2016 Winter Rod and Speed Show
This was the best year ever for the Winter Rod and Speed Show, We had a great layout of the cars, thanks to the wonderful help Rich Bailey had. Due to the high number of spectators, Rich increased the amount the club with the most
entries received from 250 dollars to 300 dollars. That winning club was the Rollin’ Oldies, congratulations to them. The
quality of the cars just gets better every year...can’t wait till next year.
Kudo’s and thank you to Rich Bailey, great job!

5. Rod putting the hoses from the block to the carburetors.
6. Ken trying to remove the tape between the apron and
the rear fender on both sides, which was quite a messy
chore.

needed to do a little filing to get it on.
8. Here is a picture of the U-joint and shaft mounted to
the rack and pinion arm.
9. John screwing in the fitting for the oil pressure switch.
10. There is the new steering wheel mounted in place.

When I called Ron to ask for the interview, he readily agreed. I figured we would just do a quick interview on the
phone, but Ron said he would rather do it in person. We met at BlondZee’s for lunch a couple days later. It was not
until we sat down in the booth that the reason Ron did not want a phone interview became known. More about that
in a minute…
Ron was born right here in Woodburn, has two grown daughters Jennifer and Julie, three granddaughters (Megan,
Katie, and Emily) and is raising his 14 year old son Christian. Christian is a member of the Civil Air Patrol, and
wants a 55 Chevy! Ron is planning on building him one from the ground up! He plans on getting a new body & frame
(Art Morrison), but no 350 will be installed, Ron has plans for the Z06 to finish it off (that is 650 horsepower
folks!). Nothing like your first car I would venture to guess! Ron told me his first car was a 1953 Chevy. After his
dad passed away at age 9 , he and his brother had paper routes, tossing the papers in all kinds of weather…he also
worked in the fields along Silverton. When he had saved $125, he swapped for a ’55 BelAire which he converted
from an automatic to a three speed, and he kept
that car all through high school. He attended
North Salem High.
Although Ron did not speak of his mother, he had
lots to say about his dad, and as he spoke I got
teary just thinking about what he was saying.
Right after Pearl Harbor, his dad wanted to enlist in the Navy, but because he had a missing
thumb, he was rejected. That did not stop him
from helping in the war, he got a job rebuilding
ships. The son of Amish immigrants fleeing Germany, he wanted to be of service. At night, he
would stay in a tent near his job site, and began
repairing the watches of the workers, but because of the black-out, the repairs were done by
flashlight! Eventually he opened a jewelry store in
Woodburn.
When Ron was in the ninth grade, he knew he
wanted to go into the service, the Navy to be exact, and in fact he did! Ron joined the U.S. Navy 2 months after
turning 17. He became a gunner’s mate, serving in the Vietnam War 1968-69. It would be years later that Ron
would discover he had lost the majority of his
hearing. He said it came on slowly, but when he
was looked at by the VA, they gave him full disability. Ron says it is harder to hear women’s voices (yeah).
Back to being 9 years old! Ron worked with his
dad on the cars. Chrysler 300s. Hershberger’s in
Woodburn. In the years that followed, Ron would
work for Roberson Chrysler/Plymouth (70-73)
here in Salem. Ron holds a degree in Criminal
Justice which led him to work for the State of
Oregon as an investigator for 28 years, and the
Aumsville Police (Deputy Sheriff) from 1973 to
1977. While working in Aumsville, it was hard to
get a first responder in a timely manner. The
Stayton Ambulance was solely volunteers, and
Salem was also slow to respond. The Police Chief
and Ron went to school to become paramedics so
that the area would have a first responder.
Ron was also a member of the Aumsville Volunteer Fire Dept. After 32 years in law enforcement, Ron retired,
well, not really, he began driving semi doubles for two years, then he retired for good! If you think he retired to
sit on the sofa and watch NASCAR, you are right…he has been to the Indianapolis 500 more than once, (in a minute I will tell you a story about that), and is a huge NASCAR fan! Now for the story….
He had a Toyota Tundra that needed maintenance, so he took it to Larsen Motors in Albany. While they were
working on his vehicle, he was looking around when the sales rep and he began talking about Corvettes. The sales
rep told him he had an allotment for one. Ron ordered the 2015 Stingray that day! He decided not to tell anyone
until the car was here, but in the meantime he and his family went to the Indy 500. There was a 2014 Stingray on
display. Everyone ogled and got all wishful, yet Ron said nothing. When the car was delivered and Ron picked-it up,
he went to the school as usual to pick-up Christian, only Christian was looking for a Tundra, not a
new Stingray! He looked and looked, then finally
spotted his dad. (how fun) Now if that were all
there were to it, but no, Ron bought a new 2016
Corvette Z06 from the same dealer, but instead
of having it delivered, he told Christian he had
gotten an invitation to the Corvette Museum, but
time was short so they would fly. When they got
to the museum, Christian was so surprised to see
their name on the show board next to the red
2016 Corvette Z06! They removed the stations
and got to drive it with other Corvette owners in
a cruise around the Bowling Green Plant. Ron said
the transporter charge $1000 to “haul” it from
the factory to the museum….less than a block
away!
Ron is a world traveler, recently going to Europe
to retrace (backwards) the trip his grandparents
took when coming to America. He visited the Black Forest in Germany and brought home an original Black Forest
cuckoo clock, only 1 of three in existence, so big and long he had to hang it high so the big weights could hang
down. In addition to loving travel, he loves Disneyland. His story is that they were poor growing up, but somehow I
think there is a kid at heart there. He takes a whole bunch down to the magic kingdom for birthdays and special
occasions.
What else can I say about this guy? He is a humble person who actually has bragging rights. He is a woodworker
(cabinets he says), scuba diver, and just all around nice guy! If you can get a chance to do so, shake his hand and
thank him for a life of service to his country, ask him about them cool Corvettes, or invite him to sit at your table.
I enjoyed every minute of our conversation! He said one of our members saw him in Keizer and invited him to a
meeting, He says he likes it so far! (Hopefully Christian will have a chance to come to the meetings, his Air Patrol
meetings are the same night). Glad you are a part of Willamette Valley Street Rods Ron!
