Cage gets lucky on his first day on the job and kills one of the alien ‘mimics’, who sprays him with an acid-like blood. When Cage then dies on the battlefield, he reawakens at the start of his first day’s military training and so begins his cycle of restarting each time he dies. Alongside hero Sergeant Rita Vrataski, Cage’s knowledge of his opponents and his combat skills improve with each day that he is forced to relive in the ongoing struggle. This true story tells the tale of his abduction from liberty as he is subsequently pushed into a life of slavery. Deciding that the best way for him to survive is to co-operate, he suffers all the atrocities and challenges of an imprisoned worker of the time. However, facing cruelty and unexpected kindness, Solomon goes on a mission to stay alive while sustaining his dignity at all costs. In the final year of his story, Solomon’s life changes after meeting a Canadian abolitionist who rescues and delivers him from his hellish life and his 12 years as a slave. Little does he realise he possesses extraordinary powers stronger than any found on his new planet. Being the first non-American to play the role of the well-loved superhero, Henry Cavill elegantly portrays Superman who sets out to save the world from annihilation against the formidable foe General Zod. Despite the mixed reviews the movie has garnered, it has proven a major hit with a fantastic worldwide gross and favourable reception throughout. Unlike many of the older Superman films, there are many things that differentiate this one. A British actor playing the lead for the first time, the inclusion of other DC comic characters and then the not-so-obvious ‘easter egg’. Starring: Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, Russell Crowe, Kevin Costner, Michael Shannon, Diane Lane, Christopher Meloni Running time: 2 hr 34 mins A war between the Kaiju and mankind has begun. A destructive weapon is devised to save the millions of lives at stake. The Jaegars, giant robots controlled by two pilots whose minds are intertwined by a neural bridge, are the only hope. But even these robotic saviours are defenceless against the merciless Kaiju. Starring: Charlie Hunnam, Rinko Kikuchi, Idris Elba, Robert Kazinsky Running time: 2 hr 26 mins SPORTS HOUSE OF GLORY (U) Born Juan Carols Galliano in Gibraltar – he is now known to the fashion world simply as ‘John Galliano’. Arriving in London aged six, he went on to graduate from the prestigious Central St. Martin’s School of Art. His senior show received rave reviews, though he never anticipated making fashion history by being the first British designer in charge of a French couture house. Running time: 24 mins Take a look at some of the stadiums that have played a major part in the history of the Olympic Games including Olympiastadion in Reichssportfeld, London’s Olympic Stadium lauded for its sustainable development - and Panathinaic Stadium in Athens, Greece. Of course, it is over a woman. Sally, who Razor was seeing at the time cheats on him with The Kid and winds up pregnant, thus Razor decides to retire rather than fight him one last time. A fun movie that throws some good punches. Starring: Robert De Niro, Sylvester Stallone, Kim Basinger, Rich Little, Ireland Baldwin, Anthony Anderson, Mason Mackie, Kevin Hart Running time: 2 hrs 5 mins POLITICS CORY AQUINO: THE HOUSEWIFE WHO LED A REVOLUTION (U) Nobody would have guessed that Cory Aquino would become the first female president of the Philippines. But in 1986, this housewife led a national revolution against the dictator Ferdinand Marcos in what became known as ‘People Power’. When Cory died in 2009, the nation mourned as they have done for no other President. Today, her legacy lives on through her son Benigno Aquino III, who became the 15th President within a year of his mother’s death. Running time: 55 mins Veteran pot-seller David thinks his task is easy: go to Mexico, pick up some weed and bring it back to the States. The reward is sweeter than sugar, a deal he cannot resist. But transporting a large marijuana stock back into town is not as easy as it seems. A brilliant idea dawns on him when a family on a trailer asks him for directions. Excited, he forms his nuclear family with his stripper neighbour, a high maintenance homeless girl and an awkward teen who does anything to get David’s attention. As they face extinction, she finds out what is being done to save these graceful primates. Together with wife Maggie and their teenager children Belle and Warren, they are relocated to the small Normandy town Cholong-sur-Avres. Meanwhile, the mafia offers a $20 million reward to whoever kills Giovanni and his family. When the mafia discovers their whereabouts, Cholong becomes no man’s land. Starring: Robert De Niro, Michelle Pfeiffer, Dianna Agron, John D’Leo, Tommy Lee Jones Running time: 1 hr 59 mins DOCUMENTARY GRAYSON PERRY AND THE TOMB OF UNKNOWN CRAFTSMAN (U) For two years, artist Grayson Perry worked behind the scenes at the British Museum to stage his most ambitious show yet - The Tomb of the Unknown Craftsman. Perry was given free rein to choose whatever he wanted from the Museum’s collection of more than 8 million objects from all over the world. The resulting exhibition was as if the visitor had stepped into the treasures of a mysterious civilisation - built entirely around the obsessions of Perry himself. Running time: 1 hr 1 mins Four magicians each answer a summons to an obscure address. A year later, they are the Four Horsemen, big time stage illusionists who climax their sold-out Las Vegas show with robbing a bank, apparently for real. This puts agents Dylan Rhodes of the FBI and Alma Dray of Interpol on the case to find out how they did it. However, the mystery proves difficult even with insights from illusion exposer, Thaddeus Bradley. In the world of magic, nothing is as it seems. Arnold’s is a classic rags-to-riches story: the American dream come true. Brought up in a poor family in Austria, he became a champion body-builder and Mr Universe. It took him to America where he starred in a movie and married a Kennedy before conquering Hollywood. Over the years, he has created a series of new identities for himself: athlete, actor and even Governor of California. The feisty kingpin puts a bounty on the judge’s heads, however, as Dredd and Anderson battle the building’s many violent drug users. Starring: Karl Urban, Olivia Thirlby, Lena Headey, Warrick Grier, Rakie Ayola Running time: 1 hrs 41 mins SPORTS I WANT TO BE (U) Bo McCalebb is an NBA All Star basketball player who has starred in the Olympics. Here, Bo shows how to pursue the sport professionally. Running time: 29 mins HIDDEN CITIES SARAWAK (U) Home to over two million people from some 20 indigenous groups. But beneath the tropical calm lay remnants of Sarawak’s past. Forged by war and colonialism, it is even said to be an ancient land of magic and ritual. Anthony Morse explores one of the world’s most culturally diverse states and the stories hidden just beneath its surface. Running time: 50 mins When Heather’s father disappears just before her eighteenth birthday, she must visit the alternate universe that has plagued her family since childhood to rescue him. Entering the town of Silent Hill brings with it more terrifying layers than she imagined, as the cult that inhabits it threatens her both physically and emotionally. Starring: Adelaide Clemens, Kit Harington, Sean Bean Running time: 1 hrs 45 mins FASHION ELEMENTS OF STYLE (U) Examines every facet of fashion and style as we understand it. This episode focuses on the best spots in London and looks at several fashion insiders such as designer Paul Smith, it-girl Plum Sykes and shoe designer Manolo Blahnik. Running time: 27 mins BIOGRAPHY STEVIE WONDER (U) Stevie Wonder was born prematurely and put in a malfunctioning incubator, leaving him permanently blind. Despite his disability or perhaps because of it, Wonder was a musical prodigy. He has gone on to win 25 Grammy Awards, a lifetime achievement award and an Academy Award. His is an inspiring story of great obstacles, but even greater success. Almost instantly, the girl begins acting strangely and her parents fear she may be possessed by something. Starring:Natasha Calis, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Kyra Sedgwick Running time: 1 hrs 42 mins WILD WORLD A FIGHT FOR FROGS (U) This series is a new and fresh look into the beautiful wildlife that inhabits the world. This Emmy award-winning programme paints a captivating picture of the fragile and intricate world surrounding us, with the ever-changing backdrops of stunning locations throughout. Running time: 30 mins MEGA MOVERS LOST AND FOUND (U) Mega Movers are called upon to lift two hidden treasures from obscurity. In Pennsylvania, movers must lift an entire historic 1938 diner out of a building that has covered it for more than 50 years. Meanwhile, a determined mining historian must rescue a gigantic 1923 steam shovel that has been hidden high up in the Colorado Rockies. Will 30 years of sludge and the rugged terrain stop them before they even begin? Running time: 48 mins 10 Bilbo Baggins, against his will, is being forced on a quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf kingdom of Erebor from the fearful dragon, Smaug. Approached by wizard Gandalf the Grey, Bilbo finds himself entering the company of thirteen dwarves led by the legendary warrior, Thorin Oakenshield. Their journey takes them into the wild, swarming with Goblins and Orcs, deathly Wargs, Giant Spiders, Shapeshifters and Sorcerers. Although their goal is to the east, they must first escape the goblin tunnels, where Bilbo meets the creature, Gollum. The shrivelled, hunchbacked human-like creature with big blue eyes has the tenacity of a lion with stunning intelligence and jarring personality changes. Bilbo re-evaluates his journey in light of this meeting. Stuck with no way out, and being left alone with Gollum around an underground lake, Bilbo learns a depth of courage that surprises him greatly. During their time together, Bilbo also obtains Gollum’s ‘precious’ ring that holds a significance…a simple gold ring that is connected to the fate of all Middle-earth in unimaginable ways. A beautiful tale of fear, strength and courage, this movie is a brilliant prequel to the Lord of the Rings trilogy. Marty’s makeover requires the assisstance of Tim Wattley, who knows what he’s doing. The race takes a turn for the worse as the prospect of winning affect Marty’s family dynamics. How can the rich have their way? With altitudes of over 4,500 metres, this is the world’s highest race. Follow runner Lisa Tamati and her team battling storms, altitude sickness and sheer exhaustion. Will Lisa and her international competitors have what it takes to finish the race of their lives? Running time: 59 mins DESIGNERS EMELIO PUCCI (U) Started in the 1950’s by Marchese Emilio Pucci, the house defined kaleidoscopic colour and bold pattern. Since his death in the early 90’s, Pucci’s version of Florentine fantasy has been reinterpreted by expressive creative directors such as Antonio Berardi and Christian Lacroix Running time: 27 mins COMEDY/CRIME ONE FOR THE MONEY (18) After losing her job, recently divorced Stephanie (Heigl) is forced to take a job finding people who skip bail. One of them, she quickly recognises as a former lover and tracks him down. However, he convinces her to help prove his innocence leading to some dark places. Meet a world of Kung Fu that is absurd, sinister and mad and Chinese martial arts reveals its true face. Running time: 56 mins After two successful Dark Knight movies by Christopher Nolan, The Dark Knight trilogy wrapped up in July of 2012 having received favourable critical responses and grossing over $1 billion worldwide. Currently it ranks as the tenth highest-grossing film of all time and the third highest superhero film. The movie opens eight years after the death of Harvey Dent. A new evil by the name of Bane (Tom Hardy) has arrived in Gotham City, aiming to expose the truth about Dent. Living in a newly reconstructed Wayne Manor, Bruce Wayne has become an even bigger recluse. When Bane takes over the city by force, madness turns Gotham City into a place inundated with crime and bandits. Calls for Batman to resurface are duly made. To aid him in stopping the masked menace is beautiful jewel thief Selina Kyle, but is she really trustworthy? The movie quickly gained popularity with its stellar cast and impressive cinematography. Sometimes difficult to watch but a true history of the slavery era in the United States, the movie brilliantly captures the sentiments and emotion from the time. With immaculate attention to detail, the film garnered many awards and was highly acclaimed by critics. The blockbuster hit movie earned three Academy Awards, including Best Picture. It received a Golden Globe Award for Best Motion Picture – Drama and also took home the BAFTA Award for Best Film. Chiwetel Ejiofor also brought home the award for Best Actor in his role as Solomon Northup. Lupita Nyong’O who played Patsey, the young slave girl, was also nominated for her role. The writer for this emotional film, John Ridley, was residing in Amsterdam where Anne Frank was a national hero. When he read the book, he knew that the story needed to be heard and so the screenplay was born. Backed by Brad Pitt’s production company, Plan B Entertainment, and with a budget of US$20million, the film grossed highly at the box office with US$178,417,961. The elegant music scores were composed by Hans Zimmer, composer for the Pirates of the Caribbean movies and more. After the Oscar wins, both Steve McQueen (producer) and John Ridley (screenplay writer) got into a feud over the screenplay credit. McQueen was denied his share and Ridley was vindicated by Fox Searchlight, the film distributor. The movie is based on the history of Superman, or Kal-El, as he was known on his home planet Man of Steel UNLIKE ITS PREDECESSORS, this remake of the Superman movie takes a step back in time to the origin of the famous superhero. Initially slated to be shot in 3D, director Zack Snyder was determined to keep the shoot in 2D and was then later convinced into 3D for the release. This is the first film that intended to share the fictional cinematic universe with other DC comic characters. There were also other firsts that joined the DC comic characters. Henry Cavill, the twenty-seven year old Brit who played the Man of Steel is the first non-American actor to have played the kryptonitesensitive superhero. Grace Hill Media, a Christian-based marketing firm was enlisted to spread the Christian themes of the film. Free will, sacrifice, and God-given purposes made up for the religious themes that were included in the film. The Washington Post states: “Man of Steel isn’t just a movie. It’s a Bible study in a cape.” While many raved about the film’s narrative, acting, visuals, and reinvention of the characters, others were neither as keen on the film’s pacing nor poor character development. Despite the critics, and the backlash, however, Zack Snyder’s movie was a major success at the box office, grossing US$687,999,518 worldwide. The profitable movie will see a sequel in the near future that will feature the mysterious Batman along with the Amazonian demigod, Wonder Woman. Months were spent toiling on the design of the Jaeger pilots while the Russian suits were inspired by cosmonaut space uniforms Pacific Rim INFLUENCED BY KAIJU AND MECHA THEMES, and staying true to the concepts and artistry behind the two concepts, Guillermo Del Toro’s Pacific Rim is an monster masterpiece. For those unfamiliar with the terms, Kaiju in Japanese means ‘stranger creature’. in the likes of Godzilla. Mecha, on the other hand is a science-fiction genre that centres on robots or machines controlled by humans. Some are limited to cars with limbs, others are giant manmade humanoids. The movie features an A-team of visual directors, effects supervisors and artists that cooperate to piece together the amazing special effects that grossed a total of US$114 million in China, their biggest market. The big names include Oscar winners John Knoll and Hal T. Hickel who both contributed to the Star Wars prequel trilogy and Pirates of the Caribbean films. The man behind the Iron Man suits, Shane Mahan was also invited as the effects supervisor. Star Trek and Independence Day Oscar winner, Clay Pinney, also had a hand in the creative action. Besides the awardwinning designers and artistic team, the film scores were also composed by Ramin Djawadi. Djawadi was selected based on his magical works on Prison Break, Iron Man, and Game of Thrones. Del Toro explained that Djawadi coming onboard was because of the grandeur of his scores that at the same time possessed soul. Despite the inspiration that was taken from Francisco Goya’s The Colossus, and albeit the incredible hype leading up to the release of the movie, Pacific Rim surprised critics by performing poorly at the United States Box Office. In stark contrast, the movie was highly successful in other parts of the world, garnering a large fan base outside the US.
