1999 1.5 Troy ounce medallion, .9999 fine struck for the Nevada State
Museum commemorating the first discovery of gold in July 1849 near
Dayton, Nevada. The piece is proof. On the edge is the mint mark CC. A

$50 Slug Facsimiles and Related Material
$50 Slug Facsimiles must have at least one side imitating, resembling, and
using the same design as one of the original octagon $50 gold slugs issued by
the U.S. Assy Office or A. Humbert. They must have the same eagle, though
the working may differ. Also included in this category are $50 Wass-Molitor
facsimiles, $50 Kellogg & Co. facsimiles, $50 Pan-Pacific facsimiles and items
modeled after $50 Slugs and Coins, indluding some miscellaneous pin hangers. Bill Weber long wished to write a book on slug facsimiles, which he was
passionate about collecting. This catalog represents the last of his incredible
collection.

Chopmarked Coins
Chopmarked coins represent a special part of numismatics and the history of the dollar. These coins (by most general and common definition)
were usually United States trade dollars that have been counterstamped
or marked with Chinese characters to signify approval of the coins’ worth
and authenticity in the Chinese marketplace. F.M. Rose wrote a book
titled Chopmarks in 1987, which states that the term “chopmark” is said
to have been taken from the Indian term “chappa” or “choppa”, which
means an official stamp or seal. While chopmarking was once considered
a time-honored tradition in China, the U.S. Government termed the coins
damaged or “mutilated” in an apparent attempt to avoid redeeming them.
Still, thousands of coins were marked by Chinese merchants (including
some counterfeit coins in an effort to pass them off) to the point where
some coins became misshapen and almost illegible because they were
so heavily marked. The actual marks are normally Chinese characters or
designs that were imprinted with ink or stamped with punches on the
surface of the coin. They are more commonly seen on silver coins, than
gold. Rose has an extensive list of types of chopmarks in his book, which
includes variations such as test marks (mostly done to uncover plating),
tiny symbols, larger Chinese characters, rarely seen relief marks, uncommon rectangular assay marks, Latin letters, numbers, rare and collectible

Golden Gate International Exposition
Bill Weber loved the Golden Gate Expo held in 1939-40 on Treasure Island, built specifically for the
Expo. It commemorated the completion and opening of the two most important bridges in the history of
the San Francisco Area, the Golden Gate Bridge, which connected San Francisco to the northern mainland,
and the Oakland Bay Bridge, which connected San Francisco with the east bay mainland.
