emerging Creative Capitals.

experimentation in the forms
of dance, music, film, cuisine
and technology. As culture and
creativity become recognized
as driving forces in this global
economy, how will this inform
future urban agendas?
The American dream is a notion
that has inspired the development and grow th of cities across

Since the mid-19th century, the
World’s Fair has been a breeding ground for innovations in
architecture, civil & structural
engineering, and infrastructure.
Three of these cities have hosted
ast World’s Fairs, establishing
precedents and providing some of
the most memorable structures
of the last few centuries. One
of these cities has yet to host a
World’s Fair, but represents a
future city on the cusp of a new
world order, with a potential
for unrivaled innovation.
Empires throughout time and all
over the world have had not only
a local impact on the imperial
city (the seat of power) but also
a global impact on settlement
patterns, national borders,
cultural identity, and city form.
But empires have a lifespan.
It is interesting to look at the
precedent of past empires to
understand how a former world
power adjusts to a new identity.

DC is the second park to be
featured in our Garden Plate
series. Originally envisioned by
Pierre Charles L’Enfant during
the earliest days of the new
republic, and brought to fruition
a century later by Frederick
Law Olmsted and the McMillan
Commission, this ribbon of urban
greenery stretches from the U.S.
Capitol to the Potomac River,
and includes many of the nation’s most-visited monuments,

above sea level (the average
altitude of a transcontinental
flight), the Sky dinner plate
and the COnstellation Salad
plates represents a different
perspective: from the surface
of the earth looking up… above
and beyond the clouds.
The only decoration on the
dinner plate is the linear trace
of contrails. Look carefully
and you might even find a
plane caught mid flight.

the stars as we see them in
