The Mission of Dream Foundation is to enhance the quality of life of individuals and their families who are battling catastrophic illness. Dream Foundation helps adults find peace and closure with the realization of a final wish. Charity Navigator awarded Dream Foundation four out of a possible four stars. In earning Charity Navigator’s highest rating, Dream Foundation has demonstrated exceptional financial health, outperforming most of its peers in its efforts to manage and grow its finances in the most fiscally responsible way. www.dreamfoundation.org dreams Wallace is from Lakewood, California. At the age of 70 he suffers with COPD. Wallace was facing a choice between buying his medications and paying his utility bills. Your support allowed him not to have to choose. Your generosity enabled us to bring them to her bedside. 4 www.dreamfoundation.org facts Since it was founded, Dream Foundation has granted over 7,000 wishes. In 2007, we processed 1,156 dream requests. Dream Foundation supports the essential services provided by over 674 hospices in the United States. Dream Foundation’s national network of over 2,000 Dream Hosts, Dream Captains, and volunteers help make each dream a personal experience from our hearts to the heart of the dreamer. The work of Dream Foundation is made possible in part by a grant from the Odyssey VistaCare Hospice Foundation. www.dreamfoundation.org 5 dreams Kevin is from Crowell, Texas. So many of us have been affected by the country’s economic downturn, struggling to cope with losses and hardships. It’s tempting to worry only about our own families this year. But I believe that no one feels the depths of these troubled times more than our dream recipients. The diagnosis of a catastrophic illness has very real economic consequences for the low-income families we serve. They face crippling medical bills, lost wages, rising expenses, and emotional upheaval. These individual realities are compounded by the larger economic realities of shrinking budgets, reduced services, and scaled-back charitable giving. We know this to be true because the number of dream requests has increased as healthcare, hospice, and hospital budgets have diminished. When traditional avenues of support close to them, these families increasingly look to us for hope. In short, the work of Dream Foundation matters more today than ever before. In 2007, we fulfilled 1,156 final dreams—a 25% increase from the previous year—with a budget of $2.4 million. But numbers alone do not tell the whole story. The very nature of incoming requests is changing as well. A full 52% of our dream recipients now make “quality of life” requests. This means they ask only for very basic needs that Medicare or medical insurance will not provide—a gift card to buy food, a mattress, hearing aid, an air-conditioner, and the like. As one of the only providers of end-of-life wishes for adults, Dream Foundation finds itself in a unique position. The Association of Wish Granting Organizations lists 88 entities that serve children. Yet even 14 years into our work, we remain largely alone in addressing the needs of catastrophically ill adults. Yes, we fulfilled 1,156 dreams in 2007. But that was not our only achievement. We also: • received the Best in America Seal from the Independent Charities of America, by meeting high standards of program effectiveness and public accountability. Out of 1,000,000 charities in the U.S., less than 2,000 have been awarded this seal. • delivered over 3,600 bouquets to the seriously ill and elderly through our Flower Empower Program. • distributed boxes of new, age-appropriate toys to more than 400 dream recipients with young children through our volunteer-driven Toy Program. 8 www.dreamfoundation.org In 2008, we continue to add accomplishments. In September, for instance, we hit a new milestone: our 7,000th dream. We’re especially proud of this achievement because we know that each dream touches countless loved ones, friends, and communities as well. For all of 2008, we project completion of 1,700 dreams—on a reduced budget of $2.2 million. This is accomplished at a tremendous cost to the Dream Foundation staff, an exceptional staff, working harder than ever with reduced resources. As you turn the pages of this Annual Report, please recognize the tremendous role that you played in fulfilling these dreams. I am proud of our network of in-kind donors, volunteers, and local businesses whose partnership enriched and enhanced each dream request and helped us to complete another year of dream fulfillment. Now in our 14th year, I believe even more strongly in our mission. Yes, times may be tough. But we have not lost hope; we cannot lose hope because it is the very essence of what we provide to hundreds of families each year. Ultimately, the work of Dream Foundation is all about hope— hope that the physical and emotional suffering of a catastrophically ill adult will be eased by a final wish realized, and hope that a family devastated by illness will be encouraged and uplifted by the kindness of strangers. Our families depend on us, and we depend on you. We need you now more than ever. Thank you for believing in caring for people during their end of life journey, Always from the heart, Thomas Rollerson Founder/President Dream Foundation recently received the Independent Charities of America (ICA) Seal of Excellence. The award goes to members of ICA and Local Independent Charities of America that have, upon rigorous independent review, been able to certify, document, and demonstrate on an annual basis that they meet the highest standards of public accountability, program effectiveness, and cost effectiveness. These standards include those required by the U.S. government for inclusion in the Combined Federal Campaign, probably the most exclusive fund drive in the world. Of the 1,000,000 charities operating in the U.S. today, estimates conclude that fewer than 50,000 or five percent, meet or exceed these standards. Of those, fewer than 2,000 have been awarded this seal. www.dreamfoundation.org 9 from the board president Dear Donors, Since 1994, with the passionate leadership of its founder Thomas Rollerson, a very committed National Board of Directors, Honorary Board of Governors and a totally dedicated staff, the Dream Foundation has maintained an amazing record of accomplishment and growth. In 2007 alone 1,156 adults with a life prognosis of one year or less were provided with help in order to achieve a final request, a wish or a dream. By October 2008, our 7000th dream will have touched and brightened the lives of recipients, their families and friends, and of course, all of those donors, staff, volunteers, board members, and corporate partners who made these dreams a reality. What starts as a small idea, and finds the right ears, creates immeasurable joy late in the dream recipient’s life, and in the process, lasting joy in the lives of those close by. The magnitude of this accomplishment is best put into perspective when you consider that the agency’s program staff numbers just seven, some working on a part-time basis and that Dream Foundation’s clients live in every one of the United States. Perhaps an even greater achievement is that they did it on a budget of $2,400,000 and managed to seek out an almost equal amount in in-kind donations. A dollar, here, buys a lot of heart food. I believe that these accomplishments are based on the board and staff’s unerring dedication to the agency’s unique mission of compassion and service to adults at the end of life’s journey, and to the families who are taking the journey along with them. On behalf of Dream Foundation’s Board and Staff I extend to all of our supporters gratitude for your generosity and belief in our mission and I ask that you continue your support as Dream Foundation approaches its 15th year of service to adults suffering progressive and irreversible illness. Come to one of our events, meet a dream recipient and their families, meet the staff that crafts and delivers the dreams. It will change your life. Jon Bull Chairman of the Board 10 www.dreamfoundation.org from the finanace committee chair Legacy Dream Circle Dream Foundation has recently created a Legacy Dream Circle to recognize those who include Dream Foundation in their estate plans. This can be accomplished through a provision in your will or trust, or a beneficiary designation in an insurance policy, IRA, or other retirement plan. By remembering Dream Foundation in one of these ways, our supporters are helping to endow a future where dreams will continue to come true for those with life-limiting illnesses. The following special friends of Dream Foundation have already helped to secure a “future of dreams” by naming Dream Foundation in their estate plans: Estate of Dr. Richard Cazen Estate of Marilyn Cole-Schatz The Charlotte Doyle Davis Revocable Trust Estate of Tracey Greene Estate of Thomas Rollerson and Michael Erickson Kenny & Elizabeth Slaught We would also like to thank the special donors who have made an outright gift during their lifetime to help in building an Endowment Fund for Dream Foundation. We are most grateful to these visionaries who are helping to sustain our work not just now, but forever. Anonymous Chris and Maryann Edgecomb Marcia Gay Harden If you would like more information on how to remember Dream Foundation in your estate plans or to make an endowment gift now, please contact Amanda Moselle at (310) 444-3070. Dear Donors, What a pleasure it is to be associated with an organization like Dream Foundation. For the past fourteen years it has maintained itself without government funds and solely with the generous support of local and national donors, of understanding corporate partnerships, of foundations that understand its unique mission and from an incredible group of in-kind donors who provided almost $2,000,000 in goods and services in 2007. As a financial professional I am doubly impressed with the fact that this small, but national, agency has never ended a year in deficit mode and accomplishes so much by perseverance, attention to detail, prudent management and immense good will to its clients, their families and to its supporters. Once again Dream Foundation’s most current audit indicates that it spent 86% of income on its Programs, 5% on Administration and 9% on Fundraising. These numbers are considered outstanding by all agencies that rate not-for-profit organizations and has earned Dream Foundation the Independent Charities of America Seal of Excellence. Dream Foundation’s Finance Committee is proud to work with and salutes the hard-working executives and staff of Dream Foundation as they approach their 15th year of service to adults facing the end of life’s journey and to the families who are taking the journey with them. YESDESIGNGROUP In the Media Dream Foundation receives extensive coverage in the media nationwide. National coverage has included Time Magazine, Access Hollywood, Entertainment Tonight, American Idol, CNN, and Montel Williams, as examples. Below is a list of media coverage and a very small sampling of Dream Story headlines over the last year: “She’s going to Disneyland!” Yakima Herald Republic – January 25, 2007 “Booking of Dreams” Ojai Valley News – March 7, 2007 “When Wishes Come True: Dream Foundation grants a terminally ill woman’s wish” Martin County – March 18, 2007 “Foundation Helps Dream Come True for Cancer Patient” Oshkosh Northwestern – April 1, 2007 “You Should Know” Santa Barbara News-Press – April 14, 2007 “Wish Unites TV Host, Woman With MS” The Tampa Tribune – April 17, 2007 “Giving Hope to Patient” Boulder Daily Camera – May 24, 2007 “Dying Man Given Living Memorial” Port Townsend & Jefferson County Leader – May 9, 2007 “At 89, Woman Gets her Wish for New Teeth” Courier-Post – August 14, 2007 “Her Last Wish is to Thank Her Inspiration” Sunday Patriot-News – September 23, 2007 www.dreamfoundation.org 19 Additional Programs Giving Flight to Dreams Dream Foundation relies on donated airline miles to make dreams come true. Many dreams involve travel as dream recipients try to create one final positive experience for their family. Some recipients wish to return home to die, and others are anxious to visit with family members for a final goodbye. Many of these dreams involve young children whose parents desperately need to create positive memories for the family to hold onto after they are gone. Mileage donors may choose a specific dream to support or contribute directly to our airline mile bank. We are grateful to the following airlines that are Partners in Dreams by participating in our mileage program and accepting donations of miles: Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, Continential Airlines, Northwest Airlines, and United Airlines. Please Note: Donated miles are used ONLY for dreams that require travel and are never used for organizational travel. Volunteer Program We could not grant as many dreams without the help of our dedicated volunteers. Dream Foundation relies on a nationwide network of volunteers that enables us to reach out and touch dream recipients all across the United States. Dream Hosts Our Corporate Partners provide Dream Foundation with employee volunteers who help us make dreams come true. Space does not allow us to list the names of all the volunteers that have helped make over 1,156 dreams come true in 2007. We are grateful to each and every one of you! If you wish to volunteer please contact Jackie Waddill at (805) 564-2131 or jackie@dreamfoundation.org 20 www.dreamfoundation.org Additional Programs Toy Program When we discovered that many of our dream recipients have young children we began to think of what it must feel like to be the child of a dying parent. The entire family is focused on the very ill parent and probably has been for months or years. Usually, there is little money available due to medical expenses and inability of the parent to work. The youngsters can only stand by, silently watching, as a parent’s health declines. We decided to do something for those kids—to let them know that they are not forgotten in the midst of the emotional turmoil that is engulfing their family. We send each child a big box of age-appropriate toys. In the bigger picture of what is happening to the family it is a small gesture, but it means a great deal to the children, and their parents. The Toy Program was underwritten by Board Chairman A.J. Rice in 2007. Dream Foundation’s Flower Empower program is special to our hometown, Santa Barbara. Each Saturday, a group of volunteers gather at the local Farmer’s Market and prepare bouquets using flowers donated by local growers. With a list that we provide, they then deliver them to people battling illness or those we simply want to remind that they are not alone, and that their community cares. Included with each bouquet is a package of home made cookies freshly baked by a local family (Roger, Robin, Rachael, Eli, Jake and Benjamin Himovitz) and a card created by local school children. Flower Empower was underwritten by Mel & Angie Farber and Gary Nett in 2007. We are very grateful to the following flower growers who donate their beautiful blooms for this program: Westerlay, Ever-Bloom, Westland Floral Company, Myriad Flowers, B&H Flowers, Inc., Domingo Farms, and Valley Flowers, Inc. www.dreamfoundation.org 21 Hospices Served A Natural Alliance Dream Foundation is proud to help hospices ease the end of life’s journey for their patients. While the dedicated nurses, social workers, volunteers, and administrators of hospices across the country provide end-of-life care and physical comfort, Dream Foundation offers the peace of mind that comes with having a final wish realized. By working together, we provide both physical and emotional support for adults with life-limiting conditions. We admire and are respectful of the work of these hospices and, from their letters, we know that they are appreciative of the services we provide. And from their letters we know that they are grateful for the service that we provide. We are proud to have granted, in 2007, 256 final requests to Odyssey HealthCare patients in 23 of the United States. We are grateful to Odyssey HealthCare for its support and belief in what we do and to the many Odyssey HealthCare volunteers that have helped us make dreams come true in 2007. It is the first piece of brand new furniture that she has ever owned, so you have given her a great treasure! You all do such a wonderful job of allowing people some normalcy in their lives. Thank you so much for allowing us the opportunity to participate in the dream. What a special day it was! – Faye Cormier, LBSW, Hospice Austin On behalf of Heartland Hospice, thank you for helping Leon get to Nebraska to see his father whom he had not seen in 20 years. At the age of 62 she is losing her battle with kidney cancer. Her new stackable washer and dryer make her smile. Now she does not have to travel from her home to do laundry. Ronald is from New York City. At the age of 70, he is losing his battle with prostate cancer. Ronald was a dancer and actor, but has been unable to leave his home in two years. Through your generosity and kindness, a power chair was provided for Ronald. He is now out in the world, savoring each moment. “Thank you all for making such a difference in my life. I am filled with joy.” 24 www.dreamfoundation.org dreams William 98, of Indianapolis, IN spends most of his days in a reclining chair, reading, watching TV and enjoying the company of his wife. He can no longer get up from the chair without assistance and his wife is too frail to help. We provided William with a lift chair and he is now able rise on his own. Monica is from Fullerton, California. At age 40 she battles breast cancer.
