Most trainers know that “what you reward gets repeated”. But did you know that whatever your dog does will increase the likelihood that it will happen again? Whether your realize it or not, each and every time your dog performs a behaviour, it is building muscle memory, that physically changes his brain and makes it likely that the behaviour will occur again. So the more your dog performs a behaviour (desirable or not), the more strongly it’s ingrained and your dog will tend to automatically repeat it whenever they encounter the same situation or command. If you set your dog up for successfully performing the behaviour you want, it will help you. If you allow the dog to fail repeatedly, the more it will hurt your performance in future. This article will explain what muscle memory is, and then show you how to use it to your advantage for dog sports. HOW MUSCLE MEMORY AUTOMATES BEHAVIOUR Cognitive scripts are what your brain uses to automate daily tasks so you can think about more important things. One example is taking a shower. Most people start with adjusting the temperature, soaping one body part, moving to the next part, apply shampoo then conditioner, dry off, etc. Your brain probably follows a cognitive script so every time you shower you automatically perform the same set of actions, without consciously registering them. You might sometimes snap out of it and think “did I already wash my hair?” That’s when you switch off the auto play of the cognitive script to conscious thought. Similarly, most people use cognitive scripts for throwing a slam dunk in basketball, swinging a golf club, tying your shoes, driving home from work, completing a front cross in agility or performing heeling footwork in obedience, without ever understanding how it’s done. Dogs also use muscle memory to weave, perform running contacts or 2 on 2 off, to indicate target odor in nose work. Our brains and nerves function in similar ways. MUSCLE MEMORY HARD WIRES THE BRAIN AND PATHWAYS OF NERVES When a human throws a ball, his arm transmits its position though his brain by a series of nerves in a pathway. Once the brain detects the arm’s position, it tells his arm to move higher/lower, left/right and how fast to move the muscles using a pathway of nerves. An experienced thrower uses an established path of nerves. He doesn’t consciously think about moving his arm 20 inches up or 3 inches left. Once the first nerve in the throwing pathway fires, the second nerve automatically fires, then the third and so on consecutively and he automatically throws the ball as a result. The more you repeat the behavior, the stronger the muscle memory pathway becomes, by forming more connections and stronger connections. More consistent, reliable performance is the end result of successful practices. If you’ve never thrown a ball, you don’t have muscle memory and you’ll think a lot about how to throw, with more inconsistent performance as a result. Only by many successful repetitions will muscle memory take over, perhaps even leaving you with the feeling that you’re “in the zone”. USING MUSCLE MEMORY TO HELP TEACH YOUR DOG TO BE A GREAT WEAVER When you teach your dog to weave, you should set him up for success by training in a distraction free environment, with rewards your dog loves, at a time he is attentive. You can use guide wires (or channels or Weave-O-Matic) to show the dog the path to take to weave 4 or 6 poles, then reward. The dog doesn’t need to guess, since the wires show him the path to take. When the dog weaves the first time, the brain and limbs create a “weaving” pathway of 3 connected nerves. When he repeats weaving, the pathway is strengthened. More connections are created by the nerves in the weave pathway and the muscle memory becomes stronger. The dog doesn’t need to think about “collect to slow down, enter to the right of the first pole no matter where the handler is, move your left front paw 4 inches to the left and 12 inches beyond the pole, but instead muscle memory automatically takes over. Once the first nerve in the pathway fires, the second will fire, the third and so on, with the inevitable result of weaving, without conscious thought. GUIDE WIRES HELP BUILD SUCCESSFUL MUSCLE MEMORY In comparison, if you use weave guide wires, they show the dog the path he should take through the weaves. The more he repeats the behavior, the more he strengthens the connected pathway of nerves and the more reliably he will weave. Keep the guides on while you introduce and practice all the scenarios and handling maneuvers your dog may encounter, including: · · · · · · · · · · All possible entry and exit angles Distance – sends ahead, recalls, lateral distance Front crosses, rear crosses and switches at the entry and exit Distractions around weaves Weave discrimination Different weave equipment in different locations and environments Changes of handler speed and path (converging, diverging) Tunnel very close to the exit (may cause anticipation) Chute before the weave entry (dog is blind in the chute, then must find entry quickly) Weaves in short sequences, then entire courses When you’d bet $50 that your dog will successfully weave in every possible scenario, you will have built strong muscle memory to carry your dog through to success as you gradually get rid of the guides. FADE THE GUIDE WIRES It’s very important to note when your dog performs the weaves for the first time, he does NOT “know how to weave”. Only by repeating weaving many times WITH guides can he build muscle memory and learn reliable weave behavior. Progress by repeating weaving and rewarding, with the weave guides on, to ensure successfully building muscle memory for the performance you want. Gradually you can fade out the dog’s reliance on guide wires. Progress by moving from 2 sets of guide wires to one set at eye level, and then gradually lower the guides by ½ inch per session, while you continue to strengthen muscle memory. When the guides have been lowered to touch the ground, then you can start removing one wire per session. Remove guides from the idle of the set first. The entry and exit are the last guides to remove, as most dogs find those the most challenging pieces. Muscle memory should allow him to weave without conscious thought, unless he is distracted or thinking about other things. PRACTICING UNDESIRABLE BEHAVIOUR HURTS PERFORMANCE In the introduction I mentioned that performing undesirable behavior increases the likelihood of undesirable behavior repeating. It’s critically important when you teach your dog to weave to set him up for successfully building muscle memory by using weave guides (or channels, etc.). If instead you run towards the weaves and hope your dog works it out, your dog will guess, and perform undesirable behavior. Perhaps he barks, enters after the second pole, and pops out. You try again. The dog barks, enters after the second pole, and pops out. The dog’s nervous system is now creating a pathway of connected nerves, for “unsuccessful weaving”. The stronger that muscle memory becomes, eventually when he sees the weaves, he’ll automatically bark, enter pole 2 and pop out. The more you repeat the behaviour, the more challenges you will face. Some experts say you can never delete a cognitive script once it’s written. Once the pathway of nerves is connected, the best you can do is to write a new cognitive script. Even then, in times of stress, dogs (and humans) tend to revert to the previously formed pathway. Muscle memory explains why it’s easier to train behaviors you want in the first place, rather than retraining once you’ve made the mistake of creating undesirable behavior. DEALING WITH UNSUCCESSFUL PERFORMANCE If your dog fails twice in a row, you need to make the exercise easier. Go back to the last set up when your dog was successful. If you don’t like an aspect of the dog’s performance, stop and don’t repeat it. Get help and make a plan for setting your dog up for success. Set up the environment where it’s unlikely that the dog will fail. For example, many handlers reward their dog late and the dog looks back at them anticipating a reward instead of looking forward to the next obstacle. If you repeat “weave look back” it will be very hard to correct. Rather than practicing failure, set him up for success by: · Placing the reward at the weave exit so he will focus ahead to grab the reward as soon as he’s done weaving. · Getting your training partner to throw the reward at the exit · Asking your dog to perform a tunnel or jump (whatever he prefers) and deliver the reward after that obstacle so he automatically looks forward. Always remember that perfect practice makes perfect performance. Simply put, set up your dog for success by breaking down skills into increments where the dog is highly likely to succeed and unlikely to fail. Repeat successful performance many times to build muscle memory and then consider fading helpful training tools to challenge the dogs understanding. Whenever your dog fails, you need to make it easier and plan how to set up the environment so the dog succeeds next time, building the hardwired pathway of connected nerves that create muscle memory, and then strengthen it so that you can rely on successful performance in future. Much will depend on the level of training the other dogs in the group have had as well. Hunting a well-trained dog with dogs that have little or no training is difficult at best. If other dogs are flashpointing and then busting birds – or worse yet, blowing past your dog while it’s on point and flushing the birds – it’s hard to hold your dog accountable for its training, but it’s also necessary that you do so. At that point, put your dog back in the truck. Allowing your dog to constantly be subjected to out of control dogs doing all the things your dog is trained not to do is the quickest way for a seasoned dog to spiral out of control (even worse for the youngster). It’s a lot like letting your children play with other children who have no real rules of behavior; pretty soon, your kids are misbehaving, too. Hunting with a friend with a trained dog is by far the better idea, but even then there can be some competitiveness between the dogs. Make sure to hold your dog accountable for the level of training it has received. In an honor situation, make sure that if your dog is the honor dog, it stays put; and if your dog has the point and the other dog should break, enforce the steadiness in your dog. Taking other hunters and dogs out of the equation still leaves a lot that can go wrong. Wild birds are far more exciting than training birds, whether pigeons or penraised gamebirds. Because we never know how many there are in a given area, the sheer numbers (should you be so lucky!) can be overwhelming. Sometimes even the most veteran hunter will lose it when 40 pheasants fly up out of a fencerow at the end of a field, or a large covey of quail burst from the cover like popcorn. While situations like that don’t happen as often as we would like these days, the can and do occur. The good news from a training standpoint is that it’s not too likely It always seems to start this way: You’ve spent the summer training, and your dog is fit and ready to go. The first few hunts are wonderful, with your dog working to the level of the training you’ve done, and you’re busting your buttons with pride. And then the wheels fall off. Your dog starts making mistakes. It may be a few minor infractions, or it may be something big, like breaking and chasing as you walk in to flush. No matter the reason, it is frustrating for sure, particularly with the seasoned dog that should know better (look for an article elsewhere in this issue that focuses just on “rookie mistakes”). And now, with bird season in full swing, you’re worried. Will other things fall apart? Why, all of a sudden, is your dog making mistakes? It’s important to realize that all dogs make mistakes. Every single one of them will at some point, and they will make them throughout their lives. And the really high drive, ambitious dogs may make more than the average dog, just by virtue of their over-the-top desire. It can be easy for a dog to let their instincts override their training, and they temporarily forget who they work for. So, for starters, don’t be quick to judge your dog for screwing up, because they all do it. What we do need to do is evaluate the situation, figure out the reason for the infraction, and then fix it. It’s important to recognize that there is no way – in a training situation – that we can replicate the excitement of hunting. And it doesn’t take dogs long to figure out when you’re just training versus the real thing. They will react to training situations with a calmer, more workmanlike attitude because it’s just a drill and they know it. Remember having fire drills in grade school? We knew what there were and what we had to do. Now imagine the difference in the excitement level had there been a real fire! At that 6 to happen over and over, so while your dog may be pretty excited and you may need to give a gentle reminder on the next find, it shouldn’t cause too much trouble in the long run. Another problem that can crop up is dogs wanting to self-hunt once they’ve found a few birds and excitement escalates. That is, they want to go off in their own direction, and you are welcome to follow them if you can keep up. Again, if you’ve done your homework during the off-season and your dog understands the e-collar cues, it doesn’t take too much to get the dog “going with you” again. Often, this can be headed off altogether by following the same routine at your hunting spot that you do at home during training. For us, it’s the chain gang while we’re getting our gear on, then a short walk on the lead to make sure the dog is paying attention and acknowledging us rather than pulling ahead and being distracted. A couple of minutes of “pay attention to me” time at the start can save you a lot of frustration as the day goes on. Allowing a dog to run around loose and on its own right before we start hunting lets the dog think they are somewhat in charge of things. As explained by our counterparts in the rookie-mistakes article, this “free-wheeling,” as they call it, at the beginning of the hunt is one of the most common 7 mistakes for first timers. But the old dogs aren’t’ immune, either. Many times, they think they know better anyway. Retrieving is another thing that can fall apart as the season progresses. If you’re working with a dog that is retrieving naturally with no formal training, some will stay consistent and others will often get so excited about finding birds that they either drop the bird halfway to you, or run to it as it falls and then ignore it if it’s dead, preferring to go find more live birds rather than retrieving. For these dogs, put a good trained retrieve, or force-fetch, program on your to-do list when hunting is done for the season. For the dog that has been through a formal retrieve training regimen, be sure to be consistent in your expectations and uphold the standard to which the dog has been trained. If you let little things slide, they can quickly turn into bad habits. One example of this is the dog that doesn’t hold the birds until you have your hand on it and give the release command. Instead, the dog drops the bird as you reach for it. Stop right there, use the “fetch” command, and make the dog pick it up and hold it. To reinforce this, have the dog walk at heel for a few steps while holding the bird. Stop, reach for the bird, and take your hand back before you touch it. Make the dog continue to hold until you reach back again and have a grip on the bird. Then allow the dog to release it. The flip side is a dog that brings you the bird but doesn’t want to give it up – or worse yet, decides halfway back that it wants to a snack. Again, a good trained retrieve program fixes this and gives you the tools to correct it. But what if you haven’t gotten that far in your training? For the dog that wants to stop and pull feathers or munch on the bird, the “here” command is your best fix. If you can catch the dog as it starts to slow down on the recall and instead make it come to you faster, it can’t stop and rip up your bird. The dog that won’t let go needs to learn that it has no choice. If the dog is on your left, run your left hand down the dog’s left shoulder and back to the flank area. Grab the flap of skin where the hind leg attaches to the belly, and lift the dog’s hindquarters by that skin. Your dog will drop the bird, mainly because it wants to bite whatever just pinched its skin, so watch your hand. Most of the mid-season problems are easily fixed by giving your dog gentle reminders and holding it accountable for the level of training you’ve done. Don’t let little things slide because you’re in a hurry, since little infractions can become big ones in a heartbeat. Keep your standards high and expect no less from your dog. You’ll be rewarded with a lot better performance on those crisp fall days in the field with your canine partner. Brace 1 Kid and Haley. Kid and Haley blazed the inaugural trail for the 2014 Western All-Age Futurity class, starting out in the greasewood flats of the Mojave, over the rock covered hills of Chukar Alley, back into the southern flats and finally back along the eastern edge of the desert course. A brace of professional handlers had the whistles; Paul Doiron with Kid and Wayne Downs handling Haley. Kid was the more forward and focused of the pair, he stayed to the front, responding well for his age and seeking likely objectives. He was rewarded with two finds in his half hour, he showed great intensity and style and manners that will likely have him in adult stakes soon. Haley was more erratic in application but showed improvement as she familiarized with the grounds. Her prey drive was displayed well when she pursued and caught a Chukar over the first ridge entering the alley. Kid’s performance garnered him a well deserved placement in the stake. Brace 2 Ryan and Ginger. This half brother and sister pair was amateur handled; Tom White capably piloted Ryan around the course and Joe Gower blew the whistle for Ginger. Ryan had a reasonably controlled race and handled very well for Tom. He made some good allage moves but his search on course for game was for naught. However, This is a reminder that the ABC membership dues the two judges were interested enough to call Ryan back for a point after will be raised beginning January 1, 2016. the running. As a college teacher I fully understand the popularity of any assignment that requires little preparation on the part of instructors and students. Nevertheless, through the years I’ve begun to mull over that same subject with a certain amount of remorse. Perhaps the title “What I Did Not Do Last Summer” is more suitable for mid-August 2010. a “Yum-Yum” coffee shop, pile into the dog-mobile, and get onto the grounds when the mercury is still in the 70s and the scenting conditions for the canines are still pretty good. By nine a.m. on most mornings, you’re finished. Of course turning dog-training trips into mini-vacations makes them fun, too. With (scorching!) afternoons free, we took trips to local museums and historic sites. Our motel was an easy ride from Valley Forge, for example, and we got a much better picture of the turbulent times in which the American Revolution took place. Just as you have to live in Southold awhile to appreciate Meigs raid, it helps to have dinner in the former Red Lion Inn, now McCools restaurant in Quakertown, to understand Fries rebellion, the bitter protest that grew out of post-war antiBritish, anti-tax sentiment in 1799. The things I wanted to do were on a list I wrote back in June: open water swimming, cycle rides, hikes, a bunch of fishing trips, and, of course, lots of reading and correspondence. Pretty much all of this went by the boards, so there have to be excuses. One good excuse: upstate rains through much of the summer kept the lawns growing right through August. We never had the luxury of letting the grass brown for three weeks; even cutting the lawns on a 10-day schedule, the windrows of cut grass have been ugly. Another excuse: summer teaching proved more challenging than I’d anticipated, but I needed to develop fresh notes, whether or not my students appreciated them. And finally: disconnecting myself completely from voice mail and those dreaded e-mails from my university proved impossible. Going on line from remote sites was slow and frustrating, and getting through the junk in the mailbox was worse than cleaning out our horse barn twice a day. Also administrative messages don’t compost. A look at our calendar tells me I’ll be teaching again in less than two weeks. With such a short time left, a couple of approaches to “the rest of the summer” come immediately to mind. Do we want to cram a lot of stuff into those final days and turn them into an outdoor whirlwind, or, instead, should we turn the page on the calendar and assemble gear for the fall ahead? The shotguns need checking, the boots need a good cleanup, and much of our surf gear has gone untouched since it was put away. There are lures to be put in surf bags, reels to be oiled and rod wraps to check. Hopefully the old hip boots and chest-high waders have neither pinholes nor leaky seams! Dog training took up much of the summer, too. We’ve always had pointing dogs (Brittanys) but never so many competitive dogs all at the same time. With a couple of older dogs competing for their championships and a couple of promising pups needing training for fall field trials, our field season, for the very first time, never paused in the summer. We wound up joining a club with great facilities, including pens of bobwhite quail for release, manicured grounds with long grassy edges to help the dogs run directly to the front, and a fleet of four-wheelers to ride. In addition, getting the dogs into shape for the season ahead we got lots of tips from professional and amateur trainers who worked their pointers and setters, viszlas and brits at the same time. The situation was ideal for us, the summer membership fee was quite reasonable, but there was one huge problem. The club was 420 miles away in lower Bucks County in southeastern Pennsylvania! We made six trips, five days each including travel, and effectively carved at more than a month out of the summer. Probably the latter approach is the best one. Naturally that means making lists of repairs and gear for the autumn season. First of all, without even looking remorsefully at the old summer list, we’ll tear it in little pieces and discard it! sports@timesreview.com Naturally, summer temperatures in the mid-Atlantic region also present challenges. If someone had told us decades ago that we could run dogs in a location that featured daily highs in the 90s, we’d have told them they were absolutely crazy. Still, you do what you have to do in the outdoors. If you need to start the day before dawn you grab coffee and homemade doughnuts in 32 SPECIALTY SHOWS GREATER INDIANAPOLIS 12-18 Month Junior Dogs 1 - RIVERMIST BROXDEN UPLAND GAMER, o Peggy M. Kudos to Julie & Mike Lee for providing breakfast for all exhibitors. Many thanks to the NVBC members who sponsored trophies at the Specialty and the Supported entry shows. The BOB and BOS trophies were hand crafted, inlaid wooden tack boxes made by Paul Drazek. Our judge remarked how beautiful they were, saying she would use one as a jewelry box. Our day was wrapped up by a potluck luncheon and general membership meeting. Bill Landress, better known as a field trailer, brought out his dual spirit as he came out to barbeque his famous tri tip…yummy! A delicious cake celebrated our members’ many new grand champions, show champions, obedience, rally and agility and title holders from this year. A raffle was put together by Dena Miller with help from Nancy Reardon and many others. Headed up by Joy Ory, the Special Item Raffles’s Clarisonic Skin Machine was won by a brand new CBC member! Thank you to all specialty committee members, especially Joy Ory who had a hand assisting in so many areas, and to all of the members and friends who came and to all who lent a helping hand to make it a successful event! It was typical Southern California May-gray weather… foggy, cool and gray in the morning with a touch of sunshine in the afternoon. Thanks to our trophy chair, Sue Richards, our trophies received many accolades from folks passing by. Personalized satchels with the winners’ pictures to be hand painted on were presented to our Best of Breed, Best of Opposite and Best of Winners. Baskets of colorful leads, dog bowls and, of course, toys rounded out the beautiful presentation of trophies. Nancy Reardon assisted the ring steward to be certain the correct trophies were handed out at the right time. The exhibitors enjoyed the traditional and delicious ringside hospitality that Leah Schirokoff generously brought. Donuts…yeah, Leah! Our Sweep’s judge, Pam Lambie, showed her experience as she judged all puppies and veterans. In puppy sweeps, she selected Caliah’s Moonlight Falls On Moses for Best Of Sweeps and Whisper Ridge Be Still My Heart for Best of Opposite Sex. She awarded Best Veteran in Sweepstakes to GCH DC Sanbar Castle Built On Legends JH and Veteran Sweepstakes Best of Opposite to CH Lone Oak’s Sovereign Delta JH. She thoroughly enjoyed all of the youngsters and oldsters. Our regular classes were judged by Dr. Daniel Dowling. He enjoyed our breed and, in Southern California, found many of the typie brittanys he looks for. It did not discourage the 59 entries from all over the country competing in the Northern New England Brittany Club Designated Specialty Show, which was the last day of the ABC Summer Specialty events. Raingear was necessary for handlers as waterfalls fell off the tent but the dogs looked great despite getting wet! It was not unusual to see pups in the Sweepstakes puddle-jumping, but they still showed off to Judge Kevin Flynn who was impressed by Magicbrit-Tonan Hope Lighting Thief, from New York, for Best in Sweepstakes. He chose New Hampshire representative, Jaci’s I Want Proof, for Best of Opposite. GCH/DC Triumphant’s Absolut’ On Ice (New Hampshire) got a welldeserved round of applause for Best in Veteran Sweepstakes as did CH Rao Tonan Midnight Madness (New York) for Best of Opposite proving a mature Britt still has the right stuff! Regular judging was turned over to Mrs. Betsy Horn Humber. She caused a major sensation with the Main contingent as she awarded the 5 point major and Best of Winners to Julie Harris and her youngster J & A’s Heart of Sumas. Reserve also stayed in New England with Horizon’s Prince Charming, owned by William Dub of Massachusetts. The Vermont entry owned by the Massie’s, Sippewissett’s Stella Cruise, took the 5 points for Winners Bitch with Reserve going to Twoemz A Girl Like Me, hailing from Pennsylvania. After a lunch break, the rain let up in time to let the specials shine! The double-sized ring was filled with the best of the best from coast to coast as they paraded for Best in Specialty. That title ad Group 3 went to GCH Triumphant’s Chances Are, proudly breeder/owner handled by Kristyn McCartney of Florida. Despite the weather, camaraderie and competition went hand in hand for a fine day. It was wonderful to see old friends and welcome new ones to our neck of the woods. The success of this show goes to a small core of dedicated club members and my thanks go to Peggy Aguiar, Linda McCartney-Roy, Priscilla Thibodeau, Art Hembrough, and Patty Godbout. It wouldn’t have happened without their efforts! Also, my appreciation to Ann Short, CMBC, for working out the details for the weekend. Your Report should be typed (double or triple-spaced) on regular size paper (8 ½ x 11) allowing at least 1” margins on either side. Condense the wording to not more than 3 typed pages or you’ll be edited. (See Details on Magazine Policy AB-February, 1977). Remember the fewer words can result in more pictures. 2 . Your chief concern is to report your club’s trial so effectively that anyone not present can visualize what went on. Particularly stress dog action. The work of four-footed characters takes precedence over the antics of two-legged people. 3. First Paragraph—Cover such details as where and when, weather, and what not. Anything out of the ordinary? This is where you can use some imaginative writing if you wish (see p.44 of AB – April ’77 Ozark trial). 4. Report on the winning dogs’ work in each stake, taking up one stake at a time. Even if you did follow it all yourself, riding in the gallery, it is best to get the “official” interpretation from the judges. Generally, judges take notes and can answer a reporter’s questions later at the conclusion of the stake. You may wish to condense or even eliminate what the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th-placed dogs did (all contained in summary anyhow). But if the judges mentioned any others deserving “honorable mention”… include their names. Sometimes just a mention is a matter of life or death. An owner may be wavering about continuing to campaign. 5. Concluding Paragraph—Work in the whatever “bouquets” should be thrown to the people responsible for the smooth running of the trial, but don’t go overboard. Generally, umbrella phrases are better than naming names. No hurt feelings if you inadvertently miss someone. The AB Magazine is being read by Brittany owners throughout the country, many of whom may never have been to a trial. If your report piques interest to attend next time, you’ve done a good public relations job for your Club. Your report may activate a potentially good member! 6. Stop—when you’ve said it all. When you’ve spelled out what the dogs did. Some photos (line-up of winners) mean more to most people than mere words. So deputize the photography assignment to a fellow Club member who can be depended on to get those photos. And…Good Luck!!! Motion Passed 50 None Held Back and Other Bird Dog Stories Part Four -Good and Evil By Tom Word Hilltop Hal The pointer Hilltop Hal was the darling of the field trial major circuit. Darling of his owner, the New York Financier Ambrose Bains. Darling of opposing owners, handlers and scouts. Anything but darling to his handler, the graying Alabama pro Bo Bradley. To Bradley, Hal was the devil incarnate, the most irksome canine ever to enter his kennel. It had not always been so. The handsome Hal had been Derby of the Year. In his first adult season he had come close to winning important stakes, but each time he had disappeared in the waning moments of his heat. Now, well into his second adult season, the pattern seemed indelible. Hal would begin with promise, find birds quickly, point them with style and manners and slash on for two more finds. And then he would vanish. In the next few hours or days, he would show up on the porch of some sharecropper, chewing a ham bone or playing with the kids, always five miles or more from his point of departure. Hal had been bred by the union Springs veterinarian Bill Clark, better known as the Puppy King, perhaps the only man in the field-trial game not rendered less solvent by it. Doc Clark had a system, and he did not vary from it. In a modest kennel behind his veterinary clinic, he raised a half dozen litters a year, sired by stud dogs he judged the best available, from brood matrons chosen for soundness of body and mind. Pups were sold at weaning, or after running loose a year on farms, their room and board bartered by Doc for his services to the farmers’ mules and milk cows. Doc never paid a vet bill or a training fee, and thus he profited where others lost their shirts. Stud services also came by barter, with only one exception: he had paid Ambrose Bains $600 for a service from Hilltop Hal, and the litter was due in January. Doc Clark was riding in the gallery when Hilltop Hal ran off for the tenth time in a row in the Lee County Open All-Age stake. “Bo, could I come watch Hal in a workout?” Doc asked. “Sure,” said Bo, near tears in his frustration, “but he won’t run off in a workout. Handles like a glove ‘til he see a field-trial gallery.” They arranged to meet at Sehoy Plantation where Bo sometimes worked his string with the famous plantation’s resident trainer. On a balmy December afternoon, the handlers turned loose Hal and Sehoy Sam, the plantation’s current brag dog, for a jaunt through the quail-laden piney woods. For an hour the two pointers traded finds; Hal showed no signs of bolting, just as Bo had predicted. Half way through the hour, Doc Clark figured out why Hal was disappearing in trials. He spent the second half of the hour plotting how best to profit from his detective work. “Thanks, boys. I enjoyed that. Good an hour as I’ve seen since Sehoy Sultan won the Continental,” Doc said as he left the two old pros washing down the lathered horses and headed for his clinic in Union Springs. “Mr. Bains’ office,” answered the snooty secretary. She put 51 Doc straight through to Ambrose Bains when she recognized the Alabama drawl and heard him say, “It’s about bird dogs, Mam.” “Hello, Doc. How are things in Union Springs?” came Bains’s Harvard-accented voice over the wire. Doc could hear shouts from the trading room in the background. “Just fine, Ambrose. Watched your Hal find five coveys this afternoon, not a bobble.” “Did he…finish?” Bains asked. “Sure he finished. No sign he wanted to run off…it was a workout, of course, over at Sehoy. When you comin’ down?” “I plan to come next week for the U.S. Trials.” “Well, when you get here come see me. I think I know what’s causin’ Hal to bolt.” Doc said it ever so casually, then waited for the effect. He could picture the tycoon at his desk, trying to process this bombshell. For months Bains had been obsessed with Hal’s problem. He loved the dog as much as he loved his money and deals… well almost as much. He’d gloated on the compliments during Hal’s sensational derby season. But for the last year and a half, the telephone call from Bo Bradley after each trial had brought the same message: “He run off after his third find.” Bradley had wanted to give up on Hal, but Bains had said, “No, he’ll get over it…just keep working him, enter him every chance you get, don’t worry about the entry fees.” Finally, Bains spoke into the phone. “I’ll see you first thing on the fifteenth at your office.” Ambrose Bains had never ended up on the short side of a bargain on Wall Street. But in the world of bird dogs, he knew he was no match for Doc Clark. He’d bought many a puppy from the veterinarian, and he couldn’t say he’d ever been cheated, but he knew he’d always paid top prices. It made him uncomfortable to deal with Doc Clark. The son of penhooker—a cattle trader who lived by his trading wits—Doc enjoyed nothing so much as picking the pockets of the rich Yankees who came to Union Springs in winter to shot quail. And yet it wasn’t picking pockets really, it was just getting value for his excellent pups, a hard thing to do from Southern buyers. When Doc drove home from his clinic on the evening of the fourteenth of December, he saw Ambrose Bains’ private jet on the airstrip. Next morning at 8:30, Bains arrived at the clinic. Doc walked him through the treatment room, with its strong smells of disinfectant and liniments, to his tiny office in back. Its cinder-block walls were covered to the ceiling with photos of bird dogs, the desk cluttered with medical texts. Doc cleared a stack of pedigrees from the guest chair and motioned Bains to take a seat, then sat behind the desk and began to load his pipe. The sound of barking patients filed the office like background music. From behind his pipe, Doc studied Bains’ expression: wary, impatient, nervous. Doc drew out the loading, tamping and lighting for four minutes, then finally spoke. “How is Mrs. Bains?” he asked. Bains replied she was fine. Doc moved the conversation to the entries at the U.S. Trials, to be drawn at Sedgefields Plantation on Sunday night. Finally Bains could stand it no longer. “Doc, let’s have it. What’s Hal’s problem?...I know it’s going to cost me to find out…name your price.” “Why Ambrose, you know I wouldn’t ask money to tell a man what’ the problem with a bird dog…a nonmedical problem, that is. I’m going to tell you exactly what Hal’s problem is and how to solve it, and I’m not going to ask for a thing for myself in return. “Well, tell me!” blurted Bains. “In good time, Ambrose. Don’t be so impatient.” Ambrose Bains now sensed that the secret of Hal’s bolting and its cure would cost him dearly. But he steeled himself against his own impatience and turned the conversation to a neutral subject. “Got any pups coming along?” “A few,” Doc said and walked the financier out to the kennels where three litters were busy nursing. A fourth brood matron was heavy in whelp. “She’s carrying your Hal’s pups. I’ve X-rayed her—she’s going to have eight.” After appropriate expressions of admiration for the pups, they returned to the little office, where Doc repeated the pipeloading ritual. That accomplished, Doc said: “Now let’s talk about Hal. What’s the secret worth to you?” But you just said you wouldn’t charge for that!” “That’s right, Ambrose. But I might condition telling you the secret on our agreement on another—very fair—transaction. How would you like to own that litter of Fancy Lady’s pups sired by your Hal that’s due in January?” “How much?” “A thousand each.” “That’s highway robbery.” “I don’t think so,” said Doc, “considering you charged me $600 for the stud fee. Bains knew $600 had been steep for a breeding to a dog with no wins since his derby season, a dog now notorious as a run-off. Yet Doc Clark had not protested. Bains now realized the old vet had been lying in wait for him like a highwayman. “All right. Now tell me what’s making Hal run off.” “First, let’s see your check for $8,000,” Doc said in a teasing voice. Reluctantly, Bains wrote the check and passed it across the desk. Doc took three Jefferson cups (puppy-stakes trophies) from the window ledge and lined them up on the desk under Bains’s nose. “The secret of Hal’s running off, and the cure, is under two of these cups. Which one do you want to lift first?” The financier reached for the cup farthest to his left. Before he could lift it, Doc clamped his hand on top. “That will cost you $100…for the treasury of the Dixie Puppy Classic, of course.” Bains forked over a $100 bill and lifted the cup—nothing. Like a carnival man running the shell game, Doc moved the cups around. “Want another choice?” 52 Bains handed over a second $100 bill and lifted the middle cup—again, nothing. Totally frustrated, Bains threw $500 on the desk. “That’s to lift all three at once.” “Be my guest,” Doc said, his expression deadpan. Under one cup lay a 12-gauge shotgun shell, and under another a 20-gauge. Bains looked at Doc Clark in puzzlement. “That’s your clues to the cause and the cure,” Doc said. “I don’t get it,” Bains said. Doc leaned back in his swivel chair. “I’ll tell you, but you’ve got to promise…to handle the cure exactly as I say, OK?” “Yes,” said Bains, sure this meant another hit at his wallet. “Bo Bradley is hard of hearing, like every son of Alabama who’s trained bird dogs for a living. So many shots have been fired around his hairy ears, he can’t tell the sound of a cap gun from a howitzer. He shoots over his dogs in trials with that old Remington ’97 twelve-gauge pump. It’s loose, and it sounds like a cannon.” “Your Hal’s not gun shy, but after Bo shoots over his head three times, his ears are ringing, and he doesn’t want to hear that boom again. So he takes off.” “Are you sure that’s it?” asked Bains, incredulous. “Yep,” said Doc. “Hal never runs off in workouts, ‘cause Bo shoots a .22 blank for his points in workouts. All you’ve got to do is give Bo a 20 gauge to shoot in trials—that little Parker you usually shoot.” “That gun’s worth $10,000. I’ll give him a single shot twenty—that’s all he needs.” “No—remember you agree to handle the cure exactly like I prescribed,” said Doc. That afternoon Ambrose Bains reluctantly presented Bo Bradley with the Parker from his collection of fine shotguns and confiscated the Model ’97. (Bo Bradley’s son helped with the shooting partied at Bains’s Hilltop Plantation, and Doc had seen the boy admire the Parker when he lifted it from the shooting wagon for Bains to carry to a point.) Hilltop Hal was never again out of judgement. MEMBERS OF THE AMERICAN BRITTANY CLUB Give the gift of a new membership… to give the opportunity to someone to learn about and participate in the American Brittany Club. This membership campaign is really quite simple, we are asking every member to donate/sponsor a membership in the American Brittany Club. This “gifted” membership might be to a puppy purchaser, or a friend/acquaintance who has a Brittany. All of us encounter people who may just need a little encouragement to become members. This can work, but it is totally dependent upon your support. Please use the ABC application form in the back of the magazine to enroll a new member today. You may donate/sponsor multiple new memberships. The names of new members & ABC sponsors will be published in the magazine on a quarterly basis. THIS IS OUR CHANCE TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE! 56 Listings: Kennels • At Stud • Trainers & Handlers The below listings of Kennels, At Stud and Trainers & Handlers does not constitute an endorsement by the American Brittany Club.
