HISTORIC
MARKER PROJECT
SAILFISH TRAIL
This project is sponsored
by Stuart Mainstreet in
Celebration of the
City’s Centennial
HISTORIC MARKER PROJECT
1
Many residents will recall the colorful turtle statues that sprinkled the
landscape a few years ago. The Historic Art Markers are reminiscent of the
Turtles on Parade in that, they are an artistic sculpture sure to garner the
curiosity of residents and tourists alike! What is a new twist, is that the
sailfish sculptures are permanent and strategically situated in an historic trail
marking some of the more interesting events and historic sites in the city!
A panel on the side of the sculpture illustrates historic photographs and
fascinating facts that will offer a new interest in even the most obscure spots!
Naming opportunities for sponsorship offer the most prominent recognition,
but QR codes can be added to drive visitors to local establishments. It is a
perfect blend of art, history, tourism, preservation and economic impact!

The Stuart Feed Store, originally the Geo. Parks Store, was built in 1901 and it remains the oldest commercial building still
standing. Walter Kitching built a general merchandise store which opened in early 1897, directly across the street from the newly relocated train depot.

The Potsdam subdivision consists of some of the area’s older homes and buildings. The 1892 Potsdam name for the small town
was changed to Stuart in June 1895, a short time after the railroad came through in 1894.
The first two-story concrete school structure for Stuart opened in 1909 with a capacity for about 120 students covering all
grade levels.

Originally The Stuart Drug Store in 1913, it has also served as The Stuart Post Office in 1916 and the site of the first pay phone
for the town. Constructed in 1913, the Train Depot Station serviced the community for decades until it was razed in 1967.
