Design Context. Many young people choose to express their individuality by the clothes they wear, the accessories they use and the products they decorate their room with. Alternative, offbeat, unusual, out of the ordinary, crazy style fashion, the ‘in thing’, the rage, the new trend and hip are all the words that inspire our nations up and coming textile designers Design Task 2: Design and make a textile product suitable for the 18 – 23 year age range taking your inspiration from either ‘the age of punk’ or ‘the swinging sixties’. If the product is successful it will form part of a limited range to be sold at music festivals throughout the country. Shop profiles: “Asos is the UK’s largest independent fashion About Urban Outfitters: Urban Outfitters was originally called ‘Free People’ and focused on ‘funky’ fashion and household products. But it has since been changed to Urban Outfitters, the product line has evolved to vintage, retro, hipster and ironically funny garments and household furniture. “Urban Outfitters has been described as sexy, hip, stylish, kitschy and catlike. We are known for catering to the "hipster" culture and fashion, which incorporates an influence from past decades. Urban Outfitters' has established ability to understand our customers and connect with them on an emotional level is the reason for our success.“ – Quoted from the Urban Outfitters website (UrbanOutfitters.co.uk) My opinion on Urban outfitters: I really like Urban outfitters because it has very good quality garments, which you are able to wear all year round because they never go out of fashion. The shop itself has a really nice atmosphere however I do find the garments in the shop out of my price range which is very disappointing. Existing products: and beautyretailer and offers over 60,000 branded and own label products across women swear and menswear. Dresses, jeans, Tshirts, shirts, shoes, jewellery,, lingerie and beauty – we've got the lot.” – Quoted from Website (asos.com) Urban outfitters: The Blouse which the model is wearing is the ‘Cooperative Piped Detail Shirt’ which is priced at £45.00. This shirt is a relaxed-fit, 70s inspired blouse with contrast piping and a rounded collar, with a slightly dipped hem. It is 100% polyester. I think this is a good example of soft grunge – its loose and masculine because of the colour and the fit, but the peter pan collar makes it look cute. Urban outfitters: The skirt which the model is wearing is the ‘Cooperative Pleated Skirt in Tartan’. Which has been priced at £38.00. It is a miniskirt style with a exposed zip fastening, thick waistband and a bold tartan print. It is also made from 100% polyester. The pattern on this skirt is tartan, which is really punk – I like the length and the fliippy fit of it. It looks like it would appeal to my target market. I like the Urban Outfitters website because it is really easy to navigate and expresses the personality of the shop using quirky fonts. It also promotes the new season trends and allows you to get a 15% discount. Which is good for business for the shop as people will use this to an advantage. ASOS: the skater dress on the far right is made from leather – I really like the fir of it, although it cant be machine washed. It is a modern style of dress made from a punk material. It is expensive at £75 – but would be cheaper if made from fake leather. The other out fit is very soft grunge, because it looks casual. The skirt is leather and £35, the sweatshirt is £45 – I think the outfit is a good mix of smart and casual. I decided to research asos.com because not only does my chosen customer like to shop on that website but also the clothes which are sold show an undeniable punk influence. The tartan print and dark colours used on the clothes show the recognisable modern punk style. Designer research: Vivienne Westwood is a British fashion designer and business women, born 8th April 1941. She first started to get noticed by the public when she made clothes for Malcolm McLaren’s boutique in the King's Road. However she is known for bringing modern punk back into the mainstream. Vivienne Westwood is deeply interested in the punk fashion and era of 1970’s, saying "I was messianic about punk, seeing if one could put a spoke in the system in some way“. Designer Research: Vivienne’s designs include: safety pins, razor blades, bicycle or lavatory chains on clothing and spiked dog collars for jewellery, as well as ‘outrageous’ make-up and hair. She also uses traditional elements of Scottish design such as tartan fabric and historical 17th and 18th century cloth cutting principles, and interpreting these into her designs. House of Holland is the company belonging to Henry Holland. He is an English fashion designer and famous blogger. He is from Manchester. Henry Holland became famous through a range of ‘fashion groupie’ t-shirts that he made in 2006 – he made t-shirts with slogans such as ‘I’ll tell you who’s boss, Kate Moss’. These are some of the t-shirts he is most famous for designing – they were bold, and made a big impact because of the font he used and the bright colours. I think they are quite punk, because some times they said controversial things and shocked people at the time. Vivienne Westwood’s punk designs are what made her famous in the first place. She used fabrics that other designers didn’t use, such as leather and PVC. She took inspiration of from bands of the 70s like the clash and the sex pistols. Henry Holland works with the model Agyness Dean a lot. She often wears grunge and punk style clothing and has recently one a collection for Dr Martens boots – which are very punk/grunge. As you can see from these images, she still has a really strong punk influence in the clothes she makes in her latest collections. She used corset tops a lot, and puffy skater skirts and tartan and colours like black and red. Here are some of the outfits from Henry Holland's last collection. You can see the soft grunge influence in the tartan designs, but in soft pastel colours. Also the punk influence with the animal print. Customer profile Name: Age: 15 Occupation: Student My customer enjoys Singing, Blogging, Making music, Long boarding and creating My customer regularly shops in Urban Outfitters, American Apparel, Brandy Melville and Pacsun, h&m, weat seal clothing, asos.com and topshop My customer describes her style as edgy, soft punk and soft grungy. My customer likes to wear the colours: Grey, Blue, White, Red, Green, Black, Brown, Navy Blue. My customer really likes the punk style however would never have the confidence to wear a full punk outfit but she likes to take a punk styled garment and incorporate it into her outfit to give it an edgy look. My customer really enjoys pop punk music, and likes wearing t-shirts with her favourite bands on. Thee clothes she typically wears are soft grunge, so baggy t-shirts and checked shirts with skinny jeans and dungarees, she also wears skater skirts with band t-shirts and vintage t-shirts tucked in. If she was going out she would wear a dress – the style of dresses she wears most often are skater dresses, smock dresses and sometimes body con dresses. She likes to go to gigs to watch her favourite bands, in the summer she goes to music festivals around London, like hard rock calling and Field day festival – she would dress up to go to a music festival. Her style icons are mostly from bands that she likes. She really likes the way Hayley Williams From the band Paramore dresses, she also likes daisy Lowe the model as she wears the soft grunge look really well. Music festival research Typical festival outfits A music festival is a festival that showcases new music and up and coming artists. They are normally held in an outdoors venue. Most music festivals occur yearly. However most rock festivals are held only once. Why is fashion o important at festivals? People like to go to festivals not just for the music, but to show of and dress up and feel free to express themselves, that’s why lots of people wear not so practical clothes. They want to show the music they are into, and they dress on trend. •V Fest: The V festival is a yearly music festival located in the UK during the summer. The idea for the v fest was created in 1996. The festival has 3 performance stages, it is a common idea for the festival goers to camp in the field here the festival is held. •Glastonbury: Glastonbury is the worlds largest greenfield music and performing arts festival. The festival is held in the vale of Avalon in the UK, the field is at least half a mile across and about 8 and a half miles in perimeter. Glastonbury was originally a rock festival but over the years has progressed and accepted all genres of music. Again it is a common ritual that the festival goers camp in the fields where the festival is held. •Reading and Leeds: Reading and Leeds festivals are a pair of yearly festivals which are held in Reading and Leeds in the UK. They commonly held in august around the bank holiday. Reading festival is the original of the two festivals and originally was a rock festival but over the years has turned into an alternative music festival. Field Day This festival is held in Victoria park in east London every year, it showcase new alternative music. They type of people that it attracts are many hipsters and people that are into fashion and alternative music. Fashion and looking good is really important at this one day festival. Festival fashion: This year at music festivals there were two main trends: •The first trend was flower crowns, cropped band t-shirts, high waisted shorts, over the knee socks and wellington boot. This is a vintage inspired look, with a punky but feminine edge. •Another trend was preppy/floral print shirts, light wash denim skater skirts, knee high socks and wellingtons. They wore wellingtons because at music festivals it is known to get extremely muddy and so wellington boots are very practical. Short clothes are often wore because it means that if it rains, or if the mud gets too much then only your legs get wet, and not your clothes. This is why people rarely wear jeans. This is a vintage band t-shirt , that is over-sized, the sleeves have been cut off. The long bottom of the tshirt has been shredded so it becomes a cropped tshirt. The hot pants are really short, to show off the wearers legs, they are worn with hunter wellies, to protect from the mud This is another festival look. The skater skirt is made from faded denim, it is worn it a cute floral shirt with a peter pan collar. Both outfits are worn with floral head bands – these look a bit hippish and make a punk outfit look more feminine and girly.. Again this is worn with wellies, this time these are shorter bright red wellies. Existing product research Product 1: Primary research: Leather jacket Product 2: Primary research: Tie dye skater dress Product 3: Army shirt with gold studs Product 4: Leather skater skirt Shop: I brought this jacket from boohoo.com, it coast £45.00. it is not real leather, it is fake, otherwise it would be more expensive I bought this dress from Urban outfitters. I brought this shirt from h&m. This skirt is from Zara Price & material The jacket was reasonably priced at £45.00, it is made from fake leather. The dress cost £40.00, which is a bit expensive for a dress made from cotton. It has been tie-dyed black and white. This shirt was also reasonably priced at £20.00, it is made from cotton with studded gold decoration. This skirt is made from real leather, it cost £60. it has a chunky feature zip at the back of it . Opinion: I really like this jacket because you can wear it with almost anything and it adds a bit of edge the outfit. This dress looks really grunge, the tie-dye is bold. It would be perfect to be worn at a festival because it looks really casual, but you could easily dress it up with a jacket. I really like this shirt because the colour is very grungy. However my favorite part of the shirt is the collar. I think I would prefer it in black because it would go with more things. This shirt would look good over a band t-shirt or a skater dress for a festival. This skirt is really punk, I think it would go well with a band t-shirt or a studded vest or shirt. I think my target market would wear it because it could be dressed up or down. Punk influence: The studs on the shoulders show a punk influence and also the material used to make the jacket which was leather. This is more soft grunge then punk, but because of the shape it looks loose and punky. You could easily accessorize it with a studded belt, or collar. The gold studs on the collar show a punk influence however the colour shows a grunge influence. The material and the chunky zip are both very punk. Picture: Research analysis Research: What I found out: How will this influence my product? Mood Board: For my mood board I looked at popular high street shops for clothes with a punk influence and took images from the websites. As I gathered more pictures I noticed that no two garments are the same even if they’re the same. For example two leather jackets both resembled the modern punk style in a completely different way to the other. This will influence my product because it will be the base of my design ideas. It presents to me a variety of ways to resemble the style, and will help me think of many new ways to do so. Existing Products: When I looked at existing primary products I noticed that studs, tartan prints and band t-shirts were in fashion and many popular high street shops had been selling garments which had those in them. This will influence my product because it lets me know how to make my garment subtle look punk influenced. Also it gives me ideas for other ways I can make a garment look punky. Shop Profiles For my shop profile I looked at asos.com and urban outfitters. I looked into their target market and what items they typically sell, and how they deal with the punk trend. This will influence my product as it gives me guidelines for what my garment should resemble however be able to stand out at the same time due to the fact that I am designing for urban outfitters. Designer Research: When researching designers I decided to focus on the famous fashion designer Vivienne Westwood because she is commonly known for her punk designs. I also looked at Henry Holland because he uses bright slogans on his t-shirts, which seem grunge. This will influence my design because it displays to me one of the most famous punk designs in the world and how to in cooperate that into my designs Festival Research: When looking at different music festivals in England I discovered loads of un-known ones, however I decided to look into the most popular ones because these are were the most popular festival trends occur. I found out that at festivals people like wear practical and comfortable clothing whilst at the same time look stylish and stand out from the crowd. I think that this will influence my design ideas because I will look at new ways to make what should be plain and boring products into stylish and comfortable. I will also look at different ways to incorporate accessories into my designs Customer profile I picked someone in my target market age range and profiled them to find out there interests and the style of clothes and colours that they like to wear. I made sure I chose someone that is interested in festivals and is a fan of alternative music. I found out that people in my age range like to dress on trend, but don’t want to look too extreme. I will use the information I have found out from Lara to help me design a dress or outfit that she would actually wear to a gig or a music festival. I have an ideas of her interests and I know the clothes that will appeal to her. specification Target Market: Aesthetics: My product will be made for people between the ages of 15 – 21 as this is the common age for people who shop at the shop ‘Urban Outfitters’ which I profiled in my shop profile. My product will be aimed at people who like the style of soft grunge/punk, and general music lovers who like pop punk bands such as: 5 Seconds Of Summer and Wheetus. It will be worn and sold at festivals by people that are on trend and like punk clothes. For my product I will use a ‘grunge/punk’ influence, because this is very on trend at the moment. I really like clothes that use printed bold images, or cut out sections and believe that it is commonly associated with the punk and soft grunge style. I will decorate my outfit with studs. I want my dress to still look quite modern and not completely punk. Size: Function: My garment will be designed so it is able to be worn in both day and night, because festivals don’t finish early, they usually go on from mid-day until the early hours of the morning. So my outfit will need to be able to look good both night and day. I will make my dress in a size 12 because the dress will be a prototype and size 12 is an average dress size. If my dress were going to be batch produced to be sold at festivals I would make it in a range of sizes from 816. Components: Environmental Issues: Whilst making my garment I will insure that no fabric is wasted by laying the templates as close to each other as possible. Also I will try and use some recycled components wear possible on my outfit. I want to use a variety on components in my garment. For the fastening I will probably use a a chunky visible zip, because this links to the punk theme. I will also use studs to decorate the garment, as these are very punk. Health & Safety: Manufacture: To ensure my product is safe I will make sure through the manufacture I am doing quality control checks to ensure that there and no more pins in the fabric and everything has been sewn correctly, and securely. Where ever possible I will use the over locker to finish of the seams on my garment. This will give them a neat, professional finish. I will make sure the manufacture is planned well to ensure it runs smoothly. Cost: Fabric: I will price my product at around £25 this is because this is the average price of dresses in high street shops. I want to use a fabric that will support the decoration that I ill use on it, so I will look at using fake leather, denim or a stiff duchess satin. I think this will give the garment I make a good structure. Jersey cotton would be too floppy. . Initial ideas This jumper is made from a sweatshirt material, the crosses would be appliqued on with a tartan pattern This jacket is made from heavy cotton material in an army green colour. The hood would be made from a light grey sweat shirt with This skirt is a high wasted skirt, it has a black elasticated waist band and has a tart pattern. . white string The shirt has a tartan pattern made from cotton. The jacket would be made from a light wash denim. The edges on the shoulders have been frayed, studs have been sewn onto the corners of the collar also pop punk band logos have been appliqued on These shorts are high wasted, made from denim and have been distressed with studs sewn on to one side. This dress is made from cotton in a maroon red colour. It is a skater dress with studs sewn along the neckline. Page 1 Initial ideas The contrasting sleeves fit the jersey shirt trend, the studs add to the punk theme. I would use PVC leather for the sleeves and jersey cotton for the bodice. This jacket is made from leather. Safety pins and chains are attached onto the collar of the jacket. This is because this particular garment was influenced . by Vivienne Westwood This is a skater skirt, made from PVC leather. It is black and is high wasted. These shorts would be made from dark wash denim. They would be distressed and frayed along the bottom. They're high wasted and studs in a shape of a cross have been sewn onto the left back pocket The jacket would be made from a medium to light wash demi with pvc leather sleeves this again fits in with the trend of baseball jerseys. The collar and denim are also a common trend at music festivals. The corners of the collar would be connected by a small silver chain it would be read that matches the hem of the sleeves to create contrasting colours, the contrast and bright and dark colours and collars fit in with the festival trends and punk theme. Page 2 Developed ideas This is a developed idea of one my initial ideas I decided to change the lining of the dress to red instead of having a red hem the dress would be made completely of PVC leather. The collar follows the festival trends as well as the red lining. The bodice would be in a corset style with small studs going along the top it would be fastened with a zip the skirt would be a skater skirt style the lining would be made from red lace and the dress itself made from PVC leather. Distressed jeans, would be made from light wash denim, they follow the festival trends and the distressedness fits with the punk theme The crop top would be made with a lot of stretch and to be tight to fit, the skirt would be made in a skater skirt style from PVC leather, the crop top would lie just above the belly button. It follows the festival trend and the summer trend. Page 1. Developed ideas This dress is made from navy blue velvet with studs sewn onto the neck line, The style is a skater dress made tight to fit on top. This dress is a skater dress made from maroon velvet, like the navy blue design it has studs along the neck line and on the sleeves. It has t-shirt style sleeves. It will also be made tight to fit on top. This dress is a skater style dress with a criss cross back. It is made from cotton and has an elasticated waist. This dress is a jersey dress in pastel pink. It is fastened on the back by a zip and has studs sewn onto the shoulders as if they were applets. Page 2 Developed Ideas This dress is a skater dress with tshirt sleeves. The sleeves would be made from elasticated leather where as the main part of the dress would be made from cotton. It would be made to fit on the top part of the dress and then the skirt would be flowy. Spikes would be sewn onto the shoulders only on the leather part though. This dress is a sleeveless skater dress. It will also be made from cotton and made to fit on the top and with a flowy skirt. Spikes are sewn onto the shoulders. This dress is a another skater styled dress. It is made from red cotton and has 3 quarter length sleeves . this jacket is made from heavy cotton and has a camouflage print. Black elbow patches have been appliqued on the elbows. This dress is a jersey dress in pastel blue. The fastening on the back is a zip. on the back a skull will cut into it by laser cutter into it. Page 3. Fabric samples Dip Dye: For this I painted the piece of fabric the next time I painted along I painted over it with water to fade it out I continued to do this until it gradually faded out completely. Batik: For this I first drew a pattern onto the fabric, after I went over them with wax, after the hot wax I dried I painted over it with different could dyes, after to remove the wax I ironed it over. Applique: To do this I cut out a shape from one fabric then sewed it onto the denim used the zig zag stitch on the sewing machine. Tie Dye: To do this I twisted the fabric then used thick string and tied them around the fabric in various places, to create a ‘sunburst’ pattern. After I had done this I used coloured fabric dye a painted the fabric with it used different colours in different places. Laser cut skull I designed this skull shape on photo shop and laser cut it out from a jersey fabric – I sewed some lace behind it was hard to sew it accurately. Batik: For this I first drew a pattern onto the fabric, after I went over them with wax, after the hot wax I dried I painted over it with different could dyes, after to remove the wax I ironed it over Paper toile Final idea I have created a mock up of my final idea in newsprint paper – I wanted to see what the skull on the back would look like – to see if it would work. I was hard to get the drape right with the paper – but it has given me an idea of how to create sleeves. It was hard getting the pleats even in the skirt section of the dress – I will have to include a lot of pleats to make sure my dress is ‘puffy’ enough. . The dress follows the current trend as it has a skater dress style, the sleeves contrast with the colour of the dress. It reflects the Baseball jersey trend and adds a sense of preppiness to the punk style making it light hearted and not too serious. This is my final design, I incorporated two of my developed ideas into one. This dress will be made from medium – light cotton and have PVC leather on the sleeves. Studs will be sewn onto the and the skull on the back will be cut into the fabric using CAD designs. It is a skater style and has an elastic waistband, therefore there is no fastening. Photoshop colour ways Commercial pattern I scanned my Final design into the computer, this meant that I was able to open it up onto the Photoshop programme. Once I had opened the design onto the programme I erased the pencil marks to create a clean finish I then filtered in a variety of different colours so I was able to see what looked best. In the end I chose the grey one. In am going to adapt the pattern above – for a simple skater dress, by adding in three quarter length sleeves and making the neckline higher and taking out the belt. These measures included wearing a thimble and steal toe caped boots which will help prevent accidents whilst hand sewing and using sewing machines. no Hem the skirt using a snip stitch. Can it be seen from the front? yes Risk to the environment: The risk to the environment for my garment is air miles as I had to order accessories from a long distance, also the material for my sleeves is no bio degradable which means that it cant be recycled and will stay in the land fill without breaking down for many years. Photo diary of manufacture Step 2: Step 1: I had to sew darts into part my I cutthe out thebodice pattern pieces from of the lay plandress, so I had to and pinned them to my material. Then cut them out, some of the pieces had to be cut on fold so I folded the material then laid the edge of the piece onto the fold then cut it. This made it double the size. Step 2: I had to sew darts into the bodice part of my dress, so I had to pin a tack the darts in place the sew them. Step 3: After the darts had been sewn into place I used the laser cutter to cut out my pattern onto the back of the dress, my design changed slightly as I added the year ‘1975’ next to it as this was the year where the punk fashion first came into trend. Then I added lace onto the back of the cut out pattern. Step 4: I pinned my skirt pieces to the material I cut them out, then I pinned the pleats in place, using the guide from the pattern pieces. Pinned pleats Step 5: Cutting out the skirt pieces I sewed them all together then over locked the inside edges. I then sewed the sides, and shoulders of my bodice together and over locked the inside edges. I got my pattern pieces from a commercial pattern that I brought from a website. The brand of pattern pieces I sued was called simplicity and it was designed by Cynthia Rowley. I used the pattern pieces for the design called ‘dress A’. This is because it was the closest to my design. Step 6: After pinning all of the pleats in place I sewed the skirt to the bodice then over locked the edges, then I took out of the pins. Step 7: After I had sewn the bodice and skirt together I cut out some facing to sew to the inside of the neckline to give it a tidier edge . Step 8: Once I had attached the facing to the inside of the neckline I cut out my sleeve pieces from leather, then I sewed the edges together leaving two holes at the top and bottom . I then pinned the sleeves into the shoulder hole of the bodice and sewed them into place I then over locked the edges and then cut the sleeves down to size. Step 9: Afterwards I screwed 5 studs onto each sleeve in a line. I left 2 inches of space between each stud. Step 10: I had to hem the garment to the length I wanted this I done this by using a sewing needle and thread and doing a slip stitch so it cannot be seen from the front. Consumer feedback I asked a potential client and model of my garment, Yasmin aged 16 what she thought. “I think the dress is really practical because the colours can go with any : it casually or spice it up for a outfit its very comfortable because you can wear party. Also I really enjoy it because it makes me feel like a punk, and I feel like I'm back in the 1975. I really like the length of the skirt however I feel it can be too short especially if it was a windy day it would blow up, also I feel that the lace was a bit irritating and would suggest and different material.” Would you wear it to a festival? Yes – I think its good enough to be worn day and night – the material is very ‘day’ but the leather arms are really going out. Final Product and Client Feedback What is your favourite part of the dress? I really like the laser cut pattern on the back, and the lace you have put behind it – it looks really punk, and it brings another fabric into the dress. what do you think I could improve? I think there could be some more studs on the shoulders and down the sleeves. I think this would make it look lots more punk. As it reflects the theme of punk/ soft grunge. Cost: The cost of the materials and to make the dress were reasonably cheap compared to other dresses, at £50. This fits my choice of shop as I would like to sell my dress in a high street shop. Function: The product will be required as a garment for a music festival for young people in the summer. However I feel my dress would not be suitable for the summer and the material is thick and heavy and would be more suited for autumn or winter. I think my garment is suitable for music festivals as it fits the trend of preppy as it reflects a baseball jersey it also reflects the soft grunge, indie trend which commonly seen at festivals. Size and Shape: I made my garment to be a size 12 in the UK and size 10 in the USA. I chose these sizes as they are the most common sizes which are brought at high street shops and are also the most common sizes of the ages of the people in my target market. The stretch in the dress however means that people don’t have to be exactly that size to fit into the dress. Environmental: The dress is not made of 100% natural materials and is actually non bio degradable, this is a problem and it means the material of my garment wont decay and once thrown away will be in the land fill for many years. However the material I used for the sleeves is made from fake leather which means no animals were harmed to make it. Safety: The Fake leather is flammable so I will make sure to keep it away from any type of open flame. Materials and Processes: The product is made from jersey cotton it has no fastening, it has a lot of stretch in it so it gets pulled over the head to be worn. To be made it needed, a laser cutter, a sewing machine, a screw driver and an over locker, it also needed interfacing Aesthetic: The garment I have produced is a skater dress, with a jersey cotton bodice and skirt with faux leather sleeves. The jersey cotton I have used is a faded grey I chose it because it add stretch to the garment so the person wearing it can move freely. I chose to do the sleeves in a different material because the contrasting colours resemble a baseball jersey type style which is on trend at the moment. If I were to change the dress I would used lighter materials as the dress is quite heavy. Testing against specification Topic Specification points Test Carried Out Result Alterations? Purpose To provide a convenient festival inspired garment for an average young high street shopper. Survey of target market I was able to complete a client profile on my aspirational client, and used a range of different fabrics to make my garment sustainable for the high street. I would make my garment more appropriate for the summer festival season by using lighter materials. Market Young women aged 16-21 who like attending festivals and shopping at high street shops. Survey of Target Market I created a simple but edgy design which slightly reflects the theme for the girls who don’t have the confidence to wear a full punk styled outfit. I would perhaps add a few more punk elements Aesthetic Needs to have contrasting colours Mood boards for the different festivals and also the different punk and soft grunge trends. I used the colours grey and black to create a contrasting design to add a bit of edge to a simple design. I would probably use bright colours next time and the grey and black made the garment seem quite dull in comparison to other garments on the market. Fabric Requirements Needs to have a stretch in it so it can be pulled over head. Fabric analysis – I went to a fabric shop and looked at different cottons and types of leather to see which has the best stretch and were more appropriate for my design Following my analysis I was able to chose two good fabrics that were appropriate for my garment Ideally I would have used PVC leather as that had the most stretch and was more appropriate. Construction Product must manufactured with correct tolerances in place, and to the highest quality Quality control checks throughout the manufacture to ensure the garment was made to the highest standard I cut my fabric with a 1.5 cm seam allowance to ensure the garment would be the correct size. This has enabled it to be fit for a size 10 female for which it was required. If I were make the dress again I would like to have ensured I had equipment like laser cutters and an over locker to ensure the highest quality product. Production The garment will be created as a one off production but will be adapted to enable large scale batch production to be sold internationally religion stores and online. N/A I made a garment which required little embellishment that needed to done by hand. This means that it could be easily be adapted for batch production. I would adapt the processes such as laser cut the bodice, which will be a quicker process making it more effective for batch production Quality Control Quality control checks need to be completed at every stage to ensure the garment is being made correctly to the highest standard throughout the manufacturing process. N/A Throughout the manufacture I checked the quality of my garment meaning that it is made to highest standard. i would use an external person to double check the quality of my garment throughout the manufacture also. Safety The safety checks need to be put in place at every stage and the potential hazards identified at every stage to prevent any accidents and/ or injury's occurring. N/A Quality control checks and clear knowledge of how to use machinery as well as taking caution during manufacture to avoid any injuries. I would use an external person to double check and oversee that safety precautions is being carried out effectively. Comparing to existing products This dress is from ASOS.com it is currently on the market for £14.99 so it is a lot cheaper than my garment. It is very similar to my garment as it is made from a grey jersey cotton and has contrasting sleeves reflecting the current trend of baseball jerseys. They style is also very similar to my dress as it is a skater dress style and is above the knee in length. However my dress is different to this one as it has studs on the sleeves, and also has shorter sleeves. This dress is from Topshop.com it is priced at £29 so again is quite a lot cheaper than my dress. This dress is a smock dress, it has a similar shape and style to my garment. This dress also has a similar length to my dress. However my dress is different as it has cut outs on the back also because it has contrasting sleeves with studs on and is a lighter shade of grey. I think my dress is more unique then the topshop and the ASOS dress because of the amount of embellishment I have used. Overall I am really pleased with the finish of my dress – I think it reflects the theme well. And would make the wearer stand out at a festival. If I was going to make improvements I would add ore studs and make it out of a slightly darker grey material. I think I would laser cut out the ‘1975’ to make it more accurate – because it is a bit wonky, because I cut it by hand.
