Headlines is a publication of Dance

internationally renowned companies to
individual dance artists and production
professionals.
DanceWeekend’16—don’t miss a minute!
New in January 2016—urban dance battles and talk backs in the upper lobby with artists
including commissioned choreographers Louis Labérge Cŏte and Jacob Niedzwiecki. PLUS
a totally unique version of Swan Lake by the incomparable Linnea Swan for Corpus. Be

25 dance companies will showcase their work over three days and the result will be
nothing short of amazing!
Come and meet our new board members and enjoy a weekend when Ontario’s artists
truly shine on stage!
For schedules, please check the Dance Ontario website at www.danceontario.ca—we
now have a special section profiling each of the participating companies.

annual award recognizes exceptional
young dancers ages 19 & under who are
not only pursuing excellence in their craft
but go above and beyond making a difference in the lives of others and contributing to the dance community as a whole.
New Dancer Transition Resource
Centre (DTRC) initiative—LEAP- Leading
Edge After Performance is a pioneering,
national partnership between DTRC and
Canadian Sport Institute Ontario (CSIO).
LEAP brings together the dance and sport
communities in a collaborative venture to
explore career and life transition issues
specific to their unique populations - high
performance athletes and professional
dancers. The initiative will enable the sectors to share knowledge, best practices
aand networks and provide a platform or
dialogue and future strategic partnerships.
KasheDance and COBA have entered
RE:SOUND—it would appear that although Re:Sound (formally Neighbouring
Rights) had previously targeted studios at
an affordable rate of approx. $20 annually, this has now changed to a formula of
0.34c per class per year for studios under
Tariff 6.A resulting in a significant increase. We understand that RE:SOUND
had consultations with the Fitness sector
but did not approach the CDTA. Dance
Ontario is currently in early discussions
with provincial teachers’ and service organizations across the country.
For presenters and venues the rate under
Tariff 5.A is 0.9% of fees paid (for example, $450 for total fees of $50,000). We
understand that CAPACOA is currently
negotiating with RE:SOUND on behalf of
its members.
into a collaboration . For COBA this means
further solidifying the organization’s sustainability; for KasheDance, it means
providing aide in its growth.
Congratulations to Hanna Kiel on her
full length presentation of Armband at the
Fleck Dance Theatre, Toronto. Hanna was
commissioned by Dance Ontario to create
the original 15 minutes of the work.
And to Ryerson Dances for their performance of James Kudelka’s totally
mesmerizing new work!
Brampton Dance Studio Jade's Hip Hop
Academy (JHHA pronounced "Jaw") performsed on The Ellen DeGeneres
Show! JHHA Owner & Artistic Director
Jade Jager Clark and eight dancers
ages 8-17 from Jade's Hip Hop
Academy were flown out by Ellen
to perform on her Dec. 4th show
after producers saw their Dance
Video to Missy Elliott's WTF .
Many congratulations!

ince through a robust community-driven
training/internship strategy.
4. Invest in adequate and affordable facilities for artists and arts organizations.
Dance Ontario is active in the 22-member
strong PASO-OPSA coalition and Executive
Director Rosslyn Jacob Edwards currently
serves as Co-Chair.
PASO-OPSA strives to strengthen the environment for the individuals and institutions that create and disseminate the arts
in this province and for public access to
the arts. Their collective memberships are
made up of individual artists as well as
the performance and exhibition organizations that create and support artistic expression.
Informed by their observations as Executive Directors of Arts Service Organizations, the coalition actively advocates for
changes in legislation that will benefit the
cultural sector’s organizations, artists,
performers, as well as for making the arts
more accessible for all Ontarians.
PASO –OPSA calls on the provincial government to:
1. Confirm its commitment to the sector
by increasing investment in the arts
through the Ministry of Tourism, Culture
& Sport and key agencies such as the Ontario Arts Council and the Ontario Trillium
Foundation.
2. Strengthen cultural policy framework in
Ontario through a consultative process in
order to better address the challenges of
artistic creation.
3. Support youth employment in the prov-

PASO-OPSA works with the Ontario Arts
Council on the organization of Arts Day @
Queens Park and Arts Day in the Ridings
and is currently interested in a closer relationship with the Ontario Trillium Foundation. Changes in granting applications and
direction regarding the late summer OTF
deadlines have proven problematic for
many applicants and PASO-OPSA is looking to assist the foundation in providing
clarity.
