Whether by giving to support scholarships, programs and facilities or by establishing endowed teaching chairs, NWFSC friends have made the Foundation what it is today. Generous individuals, families, corporations and civic groups are our greatest allies and the Foundation would be incapable of meeting student needs without them. Perhaps one of the most visible functions of the Foundation is the scholarship support made possible by benefactors who choose to make life better for students who need financial assistance to meet the ever-increasing costs of tuition and books. In the past year, 306 students received funds in excess of $369,800 for tuition assistance from scholarships administered by the Foundation. At the annual Scholars and Donors Luncheon, students speak of what scholarship support means to them and to their families, especially in trying financial times. If you add the Foundation’s support of the Northwest Florida Symphony Orchestra, the Mattie Kelly Arts Center, the Choctawhatchee Basin Alliance, Raider Athletics, Nursing, BSN, BAS and BSE programs, you still have only a partial picture of what the Foundation means to the college. The Visual Arts Building, outdoor sculptures, fish swimming in Science Building fish tanks, benches circling the Seven Dancers fountain, the Human Patient Simulator used by college nursing students, American flags in each classroom and even many library books are there because of Foundation donors. Donors first envision and then they act, and in the process, bring more to the college and the students we serve. Our greatest successes are directly due to those who see value in our mission and continually support us with their gifts. I stand amazed at the difference that Northwest Florida State College has made in our community and in the lives of so many individuals around us. Thank you for your continued support of our mission to strengthen our college and our students. As citizens in Florida and our local region look to upgrade their job skills, train for a new career or begin a college degree, they turn to affordable and accessible community and state colleges. Florida’s “Great 28” served more than 850,000 students in 2009 – an increase of 9.6 percent from the previous year. Indications are that 2010 will continue this rapid growth trend. At Northwest Florida State College, 16,931 students were served in 2009 – an increase of 7.5% from the previous year. Not only are students enrolling in record numbers, the Florida College System leads the southeast region in graduation/ progression rates and is among the nation’s top producers of associate degrees. The number of degrees granted by NWFSC also continues to break records with 1,881 degrees and certificates granted in 2009 – a 6.4 percent increase over the previous year and the highest annual total in the college’s history. Dr. Will Holcombe, chancellor of the Florida College System recently noted that, “The doors to our colleges remain open as they continue to provide the necessary skills essential for today’s workforce.” This is true at NWFSC as it is across the state. Our open door admissions policy means we meet students at their point of need. Often times we are the first, and sometimes the only, opportunity for students to achieve higher education. G. Thomas Delaino Interim President NWF State College Yet, while enrollments are soaring, state funding is down 14 percent for community and state colleges over the past three years. In effect, the system is now serving some 70,000 unfunded students. That’s why sensible and sustained investment in the vital mission of NWFSC is so important. Scholarship and program support by individuals and corporations provide hope and help for thousands of local students – whether it be in a career oriented certificate, an associate degree or progression into one of NWFSC’s five popular baccalaureate programs which are focused on the critical workforce areas of nursing, education and business. Thank you for your past support and for your on-going commitment to preparing the next generation for success. G. When I moved on to UWF, the monetary support made the financial burden much easier to bear. With two children, sometimes college tuition was not always easy to find. I will always be indebted to Lt. Gen. and Mrs. Burke for their confidence in me and for their financial support.” Former Northwest Florida State College Foundation Director Kelly Burke was a mainstay on the Foundation Board of Directors for more than 15 years. The retired Air Force Lt. General was appointed to the Board of Directors in 1994 when the college was still known as Okaloosa-Walton Community College. In his years of service as a member of the Board of Directors, Burke’s influence was especially felt on the Finance Committee, the committee responsible for guiding and monitoring Foundation investments. Recently he retired from active board service and his daughter, Bethany, has joined the board to help continue the family legacy of service. Introduced to the college Foundation by retired NWFSC employee Bill Hall, who was paired with Burke in a local golf tournament, the General and his family have been among the great friends of the college. In 1993, Burke and his wife established the Kelly and Denny Burke Family Scholarship Endowment with a gift of $60,000. The scholarship was designed for non-traditional students with military men and women and their spouses being recipients that were particularly favored. Not ones to sit back and look at the many students who benefitted from the scholarship and be satisfied, the Burkes decided to establish the Burke Plus 2 Scholarship with the Foundation. This particular scholarship is awarded annually to a number of students who have received their degrees from NWFSC but who were not Burke Scholars while attending the college. The scholarship provides $1,500 per academic year for two years to any public college or university in Florida, including NWFSC. The Burkes also support NWFSC student nurses through the Patricia Burke-Ackal Nursing Scholarship named in memory of their daughter, Patty. Once students began receiving scholarship awards, the Burkes decided to extend the scope of the scholarship and add a bonus feature. The Burke Scholarship began to offer an additional two years at any public Florida college or university to scholarship recipients who wanted to work toward their Bachelor’s degree. Riotta Scott, former NWFSC Web Page Designer and current web team member at the University of From the first eight students who received the inaugura Kelly and Denny Burke Family Scholarship in 1994, the Burke family has awarded scholarships to 235 students. Though his tenure on the NWFSC Foundation Board of Directors is over, Kelly Burke’s legacy, and that of the entire Burke family, will live on in the hundreds of students whose lives they have touched. ~7~ 2009 Overview Friends of Northwest Florida State College continue to make a positive impact by donating to the NWFSC Foundation. They know that education changes lives for the better and makes a difference not only for students, but also contributes to a better community and stronger economy. In good economic times and in bad, it is the donors who either step up or retreat as their circumstances allow. In 2009, NWFSC Foundation donors definitely stepped up. Families, businesses, nonprofit organizations, colleges and universities across the United States have felt the economic strain and Northwest Florida State College is no exception. In February, 2008, NWFSC Foundation Board members drafted a letter to send to nearly 100 donors, explaining that in light of the previous year’s negative return on the endowment, extra help would be needed to award scholarships in fall 2009. The response was most gratifying. Contributions and pledges from donors more than made up the anticipated shortfall in scholarship funding and the goal of bringing in enough to renew two-year scholarships was met. Thanks to the generosity of our donors, the Foundation awarded 306 scholarships for the 2009 academic year, or roughly $306,800 to support student success. Scholarship gifts come in a variety of ways, speaking to the ingenuity, as well as the generosity, of our donors. For example, there was Chad Wilkey from Crestview who lost his younger brother C. J. in an automobile accident. To honor C. J. and his love of music, Wilkey and his friend, Jodie Beane, determined to establish a scholarship for a student musician. Both avid motorcycle enthusists, the natural inclination was to have a poker run, inviting “bikers” from all over northwest Florida to participate. The proceeds from this successful first-time fundraiser established the scholarship fund. Love of music and honoring a departed loved one was also motivation for Mary Mancini, widow of another well-known musician, Mike Mancini. In memory of her late husband and to assist students Mary funded the Mike Mancini Scholarship for a Gifted Musician by hosting big-band and jazz concerts with all proceeds going toward the scholarship. Continuing the musical theme, the Northwest Florida Symphony Orchestra, with a lead gift from the Symphony Guild, created the KATS (Kids at the Symphony) Program to instill and advance the love of symphony music among local children. KATS has been generously sponsored by individuals, businesses, civic organizations and foundations who share a passion for creating musical experiences for students of all ages. Numerous youngsters and their parents have enjoyed symphony concerts held in the Mattie Kelly Arts Center this season as a result of their generosity. ~8~ The First Generation in College Scholarship was, as its name implies, established solely for students who are the first in their families to ever attend college. Donors, including members of the college’s District Board of Trustees and members of the NWFSC Foundation Board of Directors, stepped up this past year with a total of $20,000, the amount necessary for a $1-to-$1 match from the Foundation for Florida’s Community Colleges. This match is critical since the State of Florida has been unable to distribute matching scholarship dollars for several years. Dotty Blacker of Valparaiso once saw the need for a Visual Arts Building to compliment that of the performing arts and invested seed money to make it happen. When the building was a reality, Blacker helped fund two one-of-a-kind sculptures to grace the walkways leading up to the Visual Arts Building. Now Dotty’s sights are set on the green between the Administration and Science Buildings on the Niceville Campus. Blacker’s significant gift will fund a truly working work-of-art when an interactive sundial is designed and installed. Tim McDonald and Fort Walton Machining continued to build the Fort Walton Machining Endowed Teaching Chair in Project and Acquisitions Management, just as Bob and Venita Morell and David and Susan Cohen continued funding the Janet Nadel Morell Endowed Teaching Chair in Reading and Literature in memory of their mother and mother-in-law. Alumnus Bruce Shavey continued his annual commitment to fund the Shavey Family Scholarships, B. J., Karen and Kalena Thomhave hosted their annual golf tournament to fund the Christian Thomhave Scholarship in memory of their son and brother, and Wayne and Susan Campbell funded additional support for the Meagan Campbell Health Technology Scholarship in memory of their daughter. Friends of Meagan added to this support with their gifts given through the United Way. This past year Foundation assets also grew through the generosity of two trusts, those of Mrs. Marie Snow Greene of Shalimar and Mr. E. L. Herrington of Crestview which prove the importance of planned giving. It is worth noting that the Foundation ended the year with donor support to the college up by seven percent over the same period last year. Encouragement, support and friendship are the bedrock of the NWFSC Foundation. The Foundation is dependent upon those who see value in our mission and do whatever they can to support it. No matter the final destination of the designated gift, the Foundation is grateful for both the gift, the reason behind the gift and the donor who made it possible. ~9~ Endowed Teaching Chairs The Endowed Teaching Chair Program for Northwest Florida State College is designed to enrich student achievement by recognizing the strength of the college—its teaching faculty and instructional departments. Teaching Chairs have traditionally been associated with universities to lure pre-eminent researchers to the institutions. The Endowed Teaching Chair Program at NWFSC molds the tradition into the college by rewarding excellence in teaching, recognizing academic achievement, enhancing college programs and by creating new educational or cultural opportunities.
