Alas, those days are still not here. Yet, Clark County’s greatest guide to local watering holes returns for its third annual edition. This year’s guide is simplified, in a manner of speaking. We wanted the focus to be on the bars themselves, not our snarky two cents. After all, who cares what we think of the bars? The only opinion that counts is that of the fine beerand spirit-swilling patrons of SW Washington. Two years ago, I set Phillip Ossie Bladine out to learn about Clark County by Editor-in-Chief visiting every drinking establishment. It’s what I like to think of as the heart of SW Washington (though I’m sure MADD members cringe at the thought). So get out and explore the many options of boozy culture and drabble nightlife to be offered here. Life is short – spend it with friends. MUGGY AWA R D S BAR OF THE YEAR The Elbow Room M U G G Y Best of AWA R D S Bars... Best in Music, Best Happy Hour, Best Karaoke & More awards on page 10 www.VanVoice.com It is often an overlooked fact, but bars are first and foremost for drinking. While chasing tail, socializing, catching the scene and escaping the “real world” may all be wrapped into a trip to a drinking establishment, the important characteristic of bars, pubs and taverns is drinking. Thus, the 2010 bar of the year is The Elbow Room – because it is hands down the best place in town to just drink. Connected to Paul’s Restaurant,The Elbow Room sports a swank ‘70s lounge décor. There are no windows in the bar, allowing patrons to avoid distractions and focus solely on that draft beer, whiskey and coke, long island or Irish coffee in front of them (oh, how we love the Irish coffees). The jukebox is solid, there’s one flat screen for entertainment, and any and all pretension can be checked at the door. Also, it’s no secret that a major reason for downtown Vancouver’s love affair with The Elbow Room is its gracious bartender, Jen. To wit: she once bought over a hundred gifts for her customers to hand out during her annual Christmas Eve gathering. To wit: she has missed only one Friday night in the four years she has bartended there. To wit: she rules. The greatest thing about The Elbow Room, and fitting for this year’s top bar honors, is that it walks the line of classy joint and lowbrow dive bar. It’s a line most bars teeter off to one side or another, but The Elbow Room walks that line with style and grace. To you, dear Elbow Room, we toast. 3 2 0 1 0 . s e l o H g n ri te a l W a c YouLro r rinkon! In bar guides of past, The Voice has used the term “dive” to describe certain bars of Clark County. We have since received word that certain bar owners of said establishments have not appreciated the term, considering it slanderous slang. This could not be further from the truth. When we give the label “dive” to a bar, it is done so with more than a touch of deference. While dive bars can get the stigma as scuzzy and rotten, the overlying fact is they are an essential part of our lives that we hold near and dear to our hearts. The 2010 Playboy Guide to America’s Greatest Bars summed it up best: “A church fordown-and-outersandthosewhoromanticize them, a rare place where high and low rub elbows — bums and poets, thieves and slumming celebrities. It’s a place that wears its history proudly.” So, to smooth things over (hopefully), we present to all this peace offering of a poem for the dive bars. r, the ba n o e c a ear, out, f estery y d e s m s a o ,p AR, lls fr asleep NASC on wa f s o in A man a s t t h e. co s highlig sincer e s y Tobac it a l u p q be that’s the tu g hole in g All day in l ill-s int sw Endeared dive bars, A qua Poem by Ossie Bladine please heed the words we write, We cheers! your echarm, relaxed, booz t. igh filled del iStockP hoto.c om – Wine in Clark County: An urban-rural connection WINE EXTRA Clark County’s wine scene is on the The Vancouver Voice Bar Guide October 2010 up and up. For one, wineries continue to produce grapes and wine in the north part of the county. Most recently, Heisen House Vineyards opened for business in the past year. Five years in themakingandlocated on a national and state historic site in Hockinson,Heisenadds to what’s becoming a vital part of Clark County business and culture. From bocce ball tournaments at English Estate Winery, to movies on the lawn at Rusty Grape, to some of the best concerts of the year (East Fork Cellars, for one, has become one of the area’s topentertainmentvenues, spearheadedbythe Tim Dawdy Variety Show), our local wineries 12 invite all to enjoy good times in some of Clark County’s most majestic settings. But it’s not just a rural thing. The wine industry here bridges the gap between rural and urban living, bringing its fermented grape juice loveliness to our downtowns for urbanites to enjoy. There are retail businesses like Evergreen Wine Cellars and Gougér Cellars. There are restaurants like La Botegga serving the needs of local winos, as well as events like Uptown Village’s annual Sip and Stroll. And, finally, wine bars are popping up, liketherecentlyopenedNiche Wine and Art in downtown Vancouver. Nestled in a beautiful urban bar setting right next to historic KigginsTheater, Niche offers great food, plenty of vino and friendly banter (it’s also The Voice’s favorite place to wind down after work, being just a stone’s throw away and all). Clark County vineyards often glow elegance and beauty.
