President's Report Firstly, I must comment on the recent fires that have plagued the south west this past week or so. My best wishes go out to any WAERA members and friends in this trying time and I hope that you are now safe and all your horses and other fur and feathered babies are safe as well. What an awful start to 2016. It can only get better from here. On a nicer note, Happy New Year to all members; I hope you all had awesome Christmas celebrations with family and friends. Thank you very much for your trust in me as your President for 2016. Most of you know me and know I will give it my best shot. The AGM has been and gone and I feel we got through most things pretty well. It would be nice to see more members attend the meeting and have your say, after all it is your club. But I guess I can take from that, that you are all fairly happy with how things are going with the club and how the SMC are doing things. Thanks. Congratulations to all winners, riders and horses, very well deserved. It was nice to see the majority of the winners attending the awards evening. A huge thank you to Verna Blackburne for the awesome job she did in organising the end of year award trophies, they were just gorgeous. To Deb Ryan for helping Verna set up and organise the venue, the flowers on the tables and the horse balloons added a special touch to the whole evening. Great food, great music (could that girl sing!) and great company made for a very enjoyable evening. Thank you very much to the retiring committee members, Brian Pullin, Leigh Hopkinson and Julia Howard. Your work and input into running WAERA was and is appreciated by the membership; we could not have done it without you. Thank you to the SMC members who have agreed to stay on for yet another year. Welcome to the members who have stepped up to serve on the 2016 State Management Committee. Abigail Bartell from Mt Barker, a very new member stepping into the role of Treasurer, which is so appreciated by all. It’s great to have Ross McCamish and Richard Jeggo returning to the SMC, bringing their wealth of knowledge and experience which will be extremely helpful in guiding the club into the future. Welcome to any new riders joining our ranks. From the emails I am getting I think we will be seeing quite a few new members this year. Good luck, may your dreams and aspirations for the 2016 riding year come true. Deb Jewell

Thanks goes to Anna Erickson for putting together the following information, aimed at assisting horse
owners in being prepared should they be involved in a fire event.
Fire Preparedness when you own Horses Of course you should have a bushfire preparedness plan. For more information on how to draw one up go here: http://www.dfes.wa.gov.au/safetyinformation/fire/bushfire/pages/bushfiresurvivalplan.aspx But there are a few extra wrinkles to consider when there are horses on the property. The following is a grab bag of my thoughts and impressions after attending several fires as part of my work at the Department of Agriculture and Food WA:  How many horses do you have and how many can you move at a time? Our plan is to stay and defend
our property but if I have time the dogs and horses will be evacuated first. Like so many of us though I
have 5 horses and a float which will carry…. 4. If you are in the same boat, remember that if a fire is close
once you leave your property you may not be able to go back. Move the horses early OR make plans for
a safe area to leave some or all of them in place.
 Are your horses safe and reliable to load? It may be that friends have to move them because a fire hits
while you are away. Even if it is you, loading under pressure in the heat and in a panic is a whole different
prospect.
 What are your exit routes? Where is fire most likely to come from? For my area, it’s almost always a
North Westerly or North Easterly wind when fire conditions are really bad, so I have my Southern escape
route really well planned.
 Is there only one road away from your property? If so, it only takes one fallen tree to block it. Have a pair
of wire cutters in your tow vehicle and be prepared to cut fences and go through paddocks if you have to.
What about bridges? They can and do collapse and/or burn so what route will you take if the bridge is
taken out?
 Do you have a safe area for the horses if you cannot evacuate? It doesn’t take much to slow a fire down. I
went to houses after the Black Saturday fires in Victoria, and again in Yarloop last month, where half an
acre of irrigated kikuyu was enough to save animals. They were standing on the green stuff, quite happy,
with houses in ashes all around them. Your alternative is a bare area – a sand arena or sacrificial grazed
out paddock. BUT remember horses will panic. Any area must be solidly fenced.
 On larger properties, your best bet may be to open all the internal gates and let the horse go where they
will. In open areas with lower fuel loads, horses seem to cope quite well, moving through the fire front to
the burnt area behind it. DON’T open external gates – they stand more chance of surviving a fire on open
grazed ground than they do if they hit a 20 ton fire truck on the road.
 Leave some form of ID on them. Microchipping or branding is often the best as long as the brand or chip
is attached to CURRENT contact details for you. Failing that, write your mobile number on their foot with
a chemi pen. You will see a lot of posts suggesting you spray or paint your number on them. Many of
those paints and sprays are FLAMMABLE, so check what you are using carefully. Plain bay horses with
no brand or chip are almost unidentifiable by the inexperienced person who may now have your horse in
their back paddock!
 Remove all rugs and halters, unless you have leather halters. Nylon will burn or melt.
 HOWEVER, if leaving them is your only option, it is important they are removed from hot ground as soon
as possible. Standing for long periods on hot ground can cause laminitis, even if the original fire did not
burn the horse.
 If you evacuated and left the horses behind, there is a PROCESS IN PLACE to get people back to their
animals as soon as possible. DON’T sneak in on a back road – fallen trees, downed power lines and
even unexpected things like burnt asbestos all pose a severe threat to human safety. Police permits will
allow you to enter the fire area to attend to animals early. You will need photo ID and proof that you are
the property owner (rates notice, PIC card if you are registered with DAFWA). This may be enough to get
you through checkpoints: otherwise, ask where you can go to get a permit, which will allow you to enter
with a fire services escort.
 PLEASE don’t get grumpy with people at road blocks. They have a job to do and their primary mission is
to protect HUMAN life.
 If you can’t get in, make a report as soon as possible to DAFWA, your local vet, or find out where the
RSPCA officer is. There will generally be one waiting to help.
The Long Ride: the Journey to Verona 2017 (Bec Radny's quest for selection for the 2017 World Youth Endurance Championship) Update 1 The philosophical phrase ‘it isn’t about the destination, it’s about the journey’ is one that can undoubtedly be applied to the process of working towards international competition. Years of careful planning, hours upon hours of training and qualifying, not to mention the emotional rollercoaster that comes with our endurance passion,is invested into getting the athlete and the horse onto the world stage. I have witnessed this first hand with the campaign of my dad, Norbert Radny, and the famous West Coast Acharon who competed for Australia in WEG Kentucky 2010 and WEC Euston Park 2012. Now I am experiencing it. My current aim is the 2017 World Youth Endurance Championship in Verona, Italy. The qualification process for this event involves completing three FEI** 120km rides, one of which to be 14km/hr or faster on the nominated horse for Worlds. I am very lucky to have been offered the opportunity of riding for Oso Arabians with their exceptionally talented herd of horses. In January of this year, there was a two day meeting in Melbourne for those who have expressed interest for future international competitions. The meeting covered a lot of bases and gave me a greater insight into what would be involved and expected of me. It inspired me to work even harder to get to Verona. Thus far, I have completed one two star event at the Equestrian Australian Endurance Ride Championship in NSW last October. I rode Brookleigh Shiralee, a very independent minded but swift‐
footed mare owned by Talea Hasko‐Stewart. I completed this course in an average of 15.3km/h to place 4th in the Youth Division. This course is ideal for a fairly fast ride, however an efficient and experienced strapping team can shave off important minutes from the ride time. The Anderson’s and Cordell’s from Tasmania, as well as my parents, were definitely this team and we got Shiralee into vetting with the fastest recovery times of the day, an average of 1.45 minutes. The next stage in my journey will be in April, where a Team Camp for interested parties will be held at Oso Arabians and Murray Grey Cattle in Table Top, NSW. Following the camp will be an FEI** and FEI*** event, in which I will be competing. We are very fortunate that this event has been organised as qualifying is difficult, and becomes extremely so with the limited FEI calendar in Australia. Between now and then, I will be working on my rider fitness with a Personal Trainer attached to Melbourne University Sports when I resume studying in March. Keep your fingers crossed for me! Jo Van Uden
tells of the journey
she has shared with her pony Bailey. Bailey is a sensitive boy who needs a special
understanding and he was lucky to find Jo. I know there have been some testing
times but both Jo and daughter Kylie have invested many hours to help Bailey
become a more confident boy. They (all) make a great team!
My journey thus far with Bailey... I hadn’t owned or ridden a horse for over 20 years when Bailey came into my life courtesy of my daughter, Kylie. Kylie was attending Harvey Ag College and a horse had come up for sale. Kylie came home for the 2011 Easter holidays….so did Bailey I had been going to endurance rides with Kylie since 2010 in a strapper role. I watched and gained as much information as I could. Kylie convinced me to have a go myself, which I did in June 2011 at Jarrahdale ‐my first 20km ride. What an experience! It was much easier being a strapper than a rider! The nerves were overwhelming both for me and Bailey. He didn’t like the TPR’s or Vets coming anywhere near him, even though they all approached him with care. Mr Anxiety was my nickname for him. Bailey and I completed another four 20km rides successfully. We were never able to have his temperature taken, even though I could do it at home. I was doing my best trying to desensitize him to the vetting in procedure as I was ready to try the 40km rides and knew that this was a necessary procedure. It was after we completed the March 2012 Jarrahdale ride that disaster strikes. The ride went really well and we were back in the float yard area strapping down when Bailey got spooked by a kangaroo in the bush. He literally tried to jump into my arms to protect himself. No matter what I tried he wouldn’t get out of my space. I had to take a dive and roll under the yards not realising Bailey was coming with me, know matter what. He managed to get out of the float yards with them still being intact. But my body wasn’t. I broke 2 ribs and was bruised and battered. I then realised I had to further my knowledge in learning how to teach Bailey to be respectful of mine and other people's space, trust and believe in himself and me. My next endurance ride wouldn’t be until June 2013. I Googled and YouTubed until I found a method I could follow. I then began the training. I was able to follow and complete the method to the best of my capabilities. Vetting in became a lot easier, not perfect, but better. I sent Bailey to a trainer in January 2014; he was able to reinforce my methods as well as taking his training to a higher level. May 2014 was my first attempt at an 80km ride. Bailey vetted in perfectly. There was no rushing through the TPR’s and he allowed them to take his temperature. Unfortunately we vetted out after the first 40km due to heart rate. But to me it was a success. Bailey’s behaviour was so pleasing. Due to an illness, this would be our only ride for the year. 2015…..what a year  We completed the Easter Marathon 3 x 40km. I chose to withdraw Bailey at Manjimup which was our second attempt at an 80km ride, due to him being extremely tired. We hit the road to Mt Magnet for the Challa Station Mill Run completing 2 x 40km. We successfully completed 50km at Collie in June. At all these rides Bailey was so well behaved during the vetting in process. We were now a team it was time to attempt an 8okm ride. We planned to ride at Capel, Avon Valley and Katanning with Bridgetown being the back up. Unfortunately Katanning and Bridgetown were cancelled, so Collie it was. I can happily say we were able to successfully complete all three of the 80km rides. Capel being my first 80km ride was exhausting but rewarding. Avon Valley, such a scenic ride, which made up for the blizzard conditions in the afternoon. Collie, what a hard ride, those hills just kept on appearing! I will have owned Bailey for 5 years this year. What a journey we have both travelled. We still have so much more to learn from each other and so many more miles to ride together. Jo and Bailey
Wow, what a difference a few years makes! The photo on the left is from 2011 I believe (at Log Fence Pony Club which now has a huge journey of its own, rebuilding after the recent fire) where Bailey does not look nearly as relaxed and comfortable (or white for that matter!) as he does in the photo taken in 2015. Thanks to Jo for the photos. Chris Ros continues to delve into the archives, finding interesting snippets along the way. They sure played hard in those days! Toodyay Herald (WA) 1st June 1928
TROTTING.
A Hardy Trotter.
There were some very hardy horses in the old days. There was a 10-mile race at Corowa, but in.
1861 a match between trotters over a hundred miles took place. According to a report of that time
their names were Archy and Whisker. Archy, driven by a man named Proctor, won, doing the
distance in 9 hours 36 minutes. Both horses and riders were completely done up at the finish. The
winner appears to have soon got over his distressing journey, we are told, as he started on a mash
and finished up on a feed of corn. Archy was a dark roan, standing about 16 hands, with Arab blood
in his veins. His pedigree was unknown, and he is said to have accomplished some remarkable feats
in his time.
Check out what Frances Overheu has provided for this newsletter! Firstly, a terrific poem
about her machine (or jet!) of a horse Homer (Poseidon Moon). I think all members, new
and old, continue to be in awe of what Homer keeps on achieving! Refer to the Award
Winners List earlier in the newsletter to read of his 2015 efforts! Nothing short of
incredible!

GOING LIKE A BOEING We encountered it first at the pink Capel ride
Liz Cullam she first noticed it
Homer’s microchip number ends in 747
So he’s not just a horse, he’s a JET!
Head vet, Anne Barnes, also suspected it
When she called me a witch with a horse
A horse whose feet never touched the ground
And leaves hardly a hoof print on course
So now I’m pilot in command if you like
But only when we take off and land.
The rest of the time the autopilot kicks in
Be it mud or rocks or deep sand.
The auto pilot is Homer, you see
With a mind of his own, to be fair
So I tighten my seatbelt when I take over control
‘Cos we often hit turbulent air.
We’ve done over 9000 k’snow
A flight to Sydney then Darwin and back.
We’re in for the long haul, like it or not
Bad weather, sore bones or tough track.
So when you’re next out on course and feel like a rush
From your head to your hard working knees
Come, go like a Boeing, and hold on tight
Come fly with Homer and me.
Frances and Homer sharing a moment. Photo courtesy of AERA. Give the crossword a go and send your entries to Frances! Enjoy!
