President’s Corner...
The weather in February was great and March is looking good. Everybody is getting Spring fever. So let’s hope all
those jobs everyone is planning get started and then everybody
can be busy!
The 2012 Home Show is over and it was a success!
All the participants I talked to said the same thing, ―We didn’t
have as many people, but the ones we had were very good. We
made a lot of contacts and have a lot of appointments – very
good exposure‖. I want to thank everyone who participated in
the Home Show and the ones who helped out at the WIBA
Booth/Hospitality Room. When members see Terry Hartley,
please give him a very deserving ―Thank You‖. Terry brought
in 33 vendors and coordinated the Home Show for a 32nd year.
Thank you Terry for a job well done! WIBA certainly appreciates it. Thanks also to Bob Franey for being instrumental in
bringing Brandie Malay from HDTV to this year’s Home Show.
When this was brought up at a special board meeting, I personally did not think we could get this job done. We had less than
36 hours to pull everything together and collect the funds necessary. With a lot of telephone and email communication, and
with the donations of WIBA members, the job got done. Bringing in speakers or other attractions will be discussed at our next
board meeting to see if this is something WIBA should continue
next year. Thanks again Bob Franey, Jennifer Sperry, and all
members who contributed.
The Pilot Club of Galesburg was the non-profit organization chosen by WIBA this year to sell the tickets for the playhouse. I was nervous for awhile, but they came through and
sold over $3,700 for their club. Thank you and congratulations
to the Pilot Club. Mark Copeland of Copeland Custom Homes
built the playhouse. Thank you to Mark for your hard work.
WIBA donated all the materials for the playhouse. Jan Swanson of rural Galesburg won the playhouse.
Let’s all remember WIBA is a non-profit professional
organization. WIBA was established locally in 1956. We currently have 84 members and are looking to grow. We give
scholarships thru Carl Sandburg College and have given out
over $14,500 so far. We have donated the playhouse to nonprofit organizations since 2002, raising over $55,000. WIBA
members should be proud of its members and organization.
The speaker for March will be Tammy Lufkin. He will
speak on fiber concrete. Let’s have a good turnout for one of
our own members. Remember the cash drawing, it will be
worth $50 and you must be present to win.
See you at the March 21st meeting at the Kensington.
Happy St. Patrick’s Day,
Greg Davis

35th Annual Home Show
The 35th Annual
Home Show
was held
March 3rd and
4th at the
Sandburg Mall.
We had 33 members turn in reservations with a total of 43 booth spaces. WIBA provided
coffee, doughnuts, and Hungry Hobo sandwiches for our vendors. Brandie Malay, real estate expert on HDTV’s Designed to Sell and the host of Hidden Potential, gave a presentation, answered
real estate and design questions, and signed autographs on Saturday from 12:30—4:30 p.m.
On Sunday afternoon, the Co-Little Miss Homebuilders, Addison Courtright and
Lillian Lenz, and Little Mr. Homebuilder, Tristan Hunt, were announced. All three helped
draw for the 10-$100 Gift Certificates which were given away by the Association. The winners
were Diana Lenz, Jan Smith, D.L. Davis, Marilyn Thompson, Jeanne Rich, Rick Sayre, Bob
Wakefield, and Mike Leahy of Galesburg; Tina Thomas of Abingdon; and Fred Eskridge of
Alpha. If your business is presented with one of these gift certificates, please let our office know
and we will see that you are reimbursed. Also given away at this time was the playhouse. Jan
Swanson of rural Galesburg was the winner. The playhouse ticket sales totaled $3,789 and will
be used towards a handicapped accessible water spray pad at Rotary Park. Congratulations to
the Pilot Club of Galesburg for all their hard work and the Western Illinois Builders Association
members who should be very proud of their contributions to our community!
A special “Thank You” to Terry Hartley of Rheinschmidt’s for all his efforts in coordinating another successful Home Show! He has chaired this event for 32 years! Also, thanks
to Bob Franey of Sherwin Williams for coordinating Brandie Malay’s appearance, Wayne Allen,
Greg Davis of Century 21, Bill & JoAnn Johnson, Carol Hagan of First Midwest Bank,
Karen Cabrera of F & M Bank, and Christine Denisar of IH Mississippi Valley Credit Union
for helping staff the WIBA booth, Lisa Reynolds of Western Illinois Title for her assistance with
the Little Miss/Mr. Homebuilder Contest, Steve Hawkinson of People’s for the use of the podium
and microphone, and Terry Allen of Webber Rental for moving and delivering the playhouse.
Great job and thank you to everyone for helping make this year’s home show a success.
Please also commend Century 21 and Menard’s as they were the only members to
achieve perfect meeting attendance this past year. Sixteen
members attended 5 or more meetings this past year and
earned $100 off of their home show booth. Only 7 of these
members actually displayed at the Home Show and took advantage of their discount. March’s membership meeting will
be the first meeting in the next calendar year. Please strive to
attend and get off to the right start to earn $100 off your
booth for next year’s Home Show by attending a minimum of
5 meetings! Remember, the Golf Outing and the Christmas
Party count.
