In late November, MPs voted to effectively end the “beer-tie” –the system that requires publicans leasing their business from a pub company (previously “the brewery”) to buy their beer and other drinks from their landlords. This has long been a source of contention due to prices often being higher than those available on the open market. The new Clause 2 will give lessees the chance to opt out of the tie in favour of a market-rent-only lease or tenancy. There are implications, of course, and as it’s unchartered territory for a lot of our pubs, it could be a good thing or a disaster. We have to say, however, that anything that increases customer choice and frees publicans from pubco “shackles” has got to be a positive move. This month we find out who is for and who is agin – plus we offer a heartfelt story from a pub owner bearing his soul. This is also the time of year when brewers go a bit bonkers with their festive ales, introducing big flavoursome numbers that rival Christmas puddings for fruit, nut and mixed-spice sensations. And in this packed issue we bring you whisky, award-winners, innovation and all the pub and brewery news that you’d ever want to consume in one month. Delicious. Have a great festive season. Alastair Gilmour Editor, Cheers North East CONTENTS 22 He’s written more wine books than anybody else and travelled the world in search of the grape, but Oz Clarke knows a thing or two about beer. We picked up with him at the new St Mary’s Inn at Stannington, Northumberland, where Allendale, Wylam and Anarchy breweries – all from Northumberland – gave him a chance to test his palate. He passed with flying colours, as did our three champions, and on the way it gave a wine guru an insight into what we have here – a vibrant, progressive pub and beer industry. Swedish Blonde is named in honour of the brewery’s very own Swedish blonde – Anna Goransdotter-Bell. Maxim Brewery director Mark Anderson reports that the Houghton le Spring business has had a very busy year with its cask and bottled beers – and in particular he is pleased with the continued success of Swedish A FESTIVE ADVENTURE Mithril Ales brewery’s Aldbrough St John, Darlingon December’s “specials” are yet another treat in store. Chase The Pud (3.9% abv) is a pale ale brewed specially for Richmond’s annual charity Santa Race. Stuck Up The Chimney (3.9% abv) is an amber Christmas beer, while you can see 2015 in with the golden Hoppy New Year (3.8% abv). Finally, relax with Twelfth Night Blonde (3.7% abv). CLOTHED IN RUM AND CHOCOLATE The latest addition to Wylam Brewery’s craft beer revolution is Flannel Hammer (7.5% abv), a robust, full-bodied and rich extra-stout. Originally developed by brewery co-founder, the late Robin Leighton, it’s full of warming rum, tobacco and chocolate notes. Perfect for cold December and January evenings, Flannel Hammer is unleashed on December 8 in 50-litre kegs and 9-gallon casks. The Wylam website describes it best: “Not for the faint of heart, a few of these and you’ll be absolutely flannelled. Hammered. You know what we’re saying.” STRICTLY COME DAMSON Two beers aged in oak casks, a Christmas ale, and a damson stout are the latest beers released in bottle from Hawkshead Brewery. All packaged in Hawkshead’s inhouse bottling plant, they join other limited edition beers Sundown and Wild Wheat in the brewery’s lineup for Christmas. No3 Imperial Damson Porter (9.5% abv) and No4 Brodie’s Prime Export Aged (8.5% abv) are strong, dark beers matured in bourbon casks for 12 months. The ruby red, malty and spicy Jingle Fells (4.5% abv), is available in bottle for the first time. Also at 4.5% abv is Hawkshead’s unique fruit beer Damson Stout, made with fruit from the neighbouring Lyth Valley in The Lake District. ANNIVERSARIES CAMERON QUICK AND FAST Canny observers will have noticed that Camerons has been developing its range in recent months – with an emphasis on what the curious drinker wants to sample. The Hartlepoolbased brewery has also been concentrating on bar presentation with some outstanding pumpclip designs, some of them with a tactile element. For instance, A-hop-alypseNow (4.3% abv), the citrus-infused February special will include US Army-style dogtags (“touch me”), while the train image on its Portobello Brewery collaboration, Northern Line Stout (4.4% abv), has illuminated lights. Fridge Magnet Ale (4.5% abv) is another clever one with its name made up of magnetic letters for anagram experts to arrange to their heart’s content. Next year sees Camerons celebrate 150 years of beer production, so look out for the likes of Camerons 150 (5.0% abv), an anniversary red ale specially developed from the legendary Strongarm, the flagship beer that offers a classic alternative to golden, hoppy ales. Camerons’ head brewer Martin Dutoy has been listening to Head of Steam pub managers and reacted enthusiastically to their advice, beer knowledge and front-line experience. While Martin is one of the nation’s most respected brewers, he can’t operate in a vacuum and be unaware of barroom demands. The pub managers told him what sort of thing their customers are looking for, how their taste profiles are changing – everything to beer colour and bitterness levels. The two main brews coming out of discussions are Shotgun Wedding American Pale Ale and Thirst Blood, an American red rye beer. Since its refurbishment in 1994, The Tyne has provided a civilised blend of wonderful beer, great music, innovative food and excellent coffee. The year 1994 was also known for Schindler’s List’s seven Oscars, Kurt Cobaine’s death, and George Foreman being the oldest heavyweight world champion (at the age of 45). Gold SIBA chairman Guy Sheppard, left, presents Wylam Brewery’s Dave Stone, centre, and Matt Boyle with their trophy for Haxan Black Wit BLACK WIT IS SERIOUS FUN A Northumberland beer described as “wheaty, tawny with luscious dark malts… fresh limes, cassia bark and cloves” has won gold at the SIBA North Craft Beer in Keg competition. Wylam Haxan Black Wit (6.2% abv) came out top in the speciality beers category. The brewery’s business development manager Matt Boyle says: “It’s lovely to be able to make the type of beer you want to drink yourself and then for others to applaud it. We’re not looking for applause, but it does feel good when it comes along. We’re making proper beer as we’ve always done – and long may that continue.” Have you ever wondered how Scottish pubs celebrate the festive season. Obviously Hogmanay is the climax of a few weeks’ events, so here’s what Cheers Café Bar & Tavern in Fraserburgh, Aberdeenshire, is getting up to. Pub owner Dennis Forsyth says: “We’ve got two party weekends on December 12-13 and 19-20, a Ladies Night with ‘buff butlers’ and a drag queen, plus an Intoxicating Tea Party and a Gents Evening. We’ll have 400 in for Hogmanay with a live band in the main bar, a disco in the conservatory, and karaoke in the snug bar. We’ve also got a piper and drummer to bring in the New Year and will be open till 3am.” YOU CAN TAKE A NORSE TO BEER Cumbria’s Hawkshead Brewery was one of five from the UK to be featured at an innovative Norwegian craft beer festival. What’s Brewing, a two-day, sellout festival held in Stavanger – the country’s “oil capital” – featured 218 beers from 28 European and American craft breweries in the town’s old Pilsner brewery, Tou Scene. Hawkshead exhibited eight beers, including Wild Wheat (fermented by wild yeast), Oat Wine (aged in cider brandy casks) and Green Juniper & Hemp Double IPA. It was supposed to be “the war to end all wars” except it wasn’t. And it wasn’t all over by Christmas, either. So, at the end of 2014, let’s take another look at how North East brewers have collaborated and supported good causes. North Shields-based Three Kings Brewery was commissioned to produce a commemorative beer – Tyneside Tommy (4.1% abv) – in cask ale and in bottle 8 / CHEERS / www.cheersnortheast.co.uk form, by the Tynemouth World War One Commemorative Project with all proceeds generously going to fund the continuing work of this fine initiative (www. tynemouthworldwarone. org). A 52-page book, The Response, written by Alan Fidler and Ruth Chittenden, is a review of the region’s commitment to World War One, specially packaged with two bottles of Tyneside Tommy as the perfect Christmas gift for granddad – only £10 from selected outlets. The Stables Brewery, based at Beamish Hall, County Durham, has War family Ray Bailey from The Stables Brewery with grandfather Bob’s picture brewed Somme Ale (4.0% abv), a golden bitter made with Munich malt and traditional English Fuggles hops. Ten pence from every pint sold is being donated to the Poppy Appeal. The commemorative beer was inspired by brewery assistant Ray Bailey’s grandfather Robert (“Bob”) Bailey, who served in the Royal Naval Reserve (actually an infantry division) at Gallipoli where the allies suffered huge losses, and at Ypres. “He was injured four times,” says Ray. “He was gassed three times and was also shot in the shoulder by a sniper.” A new Beer & Battlefield Tours series has been announced in Flanders, Belgium. Belgian Beer Tours has introduced two new itineraries starting from Ypres, the scene of one of World War One’s bloodiest conflicts. Hops & Poppies is a discovery of the battlefields around Ypres and links to the hop fields near Poperinge and the production of beer in the same area. Trenches & Trappists investigates the trenches of the Northern salient and also provides the opportunity to try Trappist beer from Westvleteren with a visit to other “eccentric” brewers. THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS HADRIAN BORDER BREWERY Hadrian Border Brewery would like to wish all of our loyal customers and drinkers a very Happy Christmas, and a great New Year for 2015. We asked a selection of North East businesses how their year has been and how they’re preparing for 2015. It all seems very encouraging THE AIRPORT PUB THE BEER HOUSE You’ll have had to show your passport to get anywhere near The Beer House – and possibly remove your belt. The pub is part of a £14m airside investment at Newcastle International Airport by catering services company SSI. The Beer House and Flying Hippo both feature Tyne Bank Brewery beers with an enviable selection of draught and bottled beers that include Meantime London Stout, Kozel and Pilsner Urquell. Food is “hand-held”, drizzled in local provenance, highlighted by THE WETHERSPOONS PUB THE LEAPING SALMON pulled pork and roast beef “proper stotties”. “It’s been brilliant, says SSI operations manager Steven Wafer. “Brilliant. Everything’s going very well and we’re getting good feedback from customers. The real ale sales have gone very well since we’ve opened and Tyne Bank Brewery gets a great profile here. I reckon we’ve sold 1,400 gallons of beer since we opened in March. Next year we hope to have more local ones available with some seasonals. When we set up The Beer House we made sure the cellar was close by and there was plenty of stillage – you’ve got to start off understanding what you want.” orderly and polite Berwick folk are when it comes to queuing for food This JD Wetherspoon outlet is by and drink. Only the finest of malts and rye are used with carefully selected hop combinations. “Hopfully” a winner. In January, as a sort of ‘detox’ we will brew the old Border Brewery recipe - Gladiator @ 3.8%. This was an old favourite of many drinkers, so look out for its return as the monthly special. And so with the food – The Rat’s fiercely local network of suppliers gives chef Phil Mason a head start (as if he needed one). Phil’s other half, Karen Errington, says: “We’ve had a great year, in fact we’ve increased business every year in the seven years we’ve been here. A lot of it is down to our reputation locally which helps particularly where we’re situated. Food is a big part of the pub – trade is consistent and we have a very good lunchtime custom. “This summer we introduced live music outside which was very successful and we’ll be doing that again. We’ve also just had a Christmas craft weekend in the pub which was really busy and that’s a definite for next year. “But the food is the key and it also helps us keep up to six ales on the bar – we sell loads mainly from local brewers, which our customers like. But it’s a tiny bar and I’m not sure we could do that without a great menu.” THE CITY PUB DATBAR, NEWCASTLE Evangelist Aldo De Giorgi in dAtbAr An emphasis on craft keg beers and great value wines in an ultra-stylish setting with a dash of panache, that’s the ingredients of dAtbAr. Aldo De Giorgi, a longtime operator with his family of high-profile bars, cafes and restaurants in Newcastle – think Popolo, Alvino’s, Secco, Don Vito’s, Intermezzo, Nine Bar, Pasqualino’s etc – is a craft beer evangelist. “It’s been very good since we opened last March,” he says. “The best thing we did was open the space up instead of people thinking it was for theatre-goers only. We still have a terrific relationship with the Theatre Royal but we want dAtbAr to be like our manager Joel Darby’s house; that’s the way we look at it. The service element is always very, very important. The key people in our organisation are stable and very happy and are influential in the direction of the company, responsible for dealing with brewers and merchants. “There’s no denying things have been been tough, but we’ve been in this business for 38 years and there are lots of great new things happening in the town – Lola Jeans, for example, has opened just along the street. We need that quality of support around us, like Pleased To Meet You and Lady Grey’s too. Grey Street has breathed life back into the city centre, it’s a huge improvement. Informal dining has taken off – the formal restaurant is dead. Where do you go for the best food these days – you go to the pub. Quality value is what we do very, very well. We’ve been breaking records every weekend, particularly recently – for example, we did 400 meals one Saturday in a space that holds about 50 people at a time.” Starters FAN OF HONEYDEW MELON (v) SERVED WITH WINTER BERRY COULIS AND BECKLEBERRYS CHAMPAGNE SORBET PRAWN COCKTAIL SALAD WITH AVOCADO ANO LIME, AND A GENEROUS HELPING OF MARIE ROSE SAUCE SWEET POTATO AND SAGE SOUP (V) SERVED PIPING HOT WITH CRUSTY BREAD AND BUTTER SALMON TERRINE WITH A TARRAGON SAUCE SERVED WITH CRUSTY BREAD AND A SIDE GARNISH CHICKEN AND CHORIZO SKEWERS SERVED ON A BED OF SALAD ACCOMPANIED BY SWEET CHILLI DIPS Mains TRADITIONAL CHRISTMAS TURKEY DINNER SERVED WITH CRANBERRY SAUSAGE STUFFING AND CHIPOLATA SAUSAGES SUCCULENT CARVED ROAST BEEF WITH FRESHLY MADE YORKSHIRE PUDDING AND REAL GRAVY SEASONAL NUT ROAST (v) WRAPPED IN SAVOY CABBAGE LEAVES, AND SERVED WITH RED CURRANT STUFFING SEARED SALMON FILLET ON CRUSHED NEW POTATOES, WITH GREEN BEANS AND A CAPER, PARSLEY AND LEMON BUTTER 2014 CHRISTMAS AT THE KEELMAN 1 - 31 DECEMBER ST ST EXCLUDING CHRISTMAS DAY GRANGE ROAD, NEWBURN - TEL: 0191 267 1689 Dessert £16.95 PER PE R SON BOOK TABLE YOUR TODAY COOKIE CRUSTED BANOFFEE CHEESCAKE TRADITIONAL CHRISTMAS PUDDING SERVED WITH A DELICIOUS WHITE SAUCE SERVED WITH CLOTTED CREAM BELGIAN CHOC, CARAMEL AND BROWNIE STACK SERVED WITH CREAMY DODDINGTONS VANILLA ICE CREAM. THE MICRO DURHAM BREWERY THE REFURB MARQUIS OF GRANBY One of the region’s most accomplished microbreweries, Durham celebrated a significant anniversary earlier this year – 20 years from modest beginnings to high quality, streamlined production and a far-reaching reputation. Former music teachers Steve and Christine Gibbs set up their enterprise in 1994, quickly becoming pioneers of the modern light, hoppy style. The White Range – explorations of myriad hop varieties over a pale malt base – became the Durham signature and still forms the basis of many of the expressions it continues to produce. Magnificent stouts followed, then wheat beers long before they became fashionable in the UK, and Bavarian lagerbiers influenced heavily by the Gibbs’ regular trips to Germany. Durham beers hold their interest from first sip to final gulp, with a touch of complexity that gives the curious and discerning drinker something to mull over. And it looks like year number 21 will keep the ball rolling. The Marquis of Granby at Sunniside, Gateshead, is one of those pubs most of us have whizzed past on the A692 and commented – “next time”. The stone-built pub (with the advantage of a huge car park) reopened during 2014 following an extensive refit by the Heinekenowned Stars Pubs & Bars group. It’s large, spacious and openplanned with an obvious emphasis on food – a speciality being Hot Rock Grill (steak served on a slice of hot volcanic lava, so you can sizzle it yourself to exactly how you want it cooked). An extensive range of pizzas and pasta dishes take up most of the menu with a “comfort list” of old favourites such as minced beef and dumplings. The Marquis has always had huge potential and its latest incarnation is going a long way to realising that. Beers lean heavily on the Heineken list but owner David Bennison is keen to listen to what his local customers want. Faith? Hope? Luck? Love? All four in equal measure would do for a start, so it’s just as well that more than 30 four-leaf clover stone carvings representing the maxims can be found on the walls of The Lakes Distillery, which is gearing up for its first production run this month. The Lakes Distillery – backed by North East enterprise, entrepreneurs and enthusiasm – sits by the River Derwent in Cumbria, right on the edge of Bassenthwaite Lake in the Lake District National Park. Cumbria is remote, wet and beautiful, therefore is ideal whisky-producing country. Water – the vital ingredient – is drawn from the river which springs from Sprinkling Tarn, high in the fells, then makes its way to the valley through the peaty foothills of Scafell Pike, England’s highest mountain. Single malt whisky production is due to start this month and the final dram is expected to be much like 12-Dipton Mill ad:Layout 1 12/9/12 10:17 Highland malts which tend to be light and golden with a floral softness of character, a sweet nature with a rounded, lightly peated body. First production will be ready from 2017. The Lakes Distillery is already at the cutting edge of whisky making and not only are the copper pot stills designed to an exclusive pattern it will be the first UK distillery (there are now five in England) to use copper and stainless steel vessels together in the process which will develop a malt with greater character and depth. The experienced team behind The Lakes Distillery includes managing director Paul Currie who co-founded the Arran Distillery in 1995; master distiller Chris Anderson who has more than 30 years’ experience, and Alan Rutherford, a former production director at Diageo. The North East contingent (with offices in Gosforth, Newcastle) includes Brian Jobling, chairman of Eutechnyx, the Gateshead-based world-leader in games technology; Nigel Mills, chairman of the Entrepreneurs Forum. Renowned chef Terry Laybourne is orchestrating the distillery bistro. The tourism potential in the distillery’s stonebuilt former barns and cowsheds is enormous with a shop, bistro and bar running alongside. *Find out more and about The One whisky, the exclusive Founders’ Club and Connoisseurs’ Club at www.lakesdistillery.com Dipton Mill Inn THE ISIS A All you’d want a country pub to be... Alastair Gilmour looks at who’s for and who’s against In what was expected to be a run-of-the-mill Commons motion, MPs took a u-turn last month and voted in favour of a bill that will turn the pub industry on its head. In essence, publicans renting pubs from large “pubcos” will be able to opt out of the “beer tie” business model under which they often pay cheaper rents but are limited to purchasing beer supplies directly from landlords – almost always at much higher prices than anybody else is paying. The measure would apply only to companies with more than 500 pubs. The vote was a defeat for the Government, which had commissioned a study that estimated as many as 1,400 pubs may close and 7,000 jobs might be lost if the measure was passed. The Campaign For Real Ale (Camra) is delighted at the move; big pub-owing companies such as Enterprise Inns and Punch Taverns have voiced their anger, while SIBA (the Society of Independent Brewers) appears to be sitting on the fence. The consumer? Bring it on. Brigid Simmons, chief executive of the British Beer & Pubs Association (BBPA), said: “This change effectively breaks the beer tie which has served Britain’s unique pub industry well for nearly 400 years. It would hugely damage Reservations Only A 10% discount on all food for parties of 10 people of more. £2 deposit per preson payable at the time of booking thehastingsarms.com Barrasford Arms Restaurant & Country Pub with Rooms investment, jobs and result in more pubs closing.” Dear Ms Simmons, the world has changed in 400 years, in July 1614 (400 years ago) Ottoman forces attempted to conquer Malta but were beaten back by Crusaders. Crusaders are history, Ms Simmons, as is the Ottoman Empire – and so are feudal systems such as the beer tie. Punch Taverns issued a statement saying that “the Bill will have significant adverse consequences for Britain’s community pubs” and that “measures would be likely to have the effect of reducing pub investment, reducing customer choice and exposing tenants to higher fixed rents, reduced levels of support, and greater risk of failure”. So, a publican being allowed to buy beer and everything else on yon side of the counter from a free market is “reducing customer choice”? And campaigners backing the change have said if pubs pay less for their beer and rent then ultimately they will be able to charge their customers less. “Allowing over 13,000 pub tenants tied to the large pub companies the option of buying beer on the open market at competitive prices will help keep pubs open and ensure the cost of a pint to consumers remains affordable,” says Tim Page, Camra’s chief executive. Bob Stukins, Camra’s vicechairman, says: “Achieving this will help spell the end of pubco licensees being forced out of business through high rents and tied product prices.” But a contract with a pub company can be a brilliant avenue into the licensed trade. It can offer security; they give support and in many cases, it’s a business arrangement that suits everybody – particularly the customer. But here’s something from a publican from South Shields (although his pub isn’t there). It’s a well run pub with great beer, very good food and staff training and customer service setting high standards. The owner is happy to tell his side of the story, saying: “The reality is, over the last four years we have nearly gone bust three times, primarily because of the crippling rental costs and also the very high rateable value of the pub which is based on those same rental costs. “We are now starting the new rental agreement process which will cover the next three years. By their (Punch Taverns) calculations, the rent will increase from £58,000 to £61,000 as we have managed to increase our turnover and last year managed to virtually break even with a small operating profit. “We are obviously going to fight it as it’s grossly unfair. Our pubco business relationship manager has said that his boss put the rent in the low forties but in the end it’s not their decision. We have had to secure the services of a consultant at an additional cost to handle the negotiations as we can’t trust Punch to give us a fair hearing. “Punch’s rental evaluation person has again overstated the income and the profit that derives from it (the pub) while reducing the level of cost – wages, etc – to show a very healthy £120,000 profit, which obviously we would be very happy with, but the reality is the figures don’t show that. “Ours isn’t a new story but it’s one of the reasons that pubs are closing as well as losing good people from the industry, not to mention the financial damage it causes to publicans.” Mark Anderson of Maxim Brewery issues a note of caution – politicians should keep out of the licensed trade altogether, for a start. “Since 1989, successive governments have meddled with breweries and pubs,” he says. “Why they think they can cure all is beyond me and why not include all tied pubs (in the new measures), not just those bigger pubcos or pub-owning breweries? “The new, proposed option will in general lead to more pubs being worse off as a 20 / CHEERS / www.cheersnortheast.co.uk Pub & Restaurant GREAT SERVICE, A GREAT PINT On the corner of Newgate Street and CopperChare, The Black and Grey is under new management and Dean and Alyson promise to make your whole family welcome. Beer tie The bottom of the glass? pub company with two income streams of rent – say of £20,000 and beer tie of £15,000 – will combine these to a rent of £35,000 and offer no support. There is also the danger that an individual pub may not be able to buy beer as effectively as a large pubco. As with anything, there will be winners and osers. “Call me a cynic, but perhaps there is an election around the corner.” SIBA is not supportive of a free-of-tie option although the organisation that represents the vast majority of small, independent breweries across the nation concedes that the principles of reform are very welcome to ensure fair and lawful dealing. A statement reads: “We believe that the market for independent brewers’ beers would be significantly affected as the largest brewers may well respond by utilising soft loans to licensees to provide incentives to buy their products (and who could blame them). Clearly this could have disastrous consequences for the route to market for our members.” At the end of the day, it would appear that every organisation that puts a pint in front of a customer in a pub believes it’s right. Pubcos don’t want a free-of-tie option, Camra does. Politicians do, but SIBA says yes and no. Let’s try the new way and the people on the stools at the bar will soon let everyone involved know who’s right and who’s wrong. Nobody can argue with 400 years of bums on seats. The setting might suggest expensive wines and highend malt whiskies but it’s beer we’re swirling, sniffing and supping. Beer and savaloy dips – could it get more basic? A group of Northumberland brewers had been invited by Peter Candler from St Mary’s Inn, Stannington, to talk beer with award-winning wine guru Oz Clarke. Good beer is a cornerstone of the pub, along with an outstanding menu, and although it’s fitted and furnished to incredibly high standards it manages the trick of being unassuming and informal. The local beers – represented by Allendale, Anarchy and Wylam breweries – made the television presenter and prolific writer sit up and smile. He may have been the 2009 International Wine Challenge Personality of the Year, awarded mainly for the accuracy of his palate, but Wylam Sheer Chai tea beer appeared to take Oz by surprise. “That’s very nice,” he says. “Very nice. What’s really good for me from the aroma is the tannin. The palate is bone dry, but you get that green tea tannin coming out, that gentle leafy tea tannin, not like a black tea.” Tea beer then flows seamlessly to kippers, a subject Oz has a close affinity to. “My secretary comes from Seahouses,” he says, “and she’s always on to me about Swallow of Seahouses and Robsons from Craster – who’s is the best kippers.” Then we get back to the day’s main subject. Neil Thomas from Allendale Brewery is rightly proud of his Export Stout, a richly complex, fruity number that improves with age like a great wine (the current batch was brewed in October 2012). “There’s a real good movement in stouts and 22 / CHEERS / www.cheersnortheast.co.uk porters at the moment,” says Oz. “A few years ago porters were a bit like diluted Guinness, but I like the way this is an English stout style that’s not too sweet. You’ve got all the sweetness there for it to be a chocolate stout but with no ‘fat’ there at all. This is dangerously drinkable. “One of the things that’s happening now is a culture of people drinking beer in a smaller glass and sipping and enjoying and bringing in the Belgian culture rather than the English culture of ‘I’d better get this down me’.” Morpeth-based Anarchy first brewed in January 2012 and according to owner and brewer Simon Miles “it went off like a rocket”. One of the North East’s more experimental breweries, its mission appears to be pushing at as many boundaries as possible. Oz Clarke takes a liking to Smoke Bomb. “There’s a nice volatile lift from the yeast,” he says. “This is a fascinating beer with loads of acidity and slight fatness on the palate. It’s got a beautiful flavour and it doesn’t make you feel like it’s been dunked in bacon for a week. “There’s a lot of nice Belgian fruit going on there and the smoke isn’t saying ‘this is all I do’. I think it works very well.” With that leather-bound, tannin-rich voice, Oz Clarke is a man who could hold an audience all day and he recalls the time in the 1970s when he was an actor at the Young Vic, heading north to play the Edinburgh Festival. “I turned left at Morpeth,” he says. “Somewhere called Netherton – the Star Inn which was a Lorimer & Clark pub then and became Castle Eden. A lady walked in and said ‘I’ll get rid of the sheep and see you in a few minutes’. She walked over to the barrel and drew me pint of Lorimers & Clark off the wood. It was the most heavenly way to serve a pint of beer.” BEERS SAMPLED WYLAM BREWERY JAKEHEAD IPA (6.3% ABV) SHEER CHAI (3.6% ABV) TEA BEER ANARCHY BREWERY QUIET RIOT IPA (6.6% ABV) SMOKE BOMB (3.9% ABV) ALLENDALE BREWERY EXPORT STOUT (7.1% ABV) DOUBLE IPA (7.4% ABV) Before he turned to wine (and beer) full-time, Oz’s acting career saw him as General Peron in Evita in the early 1980s, as well as the first person to be arrested by Superman in the 1978 movie. He also appeared in Zulu with Michael Caine. Oz has written numerous award-winning books and has appeared on countless radio and television shows. More recently, he has made three successful BBC Two series with James May – Oz and James’s Big Wine Adventure in France and California, and Oz and James Drink to Britain – as well as two series with Hugh Dennis. He continues to work with May whenever he says they can think of something sufficiently silly to witter on about. In fact, the day after the St Mary’s Inn event the pair were due to meet to discuss a new project. At St Mary’s Inn though, we’re talking beer through savaloy dips, kippers and how underrated simple boiled potatoes are – which leads to a discussion on pairing beer with food. “Beer and food matching is never going to prove anything,” says Oz. “What is does though is gets people to drink good beer with good food. “So many pubs have to do half-decent food these days. Put some local beer in and some bread from the local baker and suddenly there’s a reason for this pub to survive. It’s your USP and people will come. “We potentially have the best beer culture in Europe. The Belgians, like the Germans, are slightly hamstrung by tradition and we are being far more innovative in this country.” And to demonstrate how impressed he had been by that innovation from Allendale, Anarchy and Wylam, he says: “The Australian shiraz drinker is panting to be allowed into your world of stouts and IPAs. www.cheersnortheast.co.uk / CHEERS / 23 NEWS TAKE A WALK AROUND THE LODGE A Tynemouth licensee has embedded a virtual tour of his pub on its website so customers can have a virtual walk around – and even inspect the well-kept cellar. Hugh Price of The Tynemouth Lodge says a Google Maps Business View tour would also be a good way of attracting new custom. “It’s just like a Street View,” he says. “We wanted to show off the pub’s ambience and the mystery that is a pub cellar – pubgoers can go ‘down the hatch’.” The interactive tour is produced and published by Adrian Don of 360DegreesNorth, a certified Google trusted photographer. BOOKING THE COOKS FOR CHARITY A Northumberland hotel has been included in a new e-book, The Great British Cook Book. A recipe for braised beef cheeks from Battlesteads at Wark features alongside those from Nigella Lawson and Rick Stein, so it’s a bit of a feather in head chef Eddie Shilton’s cap. Battlesteads is renowned for its food and ale as well as its award-winning hospitality and “green” credentials and 32 / CHEERS / www.cheersnortheast.co.uk the book is supporting Macmillan Cancer Support and Hospitality Action. Gary Allen, director of the Great British Cook Book project, said: “We’re hoping the whole of the UK will help us reach our goal of 20,000 downloads and have created a Download And Donate Day on December 19 to drive awareness of our campaign.” www.thegreatbritishcookbook.co.uk A tall tale of fracking and jam sandwiches has earned the landlord of the Lifeboat Inn in Maryport, Cumbria, the title of the World’s Biggest Liar 2014. George Kemp won the award for the third time after telling the story involving a vacuum cleaner, a wooden car and mining for jam. The annual event takes place at the Bridge Inn, Santon Bridge, where the trophy, medal and hamper of beer supplied by sponsors Jennings Brewery were presented by mayor of Copeland Eileen Eastwood. George said: “I have to listen to different stories every night in the pub so it’s no surprise that they’ve rubbed off on me.” www.cheersnortheast.co.uk / CHEERS / 33 PUBS TO VISIT PUBS TO VISIT THE BRIDGE TAVERN, NEWCASTLE It’s a complete transformation from virtually-derelict pub into a high quality venue in a unique location directly below the iconic Tyne Bridge, featuring a stainless steel and copper work-of-art microbrewery. The pub’s “innards” are exposed; the lengthy sculpted bar top is pewter; viewing panels highlight 86-year-old Tyne Bridge rivets; lampshades are original Bauhaus, and the bridge’s underbelly shelters an al fresco terrace. STAITH HOUSE, NORTH SHIELDS The Staith House (top right) is bright and welcoming, uses its space well, and is complemented by considerate use of reclaimed timber and brick. Ship’s portholes, a wheelhouse bell and other fittings have come from a scrapped vessel which envelop the pub in a sitespecific ambience. Quality ales and premium lagers are the core of the drinks side, while the kitchen team is developing a reputation for creativity and craftsmanship. TOURIST TRAPS Newcastle has been voted the UK’s favourite holiday city by The Guardian and Observer Travel Awards 2014. We all know what a great place it is to live around and to visit, but it’s nice all the same to be nationally recognised. Second was Bath with Edinburgh picking up third spot. The North East Travel Awards therefore has a particular significance for the winners of the best tourism pub category. The year-old Bridge Tavern in Newcastle took the title with runners-up being The Staith House on North Shields Fish Quay, and South Causey Inn, Stanley, County Durham. Congratulations to all – the Cheers advice is to take the tourist route and visit all three. The Bridge Tavern now goes on to the national VisitEngland Awards for Excellence being held at The Sage, Gateshead, in May 2015. The pub also came top in the Publicans Morning Advertiser Awards in the new pubs category earlier this year for the North and Scotland. “It’s a nice end to our first year,” says pub co-owner Dave Stone. “It’s great to win and it’s also great for all the people in the team and particularly for head chef Tony Renwick, manager Jack White, and brewer Joe Roberts. “The Craft Beer Calling event we organised last month was also a huge success and we can all bulid on that for the future.” Flying start Bridge Tavern has had a terrific first year SOUTH CAUSEY INN, STANLEY The extensive (and immaculate) grounds are full of the sound of chickens, sheep, horses, a donkey, alpacas, geese and piglets. But there’s plenty for grown-ups too. Four bars – one with a huge stone fireplace – feature several local ales in very good order. Lounges and a restaurant are popular with social groups while corporate events and family occasions – some 200 weddings this year alone – are in high demand. Tel: 07580 004 565 (www.threekingsbrewery.co.uk). Set up in 2012 as a 2.5-barrel brewery, quickly expanded into five-barrel (180 gallons) production, and has never looked back. A small core of well balanced beers is supplemented by an ever-more experimental range. C M Y CM MY CY CMY K Kings on the road An impressive arrangement of brewing vessels makes up a five-barrel plant with four fermenters/conditioning tanks which allow production to “round” nicely. Three Kings was set up twoand-a-half years ago by Ewan McCann, above,, a former account executive and partner in a design and marketing company. Customers are mainly local – The Trent House, Bodega, Fitzgerald’s, Lady Grey’s in Newcastle and the Low Lights Tavern in North Shields – but regular orders from the likes of The Quaker House in Darlington are spreading the word a bit further. Four pubs using Three Kings for their house beers (Low Lights and Oddfellows in North Shields; Rockcliffe Arms, Whitley Bay, and the Bridge Hotel in Newcastle) account for half of the brewery’s output, which puts it on a stable production footing. Ewan has also been a driver of the beer-from-the-wood movement in the region – a hefty investment in oak casks is giving the beers a high profile as well as attracting curious drinkers. He says: “Wood takes a lot of looking after but it’s really worth it.” NON-BEERY THINGS Three Kings is named after the trio of Northumbrian monarchs who were buried at Tynemouth Priory (but later exhumed) – Oswin, King of Deira; Osred, King of Northumbria, and Malcolm III of Scotland. North Tyneside Council uses three crowns in its coat of arms. 36 / CHEERS / www.cheersnortheast.co.uk THE BEER Billy Mill Ale (4.0% abv) is a golden bitter and a classic session beer with light malt and fruity, slightly spicy hop notes. Ring of Fire (4.5% abv) is a well-balanced American Pale Ale with a crumb or two of biscuit malt and citrus fruit core. Silver Darling (5.6% abv) is a hop-infused Pale Ale with fruit and spice on the palate and an almost scented aroma. Apache American Pale Ale (5.0% abv) is brewed with three US-sourced hops which give it a grapefruit-tinged aroma and peppery bitter flavour. www.cheersnortheast.co.uk / CHEERS / 37 FUN STUFF SIGN OF THE TIMES THE DIRTY DOZEN TWELVE QUESTIONS TO TEST YOUR KNOWLEDGE 1 What do Australians call a long, narrow lake? 2 How many square inches are there in a square foot? 3 Large White, Chester White and Landrace are all varieties of what? 4 What is Jamaica’s leading export? 5 A slow worm is not a worm but a what? 6 What is the fastest two-legged creature? The app contains more than 75 weird and wonderful stories from the city over the past 800 years – several of them centred on pubs – that will entertain and enlighten visitors and locals alike. The stories run from the 13th Century to President Jimmy Carter’s visit in 1977.
