Si coy WILLIAM 0. MCKAY A Grand Slam for Sigma Tau Chapter HIS is Phi Gamma Delta year at the University of Washington ( and what year isn't!). Three noble sons of Sigma Tau Chapter have won high distinctions in that hot-bed of college fraternity life— Seattle . Dr. Loyal Shoudy (Wash ington 04), chief surgeon of the Bethlehem Steel Company, has been chosen alumnus summa kude dignatus of the university for the year 1943. The award is given each year to an outstanding living alumnus for distinguishe d service over a period of years after graduation. Dr. Shoudy is a pionee r in the field of industrial medicine. He has directed Bethlehem's staff of 300 doctors and nurses since 1914. He has also done extensive research work in the treatment of lead-poisoning, tuberculosis, fractures and tendon injuries. He is a former president of the Association of Industrial Physic ians. Chief of Section IV of Phi Gamma Delta, Loyal has been host to crews at Poughkeepsie since Husky 1922. A rowing shell. A recent M-G-M newsreel showed Lieutenant Nolan returning in his plane, "jersey Bounce," from a bombing raid over Rotterdam on March 4. • •• Another Fiji who has won the Air Medal is Second Lieutenant Clyde V. Knisley (Tennessee '41 ), air corps. His citation follows: For meritorious achievement while participating in aerial flights in the New Guinea area, from October 17 to December I, 1942. During this period, Lieutenant Knisley participated in more than twenty-five operational flight missions during which hostile contact was probable and expected. These flights included patrol and interception missions against enemy bombers and fighter aircraft, and dive-bombing attacks on enemy installations. « • * Sigma Alpha Epsilon's Ernie Pyle, the roving reporter for Scripps-Howard, who used to play with the Fijis at Indiana University, is one of Phi Gamma Delta's best press agents. In his dispatches from the African area he frequently refers to our brothers. Exhibit A: Lieutenant Clarence E. Sununers [Nebraska '381 of Lincoln, Neb., says that if all the Savannah boys are here, then apparently all the Phi Gam fraternity members are too. He was eating the other night with six flyers he hadn't known before and five of them turned out to be Phi Gams. Exhibit B: Lieutenant-Colonel Graham West [Oregon '34] of Portland, Ore., is the executive officer of the whole group, but spent the entire time at the front with this one squadron. He is still with them, seeing that they rest as hard as they fought. West's nickname is "Windy." He and Jim Coward are typical of the air forces. McGillivray (Toronto '28) is a major with the Canadian forces in England; Captain James R. McKeldin (Virginia '25) is in the thick of things in Africa; Cornelis E. Groenewegen (Occidental '28, Stanford '28) is a navy lieutenant in Pacific waters, and Lieutenant William S. Robb (Pennsylvania '34), veteran of Guadalcanal, is back in the states in command of the naval air station at Hatboro, Pa. His many Fiji friends hope that "Timber," being a resourceful fellow, will eventually turn up. Some of those rescued were in bad physical condition, but Major Seasholes appeared to be healthy. His family in the States has deduced that Craig was forced down in a tropical storm while making an air journey. * •• The strange ways of Dame Fortune are revealed in an Associated Press dispatch from London concerning Emmett E.
