The motel was nice; the banquet food was the best we have had at a district rally. The theme was the Olympics and it opened with Chapter B in the lead as everyone paraded in to light the torch and open the rally. Kim Ferland had the honor of lighting the torch followed by a delicious pasta bar. Then it was the light parade into Gettysburg with 83 bikes. Friday Ice Cream Coordinators dawned with bright sunshine and lots of seminars and especially the Jeff and Carol Dale games. Chapter B’s quilt ticket sales were well received with nu- 717-575-0697 merous comments of how beautiful it was. The evening was started Email: cdale@embarqmail.com with ice cream and then chapter theme songs. Then laughter filled Ride Coordinators the room as each chapter presented their skit or contribution to the Dan and Denise Moyer entertainment. We discovered a new side of Craig Lenhard. Don and Mary enjoyed the ride to Gettysburg so much they arrived, turned around, went home and rode back again. At the closing banquet Chapter B was recognized as District Chapter of the Year and presented with the torch. Our quilt was won by Jodi Lufsey from PA Chapter I. Dana and Danise did a superior job of making this banquet fun, fun, fun. Continued from previous page: In 2014 the District Rally will be held in Erie PA, great plans are developing now. An evening ride to the lake to watch the sunset and then a light parade home to the convention center is part of the fun. Literature will be available at the gathering. Wayne Ferland is planning a ride to Erie on the weekend of October 12th.this will be an excellent opportunity to check lodging and the area in general. Be sure to sign up if you would like to go. After the September 28th gathering a ride to the goat races has been planned. See the flyer in this newsletter. As you are aware on September 18th Chapter B represented GWRRA in the Solanco parade and the duration of the fair maintained a booth promoting motorcycle awareness. Chapter B was well represented with eleven bikes in the parade and the reception from the spectators was warm. During the fair our chapter member enjoyed showing their bikes and speaking to many interested people. On Thurs and Friday the 20’ x 30’ tent was filled to over flowing with five bikes. Several new bike owners plan to join us at our gathering. We will be glad to see them. Thanks to all who participated in displaying their bikes and speaking to the people. John and I could not have handled the number of interested people . A special thanks to Dave Aument for the loan of his tent and the help in setting it up and displaying his new bike all week. As we get into the fall riding with cooler weather, put on your jacket and enjoy the beautiful colors; don’t let the cooler weather rob you of the last rides of 2013. Ride safe and we hope to see you September 28th at the gathering and enjoying the goat races. Remember, we are always available-just a call away. Hugs to all, John and Jeanne From our Assistant Directors—Wayne and Kim Ferland Welcome Fall! The weather is getting changeable so it is a little hard to plan your riding gear but we have lots of beautiful riding days still ahead. Remember to dress in layers so you can stay comfortable. We had a great time at the Pa District rally in September. Plan now to join us next year in Erie. It will be the first weekend after labor day and the ride out there will be great. "BEE" in Erie in 2014 : As usual there are lots of events planned for October. We hope to see many of you throughout the month. Start thinking about what activities you want to see planned for next year. We will have a brainstorming session at the November gathering to collect ideas. MEMBERSHIP ENHANCEMENT COORDINATOR (M.E.C.) – Don Engle________ As most of you know, I ride all year round, so long as there is no ice on the roads, I ride! For those of you other “crazy’s” (as my wife refers to me) out there, you know that there is an additional thrill to fall and winter riding. First and foremost is the little chill that exhilarates the body, mind and soul. Sometimes, as we get older it’s a little to exhilarating and makes for a quick pee stop. But most times, it’s just enough to snap your senses into shape from the fresh clean air, the smell of leaves and dead skunk on the roads, and the warmth of the afternoon sun on the face. Second, is the skill enhancement. Riding into the blinding sun while trying to see what might be hidden in the grey shadows (even with the best of sunglasses) and trying to see through the bug filled windshield can be a real challenge. Not to mention the darkness of the cold mornings and cool nights. So, for those of you that want to join the rest of us Fall and Winter crazy riders here are some of my tips: Check your tires for proper pressure often. Very important. Check your tread life – you need good adhesion on rainy and leaf covered roads. Check to make sure all your lights are working, often. Seems lights have a way of burning out more in the winter time. Make sure you ride with every light you have in the on position! Invest in some heated gear or play with layers of clothing to find variable combinations for whatever Fall and Winter temperatures can throw at you. (On my recent 40 to Phoenix trip last March, after my heating gear gave out, I found 7 layers peeled off during the day actually worked just as good. Just make sure your layers don’t restrict your arm and head mobility.) I have a heated jacket liner and heated gloves. I either wear long johns if I’m wearing dress slacks to work or ski pants that I can remove if I’m wearing blue jeans or corduroy. Be creative. The low sun does get in your eyes at times making it impossible to see what is in the shadows. Experiment with different types of face shields, sunglasses and sun-blockers to create shade over your eyes. I used a row of duct tape on the bottom of my face shield that when flipped up, creats a sun visor that shaded my sunglasses just enough to make it possible to see in the shadows. Ride aware. If you sometimes can’t see – then the Cagers sometimes won’t see you. Be safe! Check weather reports and road conditions. If you ride in the winter like me, don’t ride at all if you even think there might be ice on the roads. I’ll take the car, check the route I normally ride and check for icy spots, frozen puddles, etc. and then ride the next day or even drive a different route, even if there is snow on the grass. Winter riding requires more planning for a safe ride. Have fun! Fall and Winter riding really can be fun and can add a whole new level to your senses and skills level if you properly plan, dress, and alert yourself to the challenges. Ride on! Fall is a beautiful time of year to see the countryside. The fall colors can be stunning, the weather is usually excellent with clear sunny days and it is cool so you aren’t in any danger of getting hypothermia. All good stuff, but the other side of the coin is also present, especially in farm country. During the fall, leaves can accumulate on the roadway which may hide potholes, slick pavements, or debris on the road. Farmers are harvesting their crops and driving heavy equipment on the road, so you need to keep watch ahead and have a plan if you come upon any of these dangers. If it rained recently, wet leaves can cause control issues and slipping on this road debris. Deer can be moving around as hunting season gets underway. And as we all know, deer and other wildlife are unpredictable when you come upon a roadway. And don’t forget about the leaf peepers in cars that slow down to see the beautiful autumn scenery or the increased traffic because of the weather and fall color! So it’s a great idea to remember some of these riding safety tips: Assume you are invisible to other drivers. Don’t ever assume another driver knows you’re there. Adhere to the attitude that no one else on the road is concerned with your personal safety. Learn to use a riding strategy like SEE (search, evaluate, execute) to manage the roadway and traffic. You can learn SEE in a basic or advanced training course. Look where you want to go. It’s called visual directional control. Keep your head and eyes oriented 3-4 seconds ahead of you when cornering. You can get instruction and practice in this technique in a basic or advanced training course. In an emergency, do not stare at the guardrail, the gravel shoulder or the oncoming car –– chances are you’ll hit whatever you’re trying to avoid. (The term for this is target fixation.) Countersteer. Use precise inputs to the handgrips, not body lean, to lean the motorcycle. When you countersteer, you initially turn the handlebars in the opposite direction you think you should. Press forward on the right handgrip, the bike leans right. Press forward on the left handgrip, the bike leans left. (Note: countersteering is not how you turn a motorcycle; it’s how you lean a motorcycle.) You can learn to use this technique in a controlled setting by taking a basic or advanced training course. Never stop riding the bike. (GO TO NEXT PAGE) Use both brakes. Your front brake provides 70 percent or more of your stopping power in an emergency. Squeeze, do not grab, the front brake, and keep squeezing, increasing the squeezing pressure until you’ve slowed sufficiently or stopped. Untrained riders are often afraid to use the front brake, for fear of flipping over. Trained riders know better. You can learn how to use your front brake for maximum braking in a basic or advanced training course. Never stop riding the bike. Don’t ever give up control of your motorcycle. “Laying it down” is not a strategy. The person with the most control of any situation is you. Look where you want to go, countersteer or use maximum braking to avoid a crash. You can get instruction and practice in all these techniques by taking a basic or advanced training course. Take it from one who knows, slow down, especially if you are unsure of what’s coming or is any condition exists ahead that could create a safety problem. And remember, dress properly to protect yourself and your passenger, especially this time of year! Ride safe and have fun!
