Come to Lichfield District for a wide range of events and festivals that
include food and drink, theatre and music, pageantry and much more.
Our events swing into action in
springtime, starting with the Shrovetide
Fair in February, complete with a
traditional ceremony and pancake races.
This leads up to Lichfield Greenhill
Bower on May Bank Holiday Monday,
featuring a street parade of floats, a
fun fair, entertainment and more.
Summer is when festival season really
heats up, beginning with the
outstanding Lichfield Festival in July.
This annual multi-arts festival lasts for
ten days and brings the best national and
international artists and performers to
Lichfield for a celebration of music,
dance, drama, film, jazz, poetry,
literature and visual arts.
We bring summer to a close with two

Autumn is steeped in history with a
Georgian themed Heritage Weekend
when we celebrate Samuel Johnson’s
birthday and heritage attractions host

Lichfield District is steeped in history and tradition. We are proud of
the contribution our city and surrounding areas have made to the
country’s culture and identity.
Lichfield Cathedral is a must-see for any
visit to Lichfield with its stunning
architecture and treasures.
The cathedral is the place to find out
about the world famous Staffordshire
Hoard, unearthed on the outskirts of
Lichfield in 2009. A small collection of
the Anglo-Saxon treasure can be seen
alongside the Lichfield Angel and
St Chad Gospels in Lichfield Cathedral’s
Chapter House.
Fast forward to Georgian times when
Lichfield was a hub for academic
growth and home to notable figures
including Samuel Johnson, Erasmus
Darwin and David Garrick. It’s no
surprise that the city soon became
known as a centre for culture and
intellectual discussion.
Visit the home of physician, inventor
and Lunar member, Erasmus Darwin,
and learn how his pioneering
thinking paved the way for his
grandson Charles Darwin.
And, don’t forget to call in at the
childhood home of the influential
author of ‘A Dictionary of the English
Language’, Samuel Johnson. Step in and
explore his fascinating life in the Samuel
Johnson Birthplace Museum found on
Breadmarket Street.
For a whistle-stop tour of the city’s
2,000 year past, visit Lichfield Museum
housed in St Mary’s in the Market
Square, and make sure you don’t leave
without a copy of our Heritage Trail
from Tourist Information.
A modern piece of culture can be found
at Lichfield Garrick theatre, which offers
a full programme of performing arts.
For a reflective and thoughtful day,
visit the National Memorial Arboretum,
just outside Lichfield in Alrewas.
Featuring over 300 memorials, it
commemorates and celebrates those
who have given their lives in the
service of their country. It is also a
living centre of remembrance with
150 acres of woodland set within the
National Forest.*

beautiful city on a spire climb at St Mary’s in
