Eden Stone Company and Valders Stone & Marble, Inc. are proud to announce the completion of the College of Sciences project at Beloit College in Beloit, WI. It is always an honor to work on projects of this caliber, but it is especially gratifying to have a showcase like this within our own state. The successful completion of the project was the result of a partnership between two design firms and two contractors. Holabird & Root LLC from Chicago completed the design of the building, and its predecessor during the mid 20th century. Denver based, Civitas, designed the landscape elements that blended the new structure with the existing campus. The LEED® Platinum facility has won several design and construction awards, and was constructed through a partnership between J.H. Findorff & Son, Inc. and Klobucar Construction. The entire landscape package features Valders Buff Dolomitic Limestone. This material was shaped into several different forms and finishes to custom create seating, retaining walls, and other elements. The area surrounding the Beloit College campus is rich with Native American history. To pay homage to the city’s roots, Valders Stone produced specialty “Council Rings” that help symbolize the bond between people and nature. Native plants and trees were planted around these areas to help promote conservation, and add to the college’s curriculum. Throughout the year you can find students enjoying this space, and teachers conducting classes. Thank you to the Beloit College and all of our trade partners that made this prestigious local project a success. www.valdersstone.com “My gratitude to you and your staff for providing my geology class the opportunity to visit and observe your quarries and their operation, and for making the visit both easy and meaningful.” - Jeffrey Brown University of Wisconsin, Manitowoc Stone Tip of the Day Q: How do I choose the best stone for my climate? A: Your project’s geographic location will put different climatic stresses on your stone. A building façade in Canada will have to be resistant to the effects of different freezing and thawing cycles. A pool deck in Arizona will require a material that does not hold on to the sun’s heat and scorch bare feet. Fortunately for our clients, Eden and Valders natural stone materials perform well from Siberia to the Sahara. 20th Anniversary Over the last century,Valders Stone & Marble, Inc. has grown and changed dramatically. The company began as a producer of lump lime and crushed materials for various markets. Health and Safety Tips We are well aware of the heat wave sweeping the country this year. Not only does the severe heat and drought play an important role on crop yields, it also plays an important role on anyone who relies on making a living while working outdoors! For those who have no other choice but to work through the dog days of summer, here are a few safe work practices to keep in mind: • Work/Rest Cycles • Stay hydrated by drinking water often • Wear reflective clothing • Rotate job functions among workers to help eliminate too much heat exposure • Physical demands should be reduced during hot weather, and increased during cooler times of the day *Tips provided by OSHA The extreme heat is just another reason to purchase natural stone.
