First, a higher wattage iron will heat quicker and stay hotter during your work. Irons designed for stained glass are generally rated for 80 to 120 watts. Do not buy an iron rated for less than 80 watts, you’ll only waste your money and become frustrated! Second, a thermostatically controlled iron contains a mechanism that insures the iron “burns” at a constant, even heat. The heat at which it “burns” depends upon the iron tip. A non-thermostatically controlled iron requires a temperature controller (rheostat) to vary the temperature. Please note: thermostatic and non-thermostatic controlled iron tips are not compatible. Buy only the tips recommended for your iron! 600º - Designed for working in lead came. Atlantic Stained Glass Crash Course in ... Pattern Shears Pattern shears, whether foil, lead or mosaic - all serve the same basic purpose: to reduce the size of the pattern pieces so they will fit into the design once foiled, leaded or set into the mosaic. Basically, they serve to correct the space needed to accomodate the thickness of the copper foil, the heart of the lead came and the space required by the cement. Using pattern shears eliminates the need to make two passes with regular scissors, as well as taking the guess work out of having to calculate how much to remove. Pattern shears are a useful but often overlooked tool of the trade. It’s very difficult to do quality, error-free work without them. Instructor Tip ~ the best way to use these shears is to cut with short, choppy steps. Using the shears in this manner prevents the “throat” of the shears from jamming with paper. Want to extend the life of your pattern shears? Don’t cut anything other than patterns! These shears can’t be sharpened, so don’t cut foil, cardboard, etc ...
