Torch relay feature - Southwark Life (Summer 2012)
Come on Southwark See your local torchbearers carry the Olympic Flame the day before the Games start W I t will travel 8,000 miles across Britain before it makes its way to the Olympic Stadium on 27 July. It will also be carried by 8,000 torchbearers in two months and go through 470 local authority areas. On 26 July, Southwark is fortunate enough to host the Olympic Flame as it travels across the Millennium Bridge, past Shakespeare’s Globe, down to Bricklayers Arms, and then the Old Kent Road before the convoy stop for lunch at Harris Academy in Peckham before continuing on through Camberwell. Fun facts about the Olympic torch • Its triangular shape signifies the three times London has hosted the Games – 1908, 1948, 2012. • It was designed by BarberOsgerby in Hackney and is made out of aluminium making it the lightest torch ever made. • The flame is able to withstand an altitude of 4,500 ft above sea level. • The torch is 80cm in height, weighs 1 kilo and burns for at least 10 minutes. • The average distance someone will carry the torch is 300 metres. 10 The torch will be carried by 15 torchbearers who were nominated because of their significant contributions to communities throughout the world and sports. They are: Xiemar Lopez, Ifeyinwa Egesi, Adam Grodecki, Frank Fredericks, Nawal El Moutawakel, Dom Goggins, Lisa Woodman, Richard Reynolds, Rachael Sillars, Ahmed Jalloh, Sharon Coleman, Timothy Denyer, Dong Tran, Sterling Muschet and Kevin Steward. You can find the torch relay route on the next page by visiting our website where you will also find videos of our torchbearers telling their story and explaining why it’s an honour that they were nominated. www.southwark.gov.uk/London2012 Nawal El Moutawakel Nawal will be carrying the torch through Southwark.
