Greetings:
June is here with lots of fun to be had at Channel Islands Yacht Club.
Kim Hughes and Debra Tyhurst the creators of Jewelry Fare for Vera’s Bobbles has brought to
Channel Islands Yacht Club a flair of charm, elegant and fantastic creativity.
Our Club lady members and guests pick their choice of elegant jewelry and the gentlemen are required to satisfy this wish. A splendid evening out was experienced May 15th, a Channel Islands
Yacht Club fantastic dinner from the Epicureans, Jewelry Fashion models, along with the art of being
awarded the highest bid. Bottles of wine flowed, an experience of grandeur was had by all.
Our Club looks fantastic thank you to Rear Commodore Connie Calo and her fantastic House
Captain, our Eddy. Connie’s dinner teams are fantastic and we all have fun.
Hats off to our Vice Commodore Georgie Olsen: For an excellent representation of Channel Islands Yacht Club at the Hardway Race from Santa Barbara to Ventura.
Five wins overall by CIYC along with another of our own team member taking a fourth. What a
great showing. Winners CIYC Velero; Brent Swanson took the perpetual trophy and raced double
handed: CIYC Quiet Times; Tom Warshauer: CIYC Zoarces; Shelly Johnson, team Dan Alpern and
your Commodore Mary Foster. CIYC Grace; Bob Heatherly and wife along with son, Sean: This was
the first race for Sean, we now have a new junior sailor. Grandmother, Pat Heatherly is very proud.
Funatic; our CIYC Ram member Roxanne, Main Squeeze; our CIYC Ram member Bill Brayton and
regular member Kurt Ingram part of the team. Out Patient; our own CIYC member Mary Howard
was part of this team. When you see our Racing Team in and around the Club give them a hand they
contribute so much to us as a Yacht Club and are respected in the sport of racing. They uphold the
traditions, Corinthian spirit and excellent sportsmanship.
In the Commodore Classic Race of May 23rd we expect the trophy to come back home to CIYC.
Our RAM Shelly Johnson, owner of Zoarces, with Commodore Mary Foster and Past Commodore
Jack Borkowski will defend the title.
The pride I feel for CIYC goes without saying when I see our members assist in and around the
Club, bring home the gold and make CIYC stand out. We have a tough road ahead. We need your
full support to gain new members. Get behind the new member campaign encourage your friends to
be a part of the greatest Yacht Club around.
Remember to be in attendance for the July 16th Called Meeting to vote on the revised By-Laws.
Again I say something I never get tired of doing and that is thanking our Committee Chairs, all
the team members and support groups of CIYC. What would we do without the leadership and dedication of these people? Our family is the greatest
Mary

Well Boaters half of the 2010 cruising and racing season is behind us and what a wonderful time we have
had so far.
The Port Royal Regatta was held on the 1st of May with a modified course that was set on a 8.4 mile
race around Gina with 2 non-spinnaker classes and we had a wonderful race with 7 boats in attendance. Everyone enjoyed the day and the wonderful spaghetti dinner that Jack provided for us all at the
awards presentation. Lots of humor, good drinks and lots of laughter was had.
The Winner in class A - Fusee, 2nd -Zoarces, and 3rd - Breezy
The Winner in Class B - Out Patient, 2nd - Senior Advantage, 3rd - Advantage and 4th was
Spray. Thanks and kudos to all of you.
Also want to give special praise to our own Harry Krum who came in 3rd in his class in the Newport to
Ensenada Race. You ROCK Harry and your wonderful crew. The cruise to CIYC hosted by the Naylors
was awesome. Special thank you's to you both.
Our second TGIF was one of the best. Thanks Joyce, Clarke & your crew and to Bill and Vera and your
helpers with the race track. It was a delightful evening.
The Marina Del Rey Cruise over Memorial Day weekend will I'm sure be a delight. As always we will
have a great funpacked time. Will fill you in with next month's article. We have the Bob Cook Double
handed race on 5th of June so I’m looking forward to sharing all that info next month as well.
Be sure to put the Dingy Party on your agenda as it is going to be something all of you will enjoy. New
house, new band, great food and drink, but most of all great friends.
May the Powers that Be bring you all safely home to CIYC.

I would like to give a special thanks to two groups in our Club that have provide us with excellent meals.
The Beefeaters: these gentlemen have been providing dinners for the Club for approximately eight years.
They not only specialize in beef but in many other meat entrees.
The Epicureans: these ladies are new to the Club this year. Their dinners are everything, but beef.
Both of these dedicated groups are a crucial part of our dinner nights. Not only are they creative with their menus, they are selfless in the time that they spend to provide us a wonderful array of meals and all for our pleasure. I
personally, cannot thank them enough for taking care of at least two Saturday nights a month and sometimes more. I
would hope and I encourage you all to come and attend these dinners, they work hard and deserve your support.
We have some great events planned for the coming months. Look for more information regarding a Wine and
Cheese Tasting, All About Strawberries, and Salsa night.
If there is something special you would like to do, don’t be shy, let me know.
Thanks for your support.
Connie Calo
On behalf of the Channel Islanders I would
like to thank each of you who helped make our
first major fundraiser of 2010 a HUGE success. The April 25th Sunday Champagne
brunch was spectacular!!! The Sunday
brunch idea has been one I have been trying to
solidify for quite a while now and we are pleased to present 2 more this year; Sunday, August 8, and
Sunday October 3. More to follow at a later date, however for now please mark you calendars for these dates.

June is another busy month for the Islanders. Our board meeting is Thursday, June 3, the general membership meeting is Thursday, June 17, and our Father’s Day dinner is Saturday, June 19th at 6:30 p.m. This
month’s general membership meeting will be held at La Dolce Vita at Heritage Square in Oxnard. The menu
choices are exquisite. Please see the flyer in this Current’s issue for more info. Remember space is limited to 25 and
I encourage you to sign up early. Your Board of Directors will prepare Father’s Day dinner at a cost of $20.00.
See the flyer in this Current’s issue for more info.
We are also in the planning stages for a fun Christmas fundraiser. The date is November 19 so again, please
calendar this date as well. Ms. Kitty Brown has put together a terrific idea and I know it will be an overwhelming
success.
Have a great month, a great summer and Happy Father’s Day to all you wonderful dads.
I leave you with this thought – Wisdom is knowing when to speak your mind and when to mind your
speech!!!

The May, In-Harbor Fishing Tournament was canceled in the midst of Gale force winds, cold weather and
absent competitors. Last year it was uncomfortable in April so I move it to May but it did not result in improved weather. Hopefully the weather will improve for the other tourneys this year.
The water has stayed unseasonably cold so far this year. Some barracuda are showing up in the channel which
often bodes well for White Seabass. White Seabass often hold under the barracuda schools.
CIYC Lady Anglers Tournament, July 10th 2010
The annual Ladies fishing tourney has been rescheduled to Saturday July 10, 2010; 1 am to 4 pm. The weigh
in is at CIYC at 4PM. Sign up is $10 and the prizes will be distributed at 50% for 1st place, 30% 2nd place,
and 20% 3rd place, the Sign-up list is in the bar or e-mail me at frank.sullivan@roadrunner.com .
This event, in the past has been a blast. If you are a boat owner please let me know if you are willing to take
on some of these ladies. If you are a lady wishing to fish the tourney and don’t have a ride let me know. I
checked the tides and the moon phase and it all looks good. If the weather is good we should have a great
time.
Good Luck, remember Tourney fish don't count for Big Fish of the Month, and so keep turning them in.

Be a part of outrigger
racing history!
Would you like to be a part of an exciting, fun, scenic competition on the water? Sign up to “escort” an outrigger
canoe team as they race across the Channel and back. This is a renewal of a race held in the late 70’s, but with a
new twist. Coed teams of 12 (6 in the canoe and 6 on your escort boat) will race from CI Harbor to Arch Rock,
along the coast of Anacapa and back – about 30 miles. Every 30 minutes, the escort boat pulls ahead, drops 6
paddlers in the water, then swings back and picks up the paddlers who just finished paddling.
“Escort boats are a crucial and active
part of this race”
Requirements:
26-38 foot motor-powered boat
Marine radio for race communication & safety
GPS (desired)
Safety equipment – tow rope, throw buoy, first aid kit
Room to stow minimal crew gear – jackets, snacks, water, etc.
Fri. 8/13:
Evening Safety Meeting (HS lot - Curlew Way)
Check- in (gas expenses covered)
Meet your crew & plan a morning meeting place
Sat. 8/14
Meet up with your crew, load gear
8:30 am race start (est. finish 12:30 – 2:00 pm)
After-race party and awards
