The Berkley Buzz
“Creating Community Through
People, Parks and Programs”
Hello and welcome to the Spring/Summer 2015 edition of the Berkley Buzz. After a deep freeze this past February, I know everyone is excited to finally ‘Get Out
& Play.’ Here at Berkley Parks & Recreation we have been working hard to offer great spring and summer programs to warm up those muscles and get you outside
to welcome in the sunshine.
The winter months have certainly not slowed us down and we continued to offer a full slate of classes and programs throughout the last few months. Most notably, we
ran our 5th annual WinterFest on February 7th and this year’s great weather and new additions to the day proved to bring in our highest attendance yet! We estimate
we had nearly 1,000 people in attendance over the course of the day and we couldn’t be happier with all the families and people that came to spend the day with us.
Congratulations again go out to The Lunch Café for repeating as this year’s winner in the best soup contest! It was a close race this year with only a couple of votes
separating first and fourth place. We truly appreciate the time, effort and deliciousness that our local restaurants share with us each year during this competition.
We also know that this event would not be possible without the generous support we receive from our local community groups and businesses. WinterFest and the
spirit of the day completely embodies the City’s motto, ‘We Care.’ Without the donations of time, financial resources, in-kind gifts and our numerous volunteers,
this amazing day would not be possible. Thank you does not seem nearly enough in cases like this, but with our most heartfelt voice, we say THANK YOU to all
those that contributed to the success of WinterFest 2015. Below are a list of our sponsors and event volunteers. May you know how grateful we are for your support.
WinterFest Sponsors:
Berkley Steelers, Vibe Credit Union, Berkley Dad’s Club, Friends of Berkley Parks and Recreation
Ice Sculpture Sponsors:
Premier Care Pharmacy, Tim & Nikki Gaudet, Red Carpet Platinum - Lisa Marie Bauer
Gold Sponsors:
Durst Lumber Company, Chet’s Rent-All, Stantec, Berkley Mom’s Club, Berkley Rotary Club, Berkley Lions Club, Armadillo Printwear
Silver Sponsors/In-Kind Donations:
McCoy Maintenance, Woodsman Service, SMART, Royal Popcorn Supply, Hunt Sign Co., Little Caesar’s Pizza, Butterfly Bake Shoppe, Fowling
Warehouse, Detroit Broomball, Michigan Graphic and Awards, Westborn Market, The Print Stop, Hartfield Lanes, Jump-A-Rama, Spike Lawrence, Boy
Scout Troop 1085, Cub Scout Troop 1082, Fairytale Entertainment, Oakland Jr. Grizzlies Hockey, Berkley’s Gourmet Cupcakes and Party Cakes, Berkley
Huntington Woods Youth Assistance, Berkley Youth Hockey Association, Bloomfield Hills Girls Varsity Hockey
Soup Participants:
Republica, The Lunch Café, Coco Fairfield’s, The Recipe Kit Warehouse, O’Mara’s
I would be remiss if I also did not thank our tireless staff for going above and beyond to produce WinterFest. Their dedication to providing our community with
a fun-filled and FREE day of activities is truly remarkable. Their creativity to provide new elements year after year brings freshness to the event and provides all
families with a great day.
As we close out another great winter here in Michigan and at Berkley Parks & Recreation, we welcome the spring sunshine, green grass and our community parks
coming back to life. Please read through the following pages carefully and see what programs or events you may be interested in joining. We work hard to provide
activities and programming that meets the needs of our whole community. If you are looking for summer camp for your children, look no further than our section on
this as you will find we offer a high quality camp at a reasonable cost. We urge you to talk to past campers and parents and hear directly from them how much they
love coming to summer camp in Berkley!
For more information on our camp program or any of the programs described in our Buzz, please do not hesitate to call us at the Community Center at 248-658-3470.
We appreciate all questions and inquiries. Thank you for checking out this edition of the Buzz and please do not hesitate to let us know if you have an idea that would
make our parks, programs and facilities even better.

Quizzo! Detroit Presents:
The Broken Time Machine
Intelligence is informing us that a time machine is going to
crash land in the very near future. To be prepared we are
gathering qualified community members to be ready for
anything. Residents will work together in teams of four to find
the missing “out of towners” and help get them back home
to whatever century they came from. We need to solve this
extraordinary problem before we alter the course of history or
the future or the universe or whatever.
Can you help us find these “out of towners” and help get them
home?

Boys will learn the basic rules of lacrosse. Your son will be
taught the necessary skills to play lacrosse including how to
cradle, pass, shoot, pick up ground balls, and other skills at
the beginner level. Players will receive coaching from high
school lacrosse state champions who are also former college
lacrosse players. It is highly recommended that campers bring
their own stick as we only have a few extra sticks available.
All positions and skill levels are welcome and kids will receive
the personal attention they will need, no matter how much
previous experience they have. This camp’s main purpose is to
spread an appreciation of a growing sport that many younger
kids who love running, throwing and playing are sure to enjoy!

Skyhawks Golf focuses on building the confidence of young
athletes through proper technique and refining the essential
skills of the game. Golf is a challenging and lifelong sport,
so young athletes need proper focus on the fundamentals
of form, swinging, putting and body positioning. To assist
in this training, Skyhawks has adopted the SNAG (Starting
New At Golf) system. SNAG is specifically designed for the
entry-level player and simplifies instruction so that young
players can make an easy and effective transition onto the golf
course. No need to bring your own clubs--all equipment is
