Rewarding Lives Our Partner Universities Edinburgh Business School, Heriot-Watt University Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh, Scotland, is the eighth-oldest higher education institution in the United Kingdom originating as the School of Arts of Edinburgh in 1821. It received its university charter in 1966. The name commemorates George Heriot – the 16th century financier to King James, and James Watt – the great 18th century inventor and engineer. The Edinburgh Business School boasts one of the world’s largest Masters of Business Administration programmes, offered on-campus or around the world by distance education, and assessed by rigorous subject exams. As one of the world’s leading business and management schools, Edinburgh Business School offers students a rigorous and rewarding programme of study. Whether MBA, MSc or DBA, the courses are among the most sought after in the business world and the qualifications among the most highly regarded. The School has a 21-year history of delivering MBAs, both by distance learning and through a network of 25 Approved Learning Partners across the world – a truly global programme that now has 12,000 graduates and 8,000 active students. Founded in 1854, the Watt Club is the oldest alumni association in the UK. The Watt Club now incorporates Heriot-Watt University’s Alumni Association and has branches as far afield as Australia, Norway and the USA. Membership of the Watt Club is automatic on graduation and free to all graduates of Heriot-Watt. On January 29th, 2010, the Caribbean Chapter of the alumni association was launched at the Trinidad Hyatt in Port of Spain. Professor Keith Lumsden, Academic Director, Edinburgh Business School, Heriot-Watt University The University of Greenwich is home to a thriving community of over 23,000 students of all ages. Students from over 140 countries choose to study at Greenwich, part of an international student community of 4,000. The University traces its roots to 1890, when Britain’s second polytechnic was opened near the Thames at Woolwich to teach practical and commercial skills to London workers. An innovator from the start, the polytechnic pioneered the country’s first part-time day-release and sandwich courses. Over the years a range of specialist organisations have joined the institution, giving it diverse strengths in subjects such as Teacher Training, Architecture, Engineering and History. The name Thames Polytechnic was adopted in 1970. The institution became the University of Greenwich when it was awarded university status in 1992. Since the 19th century, the University has expanded from a technical institution to a regional leader, teaching a range of subjects across engineering, natural sciences, social sciences, humanities and business. Its research focus is applied science with strong links to the scientific community. The University has three campuses: Avery Hill, in the south-east London district of Eltham; Greenwich, in the historic London borough; and Medway, which is in Chatham Maritime, Kent. Students benefit from a research environment where staff share their expertise and specialist facilities. Greenwich sets high standards for teaching quality and provides professional training opportunities for all lecturers. Professor Martin J. Snowden BSc, MSc, PhD, CSi, CChem, FRSC - Pro-Vice-Chancellor for the Faculty of Engineering & Science, University of Greenwich Professor Mayur K. Patel, Director for International Computing Collaborations and Professor of Computational Science and Engineering, University of Greenwich Dr. Ulke Veersma Senior Lecturer, International HRM, University of Greenwich Graduation Celebration - Class of 2015 University of Greenwich Great Learning . Rewarding Lives 3 4 Graduation Celebration - Class of 2015 Great Learning . Rewarding Lives Our Partner Universities University of Leicester The University of Leicester was founded in 1921 and received its Royal Charter and degree-awarding powers in 1957. Located in the East Midlands of England, it has a high national and international profile and is engaged in leading-edge research and high quality teaching. It is consistently ranked in the top 15 universities in the UK and was positioned 161st globally by the Times Higher in 2013. The University of Leicester’s levels of student satisfaction have been consistently in the top-10 since the annual National Student Survey commenced in 2005 and was ranked top after Oxbridge in the 2011 survey amongst 120 mainstream public universities in the UK. The University has approximately 21,000 registered students: around 14,000 of them studying full-time and 7,000 studying parttime and/or at a distance. The research conducted by the University has the strongest impact of any UK Midlands university measured by citations per academic and is worldleading in many disciplines. Professor Martin Halliwell, Deputy Pro-Vice-Chancellor (International), University of Leicester University of Sunderland The University of Sunderland is located in Sunderland, North East England. The University has more than 17,500 students, including 7,000-plus international students from some 70 countries. Sunderland’s motto is Scientiam Dulce Hauriens which translates ‘Sweetly absorbing knowledge’. The University’s roots can be traced back to 1901, when Sunderland Technical College was established as a municipal training college on Green Terrace. It was the first to offer sandwich courses. Naval architecture and pharmacy were introduced between the two World Wars. Sunderland Polytechnic was established on January 1, 1969, incorporating the Technical College, the School of Art (which was also established in 1901) and the Sunderland Teacher Training College (established in 1908). In 1992 the Polytechnic gained University status. The University has been providing higher education in the city since 1901. The key to this longevity is its ability to adapt to change - something that former Education Secretary Estelle Morris highlights: Great Learning . Rewarding Lives 5 Professor Julie Mennell, Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic), University of Sunderland Dr. Robert Trimble, Dean of the Faculty of Business and Law, University of Sunderland Graduation Celebration - Class of 2015 “The University is extremely good at adapting - constantly seizing new agendas and changing with society...when new ideas are announced academia trails in their wake, taking too long to adjust but Sunderland takes its opportunities and leads the field.” This approach has led to many awards and the University is regularly asked to pilot new Government initiatives and projects. 6 Graduation Celebration - Class of 2015 Great Learning .
