KS2 Geography 06: Investigating our local area
Peer Assessment Question and Expert Answer
Question
What do you think makes up a village?
Expert
Teacher
Answer
A village is made up of physical factors such as mountains, streams and rivers, and human
factors such as houses, roads, and other buildings. These features need to be looked after by
people if they are to keep them in good order. Villages are usually quite small but can be different
shapes. They are usually linked to towns or cities by roads and railways. The people in a village
often work away from the village as the jobs that they do have changed over the years. This
affects the type and amount of transport that is used daily.

KS2 Geography 11: Water
Peer Assessment Question and Expert Answer
Question
Why is water an essential part of life?
Expert
Teacher
Answer
Clean water is essential in order that living things survive. Water comes from the rain and is
produced as part of the water cycle. However water companies work on ensuring that there is
enough water supply to towns, cities and villages. They also ensure that the environment is
protected and that people have access to clean water. We have to pay water bills in order to
ensure that they are able to recycle waste water and provide the water that we need for living,
leisure, industry and farming. In third world countries access to clean water is not always easy
and therefore aid agencies are working on ensuring that people have the clean water that they
need to live and carry out essential activities for life. If we waste too much water then it will have a
detrimental effect on the environment.

Question
Should the high street be closed to traffic?
Expert
Teacher
Answer
This issue is hotly debated. Some people think that there are many benefits to doing this. For
example, it creates a safer environment. It helps to reduce noise and air pollution. It frees up land
within the city centre, which is in short supply. It may mean open areas or green spaces can be
created, making the city a more pleasant place. Other people say there are drawbacks to doing
this. The city may become inaccessible to certain groups of people, e.g. mothers with children
and the elderly. It may be difficult for lorries to make deliveries to premises. Shops may lose
customers as they are tempted to go to out-of-city shopping centres, where they are able to park
nearby and everything can be found under one roof.

KS2 Geography 14: Investigating rivers
Peer Assessment Question and Expert Answer
Question
Describe the main parts of a river.
Expert
Teacher
Answer
A river begins at its source which could be a spring from the hillside. It flows downhill as a small
stream and may be joined by other streams called tributaries. It continues downhill eroding its
banks, producing a v-shaped valley and sometimes forming rapids or waterfalls. Over a long
period of time it could erode a v-shaped valley. The river slows down as it falls less steeply and
begins to deposit the material it has eroded. It also begins to meander, and to form flood plains.
At the end of its journey it can flow into the sea forming an estuary or a delta. Where the river
ends is called its mouth.

Question
How are mountain environments different from other regions?
Expert
Teacher
Answer
Mountain environments are high places and this has an effect on the people who live there.
Transport is difficult in mountain regions. There are different types of animals that live in mountain
regions and the plants are different too. Mountains are popular with tourists, especially for skiing,
walking and climbing. Care must be taken to protect the mountain environment from damage by
erosion. The weather can be a lot worse than in valleys. There is often a lot of rain or snow in
mountain regions and this water can be used to produce renewable power in the form of hydroelectricity.

KS2 Geography 18: Connecting ourselves to the world
Peer Assessment Question and Expert Answer
Question
How can we make connections with people and what kind of things can we find out?
Expert
Teacher
Answer
We can still make connections with other people by talking to them face to face or on the
telephone and find out information by using the radio and television. We can also use technology
such as mobile phones, fax machines and email to send and receive information. We can find out
about similarities and differences between places - what the climate and the land is like, as well
as how people live. Visiting other places and meeting people is a great way to make connections.
It has become a lot easier to travel to many different places. It can still take many hours to travel
by plane and the distance we travel may mean that people are having a different time of day to
what we expect. However, the choice of places to go to is now so wide that we can get to virtually
anywhere we want.

People use a variety of methods to improve traffic problems such as writing letters to councillors

road improvements such as by-passes, often damage the environment so not everyone agrees

KS2 Geography 21: How can we improve the area we can see from our

Peer Assessment Question and Expert Answer
Question
What do you think the countryside will be like in 25 years time?
Expert
Teacher
Answer
Many urban areas may have grown and taken over the countryside. Villages may become
merged with nearby towns and cities. These villages may lose their character and individuality as
a result. There may also suffer from a loss of community spirit. In addition, local people may be
priced out of the market as more and more outsiders buy second homes in rural areas. In such
villages, there may be a growth of services. Nevertheless, some villages may suffer from a
decline in services as people are tempted to move out, because the environment around them is
no longer attractive (former mining activities may have scarred the landscape, for example).
Some villages may remain the same as the Government and organisations, like the Countryside
Alliance, may oppose any change or restrict development.

KS2 Geography 22: A contrasting locality overseas - Tocuaro
Peer Assessment Question and Expert Answer
Question
How is Mexico different to that in the UK?
Expert
Teacher
Answer
There are many differences that can be observed. For example, Mexico has a larger land area
and higher population than the UK. In Mexico, fewer people live in towns and cities (urban areas)
than in the UK. Life expectancy (the average number of years a person is expected to live) is
lower and infant mortality rates (the number of children dying before the age of a year) are higher
in Mexico than in the UK due to less advanced medical care. Spanish is the official language and
there are also 62 living languages in Mexico today, unlike in the UK, where English is widely
spoken. Although children in towns and cities in Mexico have the chance to pursue their
education, this is not often the case in rural areas, where boys and girls are frequently expected
to work on the land to help support their families. In the UK, schooling is compulsory from the age
of five to sixteen years. In Mexican villages, houses are often simple, with up to ten familiy
members per household. In the UK, dwellings are of a more permanent nature and lived in by
fewer people.
