2008-2009 Welcome to Lansing Community College…the right choice for your college education. Whether you are working toward an associate degree, certificate, or two-year transfer degree, LCC has a program designed for your success. In addition to our nearly 500 program areas and more than 150 degrees and certificates, we also offer a variety of financial awards and scholarships. This booklet provides descriptions, selection criteria, and application procedures for Honors Program Awards, Occupational Program Awards, Foundation Scholarships, and Student Leadership Academy Service Scholarships. The booklet also provides details on Board of Trustee Awards and Women's Resource Center and Returning Adult Program Awards. If you are interested in applying for an award or scholarship, fill out and submit the application form provided in the back of this booklet. Be sure to include all the necessary documents specified in the application checklist. This year’s application deadline is February 1, 2008. Honors Program Awards Each year, Lansing Community College offers up to 36 Honors Program Awards to new, currently enrolled, or returning students who have demonstrated outstanding academic achievement and plan to complete a two-year transfer curriculum at LCC and then transfer to a four-year institution to pursue a bachelor's degree. Although students following a transfer program may plan to earn a general associate, associate in arts, or associate in science degree, their primary objective in attending LCC is to complete general education, required, and recommended courses in preparation for transfer to a four-year college or university. Lists of common transfer majors may be found at www.lcc.edu/catalog/degree_certificateprograms/current/aaas. The awards are offered for a maximum of five semesters over a period of two consecutive years. Renewal each semester is contingent upon the recipient meeting all award requirements. Each recipient will have $1177 applied directly to his or her account to reduce the balance for each fall and spring semester covered by the award and $589 if he or she chooses to use the award during a summer. These amounts will cover approximately 16 billing hours in Fall and Spring Semesters and 8 billing hours in Summer Semester. An award recipient must: n Be a citizen or permanent resident of the U.S. Award Selection Criteria Selection is based on grade point average, ACT scores, ability in the selected area of study, letters of reference, a written personal statement and possibly an interview. Some curricula may require auditions or portfolios. Once the application is received, students will be notified if an audition or portfolio is required. The Lansing Community College Honors Program Honors Program Award recipients automatically become members of the LCC Honors Program and must participate as a condition of the award. The Honors Program provides enriched courses, special advising services, community service options, and other enhanced learning opportunities for students capable of a special challenge in higher education. Honors Program Requirements In order to maintain their membership in the Honors Program and retain their Honors Program Award, students must: n Reside in the LCC district. n Follow an approved LCC transfer curriculum. n Be a high school graduate. n Maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.2 or higher. n Have a cumulative high school grade point average of at least 3.2 (new student) or a cumulative college grade point average of at least 3.2 and a minimum of 16 transferable college credits earned (currently enrolled or returning student). n Successfully complete at least twelve approved credits Fall and Spring Semesters. n Have a composite ACT score of at least 20 OR college-level reading, writing, and mathematics skills as determined by LCC basic skills tests. n Summer Session enrollment is optional. Summer Session enrollment requires at least three approved credits. n Successfully complete at least one Honors course each Fall and Spring Semester. n Submit their proposed class schedules for approval before registering each semester. For more information, please contact: HONORS PROGRAM AWARDS COORDINATOR Telephone: (517) 483-1057 2 Occupational Program Awards Each year, Lansing Community College offers up to 49 Occupational Program Awards to new, currently enrolled, or returning students who have demonstrated outstanding academic achievement and plan to complete a one-year certificate of completion or a twoyear occupational degree at LCC. Although students following an occupational program may eventually transfer to a four-year institution, their primary objective in attending LCC is to seek education and the acquisition of skills needed to enter the work force or to advance in their current careers. A list of current LCC occupational programs, including certificates and associate degrees in applied arts, applied science, and business, may be found at www.lcc.edu/catalog/ degree_certificateprograms/current/applied/ Award Selection Criteria The awards are offered for a maximum of five semesters over a period of two consecutive years. Renewal each semester is contingent upon the recipient meeting all award requirements. Each recipient will have $924 applied directly to his or her account to reduce the balance for each fall and spring semester covered by the award and $462 if he or she chooses to use the award during a summer. These amounts will cover approximately 12 billing hours in Fall and Spring Semesters and 6 billing hours in Summer Semester. An award recipient must: n Students must successfully complete at least six approved credits Fall and Spring Semesters. n Be a citizen or permanent resident of the U.S. OCCUPATIONAL PROGRAM AWARDS COORDINATOR Telephone: (517) 483-1723 n Reside in the LCC district. Selection is based on grade point average, ability in the selected area of study, letters of reference, and a written personal statement. The Selection Committee will attempt to equitably distribute available awards among the various occupational program areas. Occupational Program Award Requirements n Students must follow an approved LCC occupational curriculum. n Students must maintain a grade point average of 3.0 or higher. n Summer Session enrollment is optional. Summer Session enrollment requires at least three approved credits. For more information, please contact: n Be a high school graduate. n Pursue an approved LCC occupational curriculum. n Possess excellent academic ability in the area of study he/she proposes to pursue. n Have a cumulative high school grade point average of at least 3.0 (new student) OR a cumulative college grade point average of a least 3.0 (currently enrolled or returning student). 3 4 Foundation Scholarships for 2008-2009 The Lansing Community College Foundation offers numerous scholarships, funded by the contributions of businesses, non-profit entities, and individuals, to students who meet the criteria established by the scholarship donors. Students will be considered for any Foundation scholarship especially those most aligned with their career and academic goals. Generally the following guidelines apply: n Applicants may be new or returning students. n May reside in or out of the LCC district. n Awarded students will be sent an acceptance form with stated criteria. The student must return the form for the scholarship to be applied to their account. n Recipients must maintain good academic standing. Falling below a 2.0 GPA will automatically disqualify you for funding the following semester. The following list includes the current Foundation scholarships available in the various LCC divisions and departments. The LCC Foundation manages scholarships totaling over $700,000 per academic year. New scholarships may have been added since this booklet was published. Instead, please contact your high school counseling office to determine criteria and method of application for a Board of Trustees Award. 12 Student Leadership Academy Service Scholarships Each year, Lansing Community College offers up to 23 Student Leadership Academy Awards to new, current and returning students who are interested in gaining additional leadership and community service experiences through a two-year leadership curriculum while concurrently following a primary college program of study. The award is a two year educational award of $4,554 dollars. n Currently enrolled or returning Lansing Community College students must have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.0 or higher and must be in good standing (i.e., not on academic or social probation). Practice requirements include A two (2) credit Leadership Development Practicum class (LEAD 210) during third semester, (arranged.) This class provides both on and off campus leadership and service practicum experiences. A two (2) credit Leadership Development Practicum class (LEAD 211) during the fourth semester (arranged.) This class provides both on and off campus leadership and service practicum experiences. Mentor a Lansing School District middle school student, (16 hours/semester). n High school seniors must have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.0 or higher. Participating in planned community service activities in the Lansing community such as: Adopt a River, Into the Streets, and an approved Individual Service Project (32 hours/semester). Student Leadership Academy Selection Criteria Additional Requirements Selection is based on grade point average, written personal statements, letters of reference, service history, and interviews. Enroll for at least 6 credits, including the required Student Leadership Development Series course each semester. The Student Leadership Academy Maintain at least a 2.0 grade in Student Leadership Development Series courses and a 2.0 overall grade point average each semester. The Lansing Community College Student Leadership Academy is a unique introductory leadership development experience combining leadership theory with practice on campus and in community service settings. Members are exposed to a wide array of leadership and service opportunities to develop a positive sense of leadership and service. The Academy uses Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society’s Leadership Development Program concepts to produce highly skilled and experienced graduates in the areas of leadership and service. Theory requirements include A three (3) credit Leadership Development class (LEAD 110) during first semester, (2 hours per week.) Course topics: Responsibilities of Leadership, Articulating a Vision, Leading with Goals, Creative Problem Solving/Decision Making, Managing Time, Team Building, Empowering and Delegating, Managing Conflict, Initiating Change, Ethics, Servant Leadership. A two (2) credit Leadership Development class (LEAD 111) during second semester, (2 hours per week.) This class reinforces the skills introduced in the first class. Be in good standing (i.e., not on academic or social probation) each semester. Submit a letter of recommendation from a teacher, counselor, or community service/leadership agency representative who is knowledgeable about your leadership potential and performance. Students applying to the Student Leadership Academy may also apply for an Honors Program Award, an Occupational Program Award, a Transfer Program Award, or a Foundation Scholarship. For more information, please contact: STUDENT LEADERSHIP ACADEMY SCHOLARSHIPS COORDINATOR Telephone: (517) 483-1285 13 Women’s Resource Center and Returning Adult Program The Women’s Resource Center and Returning Adult Program offers grants for tuition, fees, textbooks, transportation and child care. These are in addition to other awards listed in this booklet. These grants have a different application form and different deadlines. To apply, pick up an application from— Women’s Resource Center and Returning Adult Program Lansing Community College Gannon Vocational-Technical Center Suite 2300 (517) 483-1199 or (800) 644-4522 www.lcc.edu/wrc Single Parent/Displaced Homemaker/ Non-Traditional Career/Special Populations (SP/DH/NT/SPOPS) Grant Assistance with tuition, textbooks and transportation is available to students who belong to one of these special populations. Income guidelines and other eligibility criteria apply. According to federal guidelines, those with the greatest financial need will have priority. The Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Growth, Community College Services Unit, provides funds for this program. This Grant is intended to assist students in occupational programs. To qualify, you must fit one of these descriptions and provide documentation: 1.Non-traditional career trainee Women and men who wish to seek employment in occupations that traditionally have been underrepresented by their sex. 2.Individual with Limited English Proficiency An adult who has limited ability in speaking, reading, writing, or understanding English and whose native language is not English. 3.Individual with a disability Individual who has a documented disability related to hearing, speech, vision, learning, mobility, psychiatric function or substance abuse or who has documented health-related impairments such as diabetes, epilepsy, heart disease, cancer, multiple sclerosis, muscular dystrophy, hemophilia or is HIV positive. 4.Economically disadvantaged Person from economically disadvantaged family, including foster children, Pell grant or other financial assistance recipients or migrants. 14 5.Academically disadvantaged An individual whose assessment scores indicate a need for skill development in reading, writing and/or math, who has less than a 2.0 grade point average, or who has multiple withdrawals or drops. 6.Single pregnant woman. 7.Single parent A parent who (a) is unmarried (i.e., divorced, widowed, or never married) or separated or legally separated from a spouse and (b) has a minor child or children for which the parent has either custody or joint custody. 8.Homemaker An adult who has worked primarily without pay to care for the home and family, has diminished marketable skills, and is unemployed or underemployed. 9.Displaced homemaker A homemaker, unemployed or underemployed, who: (a) has been dependent on the income of a relative but is no longer supported by such income, or (b) because of divorce, separation, or the death or disability of a spouse must prepare for paid employment, or (c) has been dependent on public assistance but is no longer supported by such income or is within two years of being ineligible for it. Child Care Grants Awards help defray child care costs while eligible parents attend LCC. May be used for child care with any licensed child care provider. Income guidelines and other eligibility criteria apply. Women’s Resource Center Foundation Grants These awards are for people whose education has been interrupted for at least six years or who have been out of the job/education market for six years or more due to other responsibilities. APPLICATION CHECKLIST FIRST: o Personal statement explaining your college and career goals. This statement must be at least 250 words in length and should include information about: Review the information in this booklet carefully. NEXT: n Complete the Award/Scholarship/Admission Form on page 16. It is necessary to complete only one form. n Indicate the area of study you plan to pursue. n Indicate your award/scholarship preference. n Include the materials listed in the application checklist in the next column. Recipients must submit their written acceptance of the award or scholarship no later than April 18, 2008. The following items MUST be included with your application for all awards and scholarships. o Most recent transcript (high school or college). (a) your selected area of study; (b) your academic goals at LCC and/or a four-year school; and (c) the specific occupation or profession you intend to enter. o Two letters of recommendation. At least one of these letters must be from a teacher, school counselor, school administrator, or other professional who knows your qualities as a student. Student Number or Social Security Number State and Federal Law protects the privacy of your records Providing your Social Security number is voluntary. It will be used for keeping records, doing research and reporting purposes.
