CHILD SAFETY:
Every year we read or hear about children drowning in a pool or a child being left in a car unattended. Here is some information to help
your child to have a safe summer.
Pool Safety:
Children should stay within arm’s reach at all times in and around the pool / Assign an adult to watch the children as they swim / Make sure
this person knows how to swim / Put an alarm around your pool / Fence your pool / Learn CPR Never leave your child in a pool alone.
Car Safety:
Never leave children unattended in a vehicle / Never let your children play in an unattended vehicle / Make a habit of looking in the vehicle
before you get out / If your infant or young child travels in a rear-facing car seat or the back seat, keep a reminder for you in the front seat,
for example, a stuffed animal / Always lock the doors and keep any keys out of reach from children / If you see a child left alone in a hot
vehicle, call the police. If they appear in distress, don’t hesitate, get them out as quickly as possible, cool the child rapidly and call 911or
your local emergency number.
ANIMAL CONTROL:
It’s that time of the year tick season. Prevention: Purchase a tick collar; take your dog to a chemical dipping location, treat your home with
a pesticide application. Currently we are out of tick collars, we have granules available. The Nation Health Department was contacted and
they stated the free collars and granules were a onetime deal. Animal Crusaders provide a monthly tick dip on the third Sunday of each
month from 11 am to 1 pm. at the dance hall. 798-6569

Environmental: Last month the department held the annual Bulky Waste Collection in the community. There were approximately 130
homes that participated in the collection. Thanks to everyone who participated in this event to keep the community clean. Thanks to all the
community workers and to the TON Solid Waste Program workers for assisting in the collection event.
The staff sends their prayers and thoughts to all the families who have lost a loved one in the past month, May the Creator be with you
during this time.

April 2, 2015- Easter outing at the hick-dan park, for the congregate and homebound clients.
April 9, 2015-some of our clients attended the Eagle Ceremony Blessing at the ceremonial grounds
April 10, 2015- Both chair-volleyball teams competed in the tournament in Laveen, Arizona.
April 13, 2015- Representatives Irene Begay and
Eleanor Hunter will be attending the Elderly Advisory Council meeting in San Lucy.
April 16, 2015- Jose and Joe Enriquez will be at the congregate on their cultural presentation.
April 20, 2015- The co-op farm will do a planting demonstration for the congregate. Also Sara Williams & David Garcia will present
their campaign for the Tohono O’odham Chairperson and Vice Chairman
April 23, 2015- Elders will visit the church on renovations to the Baptismal area.
April 27, 2015- Visitors from New Zeeland will be at the congregate to visit with the elders.
We have two openings in our department; please see the Human Resources Department for details.
We are still recruiting for community members that are 55 years of age or older and “special needs” individual (s) to join our

The Probate staff are at San Xavier district office, the 1st
Wednesday of each month, from 9:00am to 3:00pm.
The staff are available to answer any questions you may have
regarding probate matters.
If you had a recent death in your family, please stop by and
find out if a probate is needed for the decedent.
If the decendent needs to be probated, the following documents ate needed for dedecent and his/her family:
1. original death certificate
2. Birth certificates for all.
3. Tribal enrollment documents for all.

2015 Summer Session
Scholarships are available for college level students for the
2015 Summer Session. Due date for submission of
application is Friday, May 8, 2015 at 3:00 p.m., with no
exceptions.
If you are a current recipient of our scholarships you must
submit documents such as grades/transcripts from the Spring
semester, itemized expenses for the summer session, letter of
progress/current goals/problems, schedule of classes and
proof of cost of tuition and books. Please refer to your files for
a complete check list.
First time applicants can stop by our office at 7765 S.
Comobabi Street or The San Xavier Education Center to pick
up an application.

A MESSAGE FROM…….. Sandra Alvarez, Education Administrator
The summer is approaching us fast! There will be many opportunities for you and your child this summer. Please stop by the
Education Center and sign up! May 8th is the deadline for K-5 Summer School Applications – Space is limited to 60 students.
Summer school will be held at Santa Clara Elementary from June 1st -June 19th from 7:30am-2pm, Parent Orientation May 28th at
6:00 pm. Call us for more information or stop by to pick up an application. We will also run a Middle School Program from June
22nd—July 6th. About 90% of a child’s brain develops before age 5. Please sign up your infant or toddler in one of our summer
programs! I am looking forward to working with the Summer Youth Workers. The Orientation is on May 30th at 9am.
We’ve been conducting a survey the past couple of months, and I will be publishing the results in next month’s newsletter. We will
be establishing many new programs, workshops, and clubs based on the results!
I’d like to thank the community for all your input, concerns, and suggestions for the Community Gathering we are planning in July.
The group started off small in February with concerns on gangs and evolved to a series of meetings to plan for gatherings to unite
the community and celebrate our culture and traditions. Like Rupert said, “Culture is our Prevention!”
Congratulations to all the students being promoted to the next grade level! Continue your educational journey. Remember
SUCCESS IS A JOURNEY, NOT A DESTINATION!

Now that school’s coming to an end, it’s a great time now to

Greetings Wa:k Community,
I hope you all had a wonderful April and are ready for the end of the school year. Only a few more weeks to go! I
just wanted to thank the After School Program and Voices of Our Youth kids for all your hard work and allowing me to work
with you all. For the VOY students, I hope this past year has opened your eyes and welcomed new experiences for your
educational goals. Parents, it has been a pleasure working with your kids and hope to continue working with them in the
future. Also, I would like to thank Santa Clara Elementary School and Sunnyside High School for allowing me the opportunity to work with our native students this school year. It was amazing to see how much they improved over the course of the
school year.
Make sure all your students are on track to move on to the next grade or are ready for graduation. Most schools
have student and parent portals you can access to monitor your child’s progress. Many of our educational or community
assistance programs require student grades so make sure you retain a copy for your records. Also, we will be wrapping up
our tutoring sessions soon so please contact us if you have any questions.
As summer approaches keep your children engaged. There are many programs out there for all age groups at the
Education Center, Recreation Center, Public Libraries and at some of the High Schools. Be on the lookout for flyers and
applications. Good Luck with the end of the school year and I look forward to seeing all the children during the summer.

The library has certainly been on an upswing. We currently
serve our Wa:k Community with Library time for the Elders, Infant/Toddlers, Daycare, Head Start and After School Programs.
S-ke:g Tas!
The year has flown by and we’re coming to a closure of another
successful school year. It has been a pleasure working with all
students who I have come across. I will definitely be missing the
ones who will be promoting to High School. I encourage you to
continue learning about our O’odham himdag. Remember our
lessons on the Boarding School era, and reflect on how far the
education system has come for Native people. Take advantage
of the free education! I wish you all much success!!!
Wa:k Community, if you are a babysitter or a parent at home we
would love to come to your house to provide library time for your
little ones. We will stay about 30 minutes, read, sing and play
with your children. Our home visit library times are on Wednesdays from 10:00-10:30 or 10:30-11:00. please call Gertie or
Therese for more information at 520-807-8621.
We will also begin taking applications for our Summer
Infant/Toddler Program beginning on May 11th.

Now to welcome in the summer. Many people dread the summer
because of the heat. As far as I can remember… we’ve always
had HOT summers (a little sarcasm). During one summer I
came back from Santa Fe, NM to conduct my interviews for my
Senior Thesis. I interviewed about 8 elders from the community.
As I sat in each of their homes, I noticed that I was sweating
while asking questions and jotting down responses. I was
sweating because they all had their windows and doors open in
100 degree weather, this was with no surprise because many of
them had worked in areas where labor outside was the daily
routine. Also, many had gardens where they tended to plants as
needed, some still maintain gardens. As they enjoy the heat of
the sun, we all still need to remember that the sun is a strong
entity and it can sometimes cause dangers to those who are
vulnerable (elders and babies). Take care of one another as we
approach the toniabkam (summer), but enjoy it as well!

It’s hard to believe that the end of the school year is just around

the corner. This completes my fourth year at the San Xavier

Education Center, and I am amazed at how quickly this time has
gone by! I am grateful that I have been able to work in this community and look forward to, with much anticipation, the years that are to
come.
I would like to recognize the excellent effort our Voices of Our Youth students have put forth throughout this year, as well as the hard
work, and the support of their parents. I continue to be amazed with the youth interacting with one another, engaging in the learning
process, to visioning what their future will look like after graduating from high school.
As promised, here is group picture of 29 San Xavier District youth that attended the out-of-state college campus tour to Fort Lewis
College in Durango, Colorado on March 17-20, 2015. This was another wonderful experience for the youth! Not only did we visit Fort
Lewis College, we also had the opportunity to visit the Ute Mountain Tribal Park. Our tour guide, and Ute tribal member, Mr. Ricky
Hayes, provided us with Ute Indian history, Ute pictographs, Ute geological land formations to seeing surface sites (kivas), and exposed
ancient pottery. In addition, prior to heading back home, we also visited the Four Corners! For those who may not know, this is the only
place where in the US where 4 states intersect at one point: AZ, New Mexico, Colorado & Utah.
