ACTION/SCI-FI
PACIFIC RIM (P13)
A little boy from a dying planet is sent to Earth.
Little does he realise he possesses extraordinary
powers stronger than any found on his new
planet. Being the first non-American to play the
role of the well-loved superhero, Henry Cavill
elegantly portrays Superman who sets out to
save the world from annihilation against the
formidable foe General Zod. Despite the mixed
reviews the movie has garnered, it has proven
a major hit with a fantastic worldwide gross and
favourable reception throughout. Unlike many of
the older Superman films, there are many things
that differentiate this one. A British actor playing
the lead for the first time, the inclusion of other
DC comic characters and then the not-so-obvious
‘easter egg’.
Starring: Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, Russell Crowe,
Kevin Costner, Michael Shannon, Diane Lane,
Christopher Meloni
Running time: 2 hr 34 mins
A war between the Kaiju and mankind has
begun. A destructive weapon is devised to save
the millions of lives at stake. The Jaegars, giant
robots controlled by two pilots whose minds are
intertwined by a neural bridge, are the only hope.
But even these robotic saviours are defenceless
against the merciless Kaiju.
Starring: Charlie Hunnam, Rinko Kikuchi, Idris Elba,
Robert Kazinsky
Running time: 2 hr 26 mins

TROOPERS. Starring Tom
Cruise and Emily Blunt, Edge
of Tomorrow is much more
than your trite and clichéd
alien invasion action flick.
With characters whose
stories you’ll be highly
invested in and jaw-dropping
special effects, this is one not
to be missed.
When William Cage, a
military PR major with no
knowledge of actual combat
is thrown in at the deep end
to help fight off the Earth’s
alien invaders, it turns out to
be the first day of the rest of
his eternity. Cage gets lucky
on his first day on the job and
kills one of the alien ‘mimics’,
which sprays him with an
acid-like blood. When Cage
then dies on the battlefield,
he reawakens at the start of
his first day’s military training
and so begins his cycle of
restarting each time he dies
while fighting the aliens.
Taken under the wing of
hard-nosed Sergeant Rita
Vrataski, Cage’s knowledge
of his opponents and his
combat skills improve with
each day that he is forced to
relive in the ongoing struggle
against the invaders. in the
quest for freedom.
Live. Die. Repeat.
Following his successful
roles in Jack Reacher and
Oblivion, Cruise is quickly
reinventing himself as a
solid leading man of the
action movie genre. Cruise
is working hard to cast aside
the two stereotypes that
have plagued him his whole
career – that he is too short
to be believable in action
roles and that his summer
blockbusters will flop.
Under the directorial
guidance of Bourne trilogy
executive producer, Doug
Liman, Cage’s ongoing battle
with figuring out not only
how to beat the aliens, but
break the time loop cycle will
leave you gasping for more
popcorn throughout.

THIS GROUND-BREAKING
NARRATIVE MEMOIR
received international
acclaim by critics and
audiences for its direction,
screenplay, production
value and its faithfulness
to Solomon Northup’s
memoir. The movie quickly
gained popularity with its
stellar cast and impressive
cinematography. Sometimes
difficult to watch but a true
history of the slavery era
in the United States, the
movie brilliantly captures the
sentiments and emotion from
the time. With immaculate
attention to detail, the film
garnered many awards and
was highly acclaimed by
critics.
The blockbuster hit movie
earned three Academy
Awards, including Best
Picture. It received a Golden
Globe Award for Best
Motion Picture – Drama
and also took home the
BAFTA Award for Best
Film. Chiwetel Ejiofor also
brought home the award
for Best Actor in his role as
Solomon Northup. Lupita
Nyong’O who played Patsey,
the young slave girl, was also
nominated for her role.
The writer for this
emotional film, John Ridley,
was residing in Amsterdam
where Anne Frank was a
national hero. When he read
the book, he knew that the
story needed to be heard
and so the screenplay was
born. Backed by Brad Pitt’s
production company, Plan
B Entertainment, and with a
budget of US$20million, the
film grossed highly at the box
office with US$178,417,961.
The elegant music scores
were composed by Hans
Zimmer, composer for the
Pirates of the Caribbean
movies and more.
After the Oscar wins,
both Steve McQueen
(producer) and John
Ridley (screenplay writer)
got into a feud over the
screenplay credit. McQueen
was denied his share and
Ridley was vindicated by
Fox Searchlight, the film
distributor. This was later
denied by Ridley bringing the
debate to an end.

Man of Steel
UNLIKE ITS
PREDECESSORS, this
remake of the Superman
movie takes a step back
in time to the origin of the
famous superhero. Initially
slated to be shot in 3D,
director Zack Snyder was
determined to keep the
shoot in 2D and was then
later convinced into 3D
for the release. This is the
first film that intended to
share the fictional cinematic
universe with other DC comic
characters. There were also
other firsts that joined the
DC comic characters. Henry
Cavill, the twenty-seven
year old Brit who played
the Man of Steel is the first
non-American actor to
have played the kryptonitesensitive superhero.
Grace Hill Media, a
Christian-based marketing
firm was enlisted to spread
the Christian themes of the
film. Free will, sacrifice, and
God-given purposes made
up for the religious themes
that were included in the
film. The Washington Post
states: “Man of Steel isn’t just
a movie. It’s a Bible study in
a cape.”
While many raved about
the film’s narrative, acting,
visuals, and reinvention
of the characters, others
were neither as keen on
the film’s pacing nor poor
character development.
Despite the critics, and the
backlash, however, Zack
Snyder’s movie was a major
success at the box office,
grossing US$687,999,518
worldwide. The profitable
movie will see a sequel in the
near future that will feature
the mysterious Batman
along with the Amazonian
demigod, Wonder Woman.
It is currently in the works for
release on May 6, 2016.

The movie features an
A-team of visual directors,

of US$114 million in China,
their biggest market. The big
names include Oscar winners
John Knoll and Hal T. Hickel

Besides the awardwinning designers and
