Scott has been researching Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives in the accommodation sector and is currently working on his dissertation, focusing on the successful communication of CSR in SE Asia. Scott has over 20 years of practical experience as an owner and manager in the service sector and more than a decade’s worth of teaching and consulting experience in Thailand. Scott has worked closely with many of the leading tourism suppliers in Thailand to develop service training programs and promote strategies that make business sense and common sense. He has published numerous articles regarding the communication of CSR and is a popular contributor at international conferences and seminars. Scott has experience hosting academic conferences and has been invited to present keynote speeches on a variety of topics throughout SE Asia. He currently serves on the editorial review board of several academic journals. Scott also serves as the International SKAL Councillor-Thailand and the Director for Young SKAL-Thailand. SKAL International is an organization of tourism professionals representing 17,000 members in over 500 local clubs in over 100 countries. 14 The Communication of Corporate Social Responsibility in Thailand’s Tourism Industry Scott Michael Smith PhDc. ABSTRACT Purpose: The overall aim of this research was to identify and examine the practices and communication of social responsibility initiatives among senior managers in Thailand’s tourism industry, primarily the accommodation sector. The main objectives of the research were to investigate the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) practices of a company and the nature of the communication of their commitments to CSR to industry stakeholders (management/owners, employees, suppliers, customers and the community). In the absence of a universal definition, and for the purposes of this study, CSR was defined as ‘a strategic approach of incorporating social concerns into business operations and relations with stakeholders’. Design/Methodology/Approach: Semi-structured in-depth interviews were conducted using open ended questions with senior managers in Thailand’s tourism industry. Snowball Sampling (chain referral sampling) was used to identify qualified subjects for the in-depth interviews. Considerations for qualified participants are those that are employed in senior management positions in the accommodation sector in Thailand that are most likely to provide rich, informative, detailed and useful data. Participants work experiences represent a large segment of the tourism industry in Thailand including; profession (accommodation sector, transportation sector, food and beverage and tour operators) geographic (North, South, East, Central), ownership (independent and corporate) as well as size (small, medium, large) and star ranking (1-5).The questions and sequences were tailored to the respondent although the main topics remain unchanged. General questions regarding thoughts and opinions of CSR from an Asian or Western paradigm led to more specific questions relating to CSR initiatives practiced by the managers and the methods of communication utilized. Results: The data revealed variations of the definition CSR in accommodation sector in Thailand; each senior manager viewed CSR with different interpretation. Asking the respondents to describe the requirements of a legitimate CSR initiative provided a multitude of views with the common feature being that CSR initiatives are ‘people’ oriented. The general consensus among senior managers as to whether the primary focus of the CSR strategy should be employees or the community provides a basis for 15 understanding. The results of the research indicate an effective communication strategy. Effective CSR communication will explain CSR initiatives to employees, customers, owners and other important stakeholders. The communication strategy should, ultimately, tell a story about the company’s CSR philosophy, goals, programs and initiatives. The various dynamics of each stakeholder relationship should be considered and the appropriate communication strategy should be used. As a result of the research, a model for effective communication of CSR efforts emerged. A framework for CSR communication and practical guidelines for the best practice of effective communication of CSR in the accommodation industry was developed. While no company would exemplify each best practice exactly as presented, successful companies demonstrated many of the best practices described. Practical implications: By applying these guidelines, managers can convince stakeholders to actively support, implement, and honor the company’s CSR strategy. It is hoped that the research findings and discussions presented will provide the foundation for further research into CSR communication. A CSR strategy that thoughtfully considers stakeholder communication is essential to the success of an organization’s CSR initiative. Limitation of the Research: The inductive exploratory research required to analyze the communication of CSR initiatives focuses on the communication strategies between senior managers and major stakeholders including; shareholders, customers, suppliers, employees and the community (environment and government). The study targets the tourism industry, primarily the accommodation sector, to the exclusion of other sectors that comprise the tourism industry. The uniqueness of the service industry further limits the scope of the research. Communication may well be the key success factor for successful CSR strategies. Key Words: Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), Communication, Thailand, Accommodation Sector, CSR Communication Strategy, CSR Communication, Stakeholder Communication, Cultural Communication 16 Natural Science Keynote Speech The Prominent Future of Water Conservation Saturday, March 15, 2014 Speaker : Mr. Reid Ridgway 11:30-12:00 Tamarind 1 Mr. Ridgway’s presentation is about our changing relationship with water: the world's most precious resource, the key ingredient of life of earth. Although he outlines the wildly unsustainable trajectory humankind has embarked upon (and in stark terms) the presentation transcends becoming one more alarm bell in a chorus of sirens. It reminds us of the beauty and mystery of water and it moves to a motivational stage where Mr. Ridgway outlines the prescription for a global shift of consciousness. Mr. Ridgway preposes that communication is the key to change, and that scientists are accountable for the effectiveness of their communication, which includes understanding the emotional impact of their communication—and the resulting societal response. He discusses the era of “junk” science subterfuge, and the scientific community’s need to police it, expose it and stamp it out. The summary of Mr. Ridgway’s presentation examines innovative and surprising solutions in water conservation, and a final word encouraging each audience member to take the issue forward. The presentation is divided into six mini topics: 1. Magical, Mysterious, Mundane (an examination of water itself) 2. The Value Paradox (the incongruous way we value water) 3. A finite resource. (the facts and figures of our situation) 4. The responsibly of scientists (conviction, morality, and integrity) 5. Communication: Alarm Bells and Denial vs Solutions (the era of subterfuge) 6. Innovation and the Shift of Consciousness (applied imagination) 17 Conference Venue Information The Cape Panwa Hotel www.capepanwa.com/ Address: 27, 27/2, Mu 8, Sakdidej Road, Cape Panwa, Phuket 83000, Thailand TEL: +66 76 39 1123 Email: reservations@capepanwa.com The Cape Panwa Hotel embodies tropical luxury in one of the world’s most desirable destinations.
