Some of these common misconceptions reduce the comfort of your home during cold months, while others can cost you energy dollars. Separate fact from fiction and start saving today. MYTH: Closing off unused rooms saves on heating/cooling costs. FACT: Keep interior doors open to give your forced-air system the airflow it needs to work efficiently. MYTH: Ceiling fans are only for summer months. FACT: To help circulate heat, run ceiling paddle fans on low, blowing up in the winter. MYTH: HVAC filters don’t need to be changed during winter months. FACT: HVAC filters should be changed monthly, all year long. Dirty filters reduce airflow, making your system work harder than necessary. MYTH: I’m leaving town for the holidays, so I won’t be using electricity at home. FACT: Plug items like coffeemakers, TVs, cable boxes, printers and hair dryers into a surge protector. When you leave, simply switch off the surge protector to truly stop the flow of electricity. MYTH: Landscaping doesn’t affect the comfort of my home. FACT: Evergreen shrubs on the north side of your home can provide a windbreak during winter months. MYTH: My decorating doesn’t have an impact on winter electric bills. FACT: Your window treatments can help you harness heat from the sun. Keep drapes open during the day to let in sunlight, and shut them at night to keep heat in your rooms. ENJOY YOUR DAY COBB GENEOLOGY MEETING EVIDENCE AND PROOF STANDARDS Robert “Bob” Sapp’s presentation is a summary of types of approaches used to establish a genealogical statement. Genealogists and researchers collect material called sources with the expectation that they contain evidence that will lead to a genealogical statement that provides the answers sought. Direct evidence is critical to attain these statements. Differentiating a specific person from several with the same name requires specific external knowledge and parallel known relationships. These types of approaches plus others are covered in Bob Sapp’s presentation to enable the participants an opportunity to establish their own genealogical statement. Bob Sapp is active in Piedmont’s Color Guard, Speakers Bureau and Youth programs, he principally speaks to elementary school students on causes of the Revolution and the Georgia signers of the Declaration of Independence Bob Sapp joined the Piedmont Chapter Sons of American Revolution (SAR) in February 1995. Bob also is a member of Clan McIntire Association, Descendants of Washington’s Army at Valley Forge, Computer Genealogical Society of Georgia, St. Andrews Society of Atlanta, Society of Colonial Wars. Bob is also a member of Association of Professional Genealogist, Georgia Genealogical Society, Cobb County Genealogical Society, Computer Genealogical Society of Georgia, Harrison (WV) Genealogical Society, and National Genealogical Society. The public is invited to Genealogy Society of Cobb County Georgia Monthly Meeting, Tuesday, October 25, 7:00 PM – 8:00 PM at First Presbyterian Church of Marietta, 189 Church Street, Marietta, 30060. Honesty and integrity should be a part of everyone’s standard business practices. The fact that not all tax preparers follow this statement is part of the reason you hear news stories about preparers who have filed hundreds of false returns to get illegitimate refunds, or some firms that have gotten shut down due to extreme inaccuracies in their clients’ tax returns. But that’s not a dilemma. That’s blatant tax fraud. The dilemma I’m writing about is when a tax preparer is trying to follow the tax laws, but the CLIENT wants to “push the envelope.” As a tax preparer, I frequently have to tell a client that the expense they want to deduct isn’t a valid business expense. Generally, the client accepts my advice, though sometimes with a little grumbling. The real dilemma is when I have to make a choice between claiming an expense on the client’s return that I know the IRS would disallow, or losing the client. A few months ago our firm was faced with this dilemma. The client wanted to deduct a personal vehicle as a business expense. We said no. The client wanted us to be “cautiously aggressive.” But, to us, this request went well beyond being cautious. So, the client had someone else file his tax returns. Why couldn’t we be flexible in this matter? Bend the rules a little? The answer is that we want to maintain our honesty and integrity with all of our clients’ tax returns. We want each client to be able to justify to the IRS every expense taken on the return, should he get audited. We want to make sure neither the client nor our office is susceptible to IRS penalties for filing fraudulent information. We look for ways for our clients to save on their taxes. Reducing taxes while staying within the law is tax avoidance, which is what any good preparer should do for their clients. Claiming a personal expense as a business deduction is tax evasion! And that’s illegal. We were faced with the dilemma of doing what we knew to be right and losing a longstanding client or caving in to the pressure of the client wanting to decrease his income taxes. So, we lost the client. It still hurts. But we would make that same choice, again. For an appointment or more information call 770-499-0866. Public safety employees have taken an oath to protect and serve. They deserve our respect and appreciation throughout the year. But especially for this week, please say thanks to all our public safety personnel including law enforcement, emergency response, fire, 911, and military members. We honor them for their service and acknowledge the many great challenges they tackle on our behalf every day. Two SPLOST-funded transportation projects recently began downtown. The Stanley Road/Collins Road project will improve Stanley from Old 41 to the railroad tracks and Collins from Stanley to Barrett Pkwy. It will include improving the roadway, adding sidewalks, and creating a round-about at the intersection of Stanley and Collins. The Dallas Street/Watts Drive project will consist of improving Dallas from Watts to Main Street and Watts from Cobb Pkwy to Main. Roads will be realigned, sidewalks added a roundabout at the intersection of Dallas and Watts created. Either or both of these may cause some intermittent road closures; as we become aware of them, they will be posted on the city website under Road Condition Alerts. Thanks to everyone for supporting the Kennesaw Downtown Development Authority’s (KDDA) Farmers Market and Dinner at the Depot food truck rallies. They will continue operation this month, ending on October 24. Check the Dinner at the Depot Facebook page to see the food truck lineup. Football games, fairs, and festivals are all better with cooler days, It seems like we are never able to escape the phone scams. They just don’t go away. Unfortunately, there are way too many victims and we are dispatched to scam incidents way too often. Personally, I have received several on my city issued phone. Knowing they are a scam, I do find some enjoyment with challenging the caller to their scam. Unfortunately, many of the phone scammers are not in this country which makes it difficult for prosecution. Many times, the calls are designed to create fear. One of the most frequent phone scams in this area is the IRS collection calls. Some have been reported to ask the victim for iTunes card numbers. Here are some things to remember to avoid the IRS scam: The IRS will always send taxpayers a written notification of any tax due via the U.S. mail. The IRS never asks for credit card, debit card or prepaid card information over the telephone. For more information or to report a scam, go to www.irs.gov and type “scam” in the search box. If you get a phone call from someone claiming to be from the IRS, here’s what you should do: •If you know you owe taxes or you think you might owe taxes, call the IRS at 1.800.829.1040. The IRS employees at that line can help you with a payment issue, if there really is such an issue. •If you know you don’t owe taxes or have no reason to think that you owe any taxes (for example, you’ve never received a bill or the caller made some bogus threats as described above), then call and report the incident to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration at 1.800.366.4484. •You can file a complaint using the FTC Complaint Assistant; choose “Other” and then “Imposter Scams.” If the complaint involves someone impersonating the IRS, include the words “IRS Telephone Scam” in the notes. We know that scam successes only lay the platform for future opportunities and we don’t want you to be the next victim. -In Humble ServiceThought for the month: “A people that values its privileges above its principles soon loses both.” Dwight D. A cataract is a clouding of the eye’s natural lens. The eye has a lens similar in function to a camera lens, focusing light onto the retina and adjusting focus, allowing you to see far and near. The lens is made of proteins that are carefully aligned, making the lens clear. As we age, the proteins clump together, making the lens more and more cloudy. All people develop cataracts due to the aging process if they live long enough. However, exposure to UV light, smoking and diabetes can accelerate their formation. Cataracts can also develop as result of trauma, certain medications, and can also be present at birth. Those with cataracts generally experience a gradually increasing blurring of their vision. Symptoms also include glare when driving at night and fading of colors. Sometimes these changes happen so slowly that someone may not realize how much their vision has been affected. To diagnose cataracts, your eye doctor will perform an eye exam which includes dilating your eyes to evaluate the lens. With early cataracts, vision can often improve with a new glasses prescription. As the cataracts progress, surgery can remove the cloudy lens and replace it with an artificial lens. Cataract surgery is affecting your daily activiites, such as reading, watching television or driving. Your eye doctor will discuss when cataract surgery is right for you. Some of the most exciting progress in cataract surgery has been the development of advanced technology intraocular lenses, which help patients minimize dependence on glasses at various distances. Your eye doctor can discuss if you be a candidate for these technologies. Changing Your Medicare Policies Jerry Bohus Should you Change your Medicare health plan? If you are enrolled in a Medicare health plan, each year you will have a chance to review your coverage and make changes. Medicare Health Plans and Prescription Drug Plans can change their costs and coverage each year. Many insurance carriers offer Medicare products. Their monthly premiums, out of pocket expense, prescription drug formularies, cost-sharing co pays, and physician/hospital networks can change every year. And with these changes comes a lot of confusion each year! That’s where I come in. As an Independent Agent, I help guide you through the “Medicare information overload”! Here is how, as an “independent agent”, I can help you: I don’t represent one insurance carrier. This enables me to get to know and uncover exactly what your personal needs are, both medically and financially. I understand these plans. I can then cut through the clutter and place you in a plan that really fits your needs! If you were to ask “What is the best plan?” my answer would be “There is no best plan, only the best plan for you!” As an independent agent, I can assist you in finding the Medicare option that is best for you. You can reach me at 770.499.2040 or my office at 2655 Dallas Highway, Suite 130 (next to Target). Marietta, 30064. I look forward to getting together with you! As we all indulge in the season I wanted to share a few interesting facts about how pumpkin can improve your health. -1 cup of cooked mashed pumpkin contains more than 200% of your recommended daily intake of Vitamin A, which aids in vision. It also contains 3 grams of fiber and only 49 calories. A fiber rich diet helps you feel fuller longer, assisting in weight loss. -Pumpkin seeds are naturally rich in phytosterols that have been shown to reduce LDL or bad cholesterol. In addition to keeping the heart healthy, pumpkin seeds can also improve the mood. They are rich in the amino acid tryptophan which is important in the production of serotonin. Serotonin is a major player when it comes to the mood. -And of course, my favorite topic, the skin. Vitamins C & B, natural minerals, and Carotenoids in pumpkin help to fight acne, maintain collagen, reverse UV damage, brighten, and improve skin texture. Pumpkin is frequently used in skin care treatments and creams. Pinterest might even have a few ideas for DIY facial masques or scrubs. Bright Side page 8 How chiropractors can benefit your health! dr cris eaton welsh, eaton chiropractic Back and neck pain are the chief complaints for which patients seek chiropractic help. Through manual spinal manipulation, chiropractic care is a holistic therapy that focuses on maintaining healthy musculoskeletal and nervous systems to ensure overall wellness Effectiveness The research about chiropractic care is growing. According to the Annals of Internal Medicine, recent studies show that spinal manipulative therapy performed by a chiropractor, along with exercise, relieve neck pain more effectively than medication. Furthermore, the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics reported that an integrated approach to health care -- including chiropractic care -- results in a 51.8 percent reduction in pharmaceutical costs and 43 percent fewer hospital admissions. You should consider seeing a chiropractor if you experience frequent pain in your back, neck or joints, as well as headaches. This is especially so if intense soreness follows accidents, household chores or prolonged periods of poor posture. Back and neck pain Chiropractors are best known for safely and effectively treating acute back and neck pain, as well as headaches. Whereas a medical doctor might prescribe pain medicine, muscle relaxers or anti-inflammatory drugs, and an orthopedic doctor might suggest surgery, a chiropractor will treat your back problems by hand, through manipulation of the spine. Chiropractors bring the musculoskeletal structure into proper alignment. Chiropractors change the position of your body and apply pressure to particular points along the spine that are not properly aligned. This results in a popping noise similar to the one created when you crack your knuckles. The noise is created by a change in pressure in your joints as gas bubbles are released. By adjusting the spine with their hands at particular pressure points, chiropractors unblock nerve energy and allow it to flow better down your spin and throughout your entire body. Repeated visits can, over time, realign your spine to optimize overall health. The brain sends messages down the spinal cord and out through the nerves to the rest of your body. If certain nerves are squeezed by a twist in the spine, they won’t function as well as if they were straight. Chiropractic [care] allows the nerves to work at their most optimum ability, allowing the body to heal at its optimum ability. Treatment plan At WHI @ Eaton Chiropractic we seek to care for the whole person. We examine every patient, not only for the reason of their visit but also their level of health. After diagnosis, a chiropractor develops a treatment plan. We incorporate nutrition, exercise, ergonomic and lifestyle recommendations. The successful management of chronic conditions may require a combination of these major components. This holistic approach can reduce the need for potentially addictive pain medication or invasive surgery. DRY EYE IS EASILY TREATED! It was our goal to discover the best practices and how different owners had made their communities more like home, while still meeting the physical, social and medical needs of the seniors they served. We came away with many good ideas. But, the best idea we found was our own! It was to have our family care for your family. Not a big corporation that really doesn’t know much about you personally or your neighborhood. We thought about the things that we liked about our own homes, our own personal “comfort” zones; we also spoke with many seniors and asked about the things that were most important to them. It was then that our plan began to develop. From this, DayBreak Village Senior Living was born. Our family purchased the already on-going facility in 2005. Since then, we have totally remodeled the existing home and have turned it into a vibrant senior community! More importantly, we love what we do. We consider it an honor to care for the seniors in our community. We enjoy sharing their lives and becoming part of their family! Since DayBreak Village had been full with a waiting list for over two years, we decided that we needed a few more apartments. In 2009 we added 22 new apartments and suites and completely renovated and updated our home. With the growing need, in 2014 we finished another addition of 15 suites! We believe this is evidence that our residents love it here as much as we love having them here. We love meeting our neighbors and, if you visit, then you can tell your friends about us. Your physician, chiropractor, or physical therapist might refer you to a Therapeutic Massage therapist to compliment other treatments you are prescribed. You can check with your insurance carrier to see if Therapeutic Massage is covered and then ask for a referral or a prescription to the Therapeutic Massage therapist. Each routine may be slightly different in a therapeutic massage clinic. The therapist will want to discuss with you the details of your pain or injury. A therapeutic massage will not cover the whole body, rather the areas involved with the pain issues. These issues can include; repetitive stress injuries, migraines, tension headaches, whiplash, strains and sprains, low back pain, and frozen shoulder to name a few. The massage will involve various techniques such as deep tissue massage, trigger point therapy and myofascial release. Clients should communicate with the therapist to avoid pain during the session, sometimes the pressure applied by the therapist is too much and they need to apply less pressure. Every client is different, but communication is key, especially dealing with trigger points. A massage should never hurt....it may be uncomfortable at times, but should never be painful. At Trilogy Massage we talk with our clients before and after each session. We keep up to date SOAP notes in the client’s file. A therapeutic massage can greatly benefit your overall well being. Hester, D.M.D. LEWIS GRIZZARD AND MARK TWAIN LIVE This October, chameleon actor Bill Oberst Jr. returns to The Strand’s Stephen W. Imler stage for a weekend of inhabiting the hearts and minds of two American greats – Mark Twain and Lewis Grizzard. Previously performing as Lewis Grizzard to sold out audiences at The Strand, Oberst brings with him this year iconic author and humorist Mark Twain for the first time. Lewis Grizzard: In His Own Words (Thursday & Friday, October 13 & 14 @ 8PM) Bill Oberst Jr’s portrayal of Lewis Grizzard is authorized by the humorist’s widow, who says it is as close as one can come to seeing the late great spokesman of the South onstage again. For anyone who grew up in (or just loves) the South, it’s a sweet and funny evening of theatre, with lots of laughs and a few tears, just the way Lewis would have liked it. Mark Twain: In His Own Words (Saturday, October 15 @ 8PM & Sunday, October 16 @ 3PM) Bill Oberst Jr.’s solo show Mark Twain In His Own Words is just as caustic, and just as sentimental, as Sam Clemens himself. The material is pure Americana; tall tales, wild adventures and sharp observations on humanity All tickets are on sale now. Seating is assigned. Tickets are $25 and are available online at www.earlsmithstrand.org, over the phone at 770.293.0080, or in person at 117 North Park Square. The plot revolves around Shakespeare’s Hamlet as he mourns both his father’s death and his mother, Queen Gertrude’s remarriage to Claudius. Polonius’s son Laertes returns to Denmark to avenge his father’s death. Polonius’s daughter Ophelia loves the Prince but he drives her to madness. Ophelia dies by drowning. I have received many meaningful comments about the event but the following touched me in a special way and assured me it was all worth it. This came in the mail today and want to share with the public. “Marietta Kiwanis Club Members, I wanted to write to you to express my sincere appreciation for the efforts to honor the 15th anniversary of September 11th this year at Kennesaw Mountain. The Field of Flags is a sobering reminder to all of the tragedies that occurred on that horrible day 15 years ago. On September 11, 2001, I was a young professional fulfilling my dream to work in the design industry in New York City. It was all I had ever dreamed, the city was beaming with energy and promise. On that day, my world changed as I watched the city I loved under attack. My hope and promise was quickly replaced with debilitating fear and uncertainty. Like all Americans, that day changed me. I suffered and continue to suffer from PTSD because of what I experienced that day. I looked directly into the eyes of pure evil and was paralyzed by fear. Many years I feel very alone and just so very sad as it seems that life just moved on. Public Safety Employee of the Year Sergeant Brian Hunt from the Acworth Police Department This award is given to an employee who has performed his or her job with exceptional skill, exhibited leadership and critical incident management and a devotion to their responsibilities. Sergeant Brian Hunt stands out from amongst his peers for his dedication to service, his expansive knowledge of the field, and a rookie-like hunger to always be learning something new. His superiors believe he has been able to move up through the ranks because of his willingness to try anything, his unmatched drive and his servant’s heart. Sergeant Brian Hunt has been a devoted public servant for more than two decades and just hit his sweet 16 with the Acworth Police Department (APD). On March 4, 2015, Sgt. Hunt was the first to arrive on scene for a shooting incident and discovered a man who had suffered a gunshot wound to his femoral artery. Sgt. Hunt immediately covered the wound and put heavy pressure on the man’s wound in an attempt to contain the bleeding. Not only did Sgt. Hunt arrive most quickly to the scene, he also employed quick thinking and practical emergency medical techniques to save the life of a victim in peril. Without Sgt. Hunt the man would have certainly bled out. Operating within the Ben Robertson Community Center, the program hosts over 300 participants on a weekly basis through a variety of instructional classes for children as young as two through young teens. A Parkour, or freestyle gymnastics, class is available for boys, and there are also classes that serve children with special needs. The goal of the overall program is to develop gymnastics skills while providing a safe environment for fun and exercise. Lori Cooley, a former collegiate gymnast from Auburn University, heads up the program and is supported by an amazing staff of caring professionals who are both encouraging and passionate about children and the sport of gymnastics. After spending many years developing the wonderful recreation program and witnessing the skills of many area gymnasts, Lori decided it was time to create a competitive team. Currently there are three teams that comprise the Kennesaw Explosion Gymnastics Team: USA, Excel and Gym Stars. These teams exploded onto the scene with great success and are recognized at many events as skilled and highly trained athletes. Many onlookers are shocked to find that these teams operate out of a parks & recreation facility. The USA Team is coached by Brooke Anderson and Caitlin Cooley (Lori’s daughter), who are also former competitive gymnasts. They have built a “force to be reckoned with” and a remarkable camaraderie among their gymnasts. They cheer each other on, and end each practice in a huddle with the chant, “WANT, TAKE, HAVE, KENNESAW EXPLOSIONS GO BOOM!” To help offset expenses associated with competitive gymnastics, the teams will be coordinating several fundraisers including the operation of a Frito-Chili Pie booth during californiadreaming.rest the Fall-O-Ween Fest & Outdoor Movie at Swift-Cantrell Park on October 15, two Parents Night Out events at the Ben Robertson Community Center on October 22 and December 17, and a Bingo Night on November 5, also at the Ben Robertson Center. So you can play it. Your kids can play it. They play! If you play isn’t it supposed to be fun? Way too many times I witness unnecessary pressure put on kids, screaming at officials/umpires. We treat it as if the umpire, the official makes a bad call it will be ruining our kids chances to play in the pros, its life changing. I know of a couple of situations where the kid doesn’t want one of their parents to attend their games because they put way too much pressure, too critical of their kid’s performance. Is this you? You get so amped up it is stressful. What happened to going to your kid’s game and watching them play and you take in their enjoyment, their fun? I get the emotion, the energy and getting caught up in the moment of the game. Its action packed. Guess what, your son or daughter may not make the high school team or go to college and play a sport or have a career in the pros, so what. No matter what level of play they reach, their time in the sport will come to an end. The sport dictates that for the most part. So the next time you attend your kids sport and the coach doesn’t do something you like or the official or umpire makes a call or your kid or one of their teammates makes a mistake, remember its okay. It will not change your life. It will not change your child’s life. Just take a deep breath, and be proud, be thankful you have the opportunity to watch your child play. The opportunity definitely will not last forever. We play a game. It truly is only a game, have fun, enjoy and make the memories be positive. Storey, Columnist There is a terrible story about two young Mormon missionaries who were going door to door. “They knocked on the door of one woman who was not at all happy to see them. The woman told them in no uncertain terms that she did not want to hear their message and slammed the door in their faces. To her surprise, however, the door did not close and, in fact, almost magically bounced back open. She tried again, really putting her back into it and slammed the door again with the same amazing result--the door bounced back open. Convinced that one of the young religious zealots was sticking their foot in the door, she reared back to give it a third slam. She felt this would really teach them a lesson. But before she could act, one of them stopped her and politely said, Ma’am, before you do that again, you really should move your cat.” We don’t see many door-to-door sales people anymore, do we? Why not? First of all, nobody’s home anymore, are they? At least, in the day time. And at night, with so much to do, and after husband and wife have worked all day, most people don’t want to be bothered with strangers at the door. So, at least in one respect, we live in a different world than the one in which Jesus appointed seventy emissaries and told them to go out two-by-two into the towns and villages from house to house to heal the sick and to tell everyone who would listen that the Kingdom of God is near. We could do that today, but the results would be disappointing. We now have doctors and hospitals to heal people’s bodies, and most people today would not be too happy to have us tapping on their door. Jesus would probably have us develop a different strategy for the world in which we live, but there are some important truths in today’s lesson we still need to see. 1. Jesus still calls us to reach out to the world. 2. Jesus calls us to identify with those He came to save. 3. Sometimes those we minister to will do more for us than we will do for them. The three-hour limit will be effective starting October 1 and will apply from 7 am - 10 pm seven days a week.
