Santiago’s historic architecture competes for the skyline alongside modern-day skyscrapers. With over 5 million inhabitants - Santiago contains 40% of Chile’s population - it is the financial, cultural and educational core of the country. Its worth is often dismissed because of problems with smog pollution which lingers above the city (winter only) - mainly due to the fact that the city is crowded with vehicles and surrounded on all sides by mountains. There is a smart and efficient metro system which is a convenient and cheap way of getting around town. The city also has two racecourses, which are normally open at weekends. Hotel Bonaparte Aubrey Hotel W Hotel Santiago Santiago Santiago Although it may not have the striking qualities of Rio de Janeiro or Buenos Aires, it quickly proves itself to be a pleasant and entertaining city. BB This attractive hotel is located approximately a ten minute walk from the heart of Providencia; a smart business and residential district east of the centre of Santiago. Shopping centres, excellent restaurants, cafes and a park can all be found in Providencia. The 65 comfortable rooms are equipped with telephone, cable TV, mini-bar, safe deposit box and tea/coffee making facilities. There is a cosy lounge area, and stylish bar and Bonaparte restaurant which overlook the garden and small swimming pool. The hotel also offers a sauna and small gym and is an ideal option for those who prefer a quieter location. BB The Aubrey is a boutique hotel overlooking the Bellavista area of Santiago. The original house was first built in 1927 for a Chilean politician and businessman. For many years, the dining room, which is now the hotel restaurant, was the scene of legendary lunches over which important matters were discussed which would influence the politics at the time. There are 15 rooms, each individually styled with an artistic touch and furnished with great attention to detail. Quality cotton sheets and feather beds provide a comfortable stay, combined with modern amenities of cable TV, Wi-Fi and Ipod docks in each room. Private facilities, mini bar and safe deposit box. The hotel restaurant, Pasta E Vino, is very well known in Santiago for Italian fusion cuisine and an extensive wine list. 158 Sunvil Traveller BB W is a very stylish and sophisticated addition to the choice of hotels in Santiago. The districts of Bella Vista and Providencia are known for gourmet cuisine and characterful restaurants; some of which, so poplar, they have a waiting list for reservations. Along with a booming cafe culture and newly built hotels, Santiago is certainly overcoming the effects of the earthquake in a positive manner and being reborn as a thriving city for business and leisure visitors alike. Northwest of Santiago, with a scenic coastline and fantastic views of the Pacific Ocean lies Valparaiso, the bohemian neighbour of the capital. Founded in 1542, ‘Valpo’ as the city is known locally, used to be a small port used for trade with Peru. In the early 19th Century, the city grew in wealth and status and fine buildings were erected here; South America’s first Stock Exchange and the offices of ‘El Mercurio’, the oldest newspaper in the Spanish language, still in publication today. way up the steep hills creating zig zag passageways through the colourful architecture. The funicular railways make for a pleasant and scenic journey, as do the trams, which date back to the 1950’s. Three districts of the city, Cerro Concepcion, Verro Alegre and El Puerto were awarded UNESCO World Heritage Site status in June 2003. The port now resembles a medieval harbour rather than a 20th Century commercial port, often called the ‘Pearl of the Pacific’. Just 9km along the coast from Valparaiso lies Vina del Mar, one of South America’s leading seaside resorts. Pleasant beaches, banana palms and shady parks greet the visitor, many of whom are local Chilean people who visit for the weekend. Valparaiso is Chile’s second largest city, built between the waterfront and the hills. The cobbled streets, twist their The Ritz-Carlton Casa Higueras Santiago Valparaiso BB BB Located in the prestigious neighbourhood of El Golf, the Ritz Carlton is one of Santiago’s most exclusive and luxurious hotels. There are 4 restaurants and lounges bars to choose from which offer 365 different Chilean wines, a fitness centre and a top floor swimming pool (pictured) incorporating floor to ceiling windows with dramatic views over the Andes Mountains. There are 4 categories of rooms which offer private facilities, LCD TV, DVD player, safe deposit box, independent climate control, mini bar, hairdryer and WiFi. to be seated indoor or enjoy the open air terrace. The restaurant serves dishes created with locally sourced ingredients with a particular emphasis on seafood. In the garden, surrounded by figs, elms and palm trees, there is a swimming pool, sauna, outdoor Jacuzzi and a spa offering treatments using the best of natural products. Situated in the roof of the hotel, the panoramic terrace is the ideal place to watch the sunset over Valparaiso, and enjoy the slow appearance of hundreds of lights that begin lighting the hills of the city. Dark wood and subtle lighting provide an ideal ambience to relax in the stylish lounge. Driving south of Santiago, you will pass by many of the country’s best vineyards, several of which are open to visitors. En-route you will see several white flags displayed signalling that fresh bread is for sale. Winemaking in Chile dates back over 400 years. Growing conditions are ideal, with a long, dry growing season and well-drained volcanic and fluvial soils. Both connoisseurs and those simply interested in wine will be intrigued with the magnitude and focus of wine in the Central Valley. In 1978, the Spaniard, Miguel Torres, bought Vina Manquehue and incorporated new equipment and techniques. His hard work and persistence paid off when his new Chilean wines won one gold and two silver medals at the 1985 Olympia wine fair in London. Since then, the Chilean wine industry has caught on in a big way, thanks to competitive advantages in labour and land costs. Chilean wine has built a solid reputation for flavour and good value for money. In 2001, Chile exported approximately 4.5% of the worlds wine exportations which shows the scale and importance of this industry. The Maule Valley is Chile’s largest wine producing region, home to 27% of the country’s vineyards. Local vineyards have joined together so as to create a ‘wine route’, similar to that in Colchagua Valley. The Colchagua Valley is a focal point of Central Valley culture and is home to some of the best vineyards and boutique properties in Chile. Seven vineyards in the Colchagua valley have joined forces to offer an interesting and enjoyable tour of the region. Useful Notes Wine Train A new and very different way to visit the Chilean wine growing district is by steam train. This can be a full day excursion – starting and finishing in Santiago – or a way to transfer to the wine district for a longer stay. The journey starts by road from the capital to San Fernando where you board the train for the rest of the journey to Santa Cruz. Once on board, there is folklore entertainment, a light cocktail with typical Chilean food and, most importantly, wine tasting. On arrival in Santa Cruz the wine theme is continued with a visit to a local winery before lunch at the Santa Cruz Plaza hotel. The day continues with a visit to the Colchagua Museum before either commencing the journey back to Santiago by road or staying at the Hotel Santa Cruz Plaza. The train runs every Saturday in high season and every other Saturday in low season. Vina La Playa Hotel Santa Cruz Plaza Colchagua Valley Santa Cruz BB In the heart of the Colchagua Valley, the Vina La Playa hotel is set in the beautiful vineyards of the same name, located on the banks of the Tinguiririca River. The hotel is easily accessible by car or via the private airstrip. The hotel is a classic Chilean hacienda-style property with inviting family atmosphere. There are 7 rooms and 4 suites for guests; a gourmet restaurant, bar, lounge with fireplace, games room, souvenir store, heliport, outdoor swimming pool and tennis court. Horse riding, wine tasting, cycle hire, canoeing and day trips to regional attractions can also be arranged. 160 Sunvil Traveller BB This impressive hotel is full of charm and character and is ideally located for exploring the wine region. The facilties include a restaurant, bar, exercise room, sauna, jacuzzi, swimming pool, kids’ pool, games room and parking. There is also a very attractive terrace surrounded by gardens. The 44 comfortable rooms (including 3 suites) are equipped with air conditioning, cable TV, direct dial telephone and mini-bar. This reasonably priced hotel comes highly recommended. The only possible downside here could be for light sleepers, as the town clock chimes every hour! 4146 Sunvil 156-177 Chile_Sunvil_spreads 06/08/2010 15:24 Page 161 Chile Northern Chile Northern Chile - Arica & Putre Arica is Chile’s northernmost town – the Peruvian border is only 18km away. In fact, until 1880, Arica and Iquique belonged to Peru. The battle of the Morro, which signalled the end of the War of the Pacific in this region, ensured that Arica became part of the Chilean republic. The towering cliffs above the city house several monuments and fortifications, including the History and Arms Museum from which there are fantastic views. Arica is a popular, year-round resort, with beach weather almost every day. fishing has replaced mining as its primary industry. Ramshackle wooden houses, bars and a vibrant street life typify this town. Towards the southern end, the focus is on the beach, with palm-lined boardwalks, surfers hotels, condominiums and discotheques. One of Chile’s most accessible parks, Lauca National Park, is renowned largely for its active and dormant volcanoes and clear blue lakes. Among its spectacular features is Lake Chungara, one of the world’s highest lakes located at the foot of the twin peak, Pallachata volcano. Here, you will find a profusion of wildlife, including flamingos, vicunas, vizcachas, foxes, condors, giant coots, and dozens of other bird species. Iquique, with a population of 140,000, is still one of the North’s largest ports - but The high rise apartment blocks and hotels along the beach are reminiscent of Miami Beach but on a lesser scale. The town is slowly spreading south along the coast, where many houses are built on sand and therefore vunerable to the area’s frequent earthquakes. Inland from Iquique are numerous geoglyphs, including The Giant of Atacama, at 86m high, the largest archaeological representation of a human figure in the world. Also worth seeing are the nitrate ghost towns of Humberstone and Santa Laura. There are 10 comfortable and spacious guest rooms, each with 2 double beds and a private bathroom. The hotel does not have a restaurant for dinner, however, there are good local restaurants within walking or driving distance. Famous for his controversial Parisian tower, his designs also dot the Latin American landscape, stretching from Mexico to Chile. Arica’s Iglesia San Marcos and the restored Aduana (customhouse) are but two examples. Later on in his life he was implicated in irregular contracts and was sentenced to two years in Prison and fined heavily. Although overturned on appeal, he never returned to his love of building. Please note, some areas of Lauca National Park and the Lake Chungara are located at high altitude, approximately 4400m above sea level. To allow the body to adjust to the altitude, it is strongly recommended to travel slowly and avoid sudden movements; to take plenty of bottled water and when dining, choose a light meal. From the frontier-like town of San Pedro de Atacama, many of the desert’s most dramatic sights are within easy reach. San Pedro is a charming oasis at the north end of the Salar de Atacama. This hip little adobe town is the number one destination for Chilean and foreign visitors. However, despite the fact that the bars and restaurants are busy at certain times of the year, there always seems to be a relaxed atmosphere around town. A number of the hotels in this area offer full board ‘all inclusive’ packages. However, we have also selected properties which offer more independence and freedom. Visit the Tatio Geysers at dawn, to see the steam gushing into the air, bathe in the natural hot springs or visit the Valley of the Moon. Calama is an ugly city and mainly serves as the airport gateway for San Pedro de Atacama. It is an ideal point to drop off your car or an ideal base from which to visit the Chuquicamata copper mine. This is the heart of Chile’s adventure tourism industry - hiking, trekking, mountain biking, fishing, horse-riding and white water rafting are all available here. Playa Grande is Pucon’s black sand beach which extends 4km east from La Peninsula to the Rio Pucon Delta. There are beach volleyball courts, rowing boats and windsurfs for hire. 25 km from Pucon is the quieter working town of Villarrica that shares it name with the smouldering, snow capped volcano that dominates its skyline and the lake on which it lies. The volcanic terrain has resulted in an abundance of hot springs, many of them in the Pucon area. Other places to visit nearby are the reserves of Santuario Cani, Huerquehue, the Villarrica National Park and Lake Caburgua. This area is ideal for self-drive, with possible trips to national parks, lakes, waterfalls and hot springs. The region can be easily combined with that of Puerto Montt/Puerto Varas which is a 4 hour drive away. The high season is January and February and the area can be somewhat crowded, as it is the top summer vacation spot for the Chileans. However, it should also be noted that in May and June some of the restaurants and shops close. Flights into Temuco airport from Santiago take approximately 1 1/4 hours. It is then a further 1 1/2 hour drive from Temuco to reach Pucon (car can be collected at the airport). Hotel Malalhue Villarrica Park Lake Hotel Huilo Huilo Pucon Pucon Pirihueico Lake, near Panguipulli BB This small and charming 24 bedroom hotel is particularly ideal for those looking for a traditional property of character. Useful Notes Lake Cruises We recommend two options; Full day trip from Petrohué to Peulla, lunch locally and return to the hotel (On Todos los Santos lake). There is also a 1 or 2 day trip which takes you from Petrohué to Bariloche with an optional overnight stay. The following day you travel up to the Argentinean border, cross Lake Frío and on to Puerto Blest and there pick-up the catamaran from Lake Nahuel Huapi to Bariloche in Argentina. The lake is set against the backdrop of the wonderful cone shaped volcano Osorno and quaint, German-built, villages along the western shores. Varas, just 20km from Puerto Montt offers a large variety of excursions and activities related to the natural attractions in the area. Frutillar is built on two levels and offers a great beach, backed by gardens. On the southern shores of Lake Llanquihue, admire the beauty of the Osorno and Calbuco Volcanos, in addition to the spectacular Petrohué Waterfalls. Puerto Montt is the capital of the lake district and the gateway to the rest of the region. It is a working port, a major exporter of wood chips, shellfish and salmon and supplies the inhabitants living in the remoter regions of the islands and fjords. From here it is also possible to cruise through the Andes which connect Puerto Montt with Bariloche in Argentina via a series of ferries and short bus trips. Puerto Vicente Perez Rosales National Park, created in 1926, was Chile’s first and continues to be its most popular. The showcase of the park is the lake Todos los Santos, a landlocked fjord that stretches over 36km. Nearby, Alerce Andino National Park sees relatively few visitors compared to the more famous Vicente Perez. The park offers a number of trails and the opportunity to rent a canoe for a paddle across Lake Sargazo. In the new building, there is a spa with swimming pool, sauna, treatment rooms with views of the Fjords. Also 20 spacious junior suites with Fjord view. 4146 Sunvil 156-177 Chile_Sunvil_spreads 06/08/2010 15:24 Page 167 Chile Northern Lake District Alerce & Quelat National Parks Alerce trees are an ancient species which grow at a rate of 1mm per year, those at Alerce National Park are 40-60m in height , one tree the ‘El Tata’ (the grandfather) has an estimated age of over 4000 years old. The forest has grown over the mountain side and from the mountain lodge (see below) situated approx 800m above sea level, there are great views out to sea, down to the valley and up to the highest peak at 1500m above sea level. Time seems to stand still here as visitors escape to enjoy the nature or the challenge of walking to the peak for a 360 degree view of the Andes. Quelat National Park is an evergreen forest with rocky slopes, steep valleys and impressive snow capped mountains. Never far from the sound of singing birds or waterfalls; rivers, canals, fjords and ice fields also share this beautiful and remote area. Quelat is home to many bird species, though the most famous ‘resident’ is the Hanging Glacier. Located at an elevated position, 1889m above sea level, this is an incredible sight. Take a guided hike through the forest and follow the fast flowing river to view the Hanging Glacier; see large sections of the glacier break free and listen to the thunderous crack of ice as the sections fall away. Patagonian Connection After a stay at Puyuhuapi Lodge and Spa during October to April, it is recommended to depart from the lodge by the Patagonian Express catamaran. Alerce Mountain Lodge Puyuhuapi Lodge & Spa Alerce Andino National Park Dorita Bay, near Quelat National Park BB Although just 36km from Puerto Montt, the Alerce Mountain Lodge is a remote spot. Once out of the city, the car journey takes a rugged and uneven mountain lane, climbing up to 800m above sea level, through a forest of ancient Alerce trees. The final part of the journey is to take a guided wooden raft to float across the lake to the lodge. Here awaits a very warm welcome and comfortable lodge high in the forest with views of the surrounding Alerce trees and overlooking the Andes. In the main building, there are 5 twin rooms and 1 double room each with private bathroom. In the grounds, there are 3 individual 2 bedroomed cabins with living area and private bathroom. The main lodge houses a lounge, bar, dining area and balcony lounge. With cosy fires and magnificent views, this is a wonderful place to relax! BB Set in a breathtaking location on the banks of Dorita Bay, Puyuhuapi Lodge & Spa is accessible only by sea. Visitors can travel here by car and a short boat ride across the bay or by the Patagonian Express catamaran through the Chilean fjords. Each of the 39 rooms have private facilities, central heating and private terrace or balcony. Guests can enjoy outdoor hot thermal springs located by the shore. The restaurant at the lodge has wonderful views over the bay and there is a roaring fire in the lounge nearby. The beauty of Puyuhuapi, the excellent service and the family atmosphere makes this a ‘must see’ destination. Board the catamaran at 07:00am and begin the journey sailing through the fjords to the San Rafael glacier. Get up close to this rarely visited glacier. Sail onward to Puerto Chacabuco arriving at approx.10:30pm to transfer to your hotel. Useful Notes Kingfishers A familiar sight at Puyuhuapi is the Kingfisher, also known as the ‘Martin River’. The wings of blue-green with a metallic tinge and orange belly are some of the characteristics that distinguish the Kingfisher from other birds. These colours vary depending on the light and provide a great photo opportunity. Please approach gently. Local flights land in Punta Arenas. Today, the city’s role is as a service provider for the petroleum and fishing industries. On the outskirts is Pali Aike National Park, a unique volcanic landscape with lava flows, extinct craters and various caves. There are also two penguin colonies which can be visited on day trips from Punta Arenas. We have based our programme around Torres del Paine National Park, which fully deserves its worldwide acclaim. No other park in South America can boast the amazing combination of breathtaking scenery, wildlife and dramatic walking trails and hiking. As a result, during the peak summer months, it can get a little crowded. However, to put it into perspective, it receives fewer visitors in a year than Yellowstone does in a single day! The winds in the park can exceed 120km/hour during the summer months. Wildlife in the park includes some 25 species of mammals, most notably pumas, guanacos and foxes. There are over 115 species of resident and migratory bird species including flamingos, coots, geese, raptors and the nandu (South American ostrich). Several glaciers cascade off the ice field and into the various lakes. Also worth a visit are the immense caves of Cueva del Milodon some 30m high, 70m wide and 200m deep. There is choice between staying in Puerto Natales and travelling into the park or alternatively staying in the more expensive lodges actually inside the park. Useful Notes Travelling to Torres del Paine Fly to Punta Arenas (from Santiago or Puerto Montt) where we recommend a private transfer direct to Torres del Paine National Park which is approximately a 4.5 hours scenic journey. Alternatively it is a 3 hour public bus ride to Puerto Natales (pre-booked) followed by a further 3 hour transfer time to reach the park. Public bus transfers from Punta Arenas to Puerto Natales run every day and time of arrival into the park is late evening. Transfers and excursions to Torres del Paine only operate from September 15April 15. Transfers outside of these months are limited and depend on climatic conditions. Combinations Why not combine Torres del Paine with Calafate, Argentina? See page 188 for details. The huge, enigmatic stone statues have become symbolic of the island. Today, all volcanic activity has ceased and the landscape is a combination of rolling grassy hills, lava flows and extinct craters, the highest being Terevaka, which rises 652 m above sea level. There are two white sand beaches on the island, Anakena and Ovahe, both of which are on the north shore and are ideal for snorkelling. There are also a number of reasonable diving sites. The majority of the island’s inhabitants live in and around the only town of Hanga Roa, where the hotels and restaurants are located. Scattered around the island are palms, eucalyptus and fruit trees including pineapple, avocado, banana, papaya and guava. Almost the entire perimeter of the island and all the archaeological sites are within the Rapa Nui National Park. There are still over 2000 speakers of Rapanui, the Polynesian language of Easter Island. The rainy season is March to October when you can expect short torrential downpours. Useful Notes Travel to and around Easter Island There are six flights a week from Santiago to Easter Island. There is no public transport on the island so we suggest that you either hire a car or join one of the local escorted group excursions. In order to appreciate the archaeological sites, we recommend that you have a guided tour. Walking, horse-riding or mountain biking will allow you to get off-the-beaten track and explore a number of the archaeological sites on the island. It is necessary to book well in advance, particularly during the peak month of February. It should be noted that due to Easter Island's remote location accommodation on the Island is generally rustic. In terms of development it is slightly behind mainland Chile and therefore language difficulties can crop up from time to time. At the time of writing there were approximately 884 Pesos to US$1. We recommend that you pay your hotel extras bills (i.e drinks, calls etc) with US$ dollars to try to avoid the 19% local tax. Visas Travellers with British Passports do not need visas for Chile, but please ensure that your passport has at least 6 months to run. You will also be required to show your passport at the land border if you plan to cross over into Argentina, Peru or Bolivia. If you are a foreign national living in the UK, please ensure that you have all the correct papers before leaving the UK. If your paperwork is not in order, you will be refused entry back into the UK and fined a minimum of £2,000 per person and we cannot be held responsible for the consequences. Language Spanish is the spoken language. English is spoken by many and communication is generally not a problem. Food & Drink Chile’s varied and excellent cuisine features seafood, beef, fresh fruit and vegetables. The seafood is the real distinguishing factor including the delicious shellfish and conger eel stew! There are also many Italian, French, Mexican and Peruvian restaurants in the main towns. $20 per person buys a decent 3 course meal - food in the regions can be even less, although the restaurants tend to be less sophisticated. Dinner in most places is served from 8pm onwards as Chileans tend to eat later - so have a big lunch! It is customary to tip about 10% of the bill. Chilean wines are South America’s best and rate amongst some of the finest in the world. Vaccinations / Health Almost none of the tropical diseases common in other Latin American destinations - such as Malaria, typhoid and yellow fever are a concern in Chile. However, you should always check with your local doctor for the latest health requirements no later than six weeks before your departure. The heat and humidity of the tropics make you sweat profusely and can also make you feel lethargic (particularly in the north) - to avoid cramps and heat exhaustion it is important to maintain a high fluid intake Approx. daily flying times The immense length of Chile makes flying to most destinations a very attractive option and an excellent way of maximizing your time. Most cities have a domestic airport. Flights will often touch-down in other places enroute to your destination. When flying from north to south, a change in Santiago will be necessary. Government health policy requires people who have visited an endemic area for Yellow Fever (within 30 days prior to travel to Easter Island) to have a Yellow Fever vaccination certificate. Hotel Gradings There is no official class or star structure for accommodation. Our accommodation is generally of a three to four star European standard but the remote lodges are simpler. All rooms have private facilities, but in the simpler lodges, the wash basins (not the showers) are with cold water only. Breakfasts usually comprise of toast, eggs, sandwiches, tea and powdered coffee. Weather / When to Go The country’s amazing geographical variety can make a visit rewarding in any season. December - February are, overall, the hottest months throughout the country. However, the seasons do vary by region. Northern Chile basically receives no rain at any time of the year (apart from the northerly coastline regions and the altiplanic winter which only affects the altiplano December February) and is attractive at any time of the year. Santiago and Central Chile has a Mediterranean climate and is best in the spring (September until November) or autumn (February until April). The Lakes region and Torres del Paine National Park are best seen in their summer months (December until March). The climate on Easter Island is subtropical and therefore you can expect warm weather and bursts of torrential downpours. Summer time rains are typically short and violent while winter rains are longer and gentler. Easter island is cheaper and far less crowded outside the summer months. Time There is a period of 2 weeks in spring and 2 weeks in Autumn when the time difference is 4 and 3 hours respectively behind Greenwich Mean Time (GMT). The clocks go forward and back like the UK - therefore during the winter there is a 5 hour difference and in the summer it is 3. Easter island is 2 hours behind Chile mainland. Boasting the lowest temperatures on record, this vast continent is covered by a cape of ice, formed by an accumulation of snow over hundreds of thousands of years. Hidden beneath lie mountains and valleys. You’ll be witness to huge ice masses breaking off, forming icebergs. The key attraction to Antarctica is the wildlife; penguins, minke whales, seals and the endangered wandering albatross, to name but a few. Rubber zodiacs take visitors ashore, allowing one to wander admist colonies of unafraid and inquisitive animals and to take fantastic photographs. The Antarctic cruise season operates during the Antarctic summer which runs from November to mid March. November, the beginning of the Antarctic summer, is the time to see penguins courting, seals and sea birds appearing, in addition to magnificent sunrises and sunsets against pristine icebergs. December and January, the time when temperatures are starting to rise, see a flurry of wildlife activity including the hatching of penguin chicks. February sees an increase in whale sightings whilst the penguin chicks and baby fur seals leave their nests and head out to sea. Please contact our office for further details.
