Principal Message
I would like to take this opportunity to extend my deep appreciation to each and every one of you, for your
contributions in helping to make this school year a successful one. Our motto, “Together We Aim Higher”
continues to inspire and motivate our improvement efforts to reach our goals. There have been many
accomplishments throughout this year. To name just a few, our entire campus has been repainted with mounted
Core Value signs, Grade 6 mural down in the lower parking lot, new playground equipment, mural in Hale
Kukui, sustainable gardens, opera, intramurals, and the list goes on.
To the graduating sixth graders, I am very proud of you and know that all of you will fulfill and chase your
dreams. Go for it! As you leave Waikele Elementary School, I hope that you will always remember the years
you spent here. Waikele Pride! I wish you the best of luck and success as you move on to another phase in
your life. Congratulations!
A special Mahalo to our PTSO for their unwavering support for our students and school. To our PCNC and
SCC for their support providing meaningful family participation activities and building great community
partnerships. We will continue to work together with our community partners and partnerships to provide many

Please notify the Front Office as soon as possible, if your child
will not be returning to Waikele Elementary for the school
year 2015-2016, and/or if your child will be leaving prior to
June 03, 2015.
Even if there is a slight possibility that you may be moving,
please give us a call.

Kindergarten registration begins on FEB 2, 2015.
Registration packets will be available in the Front Office
during regular business hours.

(1) Parent/guardian must reside within the Waikele School
District and
(2) Your child must be 5 years old by July 31, 2015.

On April 7, 2015, the Board of Education approved a change
in school meal prices in accordance with a 2009 state law
requiring the Hawaii State Department of Education to charge
at least half the cost of preparing the meals.
The new prices shown below will take effect on Wednesday,
July 1, 2015:

When signing your child(ren) out early from school:
a. Come to the front office to sign your child out (PLEASE
BRING A PICTURE ID)
b. Then go to the class to pick up your child(ren)
TRANSPORTATION FOR SY 2015-2016
Bus drivers will distribute a 2015-2016 Bus Handbook to each
rider as they board the bus in the afternoon on or about May 1,
2015. Students are instructed to return the completed bus
application to the bus driver or the school office as soon as
possible to be processed.

McKinney-Vento Homeless Act
Students eligible for McKinney-Vento Homeless Act services
between October 1, 2005 and June 26, 2008 have the right to request
to be transferred to a school previously attended during that period of
time, if feasible.

Request for Administration/Storage of Medication in School
No medication will be stored in the Health Room or administered by the
authorized Public Health Nursing Branch and/or DOE personnel without the
completion of form PHN/SHS36, Rev. 5/12, and other appropriate forms
which can be obtained by the School Health Aide. A consultation will be
provided by our Public Health Nurse. When these steps are complete, the
Principal will have final approval.
Medication must be in a container/vial dispensed by the Pharmacist with
instructions "FOR SCHOOL USE" with the name of the student, name of the
medication, dosage, strength, time of administration, and name of prescribing
physician.
This form is good for the current school year and needs to be renewed yearly.
Parent/legal guardian is responsible to obtain the form for the following
school year.

garment rack and table in the cafeteria before the

Mahalo nui loa to all our Waikele Ohana and
friends who ordered from Papa John’s Pizza this
past school year. With your support, Waikele
Elementary has raised over $5,300!
A group in the 3rd grade Enrichment class planned
and executed a T-Shirt Donation Drive for the
St. Jude Catholic Church Homeless Program.
For their Problem/Project Based Learning Project,
this group focused on the topic ‘Poverty’, and one
of the things that their group decided to do was to
reach out to the community and research what was
needed the most. It turned out that t-shirts were
needed, and they found out that St. Jude Catholic
Church has a homeless program. They developed
a plan, and decided to run a T-shirt Drive to collect
donations. It was a success, and many t-shirts were
donated. Thank you very much for all of those who
donated to this worthy cause.

Aloha,
The T-shirt Drive was a success. We would just like
to thank you for all your donations that we received
on both days of our T-shirt Drive and during the
week. The donations were organized and sent to the
Saint Jude’s Church Homeless Program. The
group really appreciated all of your donations. We
learned a lot from this project and hope to do it
again in the future.

Please continue to save the Box Tops For
Education labels that may be on your cereal boxes,
food packages, toilet/paper towel outer wraps, etc.
When your child returns to school, please turn it in
to the PCNC office or your child’s teacher. Please
write your child’s name/teacher on the envelope or
bag and address it to PCNC. If your child turns in
more than 15 labels, they will get a pencil!
Thank you for your continued support throughout
last school year for the Parent Community
Networking Center (PCNC). We made over
$1,000 which helped pay for all PCNC community
activity/program expenses.

PCNC Family CPR/AED Night

On May 7, Pamela Foster/Founder of Hawaii
Heart Foundation and President of AED
Institute of America, Inc., along with CPR/AED
Certified Instructor Volunteers, and 2 of our
Waikele HERO students Makamae Kahalewai
and Tyson Keaunui, came to Waikele Elementary
and educated our families on how to perform Hands
Only Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and
how to use an Automated External Defibrillator
(AED). Parents/guardians were taught to do handson CPR by their own child(ren) who learned first
from the volunteers.
Center! With your donations, we were able to make
25 Fun in Sun bags for the families. Each bag was
filled with canned goods, toys, and beach
gear. Your donations will help the families at the
center have an enjoyable summer! Thank you again
for your generosity and for taking care of the
families at the center.

Everyone left with the confidence of knowing what
to do to save a life, if ever a time would come. And

They were also shown a video called, “CPR
Heroes” which was created and directed by our
very own Waikele HERO (Help Everyone Rescue
Others) students, under the direction of Ms. Nuha,
and partnered and produced with Hawaii Heart

Thank you also to Mike Donley/Papa John’s
Hawaii and Papa John’s Waipahu for the huge
discounted price on the pizzas and also the donation
of an extra variety of 10 more pizzas! Everyone
had more than enough to eat and even got to take
some home. Thank you also to Mr. Oshio and Mr.
Aki for your help and support that night.
Aloha Waikele Families,
I can’t believe how fast this school year went by! I
guess it is true when they say time flies when you
are having fun! J This school year had been an
amazing experience, and I am extremely grateful for
our Waikele `Ohana.
Congratulations to our 6th grade students as they
celebrate and continue their educational journey. I
know they will have a lot of wonderful memories to
take with them to the Intermediate school, and they
will all be truly missed.
At the beginning of the school year, Mr. Oshio had
shared with me that Waikele Elementary was a
special place. This school year was amazing with
many events and programs such as Extravaganza,
Learning Celebrations, Waikele Broadcasting
Warriors, Movie Nights, Art Academy and the First
Grade Opera performance. Looking back at all the
amazing opportunities, it is clear on why Waikele is
a very special school.
Staff Appreciation Luncheon
On May 8, our entire faculty was invited to a Salad
& Dessert Buffet Luncheon in our Faculty
Lounge. This has been an annual Staff Appreciation
celebration with the help of our parent volunteers,
PCNC facilitator, and PTSO. Special thank you to
Yuri Keaunui, Riza Balisacan, Marie Kawabata,
Mary Higa, Shannon Rose-Quodala, and Shazlie
Ribucan for helping to cut, wash, clean, prepare,
set up and clean up with this festivity for our
wonderful staff. In addition to these awesome
volunteers who also donated desserts, thank you
also to Joni Maluo, Eunice Fukunaga, Colleen
Pang-Wong and Susan Yonemura who also
donated desserts and goodies for our staff. YUM!!
Dear Waikele Students and Families,
Thank you so much for your generous donations for
the families at the Lighthouse Outreach
This school year, I had the opportunity to work with
all of the amazing teachers, staff, families and
students here at Waikele, and it is all of you who
make this place truly special. Our students are so
lucky to have such wonderful support from great
families, teachers and staff. I am extremely grateful
for the year spent as a part of this wonderful
community. Thank you!
