#D23Expo WELCOME TO THE D23 EXPO! AD On behalf of everyone at The Walt Disney Company, welcome to our second D23 Expo and thank you for joining us to celebrate the magic, wonder, and adventure of Disney at this remarkable three-day gathering created especially for you, our most passionate and devoted fans. It’s hard to believe it’s been nearly two years since tens of thousands of Disney fans from around the world gathered here at the Anaheim Convention Center for our inaugural D23 Expo, and we couldn’t be happier to open the doors of Disney to you once again and share with you all the excitement of our Company’s past, present, and future. Planning for this year’s D23 Expo began almost as soon as the doors to the first one closed, and from celebrity appearances and eyepopping pavilions to fascinating presentations and once-in-a-lifetime experiences, there’s plenty of magic for everyone at D23 Expo 2011. You can begin at the Treasures of the Walt Disney Archives exhibit, which doubled in size this year and features crown jewels from our collection, including incredible props, costumes, and set pieces from some of our most iconic films, including Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland, Pirates of the Caribbean, and TRON: Legacy. You'll have the rare opportunity to screen selections from the Studio’s upcoming slate, which includes The Muppets, John Carter, Disney·Pixar’s Brave, Marvel’s The Avengers, and much more, be among the first to see The Lion King in wondrous 3D before its limited theater engagement begins September 16, meet your favorite Disney Channel stars up close and in person, and get a first-hand look at what the storytellers at Walt Disney Imagineering are dreaming up as they create the future of Disney theme park entertainment and experiences. No matter what part of Disney warms your heart, stirs memories, or fills you with wonder, you will discover something magical everywhere you turn as you stroll through the pavilions, screening rooms, exhibition halls, and presentation theaters that await you. We hope you enjoy the D23 Expo—the ultimate Disney fan event. Bob Iger President and CEO The Walt Disney Company 1 TABLE OF CONTENTS D23 Expo Dream Store BE OUR GUEST! SUNDAY AUGUST 21 18 D23 Expo’s Fan Art Contest and Gallery 10:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. Artist Mike Clitherow For D23 Expo’s 2011 Disney Fan Art Contest, Disney fans were asked to submit two- or threedimensional art pieces inspired by One Hundred and One Dalmatians, which celebrates its 50th anniversary this year. Patrick Johnson, who paid tribute to the animated film's iconic villain with "Tiki de Vil," is this year's featured artist. As the dangerously determined Cruella de Vil chases after the dalmatians, her eyes become spirals, her teeth are bared, and her hair looks like the mane of a wild beast. In this moment she is transformed into a savage, graphical image not unlike a tiki. To give the look of wood without the weight, "Tiki de Vil" was carved out of dense lightweight foam, covered with spray adhesive, and painted with acrylics. 1:30 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. Precious Moments Doll Artist Linda Rick 3:30 p.m. – 5:30 p.m. Disney Miniaturist and Sculptor Robert Olszewski Patirck Johnson’s "Tiki de Vil" and other entries from the Disney Fan Art Contest are displayed in the Fan Art Gallery on the Second Floor in the Treasures of the Walt Disney Archives exhibit. Schedules are subject to change without notice. Suddenly, a broom from Fantasia appears and takes Mickey’s paint. Before you know it, Mickey is chasing the broom, which transports Mickey, and his painting, into a fresh, color-filled world. Remember... It All Started with a Mouse is a tribute to Walt’s legacy and visionary imagination. The portrait captures Walt’s joy and laughter through his contagious smile. Noah surrounds Walt with color, allowing each of us to share in his spirit of animation. The color palette cleverly reveals this year’s celebrated film anniversaries (101 Dalmatians, Alice in Wonderland, Dumbo, and Beauty and the Beast). Look a little closer and observe how the swirls of color subtly shape an iconic 23. Explore the piece further and discover 23 hidden Mickeys. And, in a nod to all animation artists, the posted note is what Walt considered the “good stuff”—never throw out any idea. Born and raised in Orange County, California, Noah is a well-known local artist, who, for the past decade, has continued to interpret Disney characters magically through his unique style, which has become a favorite among Disney collectors worldwide. BARTON "BO" BOYD began his career at Disney 1968 as an assistant merchandise supervisor at Disneyland, and was an integral part of the team creating merchandise specifically for Disneyland and Walt Disney World. In 1997 he was named chairman of Disney Consumer Products, where he oversaw important initiatives such as Licensed Merchandise, Walt Disney Records, Hyperion Press, the entire line of Disney magazine products, Disney Catalog, Disney Interactive for computer games and educational software, ESPN—The Store, Walt Disney Classics Collection, Walt Disney Collectors Society, and the establishment of the first Disney Store outside of the Disney parks. JIM HENSON, an Emmy Award-winning television producer and Oscar-nominated film director, was the creator of the beloved global phenomenon The Muppets. The success of The Muppets and television shows like Sesame Street, The Muppet Show, and Fraggle Rock led Henson to create feature films, including The Muppet Movie, The Great Muppet Caper, and The Muppets Take Manhattan. The Muppets legacy continued with popular Disney films such as The Muppet Christmas Carol and Muppet Treasure Island, as well as the upcoming The Muppets, premiering this November. Although he was never actively involved in the development or construction of Walt Disney World, he was a frequent visitor when business took him to the East Coast, and in 1973, while he was President of the Irvine Company, Disney’s then CEO Donn Tatum asked him to serve on Disney’s Board of Directors.
