My Town Meadow Lake City, pop. 5,045 (2011c) Meadow Lake’s Beginnings In 1799, Peter Fidler was who a fur trader, built the first log house in the area of Lac des Prairies. In English the name of the lake became “Meadow Lake”. Cyprien and Mary Morin, who were Métis, settled in the Meadow Lake area in 1879. They set up a Hudson’s Bay post and traded furs. They also raised horses and cattle. Other Métis families arrived to grow the community. Downtown Meadow Lake. This group became Flying Dust First Nation. In 1931, the railway arrived in Meadow Lake. In 1936, Meadow Lake became a town and in 2009 it became Saskatchewan’s 14th city. Natural Resources There is a forest industry around Meadow Lake. The nearby lakes are used for fishing and the land is farmed. Tourism has become an important resource for Meadow Lake. Tourists can camp, walk, canoe, fish or ski. ke? There are elementary and secondary schools. Meadow Lake has a medical clinic. There are also dentists and an optometrist. There are many RCMP officers in Meadow Lake. They are responsible for people’s safety. Leisure activities You can watch hockey games at the Meadow Lake rink. The Meadow Lake team is called the Meadow Lake Stampeders. There are several parks with children’s playgrounds. You can also play basketball and tennis. There is a swimming pool at the Meadow Lake Aquatic Centre. You can take swimming lessons there. Meadow Lake has a curling rink, a library, two movie theatres and a bowling alley. There is also a golf course. Did You Know… In the mid 1950s more grains were shipped out of Meadow Lake than any other Canadian rural town or city. -3-
