WE WILL ACCOMPLISH THIS BY UTILIZING VALUABLE RESOURCES, INCLUDING OUR FELLOW CHAPTERS OF GAMMA IOTA SIGMA, THE FOX SCHOOL OF BUSINESS AND MANAGEMENT, A RICH TRADITION IN A STRONG PROFESSIONAL NETWORK AND A DISTINGUISHED ALUMNI CHAPTER OF GAMMA IOTA SIGMA. -3- FALL 2015 MEMBERSHIP HANDBOOK GAMMA IOTA SIGMA THE INTERNATIONAL RISK MANAGEMENT, INSURANCE AND ACTUARIAL SCIENCE COLLEGIATE FRATERNITY The idea of a national scholastic insurance fraternity actually started to become a reality when the Griffith Foundation for Insurance Education filed for incorporation in 1965. The following year, the OSU Insurance Society, which started at The Ohio State University in the early 1960's, petitioned and was chartered as the first Gamma Iota Sigma Chapter, thereafter called Alpha Chapter. At Bowling Green State University, Beta Chapter received its charter in 1967, and in 1969, the University of Cincinnati was chartered as Gamma Chapter. These events marked the beginning of what has now grown into a nucleus of 60 chapters located from California to Washington, D.C., and from Canada to Florida. In October of 2001 with the chartering of our 41st chapter at Fanshawe College, London Ontario, Canada, Gamma Iota Sigma became an international professional fraternity. A Grand Chapter or Executive Committee of Gamma Iota Sigma was formed from the original fraternity planning committee, appointed by the Griffith Foundation. The first Grand Chapter President was Warren L. Weeks, then a Griffith Foundation trustee. It was his commitment to the concept of a national student organization that lead to the eventual formation of Gamma Iota Sigma. There currently exists a Warren L. Weeks, Sr. Scholarship presented each year to a student member. Nominations for the award are made by local chapters. The rationale behind establishing a national student organization, as envisioned by the founders was: 1. A national fraternity has more prestige than a local society or club; 2. It would facilitate communication and participation with chapter members throughout the country; 3. By combining with others, the impact of the fraternity name as a visible entity would be enhanced; 4. By emphasizing scholarship and leadership qualities, ties between the college membership and industry leaders would be developed; and 5. There would be a synergism of academic creativity beyond the boundaries of any given university. The Annual Management Conference was first held in 1973. Since then, many of the local chapters have hosted the conference at least once. The Grand Chapter, initially consisting solely of Griffith Foundation trustees, has now evolved to a distinctly separate organization of insurance professionals, most of whom were members of Gamma Iota Sigma chapters while attending college. -4- FALL 2015 MEMBERSHIP HANDBOOK CHAPTER ROLL Chapter Alpha Beta Gamma Delta Epsilon Zeta Eta Iota Theta Kappa Lambda Mu Nu Xi Pi Omicron Rho (Listed by date of Charter) School Ohio State University Bowling Green State University University of Cincinnati Orange Coast College University of Alabama Georgia State University University of Georgia Florida State University Louisiana State University Arizona State University University of South Carolina University of Mississippi Central Michigan University University of Connecticut-Storrs Mississippi State University Arkansas State University Appalachian State University Tau Upsilon Phi Chi Psi Omega Alpha Alpha Alpha Beta Alpha Gamma Alpha Delta Alpha Epsilon Alpha Zeta Alpha Eta Alpha Theta Alpha Iota Alpha Kappa Alpha Lambda Alpha Mu Alpha Nu Alpha Xi Alpha Omicron Alpha Pi Alpha Rho Alpha Sigma Alpha Tau Alpha Upsilon Alpha Phi Alpha Chi Alpha Psi Alpha Omega Beta Alpha Beta Beta Beta Gamma Beta Delta Beta Epsilon Beta Zeta Beta Eta Howard University Ferris State College Ball State University Drake University Eastern Kentucky University Middle Tennessee State University Olivet College Pennsylvania State University University of Pennsylvania La Salle University Indiana State University Memphis State University California State University-Sacramento St. Cloud State University College of Insurance Illinois State University Southwest Missouri State University Virginia Commonwealth University Ohio University Morgan State University of Hartford Baylor University Fanshawe College University of Louisiana-Monroe University of North Carolina at Charlotte University of Houston Old Dominion University Bradley University University of Central Arkansas St. Joseph’s University University of Iowa New Mexico State University California State University-Fullerton Utica College University of Central Oklahoma University of North Texas Northern Michigan University Sigma Temple University -5- Date Chartered 04/16/66 11/10/67 03/11/69 10/21/70 03/03/72 02/24/73 02/21/75 10/04/75 10/19/75 10/29/75 10/16/76 10/16/76 05/07/77 02/12/78 04/03/78 04/14/78 04/25/79 11/ 21/ 80 02/04/81 04/29/81 04/17/82 05/01/82 04/19/83 03/29/84 09/23/86 02/15/89 02/15/89 03/15/89 02/12/90 02/01/91 04/26/91 05/11/91 11/21/91 11/21/91 09/30/93 04/21/94 05/04/96 05/07/98 02/05/99 02/23/01 10/04/01 11/09/01 02/27/03 04/11/03 04/15/03 10/02/04 10/08/05 06/09/06 04/27/07 11/28/07 02/08/08 11/13/08 11/22/08 02/18/12 04/22/13 FALL 2015 MEMBERSHIP HANDBOOK CHAPTER ROLL (CONTINUED) Chapter Beta Theta Beta Iota Beta Kappa Beta Lambda Beta Mu Beta Nu Beta Xi Beta Omicron School East Carolina University Troy University University of Houston - Downtown Butler University University of Colorado - Denver Kent State University St. Mary’s University Columbia University -6- Date Chartered 10/03/13 11/01/13 3/21/14 4/15/14 4/26/14 11/7/14 11/10/14 11/20/14 FALL 2015 MEMBERSHIP HANDBOOK GAMMA IOTA SIGMA SIGMA CHAPTER BACKGROUND AND HISTORY “A Tradition of Excellence” Chartered on November 21, 1980, the award winning Sigma Chapter at Temple University has a proud tradition enhancing the professionalism of students in the Risk Management, Healthcare Risk Management and Actuarial Science programs. Brave Hearts for Strong Minds raises money for children who have lost an income earning parent and donate to their education funds. Inspired by the late Tom Reilly, we provide families with the support they need to bear the financial aspect of education. Children who have lost a parent face immense and lasting emotional and social hurdles. One of the key struggles for families that have lost a loved one is the ability to provide for the children’s education. Reflecting on Tom’s compassion and friendship, our organization came up with a way to provide opportunities for children in need. Our model is a pay-it-forward network, asking that those families who receive these opportunities help to create opportunities for future recipient families. They do so by working with us to help organize and run future events which benefit other families who have experienced similar loss in their life. Last academic year, Sigma Chapter pledged to raise $10,000 for Brave Hearts for Strong Minds, and exceeded our goal by raising $11,200. Due to the incredible impact we had on these children, the Sigma Chapter has decided to partner with Brave Hearts for Strong Minds again this year. However, this year’s charity goal for Brave Hearts for Strong Minds has been raised to $15,000. -53- FALL 2015 MEMBERSHIP HANDBOOK GAMMA IOTA SIGMA SOCIAL ACTIVITIES AND EVENTS -- FALL 2015 MEMBERSHIP HANDBOOK SOCIAL ACTIVITIES As a full time student, it can be quite difficult to balance your classes, work, and a personal life all at once.
