Loop system A loop system is available in all Ashfield Homes reception areas. A loop system is designed to assist a person with a hearing aid to hear more clearly in a room by switching their hearing aid to the T position. Minicom A service user can contact Ashfield Homes on Minicom using the number: (01623) 608989 Minicom is a text-phone telephone service for people who are deaf, hard of hearing or have speech difficulties. Language line offer: • • • Telephone Interpreting Face to face interpreting Text translation. Using the Language Line Service As a rule when you telephone language line, you will need to tell them: • Your access code. • The name of your organisation • Your name • The language you need • If the person is with you Telephone Interpreting Face-to-Face calls There are five stages to Face-to-Face calls • Identify the language Use the language line poster or leaflet on receptions to do this. • Collect your details together (as shown above in using the language line service) • Ring Language Line 0845 310 9900 • Brief the Interpreter: You will need to tell the interpreter who you are whether you will be using one handset to be passed between you give them as much detail about the situation as possible. • Use direct Speech when using an interpreter speak as though you are talking directly to the customer maintain eye contact with the customer. The interpreter will start speaking as soon as you pass the phone to the customer. Telephoning a Non-English Speaking Customer You will need the following information before contacting Language Line • Your access code. • • • • The name of your organisation Your name The language you need You will also need the telephone number of the person you want to contact Ring Language Line 0845 310 9900 • • • • Inform the Language line operator the customer is NOT with you Brief the interpreter You are then connected to the person you are wanting to ring Follow the same rules as when making Face to Face calls If a non-English speaking person rings your office take their • • • Name Number Language tell them you will ring them back, then ring language line and follow the same procedure as Telephoning a non-English speaking customer Other Services Provided By Language Line Face to face with an interpreter present • • • • Book interpreter using 0845 310 9900 Brief the interpreter before their visit provide as much information as possible On the day of the meeting arrange seating in triangular position with you facing the client and the interpreter off to side Introduce the interpreter to the customer give them a few minutes for the interpreter to let the customer know they are unbiased and what their role will be. REMEMBER: use “you” and “I” rather than “him” or “her”. Use short statements, speak slowly, naturally and clearly & keep the conversation as natural as possible.
