January-February - Civil Service Club
fusi n civil service club | January-February 2012 MICA (P) 139/12/2010 one membership, three distinct experiences Inside this issue! Healthy Fun @ SPF Family 2011 | Children’s Adventure Camp 2011 | Lunar New Year Bazaar @ Civil Service Club fusi n civil service club From the GM’s Desk Charlie Ng General Manager, CSC LET’S welcome 2012, a new year with new opportunities and experiences. 2011 had been a very busy year for the Club. Besides the infrastructure and facilities upgrades, the Club organised many new social and sporting activities. These spanned diverse interests, ranging from cultural activities, such as Deeparaya Bazaar and the Heritage Race, to sports activities, such as the Bedok Reservoir Run and the recently concluded Public Service Family Sports Carnival held at Marina Barrage and Gardens by the Bay (East). Other major events organised included COMIFEST, Public Service Singing Star Competition, Luxury Handbags and Accessories Sale, and community service tours to neighbouring countries. These were very well supported by our members, public officers and their families. As such, the Club will add these as regular events to our Club’s Social Activity Calendar in 2012. The Club also sought new partners to add value to the range of discounts that our members already enjoyed. Besides the Civil Service Club-Passion Card, the Club has tied-up with RWS to enjoy special discounts to a wide range of activities at Universal Studios and the recently opened Johor Premium Outlet. We have also partnered STAR Automobile which enables our members to enjoy special discounts for car servicing and 24-hour free towing services. We had a record turnout of 56 tables. Everyone had a good time feasting on the sumptuous dinner, enjoying the retro music from the live band, being entertained by the magic show and trying their luck at the lucky draw. The winners of the lucky draw went home with shopping vouchers and electrical appliances. Every diner was also presented with a special door gift to commemorate the 40th Anniversary of the Club. The highlight for 2011 will indeed be the Annual Year-end Dinner and Dance on 31 December 2011. We have lined up a variety of entertaining programmes, many lucky draw prizes, and performances by the talented finalists of the Public Service Singing Star Competition. This will be a chance to bond as a big family as we bid a fond farewell to 2011 and welcome 2012. We hope our members, public officers and their guests will enjoy the programmes. To welcome the Year of the Dragon, the Club will be organising a Lunar New Year Bazaar at Tessensohn Clubhouse on 14 January 2012. Shoppers will be able to shop in air- conditioned comfort over 2 floors of shopping space. We have also upgraded our fruit machines at both Tessensohn and Bukit Batok Clubhouse to international specification machines for players to have a better playing experience. The operating system will go coin-less and be fully integrated by end February 2012. The Club’s improvement also extends to Changi Clubhouse which will be closed temporarily for a major renovation and upgrading from May 2012. The project will take about 18 months to complete, ie till November 2013. Once completed, it will feature chalets, alfresco dining with a live music, a seafood restaurant, a bowling centre, karaoke rooms, covered badminton courts and roof-top tennis courts. An artist’s impression of the revitalised Changi Clubhouse is on the next page to pique your interest. Once the renovation is completed, you can truly have a membership card with 3 clubhouses and 3 distinctive experiences. So for those born in the year of the Dragon, it is advisable to avoid making major changes to your current situation as this will bring tremendous pressure and challenges. Born in the Year of the Snake (1929, 1941, 1953, 1965, 1977, 1989, 2001) THERE are more negative than positive stars in your palace this year. Fortunately, some of the ill effects are being negated by the presence of Tai Yang, Tian Xi and Yu Tang stars. It is advisable that you continue to stay focus and proceed cautiously to ensure a smooth sailing year ahead. Born in the Year of the Horse (1918, 1930, 1942, 1954, 1966, 1978, 1990, 2002) THOSE born in the year of the Horse are blessed with a string of positive stars – Tian Je, Jie Shen, Tang Fu and Ba Zuo in 2012, representing opportunities for gains and success. These auspicious stars are also helpful in negating the ill effects of other negative stars that are present in the palace. Born in the Year of the Goat (1919, 1931, 1943, 1955, 1967, 1979, 1991, 2003) THERE are more inauspicious than auspicious stars residing in the palace of those born in the year of the Goat. However, Tai Yin and Guo Yin stars are your saviours in times of difficulties. You can approach your ladies’ friends for assistance as they are your noblemen for the year. Meanwhile, lie low and keep yourself safe and healthy by taking extra precautions in whatever you do. Born in the Year of the Monkey (1920, 1932, 1944, 1956, 1968, 1980, 1992, 2004) Those born in the year of Monkey San Tai bring support from your management and noblemen in your career. There are a few reasons why the monkey may be unhappy this year. There can be some disputes and problems arising from betrayals and disappointments. Financially, there are possibilities of unexpected loss of wealth. Born in the Year of the Rooster (1921, 1933, 1945, 1957, 1969, 1981, 1993, 2005) With Yue De, Sui He, Di Jie and Tian Chu residing in the palace of the Rooster, those born in the year of the Rooster can look forward to a better year ahead. These auspicious stars will bring success in your achievements and accomplishments. Should you face any challenges or unresolved matters, it will be taken care of this year with the help of these noble stars. Born in the Year of the Dog (1922, 1934, 1946, 1958, 1970, 1982, 1994, 2006) Without any auspicious stars and having a string of inauspicious stars residing in the palace, those born in the year of the Dog are also in conflict with the Grand Duke of Jupiter in the year 2012. This denotes pressure and challenges in the career front. Avoid making any major decisions or movements in both your career and personal life. This is a year which you should learn to lie low on your own opinions and learn to make use of others’ ideas for success. Born in the Year of the Pig (1923, 1935, 1947, 1959, 1971, 1983, 1995, 2007) There is a host of auspicious stars residing in the palace for those born in the year of the Pig. Zi Wei, Lu Xun and Long De bring you abundance of prosperity and happiness in the year of the Dragon. Those born in the year of the Pig will be busy and working very hard which will prove to be a rewarding year both in your career and personal life. Looks like amidst the depressing climate in the economy, you are the only one beaming with joy and prosperity! Any reason that can be a cause of unhappiness or setback would be your health. Pay extra attention to your health and mental stress as this can be the hindrance to your endeavors. Born in the Year of the Rat (1924, 1936, 1948, 1960, 1972, 1984, 1996, 2008) THIS year’s luck would not be good for those born in the year of the Rat as the presence of more inauspicious stars overshadow the two auspicious stars – Jiang Xing and Sui Dian. It would be best to focus your attention on your career and stay away from any disputes or arguments which could lead to financial losses. Born in the Year of the Ox (1925, 1937, 1949, 1961, 1973, 1985, 1997, 2009) ALTHOUGH there are more inauspicious stars in your palace this year, fortunately, the ill effects have been mitigated by the presence of the heavenly star Tian De, Fu Xing and Ban An. However one still needs to stay vigilant as there might be hidden misfortunes due to the presence of Yin Sha. Born in the Year of the Tiger (1926, 1938, 1950, 1962, 1974, 1986, 1998) THIS would not be a good year for those born in the year of the Tiger as there are three negative stars in your palace which indicate crying events due to the loss of loved ones. However, there are two positive stars which relate to travelling and study. Make good use of this opportunity to gain some knowledge by attending seminars or courses. Movement and travelling can help ease the negative effects from the inauspicious stars. Born in the Year of the Rabbit (1927, 1939, 1951, 1963, 1975, 1987, 1999) Those born in the year of the Rabbit are fortunate to have the Nobleman residing in their palace this year which denotes a helping hand in times of needs. Pay extra attention to health related matters as therein also lay the sickness star. The 12-zodiac animal signs luck prediction is based on the analysis of the Auspicious stars and Negative stars residing in each of their respective palace. As the earth orbits around the sun, the planetary stars that reside in each of the 12 palaces influence the events and well-being of the individuals. This form of yearly prediction can only account for 25% of the person’s BaZi as it only tells the condition of the year pillar. It is important that readers have sound knowledge of their own BaZi structure and luck cycles before adding this information for comparison. This will allow one to conclude the intensity of how the stars impact a person’s luck for this year. The above is an extract from Forecast 2012 book by Helen Ong. The book will be available in all major bookstores at $18 per copy. Children’s Adventure Camp! THE CSC 3-Day Adventure Camp @ CSC for Kids began on 29 Nov 2011. It was an enriching experience for the 24 children involved as they learned basic outdoor skills, peer communication and life/survival skills, some for the first time! The children visited various venues like the Tree Top Adventure, Marina Barrage and MacRitchie Reservoir where they took part in activities like conquering the obstacle course, rock climbing, outdoor cooking and kayaking. The children also enjoyed an educational experience as they undertook leadership roles and learned to work as a team over the 3 days. The most interesting part of the camp was when they went grocery shopping at NTUC City Square Mall for cooking ingredients and subsequently conjured a dish with the help of mess tins and solid fuel. Every child received a t-shirt and a memento photo as keepsakes. The camp was indeed a success and a memorable experience for all! H ea 1 lthy F 1 0 2 un @ SPF Family Day Magician Kyle’s comedy skit Commissioner of Police Mr Ng (right) shares a light moment Archery session at the tennis court Cooking demo THE Singapore Police Force (SPF) Family Day was held on a sunny Saturday, on 19 Nov 2011, at Club CSC @ Bukit Batok. For once, our men and women in blue turned up in casual clothes, with their families along for a memorable day of familybonding activities and games. Jigsaw puzzle competition The free popcorn was a hit! Family mini-bowling competition The opening ceremony was held at the Ballroom. On stage, the opening act by magician Kyle, with his amazing magic tricks, fire-swallowing antics and comedy skits, enthralled both children and adults in the audience. The event was graced by Commissioner of Police, Mr Ng Joo Hee, who presented the SPF Health Awards – which recognised units in the SPF maintaining high health standards – to all units which excelled in this area. Mr Ng then launched the Total Wellness Campaign with a burst of the confetti cannon and the event officially kicked off. The participants were treated to a series of programmes such as a family mini-bowling competition, an archery session, a healthy cooking demonstration, a jigsaw puzzle contest, health screening and product booths, and more. Facilities like the swimming pool and bowling were also “free and easy” for participants and their families to use for the day. Sing ing Star Semis: Pop Idol semi-finalists Evergreen semi-finalists THE sound of music was sweet indeed, especially from the singing voices of the talented semi-finalists in the CSC Singing Star competition. The audience, made up of family and friends, was treated to heartfelt covers of movie classics such as “新不 了情” and Sedaka Neil’s “You mean everything to me”. The twenty contestants also displayed their sartorial creativity and flair – decked up in smart suits, glittery Michael Jackson-inspired gloves, elegant gowns and high boots. The three judges (from left): Mr Mohammed Khairul Bin Rosli, Ms Lily Kew, Ms Jeslyn Chan From an initial 60-strong group in the preliminary rounds to the 40 left standing in the quarter-finals, the semis saw the number whittled down to 20 – ten each from the Pop Idol (for under 40s) and Evergreen (for above 40s) categories. It was held on Sunday, 27 Nov 2011, at the Auditorium at CSC @ Tessensohn. The judges who kindly agreed to take on the task of choosing the finalists are: Jeslyn Chan, who has participated in various singing events and is an artiste with Wild Music; Mohd Khairul Rosli, a vocalist, rhythm guitarist and singer-songwriter with vast teaching experience; and Lily Kew, founder and co-owner of Glow Aesthetics. The happy go lucky winner Everyone’s at ivil Service th e C rts Carnival 2011! o p S MARINA Barrage was a happening spot on Saturday, 26 Nov 2011. Close to 2,000 Public Officers, their families in tow, descended upon the iconic riverside building for the annual Public Service Sports Carnival. It certainly made for an uplifting, festive atmosphere! The number of activities, games and competitions on offer was overwhelming – there was definitely something for everyone, from toddlers to young teens to grannies! The event kicked off with a mass workout exercise led by an aerobics trio, after which Guest-of-Honour Mr Peter Ong, Head of Civil Service and President, Civil Service Club, flagged off the morning walk to the recently completed Gardens By The Bay (Bay East). For the children, there were giant inflatable slides, a mini rock-climbing wall and a euro bungy to have fun with. Teams from various government agencies took part in the telematch competition and dance/cheer team competitions which drew a large and enraptured audience, while others did not mind getting wet trying out dragon boating and kayaking. Families also had fun quality time together flying kites at the Green Roof on top of Marina Barrage and participating in the foot-bound Amazing Race as well as various game booths where they could win tokens. In conjunction with the event, CSC also organised a car-based Heritage Race with participants looking for clues at the three clubhouses before ending at the Marina Barrage. An exhibition basketball match and “Let’s Play” try out stations by the Singapore Sports Council and interactive exhibition booths by Health Promotion Board also proved to be popular with the participants, as were the free fun packs and lucky draws. They sure look forward to the next edition of the Public Service Sports Carnival in 2012! Sport Liaison Officer Ms Patricia Lim of MEWR, champion of the telematch competition, expressed her team’s “shock and surprise” as they were not expecting to win. She attributed their victory to their ability to work and communicate together well, while at the same time having fun and not putting themselves under too much pressure. A total of 33 teams from 19 government agencies participated in the tournament. MHA convenor Mr Soh Wan Khuan said his teams' win was a "good testimonial to the hard work" of everyone involved. They had started training two months before, and also played in other Men’s Open champion team from MHA. competitions which helped cement their teamwork. He also thanked the coach, Mr Han Lijun, the players' "commitment and sacrifices", as well as understanding and support of the various departments' management in granting them time for training. It was the hotly contested Public Service Dragon Boat Race again; and for the 12th consecutive Champion of the 12–Crew Mixed category. year, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) emerged from the churning waters as overall champions. It triumphed in 3 of the 6 categories: the Open Event (22-crew) and both Men's and Women's Events (12-crew). Team manager, Superintendent of Police Mr Alan Wong, said his team members felt a "sense of euphoria" at maintaining its proud tradition and track record. He credited his "highly driven" and committed team mates who trained intensively and regularly for the competition. The ethos of teamwork and mental toughness, as well as the management and Police Sports Association's strong support, were other key factors for their success. He quoted Helen Keller: "Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much." This is the ethos the MHA team strongly lives by and the early identification of rowers proved to be advantageous as well. Indeed, this championship has unequivocally raised the high spirits of the team, actuating them to conquer greater heights in future. These very fine threads of malt are constantly dipped into a big tub of icing flour, thus giving it the appearance and consistency of a fine white beard that is no different from the beard of the mystical Chinese Dragon.
