volunteers
who we celebrate annually at a special volunteer party.
While we were putting the final touches on this annual report we mourned the loss of
two of those people who made the theatre the vibrant, successful place it is today. Joel
Rickenbach and Earl Sitlinger were two volunteers who generously shared with us their
love for theatres, film and community. Both men had an extraordinary impact on
the organization and our programming in different but important ways. We will
miss them dearly.
Our Board and Staff continue to consider ways that our imminent building
expansion will inform our future programming, improve treasured
relationships and build new ones, and impact our historic theatre’s role
within the region. In the meantime, we’ll continue to bring you the
kind of films and performances you love and have come to expect
from the Colonial.
Thank you again for all you bring to the Colonial.
Enjoy this look back at our year and we will see
you here soon!
Board of Directors and Staff of ACT
Blobfest 16
We had the best Blobfest ever!! Okay, we say that
every year, but for sure this was the best. We’d
like to thank all the volunteers, the vendors and
our special guests: Mr. Lobo, Ghoul a Go-Go and
dearest Ricou Browning - THE Creature from the
Black Lagoon!! This year our sponsors made so
much possible. A special thank you to Horizon
Services, Salena Salon, Mainstay Inn and Shorty’s
Sunflower Café and Truck Stop.
The weather was perfect for the always great
costume contest and our wonderful shop owners
went way overboard with their façade and
window dressings. If you missed the amazing
costumes or the windows in town, be sure to
make the next Blobfest on July 8-10, 2016.
The ‘fest could not happen without our talented
and dedicated Blobfest Programming Committee
(Andee Miskiewicz, Shane Stone, Joan Kelly,
Cynyth Petersheim and Chuck Francisco);
our supremely organized Blobfest Volunteer
Leadership Committee (Denise Nissle, John and
Carla Schaeffer, Chuck Francisco, Curtis Schmitt,
Maryanne Buschini and John Odell); and the
over 60 volunteers who sell t-shirts, popcorn and
movie tickets and usher so that our visitors have
a wonderful experience.
The
Bacon
Brothers
11thAnnual
Members’ Party
On Oscar ™ night 2015 our members
once again came out in their full
regalia – black tie, movie-related
costume and pajamas, to be precise
- to fete the Colonial family of
members. Lou Amici, a member
for 15 years, is always dapper in his
Mummers costume; Team
Enigma impresses every year
with their fantastic group
costumes; and the Mudd
Family has made this event
an annual family outing for
many years. Our members are
our family and we are thrilled
to celebrate them, and the
movies, year after year!
A Benefit Concert
for Conservation and Culture
June 2015
The Colonial Theatre joined
with French & Pickering Creeks
Conservation Trust again in June to
present the Bacon Brothers. Both of
our organizations maintain built and
natural landmarks that contribute to
Chester County’s uniqueness and we
share many of the same, wonderfully
generous supporters. Culture and
conservation enrich all of our lives.
We are glad to celebrate both through
this annual event – a near sell-out this
year that featured a surprise video
during the performance!
The 8th Annual Robert Burns
Memorial Whisky Tasting
Whisky tasting at the Colonial has become a well-loved practice and
what better way to celebrate Robbie Burns’ birthday. Our Mistress of
Ceremonies Riannon Walsh always keeps the evening fresh with new choices of single
malts from different countries. Were you here? Did you love that award winning Japanese
single malt? The whisky tasting proceeds help support our Classic Film Series. Special
thanks to our committee members - Jim Lolli, Dick Lusch, David Wierz, Eric Shopf, Tom
Bromley and Janet Lewis. Join us for the 9th annual event on January 29, 2016.

across the country to Phoenixville and the
Colonial Theatre. The American Theatre Organ
Society (ATOS) members, attending their annual
conference in Wilmington, came to experience the
wonder that is the 3/24 Wurlitzer Opus 585 theatre
pipe organ, owned and maintained by the Theatre
Organ Society of the Delaware Valley (TOSDV).
On July 3rd the group traveled in 12 buses up from Wilmington for a concert with renowned
organist Mark Herman. Back again on Saturday July 4th, the Colonial hosted the young organist
competition, held each year at the conferences and featuring young talent from across the country.
Many thanks to Theatre Organ Society of the Delaware Valley for organizing this wonderful event.

Film Sponsorship
Film sponsorship is a unique, creative, and entertaining way for businesses
and individuals to support the Colonial. It plays a crucial role in allowing
us to continue to program our repertory film series as well as our
festivals (Blobfest and Splatterfest) by offsetting screening costs
such as screening rights, shipping, and overhead. Sponsorships
often include participatory activities for patrons, such as face
painting, hair styling, raffles and giveaways… even a snack lounge
in our third floor screening room! We had a record number of
sponsored films this year thanks to our 2014-15 sponsors!

2014-15
The Cultural Alliance report also makes some recommendations for the future that we’re
heartened to find we’ve already enacted. To succeed in a rapidly shifting landscape it urges
theatres to maintain focus on individuals, engage new audiences, and ensure that cultural
experiences are ‘socially relevant.’

Salena Salon
Perched here on the northern corner of Chester County, nearly sitting on the neighboring
Montgomery County line, Phoenixville’s Colonial Theatre is part of a region legendary for great
arts and cultural programming. Our community theatre happens to be a member of the Greater
Philadelphia Cultural Alliance. As we were working on this Annual Report, the Alliance revealed
its impressive 2015 Culture Across Communities document: an 11-city report detailing trends
in organizations like ours. Happily, its findings reveal that our own performance reflects some
regional trends. For example, revenue growth from memberships has been strong regionally and
we’ve seen some growth in the Colonial Theatre’s membership in this report’s fiscal year.

(Andee Miskiewicz, Shane Stone, Joan Kelly,
Cynyth Petersheim and Chuck Francisco);
our supremely organized Blobfest Volunteer
Leadership Committee (Denise Nissle, John and
Carla Schaeffer, Chuck Francisco, Curtis Schmitt,
Maryanne Buschini and John Odell); and the
over 60 volunteers who sell t-shirts, popcorn and
movie tickets and usher so that our visitors have
a wonderful experience.

June 2015
The Colonial Theatre joined
with French & Pickering Creeks
Conservation Trust again in June to
present the Bacon Brothers. Both of
our organizations maintain built and
natural landmarks that contribute to
Chester County’s uniqueness and we
share many of the same, wonderfully
generous supporters. Culture and
conservation enrich all of our lives.
We are glad to celebrate both through

ATOS Conference
In July, ACT welcomed over 400 visitors from
across the country to Phoenixville and the
Colonial Theatre.

SPONSORS
Enjoy this look back at our year and we will see
you here soon!

experiences are ‘socially relevant.’

2013-14
