Introducing
the
Three
Linkers
In an effort to grow the game of golf by involving our
beginner lady golfers, we are happy to introduce the
Three Linkers. If you are new to the game, please join
us on Wednesdays at 1:00pm for lunch on the Terrace,
followed by a half-hour lesson and then three holes of golf
with a Pro. After golf, enjoy a cocktail, lunch and libation.
We hope you join us!
Re-introducing
The Nine & Dines will take place once a month, beginning
December 14 and January 11. Golf begins at 3:00pm
followed by dinner after golf. This is a great way to get out,
meet new members and friends, and enjoy our beautiful
golf course and clubhouse.
On behalf of the entire staff at Avila Golf
and Country Club, we would like to give a
special thank you for your generosity on your
contribution to the annual holiday fund. Your
contributions were distributed amongst all staff
members in a fair manner based on length of
employment, where every employee received a
gift regardless of their position. You have made
our holidays very special.
Congratulations to our 2013 Invitational de Avila
Champions, Brian Keenan and Paul Royak,
who captured the overall Gross Honors with the
three round total of 68-64-67 = 199. Graham
Mavar and Ben Kodadek were the Overall Net
Champions by carding the net total of 66-6463=193. Both teams played spectacular and
are very much deserving to be this year’s
champions.
As we head into another busy December,
please peruse this issue of Ventana’s for all
of our traditional events during the month of
December.
Thank you for being a part of the Avila family.
I wish you and yours a Happy Holiday and a
healthy, safe and Happy New Year

Tennis Tip
Have a game plan! Sometimes it doesn’t matter how well you
can hit a tennis ball, you can still lose the match. To be successful
you need to have a game plan and it can be as simple as to hit
another ball over the net. It may be to hit 90% of your shots to
your opponent’s backhand. Serve and volley for some may be a
great game plan, or to grind from the baseline is another option.
Regardless of what game plan you chose, you will play better and
feel better about the match if you were working with a plan in
place. Play smart. Have a game plan!
New Year Resolutions
Start to play tennis! Come back to play tennis! Play more tennis!
Play better tennis! These are great New Year’s resolutions and the
tennis staff would like to see new faces on the tennis courts. We
have a program for everyone, regardless of your level. Tennis can
be very competitive, but it can be great exercise and a lot of fun.
Enjoy the game of a life time. Come talk with one of our tennis
professionals on what you should do first. I guarantee that you
will be glad you did it.

The Interbay Ladies team plays on Wednesday at 9:00am and
Daisy Lewis is the captain for this team. Prior to the winter break,

TO YOUR HEALTH
Does the hustle and bustle of the holiday season leave you too
busy, too tired and too stressed to focus on your own health and
wellbeing? The good news is any form of physical activity can
aid in overcoming the sabotaging effects of stress, whether it be
playing a leisurely round of golf, a stimulating tennis match, or
taking man’s best friend, Fido, for a morning stroll. Be encouraged
knowing a mere ten minutes of exercise and physical activity
releases the feel-good endorphins in our brain vital to mental and
physical health, along with burning a few extra calories. Prioritize
by planning ahead and making a list and checking it twice.

“The Brits” as we like to call them came over in October for the
Prince’s Ryder Cup. Ten Avila members vs. Ten Prince’s Club
members from Sandwich, England contested this annual event
with a rotation back and forth between the two sides of the
Pond. This year (finally), Captain Bob Bunting led the Avila team
to a convincing 16-12 triumph over the squad from Prince’s.
During the renovation over the summer, my
staff and I began a blog to keep you informed
during the entire construction process. It
turned out to be such a great success that
we have decided to keep it going and provide
information about our current golf course
processes and procedures in real time.
There are many activities happening on the
course daily, and I’m sure you may have questions such as, “Why
do you put sand down every week?” or “Why is the course so
wet?” This site provides a better platform for me to answer those
questions, and more, in a timely manner if you are unable to catch
me on the course.
My goal is to provide 3 to 4 posts per month on current projects,
maybe more depending on the activities. I would like to invite
you to take a look around and see what we’re doing at AvilaTurf.
blogspot.com. As always if you have questions or comments
please feel free to email me at mslack@avilagolf.com. I hope you
had a great holiday and look forward to seeing you on the course.

We are kicking off a couple of programs including Nine & Dines
and the “Three Linkers.” The Nine & Dines will take place once
a month with golf at 3:00pm followed by dinner. This is a great
way to get out, meet new members and friends, and enjoy our
beautiful golf course and club. As for the Three Linkers, we are
trying to grow the game by involving our beginner lady golfers.
The Three Linkers will meet for lunch on Wednesdays at 1pm
on the Terrace, participate in a half-hour lesson, then play three
holes of golf with a Pro. After golf, cocktails and crackers will be
served. Lunch, Lesson and Libation ~ we hope you’ll join us!
The golf course has been well received and I can’t remember
the conditions ever being better. It is up to you, our members,
to keep it that way. Without your efforts in filling divots, raking
bunkers, fixing ball marks, watching where you drive your cart,
and many other contributing factors, the golf course would be
impossible to maintain. We certainly appreciate in advance your
efforts to leave the golf course better than you found it, and we
encourage you to be sure your guests are led by example.
I can’t think of many clubs that have Pro V1 range balls, but we
proudly do. Your help is needed in order to continue offering
high quality range balls. Some have been found on the course
and there have been other issues. I can’t emphasize enough
the importance of these balls staying at the practice facility.
Your cooperation is appreciated.
Congratulations on a fantastic job by everyone
at Avila for the incredible improvements to the
golf course. From tee markers to flag sticks,
the results are exceptional—and likely to get
even better as everything matures. One of
the more exciting changes for me has been
the speed of the greens, which are much
quicker now. Working to our advantage, putts
are rolling truer meaning anything inside of ten feet tends to
stay on line provided reads are accurate. On the other hand,
come-back putts of five or more feet are not uncommon should
you miss!
After facing several long second putts, trepidation can enter
the mind thus affecting one’s confidence. So what’s the cure?
Number one, keep putting with an attitude of expecting to
make every opportunity. Second, spend more time learning to
control your speed on the practice greens. My favorite touch
drill is playing “catch”. The object is to get the ball to die right
around the feet of a partner. There is no reading of the break;
you simply take a look and go. Whoever finishes closest to the
opponent earns a point and gets to choose the next distance.
In this scenario, missed putts are never an issue because there
is no hole. Therefore, good athletes will naturally find their feel
in a very short period of time. And when it comes to excelling
on any green, playing with your eyes while trusting your hands
is always the best way to compete.
