fitness is the first requisite of happiness,”
and Pilates, as the world is increasingly
discovering, is a marvelous path to
physical fitness.

Mission Statement
Body Arts and Science International® - in
short, BASI Pilates® - is a teaching institute
specializing in the training and continuing
education of Pilates instructors.
this by preserving the classical
repertoire of the founders of Pilates and
supplementing it with contemporary
experience and scientific knowledge. The
result is an approach to the teaching of
Pilates, which is both true to the roots of
the Method and valid in terms of the most
up-to-date research and understanding.
Established in 1989, BASI Pilates® was
one of the first companies to introduce
curriculum-based studies for Pilates
instructors. BASI founder and CEO, Rael
Isacowitz, has been teaching the Method
for over 30 years and is one of the most
prominent and respected Pilates teachers
in the world.
A BASI Pilates education covers three
overlapping fields:
• A thorough understanding of the science underlying the Pilates Method, including physiology, applied anatomy, the principles of alignment and posture.
BASI Pilates is dedicated to formulating
and maintaining the highest possible
professional standards for the teaching of
Pilates. As the company’s name indicates,
BASI approaches the Pilates method
as both an art and a science – i.e. the
exercise of human creativity and skill, as
well as a branch of knowledge that can be
systematically taught and studied.
• The classical Pilates repertoire.
• BASI innovations and teaching methodologies.
The latter include the BASI® Block System,
a method of classifying Pilates exercises
and building them into workouts, and an
entirely new repertoire of exercises based
on the Avalon® System, a line of equipment
designed by Rael Isacowitz.
The mission of BASI Pilates is to
perpetuate the work of Joseph and Clara
Pilates by educating teachers of the
highest caliber. The company accomplishes

Terminology
In keeping with regulatory requirements,
BASI Pilates has ceased using the term
“certification” to describe the certificate of
qualification that it provides.
The correct professional meaning of
“certification” is third-party assessment of
knowledge, training and skills according
to predetermined standards. Certification
(also called licensing in certain
professions) is provided by independent,
non-educational bodies, such as medical
boards, legal bar associations and, in our
profession, the PMA. These certification
bodies assess the knowledge and skills
of people who have attended training
courses, such as those run by BASI Pilates.
has provided over the years and that is
held in the highest esteem within the
Pilates profession.
Only the terminology has changed. As
Pilates matures and enters the mainstream,
it is incumbent upon the method’s
thought-leaders to adopt and maintain
professional standards. That is exactly
what BASI Pilates is doing.
The term now used by BASI to describe
the credentials received by students who complete its teacher training courses is BASI Pilates Teaching Diploma.
It is identical to the certificate that BASI

Programs of Study:
Advanced Education
Pilates is now firmly in the mainstream of
the health & fitness industry
As the popularity of the method grows,
instructors are faced with the challenge
of dealing with infinite types of clients,
each with her/his individual needs,
abilities, chronic injuries or pathologies. It
is a daunting prospect, even for a highly
experienced professional.
At the same time, mainstream exposure
has led to the use of Pilates methods and
exercises in a wide range of disciplines,
from strengthening athletes to relieving
pain and alleviating some of the physical
manifestations of conditions such as
Parkinson. Pilates professionals now have
the opportunity to expand their scope
and enrich their careers – if they have the
appropriate training.
Program Description
BASI Advanced Education provides Pilates professionals with the specialized skills they
need to succeed and prosper in today’s very competitive commercial environment. The
program provides classes in five areas:
• Pilates for specific purposes (e.g. pre- and post-natal).
• Pilates for specific population groups (e.g. children).
• Advanced Pilates repertoire on traditional apparatus and/or repertoire on new (non-traditional) equipment (e.g.
the Avalon step-barrel).
• Teaching practices and methodologies • Anatomical focus on specific parts of the
(e.g. cueing techniques).
body (e.g. shoulder mechanics).
37
Program Description continued
Advanced education is available in two formats:
• One-day workshops: comprising high-
level overviews and practical work
• Three-day certificate courses: providing intensive theoretical and practical training
The Advanced Education program changes regularly and workshops/courses are held
throughout the US and abroad. Please check the BASI Pilates web site (www.basipilates.
com) for the current schedule.
