Travel by zodiac to captivating wildlife excursions on the Orinoco River and
its tributaries.
Visit the rural Venezuelan village of Curiapo, inhabited by the Warao people.
Traveling over 1,300 miles through Colombia and Venezuela, the Orinoco
River is one of the longest rivers in South America. Its mouth, at the
Atlantic Ocean, was sighted by Christopher Columbus in 1498. The source
of the river – near the Brazilian border – wasn’t reached by non-indigenous
people until 1951. Today, the Orinoco River is home to a stunning array of
flora and fauna and a diverse population of native cultures and modern
South Americans. Equipped with our own fleet of Zodiacs and a seasoned
expedition team, we’ll explore this unique ecosystem and learn about the
rare species of fish, mammals, birds and reptiles that call the Orinoco
River home.
Aruba
Swim, snorkel, and explore the natural wonders of the rainforest on the
beautiful island of Tobago.
Explore La Restinga National Park on Isla Margarita or choose to go
flightseeing over Venezuela’s legendary Angel Falls.
Marvel at the wildlife and enjoy the pure white beaches of Venezuela’s
uninhabited Isla Blanquilla.
On Bonaire, see the original Spanish settlement, the flamingos of Grottomeer
saltpans, and sweeping views from Seroelargu.
Enjoy an architectural tour of historic Willemstad, Curaçao, a UNESCO World
Heritage Site.
Spend a day delving into the history of pretty Santa Marta, Colombia’s first
Spanish settlement, and home to the indigenous Kogi population. You may
choose to visit a coffee plantation or explore Tayrona National Park.

The Orinoco River is one of the longest rivers in South America. Along with its many
tributaries, it is the major transportation system for eastern and interior Venezuela.
Flowing from the mountains on the border with Brazil, the river broadens onto a
200-mile-wide delta, called the Delta Amacuro, prior to meeting with the Atlantic
Ocean. Today, we will cruise along the river in search of wildlife such as sloths, giant
otters, river dolphins, colorful toucans, and macaws. This evening, we’ll gather for a
festive Welcome Reception, followed by a sumptuous dinner. (B/L/R/D)

YOUR EXPEDITION TEAM
DENNIS WILLE
Dennis became enamored of wildlife as a
youngster in his native Costa Rica. He became
a tour guide more than twenty years ago and
since 1999, has been working as a naturalist
onboard expedition ships. He even has a
passion for bird sounds and has a collection
of them — recently he worked on the creation
of a DVD that mixes the piano with the sounds
of the birds. His experience and knowledge
has taken him to lead people in other
countries in Central America, the Caribbean,
South America, Europe, Africa, New Zealand,
Australia, Russia, Alaska, the Arctic, and
the Antarctic.

over 3,000 scuba dives, Karen has had close
encounters with sea creatures large and small,
from the most docile to the most dangerous,
including humpback whales, bottlenose

Day 5
O RI NOCO RIVER, CURIAPO , VE NE ZU E LA
C H A R LO T T E VI L LE , T O B A G O
This morning, we’ll board the Zodiacs for a visit to the village of Curiapo, home
to a group of Warao (people of canoes), an indigenous population whose remote
location largely protected them from early European colonization. There are thought
to be as many as 20,000 Warao in Venezuela’s Orinoco Delta. (B/L/D)
This morning, we’ll go ashore to snorkel, swim, and explore this beautiful island. From
the first European explorers to today, Tobago has changed hands over 22 times. It
has been occupied by the English, Dutch, French, Spanish, Latvian Courlanders, and
a host of pirates and buccaneers. In 1889, Tobago was made aware of Trinidad,
which it remained until 1962 when Trinidad & Tobago became an independent
commonwealth, and then a republic in 1976. While Trinidad is the bustling commercial
center of the republic, Tobago is known for its natural environment and a slower
pace of life. It boasts the oldest protected rainforest in the western hemisphere,
beautiful beaches and waterfalls, and a colorful history. Join the Expedition team and
explore the enchanting surroundings of Charlotteville, or take one of our optional
excursions and go further afield: visit Argyle Waterfalls or the ornithologist’s choice,
Little Tobago, a wildlife sanctuary and the breeding site for seabirds such as Red Bill
Tropic Bird, Red Footed Booby and Brown Booby. (B/L/D)
Day 4
ORINOCO DELTA, VE NE ZU E LA
The Orinoco’s ecosystem ranges from more than a thousand fish species, to pink
and grey dolphins, giant river otter, manatees, river turtles, sloths and monkeys,
the Orinoco crocodile (one of the rarest reptiles in the world), and a wide variety of
birdlife, including Macaws, toucans, parrots, and Chenachena. (B/L/D)

Day 6
CRUISING the CARIB BE AN S E A
The Caribbean Sea covers an area from Mexico to South America, but only two
percent of its islands are inhabited. The Caribbean is home to as many as 450 species
of fish, including the bull shark, tiger shark, silky shark, Caribbean reef shark, flying
fish, giant oceanic manta ray, angel fish, spotfin butterflyfish, parrotfish, Atlantic
goliath grouper, tarpon, and moray eels. (B/L/D)
Day 7
EL G UAM ACHE, IS LA MARGAR ITA, VE NE ZU E LA
Located about 25 miles from the mainland, Venezuela’s mountainous Margarita
Island offers wide white beaches and access to windsurfing, golf, and scuba diving.
Isla Margarita is actually two islands connected in the middle by a mangrove-filled
lagoon called La Restinga National Park. Today we’ll explore the park or, if you
choose, you can take the optional full-day excursion: a flightseeing tour to Canaima
over Angel Falls. (B/L/D)
VENEZUELA CACTUS
Day 8
I SLA B LANQUILLA, VE NE ZU E LA
This morning, we’ll go ashore on this stunning uninhabited island. Named for
its pristine white sand beaches, the island’s flora and fauna include iguanas, wild
donkeys, and numerous varieties of cacti. (B/L/D)

FLAMINGOS IN BONAIRE
WILLEMSTAD, CURAÇAO
Day 9
K R A LE N D I J K , B O N A I R E
Bonaire was part of the Netherland Antilles until 2010 and the Dutch influence
remains very strong. It was here that the Dutch West India company harvested salt,
which attracted scores of pink flamingos. This afternoon’s excursion will take us to
the Grottomeer saltpans to see the flamingos, and Rincon, the original Spanish
settlement. Finally, we’ll visit Seru Largu, the highest point on the island, to take in
the sweeping panoramic views. (B/L/D)
Day 10
W I LL E M ST A D , C U R A Ç A O
Willemstad was established as a trading settlement by the people of the
Netherlands. Here, the architecture reflects the styles from the Netherlands as well
as the Spanish and Portuguese Colonial towns with whom Willemstad engaged in
trade. Today, we’ll go ashore for a walking tour to see the colorful architecture of
historic Willemstad, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. (B/L/D)
Day 11
C R U I SI N G t he C A R I B B E A N SE A
As we cruise the Caribbean Sea, our onboard specialists will offer enriching
presentations featuring information on our upcoming stop to Santa Marta as well as
the colorful history of Cartagena, Colombia. (B/L/D)

CITY HALL, SANTA MARTA
BANANA TREE BLOSSOM
Santa Marta, Colombia’s first Spanish settlement, is the capital city of the department
of Magdalena. Founded in 1525 by the Spanish conqueror Rodrigo de Bastidas, it is
the oldest remaining city in Colombia. Today this pretty city is popular for its history,
colonial architecture, beaches, and nature reserves. The nearby Sierra Nevada
Mountains are the highest coastal mountain range in the world, which sweep
down to the sea where you will find the Tayrona National Park. Today you will have
many options to explore the town, the park, meet the indigenous Kogi, believed
to be the direct descendants of the Tayrona, or take a trip to a coffee plantation.
After a stimulating day exploring on shore, we’ll gather for cocktails, followed by a
sumptuous farewell dinner. (B/L/R/D)
Day 13
CA R T A G E N A , C O LO M B I A ( D I SE M B A R K A T I O N )
This morning, we’ll arrive in Cartagena, Colombia. After breakfast, you’ll disembark

Hotel (or similar). After check in, enjoy leisure time, including lunch and dinner on
your own. The following morning, you’ll be greeted by your guide for a half-day
tour of Trinidad. Traveling via air-conditioned motorcoach, you’ll see the Parliament
Building (known as “The Red House”) as well as the Magnificent Seven, a group
of ornate mansions built in the early 1900s. The tour continues with a stop at Lady
Young Lookout for panoramic views of Port of Spain and the Caribbean Sea.
Disembark the MS Laurent and transfer to the Hilton Cartagena Hotel (or similar).
After check in, enjoy leisure time, including lunch and dinner on your own. The
following morning, you’ll be greeted by your guide and board our motorcoach
for a half-day tour of Cartagena. We’ll begin with a drive through the Bocagrande
neighborhood to the Convent of La Popa, built at the beginning of the 17th century
on the hill of the same name. We’ll stop here for a tour of the convent and time to
enjoy the magnificent view of the city and the bay.
Next, we’ll drive to Mount St. Benedicts Monastery, which was founded in 1912
by Brazilian monks and is visible for miles around due to its landmark tower and
distinctive red-roofed buildings. After a tour of the monastery and grounds, we’ll
enjoy a local specialty snack then continue to Fort George. Formerly called La
Vigie, Fort George was part of a complex that began construction in 1804. Once
considered impregnable, it was the major defensive position on the island but
never experienced military action. After a guided tour of the fort, we’ll return to the
hotel. Lunch and dinner are on your own. Port of Spain is known for its mosaic of
culinary styles, served with warmth and hospitality in trendy cafes and fine dining
establishments. You may also wish to join an optional tour. After breakfast the next
morning, make your way to the port for the cruise portion of your vacation.
Next, we’ll continue on to San Felipe’s Fort, built in the 17th century to protect
the city’s inhabitants from invaders. After a tour of this impressive fortress, we will
browse the art galleries and shops of Las Bóvedas and walk through the charming
Old Walled City. Next, arrive at the Plaza of San Pedro Claver, named in honor of
the Catalonian monk who was known as the patron saint of slaves. Finally, we’ll stop
at an artisan popsicle shop and enjoy a cool local specialty before returning to the
hotel. The rest of the day is yours to enjoy as you wish, with lunch and dinner on your
own at any of Cartagena’s inviting restaurants. You may also wish to join an optional
tour. After breakfast the next morning, make your way to the airport for your flight
home.
