SWEDEN FINLAND STOCKHOLM: Swedish capital since the 13th century. Built on 14 islands connected by 57 bridges. Home to 2 million people, the Nobel Prize, 70 museums and both H&M and IKEA. The longest day of the year (21 June) sees 20 hours of sunlight and the shortest (22 December) less than six. HIST2316-H DR.NICHOLSON 1 7 - 2 4 M AY 2 0 1 6 This engaging section of HIST 2316 offers students an overview of world history from a Nordic perspective. Readings focus on the social and cultural history of Scandinavia with an emphasis on the rise of the modern welfare state. The study abroad portion includes tours of historical sites in Stockholm and Helsinki as well as visits to local schools. Course projects will be tailored to student interests. HELSINKI: Founded by Sweden’s King Gustav Vasa in 1550. Finland’s capital city is also its cultural center. Expect chilly weather, May averages 42F. Finns love Aku Ankka (Donald Duck) comics, but a squirrel is the city mascot. HIST 2316 CRN 21773 This is a fully online course requiring no prerequisite. Honors students must complete additional assignments for Honors credit. The final project requires research in Sweden and Finland. Students need permission from Dr. Nicholson to register for the course. The cost of the trip is $2800. Study abroad scholarships are available to students enrolled in HIST 2316.
