Pretoria is the administrative capital of the country. The University of Pretoria is situated within this province. There are numerous points of interest within this province, such as the Cradle of Humankind, Rietvlei Nature Reserve, the Voortrekker Monument and the Union Buildings etc. 1 2. Western Cape The Western Cape lies on the southern tip of Africa. It is 1 149.7 kms from Pretoria. Cape Town also known as the mother city, is the legislative capital and seat of Parliament, with famous landmarks such as Table Mountain and the Cape of Good Hope. The Western Cape is home to Robben Island the island on which South Africa’s former president Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela spent the bulk of his 27 years in prison. 3. Eastern Cape The Eastern Cape, lying on the south eastern South African coast, is a region of great natural beauty, particularly the rugged cliffs, rough seas and dense green bush of the stretch known as the Wild Coast. The Eastern Cape is 904.9 kms from Pretoria. 4. Northern Cape The Northern Cape is home to the world’s largest telescope, the Square Kilometer Array (SKA). The Northern Cape is 857.5 kms from Pretoria. The landscape is characterised by vast arid plains with outcroppings of haphazard rock piles. 5. Free State The Free State lies in the heart of South Africa, with the Kingdom of Lesotho nestling in the hollow. The Free State is 372.3 kms from Pretoria. Lying between the Vaal River in the north and the Orange River in the south, the region is one of the flat, rolling grasslands and crop fields, rising to lovely sandstone mountains in the northeast. 6. Kwazulu-Natal Its western part is marked by the dramatic Drakensberg mountain range, with several peaks well over 3000 meters. KwaZulu-Natal is 524.7 kms from Pretoria. Some of South Africa’s best-protected indigenous coastal forests are found along the subtropical coastline of Kwa-Zulu Natal. 7. North West The North West lies in the north of South Africa on the Botswana border, fringed by the Kalahari desert in the west. The North West Province is 310.2 kms from Pretoria. It has a number of major tourist attractions, including the internationally famous Sun City, the Pilanesberg National Park and the Madikwe Game Reserve. 8. Mpumalanga Mpumalanga – “the place where the sun rises” – is a province with spectacular scenic beauty and an abundance of wildlife, lying in the northeast of South Africa. Mpumalanga is 272.1 kms from Pretoria. 2 9. Limpopo Limpopo is South Africa’s northern most province, lying within the great curve of the Limpopo River. Limpopo is 341.6 kms from Pretoria. Don't put your purse or wallet in the back pocket of your trousers. Also make sure that if you have a handbag or camera bag, to keep it close to you at all times, while walking in the streets or waiting at a bus stop or train station. 2. Don't withdraw money early in the morning or late at night from the ATM (Asynchronous Transfer Mode). Don’t accept help from people offering to 'help' you to withdraw money from the ATM. It is a good idea not to have a lot of money on your person at once. When driving around, place you handbag, cell phone and any other valuables under the car seat! 3. Don’t walk on the streets alone at night. If you want to do some site seeing make sure there are other people around. It should come as no surprise that wandering alone in a dark alley is likely to result in a bad event… no matter where you are in the world. 4. Make use of a shuttle service to take you to where you need to be or make use of the Gautrain or Gautrain busses to get around Pretoria. 5. Whether you’re planning on visiting a township or going on a safari drive, make sure you are accompanied by a registered tour guide. Townships are a wonderful and enlightening experience, but can be a little confronting for tourists to visit. 6. Always be aware of your surroundings. When walking in the streets, avoid displaying valuable objects that could easily be stolen. These include objects such as jewellery, electronic equipment, mobile phones, car keys and wallets/purses. 7. Walk with a purpose and plan routes beforehand. Looking lost or asking for directions makes you vulnerable to being an easy target for a criminal. Ask police officers, and shop or hotel staff for directions. If confronted by a criminal, comply with the criminal’s demands to hand over valuables. Source: SouthAfrica.info.2015.Safety tips for travellers in South Africa. There is no daylight saving in South Africa. Once at the airport and how to get to your hotel OR Tambo International Airport (Johannesburg – airport code JNB) is the major airport in Gauteng and is situated in Kempton Park in Johannesburg. In order to get to Pretoria one can either hire a shuttle service to drive you to your hotel or you can make arrangements with the hotel itself, where you will be staying to pick you up upon arrival and to take you back to the airport on departure. You can also opt to make use of the Gautrain, which you can catch directly from OR Tambo International Airport to the Hatfield Station, which is in walking distance from the University of Pretoria. The Gautrain also offers a Gautrain bus service, so you can then catch a bus once at the Hatfield station to different areas of Pretoria. Source: RoomsforAfrica.com.2015.Travel Tips. Banks and Money The currency unit in South Africa is the Rand, denoted by the symbol R before the numbers. There are 100 cents (100c) in R1 (one Rand). Foreign currency may be exchanged at local banks and Bureaux de Changes. Most major international credit cards such as American Express, Diners Club, MasterCard, Visa and their affiliates are accepted at most places in South Africa. Leaving a tip Most restaurants do not add a service charge to bills - thus it is customary to leave a 10-15% tip. 8 Tax Value-added-tax (VAT) is charged on most items. Foreign tourists visiting South Africa may have their 14% VAT refunded, provided that the value of goods purchased exceeds R250.00. VAT is refunded at the point of departure provided receipts are produced. However VAT on accommodation and services cannot be refunded. Disabled Travellers Generally speaking, our facilities for the disabled are improving. An increasing number of accommodation establishments have wheelchair ramps and bathroom facilities for the disabled. Almost every national park has at least one wheelchairfriendly chalet and many other accommodation establishments have one or two wheelchair-friendly rooms. Most of our sports stadiums have accessible suites, stands or areas for wheelchairs near accessible parking as well as special toilet facilities. Most public buildings are also wheelchair friendly. Clothing Some advice on what to wear on your visit to South Africa: During the summer time make sure to bring clothes that are cool, light and comfortable, because summer temperatures can get well into the 30 degree Celsius range in some areas. (86 degrees Fahrenheit and above). Also make sure to bring an umbrella or raincoat during summer as this is when most of the country gets its rainfall. In areas like Gauteng, thundershowers are common. So it is a good idea to bring a light jacket with you. Also make sure to pack in a swimming costume (bathing suit) as most hotels and guest houses in Pretoria have a swimming pool. If you plan to go on safari drives, a couple of neutral-toned clothing items will be useful, but there's no need to go overboard. A good pair of walking shoes is also advisable. For the evening, if you are dining at an upmarket restaurant or seeing a show, smart-casual attire is recommended. Source: RoomsforAfrica.com.2015.Travel Tips. South African tourist signs are coloured white on brown and are mostly trapezoidal in shape. They indicate the location of attractions, facilities, services and activities of interest to tourists. This includes accommodation, where B&B, for example, indicates a bed and breakfast establishment; a caravan denotes a caravan park; a tent signifies a campsite; a house symbolises a guest house; and a bed indicates a hotel, motel or inn. Electrical Sockets Electrical sockets (outlets) in South Africa are the "Type M" South African SABS1661 ("Large" 15 amp BS-546) sockets. This is actually an old British standard. The "Type M" South African plug and socket is not to be confused with the "Type D " Indian plug and socket. In pictures, they look very similar, but the South African type is much larger than the Indian type, and they are physically incompatible. If your appliance's plug doesn't match the shape of these sockets, you will need a travel plug adapter in order to plug in. Travel plug adapters simply change the shape of your appliance's plug to match whatever type of socket you need to plug into. Adapter for "Type M" South African SABS1661 / 15 amp "Large" British BS-546 10 Voltage in the hotels is 220-230 V. If you plan on bringing electrical devices with you, it is suggested that you bring an electrical converter with adaptor plug set, as some guest houses and hotles may not have this equipment. The socket configurations do indeed vary between two and three pronged varieties, so please bring the entire set of adaptors with you.
